Phase stiffness in flat-band superconductors with nodal pairing

We study Bogoliubov quasiparticle spectrum in a two-band system with momentum-dependent hybridization between a dispersive band and a flat band. The interplay between the interband mixing and intraband Cooper pairing may give rise to a parabolic node in the spectrum of flat band quasiparticles, resulting in a quadratic temperature dependence of the superconducting phase stiffness at low temperatures. We also comment that nonmagnetic disorder induces Machida-Shibata deep subgap resonances suggesting the sensitivity of flat-band superconductivity to disorder.

Superconductivity from incoherent Cooper pairs in the strong-coupling regime

We propose a scenario for superconductivity at strong electron-electron attractive interaction, in the case when the increase of the interaction strength promotes the nucleation of the local Cooper pairs and forms a state with a spatially phase incoherent Cooper pair order parameter. We show that this state can be characterized by a pseudogap which is determined by the electron scattering by phase fluctuations. At low temperatures, however, long-range correlations between the regions with different phases become important and establish global phase coherence and hence superconductivity in the system. We develop a mean-field theory to describe a phase transition between the preformed Cooper pair and superconducting states. This scenario of superconductivity applies not only to conductors with parabolic bands but also to the flat-band systems in which flat and dispersive bands coexist and are responsible for the formation of Cooper pairs as well as their phase synchronization.

Phase transition in quasi-flat band superconductors

We investigate superconductivity in a two-dimensional material described by a two-band heavy-fermion model, where hybridization between a dispersive band and a flat band introduces a quasi-flat dispersion to the otherwise localized flat-band electrons. The enhanced density of states in the quasi-flat band raises the crossover temperature for an inhomogeneous preformed Cooper pair state. The superconducting phase stiffness and the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) temperature are governed by the Fermi surface contribution induced by hybridization. We compute the crossover and BKT temperatures, revealing a dome-like dependence on doping. When the pairing amplitude exceeds the energy width of the quasi-flat band, superconductivity is suppressed, and the inhomogeneous pairing regime expands linearly with increasing interaction strength. However, in the opposite case, the BKT temperature reaches a maximum value that is only numerically less than the energy width of the quasi-flat band. We also discuss our results in the context of superconductivity in graphene-based systems.

Spin and valley waves in Dirac semimetals with population imbalance

We find an intervalley wave collective mode in two- and three-dimensional Dirac semimetals in the presence of a valley population imbalance. The dispersion relation of this mode is gapless, proportional to the square of the wave vector at small frequencies, and inversely proportional to the electron-electron exchange interaction energy. The valley wave serves as an energy gain source for the external field, that generates the intervalley transitions. The spin wave analog is discussed for the case of a semimetal with nonequilibrium spin orientation.

Photoinduced interfacial chiral modes in threefold topological semimetal

We investigate the chiral electronic modes at the interface between two regions of a threefold topological semimetal, which is illuminated by left and right handed elliptically polarized waves. The radiation effects on the band structure of semimetal is analyzed by using Floquet theory. Two distinct solutions of the interface modes are found with the chirality depending on the phase of the irradiation. We also consider the anomalous Hall response which is attributed to the transition between dispersionless flat band and conic bands.

RKKY interaction on the surface of three-dimensional Dirac semimetals

We study the RKKY interaction between two magnetic impurities located on the surface of a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal with two Dirac nodes in the band structure. By taking into account both bulk and surface contributions to the exchange interaction between the localized spins, we demonstrate that the surface contribution in general dominates the bulk one at distances larger than the inverse node separation due to a weaker power-law decay. We find a strong anisotropy of the surface term with respect to the spins being aligned along the node separation axis or perpendicular to it. In the many impurity dilute regime, this implies formation of quasi-one-dimensional magnetic stripes orthogonal to the node axis. We also discuss the effects of a surface spin-mixing term coupling electrons from spin-degenerate Fermi arcs.

