Frustration of square cupola in Sr(TiO)Cu$_{4}$(PO$_{4}$)$_{4}$

The structural and magnetic properties of the square-cupola antiferromagnet Sr(TiO)Cu$_{4}$(PO$_{4}$)$_{4}$ are investigated via x-ray diffraction, magnetization, heat capacity, and $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance experiments on polycrystalline samples, as well as density-functional band-structure calculations. The temperature-dependent unit cell volume could be described well using the Debye approximation with the Debye temperature of $θ_{\rm D} \simeq $ 550~K. Magnetic response reveals a pronounced two-dimensionality with a magnetic long-range-order below $T_{\rm N} \simeq 6.2$~K. High-field magnetization exhibits a kink at $1/3$ of the saturation magnetization. Asymmetric $^{31}$P NMR spectra clearly suggest strong in-plane anisotropy in the magnetic susceptibility, as anticipated from the crystal structure. From the $^{31}$P NMR shift vs bulk susceptibility plot, the isotropic and axial parts of the hyperfine coupling between $^{31}$P nuclei and the Cu$^{2+}$ spins are calculated to be $A_{\rm hf}^{\rm iso} \simeq 6539$ and $A_{\rm hf}^{\rm ax} \simeq 952$~Oe/$μ_{\rm B}$, respectively. The low-temperature and low-field $^{31}$P NMR spectra indicate a commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering. Frustrated nature of the compound is inferred from the temperature-dependent $^{31}$P NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate and confirmed by our microscopic analysis that reveals strong frustration of the square cupola by next-nearest-neighbor exchange couplings.

Antiferromagnetic ground state in the MnGa$_4$ intermetallic compound

Magnetism of the binary intermetallic compound MnGa$_4$ is re-investigated. Band-structure calculations predict antiferromagnetic behavior in contrast to Pauli paramagnetism reported previously. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on single crystals indeed reveal an antiferromagnetic transition at $T_N=393$ K. Neutron powder diffraction and $^{69,71}$Ga nuclear quadrupole resonance spectroscopy show collinear antiferromagnetic order with magnetic moments alligned along the [111] direction of the cubic unit cell. The magnetic moment of 0.80(3)$μ_B$ at 1.5 K extracted from the neutron data is in good agreement with the band-structure results.

Zigzag spin chains in the spin-5/2 antiferromagnet Ba$_2$Mn(PO$_4)_2$

Magnetic properties and magnetic structure of the Ba$_{2}$Mn(PO$_{4}$)$_{2}$ antiferromagnet featuring frustrated zigzag chains of $S=\frac{5}{2}$ Mn$^{2+}$ ions are reported based on neutron diffraction, density-functional band-structure calculations, as well as temperature- and field-dependent measurements of the magnetization and specific heat. A magnetic transition at $T_N\simeq 5$\,K marks the onset of the antiferromagnetic order with the propagation vector ${\mathbf k} = (\frac12\, 0\, \frac12)$ and ordered moment of $4.33\pm0.08~μ_B$/Mn$^{2+}$ at 1.5\,K, pointing along the $c$ direction. Direction of the magnetic moment is chosen by the single-ion anisotropy, which is relatively weak compared to the isostructural Ni$^{2+}$ compound. Geometrical frustration has strong impact on thermodynamic properties of Ba$_2$Mn(PO$_4)_2$, but manifestations of the frustration are different from those in Ba$_2$Ni(PO$_4)_2$, where frustration by isotropic exchange couplings is minor, yet strong and competing single-ion anisotropies are present. A spin-flop transition is observed around 2.5\,T. The evaluation of the magnetic structure from the ground state via the spin-flop state to the field-polarized ferromagnetic state has been revealed by a comprehensive neutron diffraction study as a function of magnetic field below $T_N$. Finally, a magnetic phase diagram in the $H-T$ plane is obtained.

Competition between spin-orbit coupling, magnetism, and dimerization in the honeycomb iridates: $α$-Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ under pressure

Single-crystal x-ray diffraction studies with synchrotron radiation on the honeycomb iridate $α$-Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ reveal a pressure-induced structural phase transition with symmetry lowering from monoclinic to triclinic at a critical pressure of $P_{c}$ = 3.8 GPa. According to the evolution of the lattice parameters with pressure, the transition mainly affects the $ab$ plane and thereby the Ir hexagon network, leading to the formation of Ir--Ir dimers. These observations are independently predicted and corroborated by our \textit{ab initio} density functional theory calculations where we find that the appearance of Ir--Ir dimers at finite pressure is a consequence of a subtle interplay between magnetism, correlation, spin-orbit coupling, and covalent bonding. Our results further suggest that at $P_{c}$ the system undergoes a magnetic collapse. Finally we provide a general picture of competing interactions for the honeycomb lattices $A_{2}$$M$O$_{3}$ with $A$= Li, Na and $M$ = Ir, Ru.

