Coherent elastic scattering of low energy photons by neutrons

The Compton process with the initial states of photons and neutrons described by the density matrices of a general form is studied for low energies of photons. The coherent contribution to the inclusive probability to record a photon is investigated in detail. This contribution gives the hologram of the neutron one-particle density matrix. The evolution of the Stokes parameters of scattered photons is described. The susceptibility tensor of a neutron gas and a wave packet of a single neutron is obtained. The explicit expression for the photon polarization operator in the presence of free neutrons is derived. It turns out that this polarization operator possesses pole singularities in the short wavelength approximation. These singularities corresponding to the additional degrees of freedom are identified with plasmons and the respective plasmon-polaritons are described. There are eight independent plasmon-polariton modes in a neutron gas and on a single neutron wave packet. Some plasmon-polariton modes prove to be tachyonic and unstable manifesting a spontaneous generation of the magnetic field. The estimates of the parameters of the neutron gas when it becomes ferromagnetic are found. In the infrared limit, the neutron wave packet behaves in coherent Compton scattering as a point particle with dynamical magnetic moment, the additional degrees of freedom being reduced to the dynamical part of the magnetic moment.

High-energy photon hologram of a photon gas

The photon hologram of a one-particle density matrix of a photon gas is derived including the case where the energy of a probe photon is above the electron-positron pair creation threshold. The explicit expressions for the holograms of a photon gas with one-particle density matrix in the form of a single Gaussian and of coherent and incoherent lattices of Gaussians are obtained. The conditions for resonant cones of coherent scattering by coherent and incoherent lattices are found. These conditions turn out to be different. The explicit expression for the dielectric susceptibility tensor of a photon gas and of a single photon prepared in arbitrary quantum states are derived on the probe photon mass-shell. It is established that a photon gas and a single photon behave in coherent photon scattering as a medium with linear and circular birefringence. This medium is transparent below the electron-positron creation threshold and is absorbing otherwise. In the high-energy limit, $\sqrt{s}\gg 2m$, it has the dielectric susceptibility tensor of a birefringent plasma except for a slow logarithmic scaling. It is shown that, for the probe photon energies of order $1$ GeV and higher, the energies of target photons of order $1$ eV and higher, and the photon gas density such that the classical intensity parameter is of order unity, the hologram of the photon gas can be measured with existing experimental facilities.

Plasmon-polaritons on a single electron

The explicit expression for the photon polarization operator in the presence of a single electron is found in the $in$-$in$ formalism in the one-loop approximation out of the photon mass-shell. This polarization operator describes the dielectric permittivity of a single electron wave packet in coherent scattering processes. The plasmons and plasmon-polaritons supported by a single electron wave packet are described. The two limiting cases are considered: the wavelength of the external electromagnetic field is much smaller than the typical scale of variations of the electron wave packet and the wavelength of the external electromagnetic field is much larger than the size of the electron wave packet. In the former case, there are eight independent plasmon-polariton modes. In the latter case, the plasmons boil down to the dynamical dipole moment attached to a point electron. Thus, in the infrared limit, the electron possesses a dynamical electric dipole moment manifesting itself in coherent scattering processes.

Excitation of multipolar transitions in nuclei by twisted photons

The explicit expression for the probability of absorption of a twisted photon by an atomic nucleus has been obtained. It is shown that photoabsorption obeys the selection rule $j\geqslant|m_γ|$, where $j$ is the multipolarity of the nuclear transition, when the nuclei lie near the axis along which a twisted photon with a projection of the total angular momentum $m_γ$ propagates. In the long-wave limit, the main contribution to the probability of absorption of a twisted photon comes from the multipole transition with $j=|m_γ|$. The absorption coefficient for twisted photons in a target consisting of many nuclei has been found.