Superconductivity in Type-II Weyl Semimetals

We study superconductivity in a Weyl semimetal with a tilted dispersion around two Weyl points of opposite chirality. In the absence of any tilt, the state with zero momentum pairing between two Fermi sheets enclosing each Weyl point has four point nodes in the superconducting gap function. Moreover, the surface of the superconductor hosts Fermi arc states and Majorana flat bands. We show that a quantum phase transition occurs at a critical value of the tilt, at which two gap nodes disappear by merging at the center of the first Brillouin zone, or by escaping at its edges, depending on the direction of the tilt. The region in the momentum space that the Majorana flat band occupies is found to increase as the tilt parameter is made larger. Additionally, the superconducting critical temperature and electronic specific heat can be enhanced in the vicinity of the quantum phase transition due to the singularity in the electronic density of states.

Flat Band in Disorder Driven Non-Hermitian Weyl Semimetals

We study the interplay of disorder and bandstructure topology in a Weyl semimetal with a tilted conical spectrum around the Weyl points. The spectrum of particles is given by the eigenvalues of a non-Hermitian matrix, which contains contributions from a Weyl Hamiltonian and complex self-energy due to electron elastic scattering on disorder. We find that the tilt-induced matrix structure of the self-energy gives rise to either a flat band or a nodal line segment at the interface of the electron and hole pockets in the bulk bandstructure of type-II Weyl semimetals depending on the Weyl cone inclination. For the tilt in a single direction in momentum space, each Weyl point expands into a flat band lying on the plane, which is transverse to the direction of the tilt. The spectrum of the flat band is fully imaginary and is separated from the in-plane dispersive part of the spectrum by the "exceptional nodal ring" where the matrix of the Green function in momentum-frequency space is defective. The tilt in two directions might shrink a flat band into a nodal line segment with "exceptional edge points". We discuss the connection to the non-Hermitian topological theory.

Anomalous Nernst and Thermal Hall Effects in Tilted Weyl Semimetals

We study the anomalous Nernst and thermal Hall effects in a linearized low-energy model of a tilted Weyl semimetal, with two Weyl nodes separated in momentum space. For inversion symmetric tilt, we give analytic expressions in two opposite limits: for a small tilt, corresponding to a type-I Weyl semimetal, the Nernst conductivity is finite and independent of the Fermi level, while for a large tilt, corresponding to a type-II Weyl semimetal, it acquires a contribution depending logarithmically on the Fermi energy. This result is in a sharp contrast to the nontilted case, where the Nernst response is known to be zero in the linear model. The thermal Hall conductivity similarly acquires Fermi surface contributions, which add to the Fermi level independent, zero tilt result, and is suppressed as one over the tilt parameter at half filling in the Type-II phase. In the case of inversion breaking tilt, with the tilting vector of equal modulus in the two Weyl cones, all Fermi surface contributions to both anomalous responses cancel out, resulting in zero Nernst conductivity. We discuss two possible experimental setups, representing open and closed thermoelectric circuits.

Nematic Skyrmions in Odd-Parity Superconductors

We study topological excitations in two-component nematic superconductors, with a particular focus on Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ as a candidate material. We find that the lowest-energy topological excitations are coreless vortices: a bound state of two spatially separated half-quantum vortices. These objects are nematic Skyrmions, since they are characterized by an additional topological charge. The inter-Skyrmion forces are dipolar in this model, i.e. attractive for certain relative orientations of the Skyrmions, hence forming multi-Skyrmion bound states.

Chiral Anomaly and Second Harmonic Generation in Weyl Semimetals

We study second harmonic generation in centrosymmetric Weyl semimetal with broken time reversal symmetry. We calculate electric current density at the double frequency of the propagating electromagnetic field in the presence of applied constant magnetic field, using the method of kinetic equation for electron distribution function. It is shown that the chiral anomaly contribution to second harmonic generation in the lowest order is linearly proportional to the applied magnetic field. The limit when the chiral anomaly dominates over the Lorentz-type contribution to second harmonic generation is discussed.

Anomalous Hall effect in Weyl superconductors

We present a theory of the anomalous Hall effect in a topological Weyl superconductor with broken time reversal symmetry. Specifically, we consider a ferromagnetic Weyl metal with two Weyl nodes of opposite chirality near the Fermi energy. In the presence of inversion symmetry, such a metal experiences a weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) instability, with pairing of parity-related eigenstates. Due to the nonzero topological charge, carried by the Weyl nodes, such a superconductor is necessarily topologically nontrivial, with Majorana surface states coexisting with the Fermi arcs of the normal Weyl metal. We demonstrate that, surprisingly, the anomalous Hall conductivity of such a superconducting Weyl metal coincides with that of a nonsuperconducting one, under certain conditions, in spite of the nonconservation of charge in a superconductor. We relate this to the existence of an extra (nearly) conserved quantity in a Weyl metal, the chiral charge.