Pressure-induced ferromagnetism due to an anisotropic electronic topological transition in Fe1.08Te

A rapid and anisotropic modification of the Fermi-surface shape can be associated with abrupt changes in crystalline lattice geometry or in the magnetic state of a material. In this study we show that such an electronic topological transition is at the basis of the formation of an unusual pressure-induced tetragonal ferromagnetic phase in Fe$_{1.08}$Te. Around 2 GPa, the orthorhombic and incommensurate antiferromagnetic ground-state of Fe$_{1.08}$Te is transformed upon increasing pressure into a tetragonal ferromagnetic state via a conventional first-order transition. On the other hand, an isostructural transition takes place from the paramagnetic high-temperature state into the ferromagnetic phase as a rare case of a `type 0' transformation with anisotropic properties. Electronic-structure calculations in combination with electrical resistivity, magnetization, and x-ray diffraction experiments show that the electronic system of Fe$_{1.08}$Te is instable with respect to profound topological transitions that can drive fundamental changes of the lattice anisotropy and the associated magnetic order.

Persistent low-temperature spin dynamics in the mixed-valence iridate Ba$_{3}$InIr$_{2}$O$_{9}$

Using thermodynamic measurements, neutron diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, and muon spin relaxation, we establish putative quantum spin-liquid behavior in Ba$_3$InIr$_2$O$_9$, where unpaired electrons are localized on mixed-valence Ir$_2$O$_9$ dimers with Ir$^{4.5+}$ ions. Despite the antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature on the order of 10 K, neither long-range magnetic order nor spin freezing are observed down to at least 20 mK, such that spins are short-range correlated and dynamic over nearly three decades in temperature. Quadratic power-law behavior of both the spin-lattice relaxation rate and specific heat indicates the gapless nature of the ground state. We envisage that this exotic behavior may be related to an unprecedented combination of the triangular and buckled honeycomb geometries of nearest-neighbor exchange couplings in the mixed-valence setting.

High-pressure versus isoelectronic doping effect on the honeycomb iridate Na$_2$IrO$_3$

We study the effect of isoelectronic doping and external pressure in tuning the ground state of the honeycomb iridate Na$_2$IrO$_3$ by combining optical spectroscopy with synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements on single crystals. The obtained optical conductivity of Na$_2$IrO$_3$ is discussed in terms of a Mott insulating picture versus the formation of quasimolecular orbitals and in terms of Kitaev-interactions. With increasing Li content $x$, (Na$_{1-x}$Li$_x$)$_2$IrO$_3$ moves deeper into the Mott insulating regime and there are indications that up to a doping level of 24\% the compound comes closer to the Kitaev-limit. The optical conductivity spectrum of single crystalline $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ does not follow the trends observed for the series up to $x=0.24$. There are strong indications that $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ is less close to the Kitaev-limit compared to Na$_2$IrO$_3$ and closer to the quasimolecular orbital picture. Except for the pressure-induced hardening of the phonon modes, the optical properties of Na$_2$IrO$_3$ seem to be robust against external pressure. Possible explanations of the unexpected evolution of the optical conductivity with isolectronic doping and the drastic change between $x=0.24$ and $x=1$ are given by comparing the pressure-induced changes of lattice parameters and the optical conductivity with the corresponding changes induced by doping.

Magnetic anisotropy in the frustrated spin chain compound $β$-TeVO$_4$

Isotropic and anisotropic magnetic behavior of the frustrated spin chain compound $β$-TeVO$_4$ is reported. Three magnetic transitions observed in zero magnetic field are tracked in fields applied along different crystallographic directions using magnetization, heat capacity, and magnetostriction measurements. Qualitatively different temperature-field diagrams are obtained below 10 T for the field applied along $a$ or $b$ and along $c$, respectively. In contrast, a nearly isotropic high-field phase emerges above 18 T and persists up to the saturation that occurs around 22.5 T. Upon cooling in low fields, the transitions at $T_{\rm N1}$ and $T_{\rm N2}$ toward the spin-density-wave and stripe phases are of the second order, whereas the transition at $T_{\rm N3}$ toward the helical state is of the first order and entails a lattice component. Our microscopic analysis identifies frustrated $J_1-J_2$ spin chains with a sizable antiferromagnetic interchain coupling in the $bc$ plane and ferromagnetic couplings along the $a$ direction. The competition between these ferromagnetic interchain couplings and the helical order within the chain underlies the incommensurate order along the $a$-direction, as observed experimentally. Although a helical state is triggered by the competition between $J_1$ and $J_2$ within the chain, the plane of the helix is not uniquely defined because of competing magnetic anisotropies. Using high-resolution synchrotron diffraction and $^{125}$Te nuclear magnetic resonance, we also demonstrate that the crystal structure of $β$-TeVO$_4$ does not change down to 10 K, and the orbital state of V$^{4+}$ is preserved.