Inclusive probability to record an electron in elastic electromagnetic scattering by a spin one-half hadron wave packet

The inclusive probability to record an electron in elastic electromagnetic scattering of an electron by a spin one-half hadron is obtained, the initial quantum states of the electron and the hadron being described by the density matrices of a general form. Contrary to the Rosenbluth formula for the differential cross-section for this process, the first nontrivial contribution to the inclusive probability turns out to be of order $α$ and not $α^2$. This contribution describes the interference between the trivial contribution to the $S$-matrix and the leading contribution to its connected part. The explicit expression for this interference terms is derived. For example, for Gaussian wave packets the interference contribution to the inclusive probability is of relative order $2\times 10^{-2}$ in comparison with the contribution of the free passed particle for the nonrelativistic proton and the $10$ MeV electron with the normal deviation of momenta in the electron and hadron wave packets of order $10$ keV. It is shown that the same interference term arises when the electron is scattered by the classical electromagnetic field produced by the hadron electromagnetic current averaged with respect to the free evolving density matrix of the hadron, even in the case of a single hadron. The interference term describes coherent scattering of the electron by the hadron wave packet and is immune to the quantum recoil experienced by a hadron due to scattering. The effective electron mass operator is found on the mass-shell.

Self-interaction of an arbitrary moving dislocation

The action functional for a linear elastic medium with dislocations is given. The equations of motion following from this action reproduce the Peach-Köhler and Lorentzian forces experienced by dislocations. The explicit expressions for singular and finite parts of the self-force acting on a curved dislocation are derived in the framework of linear theory of elasticity of an isotropic medium. The velocity of dislocation is assumed to be arbitrary but less than the shear wave velocity. The slow speed and near-sonic motions of a dislocation are investigated. In the near-sonic limit, the explicit expression for the leading contribution to the self-force is obtained. In the case of slowly moving dislocations, the effective equations of motion derived in the present paper reproduce the known results.

Letter of Interest for a Neutrino Beam from Protvino to KM3NeT/ORCA

The Protvino accelerator facility located in the Moscow region, Russia, is in a good position to offer a rich experimental research program in the field of neutrino physics. Of particular interest is the possibility to direct a neutrino beam from Protvino towards the KM3NeT/ORCA detector, which is currently under construction in the Mediterranean Sea 40 km offshore Toulon, France. This proposal is known as P2O. Thanks to its baseline of 2595 km, this experiment would yield an unparalleled sensitivity to matter effects in the Earth, allowing for the determination of the neutrino mass ordering with a high level of certainty after only a few years of running at a modest beam intensity of $\approx$ 90 kW. With a prolonged exposure ($\approx$ 1500 kW*yr), a 2$σ$ sensitivity to the leptonic CP-violating Dirac phase can be achieved. A second stage of the experiment, comprising a further intensity upgrade of the accelerator complex and a densified version of the ORCA detector (Super-ORCA), would allow for up to a 6$σ$ sensitivity to CP violation and a 10$^\circ$-17$^\circ$ resolution on the CP phase after 10 years of running with a 450 kW beam, competitive with other planned experiments. The initial composition and energy spectrum of the neutrino beam would need to be monitored by a near detector, to be constructed several hundred meters downstream from the proton beam target. The same neutrino beam and near detector set-up would also allow for neutrino-nucleus cross section measurements to be performed. A short-baseline sterile neutrino search experiment would also be possible.

On a possibility to extract a signal from heavy gluino cascade decays via isolated muon detection at the LHC energies

800 GeV gluino pair production is simulated using ISASUSY 1.1 MC-program. The cascade decay of the gluino into two lightest neutralinos, $\widetilde{g} \rightarrow \widetildeχ_2^0 X$, $\widetildeχ_2^0 \rightarrow μ^+ μ^- \widetildeχ_1^0$, is studied for a convenient set of SUSY parameters: $μ$ = 200 GeV, tan$β$ = 2, average squark masses of 1600 GeV, charged Higgs mass of 500 GeV, and top quark mass of 140 GeV. With such parameters the mass difference between $\widetildeχ_2^0$ and $\widetildeχ_1^0$ is less than the mass of Z. As a background, $t\bar{t}$, Z + jets, WW, WZ and ZZ events were generated using ISAJET 6.50 MC-program. The granularities and energy resolutions of the calorimeters in the pseudorapidity range of $\midη\mid$ < 5 are taken into account. If missing transverse momentum is greater than 200 GeV, the number of jets in the calorimeters is 4 or more, the invariant mass of two isolated muons is less than 80 GeV, the background in the muon transverse momentum distribution is negligible.