Intrinsic Anomalous Hall Effect in Type-II Weyl Semimetals

Recently, a new type of Weyl semimetal called type-II Weyl semimetal has been proposed. Unlike the usual (type-I) Weyl semimetal, which has a point-like Fermi surface, this new type of Weyl semimetal has a tilted conical spectrum around the Weyl point. Here we calculate the anomalous Hall conductivity of a Weyl semimetal with a tilted conical spectrum for a pair of Weyl points, using the Kubo formula. We find that the Hall conductivity is not universal and can change sign as a function of the parameters quantifying the tilts. Our results suggest that even for the case where the separation between the Weyl points vanishes, tilting of the conical spectrum could give rise to a finite anomalous Hall effect, if the tilts of the two cones are not identical.

Chiral Electromagnetic Waves in Weyl Semimetal

We show that Weyl semimetals with broken time-reversal symmetry can host chiral electromag- netic waves. The magnetization that results in a momentum space separation of a pair of opposite chirality Weyl nodes is also responsible for the non-zero gyrotropy parameter in the system. It is then shown that a chiral electromagnetic wave can propagate in a region of space where the gyrotropy parameter changes sign. Such waves are analogs of quantum Hall edge states for photons.

Superconductivity in Weyl metals

We report on a study of intrinsic superconductivity in a Weyl metal, i.e. a doped Weyl semimetal. Two distinct superconducting states are possible in this system in principle: a zero-momentum pairing BCS state, with point nodes in the gap function; and a finite-momentum FFLO-like state, with a full nodeless gap. We find that, in an inversion-symmetric Weyl metal the odd-parity BCS state has a lower energy than the FFLO state, despite the nodes in the gap. The FFLO state, on the other hand, may have a lower energy in a noncentrosymmetric Weyl metal, in which Weyl nodes of opposite chirality have different energy. However, realizing the FFLO state is in general very difficult since the paired states are not related by any exact symmetry, which precludes a weak-coupling superconducting instability. We also discuss some of the physical properties of the nodal BCS state, in particular Majorana and Fermi arc surface states.

Proximity-induced Josephson $π$-Junctions in Topological Insulators

We study two microscopic models of topological insulators in contact with an $s$-wave superconductor. In the first model the superconductor and the topological insulator are tunnel coupled via a layer of scalar and of randomly oriented spin impurities. Here, we require that spin-flip tunneling dominates over spin-conserving one. In the second model the tunnel coupling is realized by an array of single-level quantum dots with randomly oriented spins. It is shown that the tunnel region forms a $π$-junction where the effective order parameter changes sign. Interestingly, due to the random spin orientation the effective descriptions of both models exhibit time-reversal symmetry. We then discuss how the proposed $π$-junctions support topological superconductivity without magnetic fields and can be used to generate and manipulate Kramers pairs of Majorana fermions by gates.

Correlations between Majorana fermions through a superconductor

We consider a model of ballistic quasi-one dimensional semiconducting wire with intrinsic spin-orbit interaction placed on the surface of a bulk s-wave superconductor (SC), in the presence of an external magnetic field. This setup has been shown to give rise to a topological superconducting state in the wire, characterized by a pair of Majorana-fermion (MF) bound states formed at the two ends of the wire. Here we demonstrate that, besides the well-known direct overlap-induced energy splitting, the two MF bound states may hybridize via elastic correlated tunneling processes through virtual quasiparticles states in the SC, giving rise to an additional energy splitting between MF states from the same as well as from different wires.

Correlation effects in disordered conductors with spin accumulation

We consider the effect of electron-electron interaction on the density of states of disordered paramagnetic conductor in the presence of spin accumulation and magnetic field. We show that interaction correction to electron density of states of the paramagnet may exhibit singularities at energies corresponding to the difference between chemical potentials of electrons with opposite spins. We also discuss correlation effects on conductivity in metallic as well as in hopping regimes and show that spin accumulation leads to the negative magnetoconductivity.