Commensurate and incommensurate magnetic order in spin-1 chains stacked on the triangular lattice in Li$_2$NiW$_2$O$_8$

We report thermodynamic properties, magnetic ground state, and microscopic magnetic model of the spin-1 frustrated antiferromaget Li$_{2}$NiW$_{2}$O$_{8}$ showing successive transitions at $T_{\rm N1}\simeq 18$ K and $T_{\rm N2}\simeq 12.5$ K in zero field. Nuclear magnetic resonance and neutron diffraction reveal collinear and commensurate magnetic order with the propagation vector $\mathbf k=(\frac12,0,\frac12)$ below $T_{\rm N2}$. The ordered moment of 1.8 $μ_B$ at 1.5 K is directed along $[0.89(9),-0.10(5),-0.49(6)]$ and matches the magnetic easy axis of spin-1 Ni$^{2+}$ ions, which is determined by the scissor-like distortion of the NiO$_6$ octahedra. Incommensurate magnetic order, presumably of spin-density-wave type, is observed in the region between $T_{\rm N2}$ and $T_{\rm N1}$. Density-functional band-structure calculations put forward a three-dimensional spin lattice with spin-1 chains running along the $[01\bar 1]$ direction and stacked on a spatially anisotropic triangular lattice in the $ab$ plane. We show that the collinear magnetic order in Li$_2$NiW$_2$O$_8$ is incompatible with the triangular lattice geometry and thus driven by a pronounced easy-axis single-ion anisotropy of Ni$^{2+}$.

Hybridization and spin-orbit coupling effects in quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 magnet Ba3Cu3Sc4O12

We study electronic and magnetic properties of the quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 magnet Ba3Cu3Sc4O12 with a distinct orthogonal connectivity of CuO4 plaquettes. An effective low-energy model taking into account spin-orbit coupling was constructed by means of first-principles calculations. On this basis a complete microscopic magnetic model of Ba3Cu3Sc4O12, including symmetric and antisymmetric anisotropic exchange interactions, is derived. The anisotropic exchanges are obtained from a distinct first-principles numerical scheme combining, on one hand, the local density approximation taking into account spin-orbit coupling, and, on the other hand, projection procedure along with the microscopic theory by Toru Moriya. The resulting tensors of the symmetric anisotropy favor collinear magnetic order along the structural chains with the leading ferromagnetic coupling J1 = -9.88 meV. The interchain interactions J8 = 0.21 meV and J5 = 0.093 meV are antiferromagnetic. Quantum Monte Carlo simulations demonstrated that the proposed model reproduces the experimental Neel temperature, magnetization and magnetic susceptibility data. The modeling of neutron diffraction data reveals an important role of the covalent Cu-O bonding in Ba3Cu3Sc4O12.

First-principles study of the magnetic ground state in kagome francisites Cu3Bi(SeO3)2O2X (X=Cl, Br)

We explore magnetic behavior of kagome francisites Cu3Bi(SeO3)2O2X (X = Cl and Br) using first-principles calculations. To this end, we propose an approach based on the Hubbard model in the Wannier functions basis constructed on the level of local-density approximation (LDA). The ground-state spin configuration is determined by a Hartree-Fock solution of the Hubbard model both in zero magnetic field and in applied magnetic fields. Additionally, parameters of an effective spin Hamiltonian are obtained by taking into account the hybridization effects and spin-orbit coupling. We show that only the former approach, the Hartree-Fock solution of the Hubbard model, allows for a complete description of the anisotropic magnetization process. While our calculations confirm that the canted zero-field ground state arises from a competition between ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor couplings in the kagome planes, weaker anisotropic terms are crucial for fixing spin directions and for the overall magnetization process. We thus show that the Hartree-Fock solution of an electronic Hamiltonian is a viable alternative to the analysis of effective spin Hamiltonians when a magnetic ground state and effects of external field are considered.

