Competition Between Multiferroic and Magnetic Soliton Lattice States in DyFeO$_3$

Simultaneous breaking of time reversal and inversion symmetries in multiferroics couples ferroelectricity to magnetism and is a source of unusual physical phenomena that can be used in next-generation electronic devices. A notable example is DyFeO$_3$, which under applied magnetic fields exhibits a giant linear magnetoelectric response and a large spontaneous electric polarization induced by coexisting orders of Fe and Dy spins. Here, we use high-resolution neutron diffraction to show that at zero field DyFeO$_3$ hosts an incommensurate magnetic soliton lattice formed by spatially ordered Dy domain walls with an average domain size of 231(8) Å. The long-ranged interaction between the domain walls is mediated by magnons propagating through the Fe subsystem and is analogous to the Yukawa force in particle physics. An applied magnetic field destroys the long-ranged incommensurate order, unlocks the linear magnetoelectric response and stabilizes the ferroelectric state. The magnetic domain walls are electrically charged and the soliton array dimerizes when both electric and magnetic fields are applied. Numerical simulations with experimental parameters suggest, that the generic competition between the ferroelectric and incommensurate states can be effectively controlled by an applied electric field.

Engineering Phase Competition Between Stripe Order and Superconductivity in La$_{1.88}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$

Unconventional superconductivity often couples to other electronic orders in a cooperative or competing fashion. Identifying external stimuli that tune between these two limits is of fundamental interest. Here, we show that strain perpendicular to the copper-oxide planes couples directly to the competing interaction between charge stripe order and superconductivity in La$_{1.88}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ (LSCO). Compressive $c$-axis pressure amplifies stripe order within the superconducting state, while having no impact on the normal state. By contrast, strain dramatically diminishes the magnetic field enhancement of stripe order in the superconducting state. These results suggest that $c$-axis strain acts as tuning parameter of the competing interaction between charge stripe order and superconductivity. This interpretation implies a uniaxial pressure-induced ground state in which the competition between charge order and superconductivity is reduced.

Field-Induced Spin Excitations in the Spin-1/2 Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnet CsYbSe$_2$

A layered triangular lattice with spin-1/2 ions is an ideal platform to explore highly entangled exotic states like quantum spin liquid (QSL). Here, we report a systematic in-field neutron scattering study on a perfect two-dimensional triangular-lattice antiferromagnet, CsYbSe$_2$, a member of the large QSL candidate family rare-earth chalcogenides. The elastic neutron scattering measured down to 70 mK shows that there is a short-range 120$^{\circ}$ magnetic order at zero field. In the field-induced ordered states, the spin-spin correlation lengths along the $c$ axis are relatively short, although the heat capacity results indicate long-range magnetic orders at 3 T $-$ 5 T. The inelastic neutron scattering spectra evolve from highly damped continuum-like excitations at zero field to relatively sharp spin wave modes at the plateau phase. Our extensive large-cluster density-matrix renormalization group calculations with a Heisenberg triangular-lattice nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic model reproduce the essential features of the experimental spectra, including continuum-like excitations at zero field, series of sharp magnons at the plateau phase as well as two-magnon excitations at high energy. This work presents comprehensive experimental and theoretical overview of the unconventional field-induced spin dynamics in triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet and thus provides valuable insight into quantum many-body phenomena.

Tunable critical correlations in kagome ice

We present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of the kagome ice Coulomb phase, that explores the fine tuning of critical correlations by applied field, temperature and crystal orientation. The continuous modification of algebraic correlations is observed by polarised neutron scattering experiments and is found to be well described by numerical simulations of an idealised model. We further clarify the thermodynamics of field tuned Kasteleyn transitions and demonstrate some dramatic finite size scaling properties that depend on how topological string defects wind around the system boundaries. We conclude that kagome ice is a remarkable example of a critical and topological state in a real system that may be subject to fine experimental control.