Collinear order in a frustrated three-dimensional spin-$\frac12$ antiferromagnet Li$_2$CuW$_2$O$_8$

Magnetic frustration in three dimensions (3D) manifests itself in the spin-$\frac12$ insulator Li$_2$CuW$_2$O$_8$. Density-functional band-structure calculations reveal a peculiar spin lattice built of triangular planes with frustrated interplane couplings. The saturation field of 29 T contrasts with the susceptibility maximum at 8.5 K and a relatively low Néel temperature $T_N\simeq 3.9$ K. Magnetic order below $T_N$ is collinear with the propagation vector $(0,\frac12,0)$ and an ordered moment of 0.65(4) $μ_B$ according to neutron diffraction data. This reduced ordered moment together with the low maximum of the magnetic specific heat ($C^{\max}/R\simeq 0.35$) pinpoint strong magnetic frustration in 3D. Collinear magnetic order suggests that quantum fluctuations play crucial role in this system, where a non-collinear spiral state would be stabilized classically.

Alternating-spin-chain compound AgVOAsO$_4$ probed by $^{75}$As NMR

$^{75}$As NMR measurements were performed on a polycrystalline sample of spin-1/2 alternating-spin-chain Heisenberg antiferromagnet AgVOAsO$_4$. Temperature-dependent NMR shift $K(T)$, which is a direct measure of the intrinsic spin susceptibility, agrees very well with the spin-1/2 alternating-chain model, justifying the assignment of the spin lattice. From the analysis of $K(T)$, magnetic exchange parameters were estimated as follows: the leading exchange $J/k_{\rm B} \simeq 38.4$ K, alternation ratio $α= J'/J \simeq 0.68$, and spin gap $Δ/k_{\rm B} \simeq 15$ K. The transferred hyperfine coupling between the $^{75}$As nucleus and V$^{4+}$ spins obtained by comparing the NMR shift with bulk susceptibility amounts to $A_{\rm hf} \simeq 3.3$ T/$μ_{\rm B}$. Our temperature-dependent spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1(T)$ also shows an activated behaviour at low temperatures, thus confirming the presence of a spin gap in AgVOAsO$_4$.

Frustrated three-dimensional antiferromagnet Li$_{2}$CuW$_{2}$O$_{8}$: $^7$Li NMR and the effect of non-magnetic dilution

We report a $^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study of a frustrated three-dimensional \mbox{spin-$\frac12$} antiferromagnet Li$_{2}$CuW$_{2}$O$_{8}$ and also explore the effect of non-magnetic dilution. The magnetic long-range ordering in the parent compound at $T_{\rm N}\simeq$ 3.9~K was detected from the drastic line broadening and a peak in the spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$). The NMR spectrum above $T_{\rm N}$ broadens systematically, and its full width at half maximum (FWHM) tracks the static spin susceptibility. From the analysis of FWHM vs. static susceptibility, the coupling between the Li nuclei and Cu$^{2+}$ ions was found to be purely dipolar in nature. The magnitude of the maximum exchange coupling constant is $J_{\rm max}/k_{\rm B}\simeq 13$\,K. NMR spectra below $T_{\rm N}$ broaden abruptly and transform into a double-horn pattern reflecting the commensurate nature of the spin structure in the ordered state. Below $T_{\rm N}$, 1/$T_1$ follows a $T^5$ behavior. The frustrated nature of the compound is confirmed by persistent magnetic correlations at high temperatures well above $T_{\rm N}$. The dilution of the spin lattice with non-magnetic Zn atoms has dramatic influence on $T_N$ that decreases exponentially similar to quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnets, even though Li$_2$CuW$_2$O$_8$ has only a weak one-dimensional anisotropy. Heat capacity of doped samples follows power law ($C_{\rm p} \propto T^α$) below $T_{\rm N}$, and the exponent ($α$) decreases from 3 in the parent compound to 1 in the 25\% doped sample.

Multiple magnetic transitions in the spin-$\frac12$ chain antiferromagnet SrCuTe2O6

Using thermodynamic measurements and density-functional band-structure calculations, we explore magnetic behavior of SrCuTe2O6. Despite being a structural sibling of a three-dimensional frustrated system PbCuTe2O6, this spin-1/2 quantum magnet shows remarkably different low-temperature behavior. Above 7 K, magnetic susceptibility of SrCuTe2O6 follows the spin-chain model with the antiferromagnetic intrachain coupling of J = 49.3 K. We ascribe this quasi-one-dimensional behavior to the leading third-neighbor coupling that involves a weakly bent Cu--O......O--Cu superexchange pathway with a short O.....O contact of 2.79 Å. Below 5 K, SrCuTe2O6 undergoes two consecutive magnetic transitions that may be triggered by the frustrated nature of interchain couplings. Field dependence of the magnetic transitions (phase diagram) is reported.

Antiferromagnetism of Zn$_2$VO(PO$_4)_2$ and the dilution with Ti$^{4+}$

We report static and dynamic properties of the antiferromagnetic compound Zn$_{2}$(VO)(PO$_{4}$)$_{2}$, and the consequences of non-magnetic Ti$^{4+}$ doping at the V$^{4+}$ site. $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) consistently show the formation of the long-range antiferromagnetic order below $T_N= 3.8-3.9$\,K. The critical exponent $β=0.33 \pm 0.02$ estimated from the temperature dependence of the sublattice magnetization measured by $^{31}$P NMR at 9.4\,MHz is consistent with universality classes of three-dimensional spin models. The isotropic and axial hyperfine couplings between the $^{31}$P nuclei and V$^{4+}$ spins are $A_{\rm hf}^{\rm iso} = (9221 \pm 100)$ Oe/$μ_{\rm B}$ and $A_{\rm hf}^{\rm ax} = (1010 \pm 50)$ Oe/$μ_{\rm B}$, respectively. Magnetic susceptibility data above 6.5\,K and heat capacity data above 4.5\,K are well described by quantum Monte-Carlo simulations for the Heisenberg model on the square lattice with $J\simeq 7.7$\,K. This value of $J$ is consistent with the values obtained from the NMR shift, $1/T_1$ and electron spin resonance (ESR) intensity analysis. Doping Zn$_2$VO(PO$_4)_2$ with non-magnetic Ti$^{4+}$ leads to a marginal increase in the $J$ value and the overall dilution of the spin lattice. In contrast to the recent \textit{ab initio} results, we find neither evidence for the monoclinic structural distortion nor signatures of the magnetic one-dimensionality for doped samples with up to 15\% of Ti$^{4+}$. The Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ decreases linearly with increasing the amount of the non-magnetic dopant.

Quasi-two-dimensional $S=1/2$ magnetism of Cu[C$_6$H$_2$(COO)$_4$][C$_2$H$_5$NH$_3$]$_2$

We report structural and magnetic properties of the spin-$\frac12$ quantum antiferromagnet Cu[C$_6$H$_2$(COO)$_4$][C$_2$H$_5$NH$_3$]$_2$ by means of single-crystal x-ray diffraction, magnetization, heat capacity, and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements on polycrystalline samples, as well as band-structure calculations. The triclinic crystal structure of this compound features CuO$_4$ plaquette units connected into a two-dimensional framework through anions of the pyromellitic acid [C$_6$H$_2$(COO)$_4$]$^{4-}$. The ethylamine cations [C$_2$H$_5$NH$_3]^+$ are located between the layers and act as spacers. Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements establish a quasi-two-dimensional, weakly anisotropic and non-frustrated spin-$\frac12$ square lattice with the ratio of the couplings $J_a/J_c\simeq 0.7$ along the $a$ and $c$ directions, respectively. No clear signatures of the long-range magnetic order are seen in thermodynamic measurements down to 1.8\,K. However, the gradual broadening of the ESR line suggests that magnetic ordering occurs at lower temperatures. Leading magnetic couplings are mediated by the organic anion of the pyromellitic acid and exhibit a non-trivial dependence on the Cu--Cu distance, with the stronger coupling between those Cu atoms that are further apart.

Anisotropic Ru3+ 4d5 magnetism in the alpha-RuCl3 honeycomb system: susceptibility, specific heat and Zero field NMR

Hexagonal alpha-Ru trichloride single crystals exhibit a strong magnetic anisotropy and we show that upon applying fields up to 14 T in the honeycomb plane the successive magnetic order at T1 = 14 K and T2 = 8 K could be completely suppressed whereas in the perpendicular direction the magnetic order is robust. Furthermore the field dependence of chi(T) implies coexisting ferro- and antiferromagnetic exchange between in-plane components of Ru^3+-spins, whereas for out-of-plane components a strong antiferromagnetic exchange becomes evident. 101^Ru zero-field nuclear magnetic resonance in the ordered state evidence a complex (probably non coplanar chiral) long-range magnetic structure. The large orbital moment on Ru^3+ is found in density-functional calculations.
