Lattice measurement of the couplings g_infinity and g_Bstar_B_pi

We present the results of a quenched lattice QCD study of the coupling g_hat, in the static heavy quark limit. After combining this with our previous results obtained by using propagating heavy quarks with a mass around the physical charm quark, we are able to interpolate to the b-quark sector. Our results are g_hat_infinity = 0.48 +/- 0.03 +/- 0.11, g_hat_b = 0.58 +/- 0.06 +/- 0.10, and g_Bstar_ B_p = 47 +/- 5 +/- 8.

Infrared Behavior of High-Temperature QCD

The damping rate γ_t(p) of on-shell transverse gluons with ultrasoft momentum p is calculated in the context of next-to-leading-order hard-thermal-loop-summed perturbation of high-temperature QCD. It is obtained in an expansion to second order in p. The first coefficient is recovered but that of order p^2 is found divergent in the infrared. Divergences from light-like momenta do also occur but are circumvented. Our result and method are critically discussed, particularly regarding a Ward identity obtained in the literature. When enforcing the equality between γ_t(0) and γ_l(0), a rough estimate of the magnetic mass is obtained. Carrying a similar calculation in the context of scalar quantum electrodynamics shows that the early ultrasoft-momentum expansion we make has little to do with the infrared sensitivity of the result.

Monte Carlo Study of Four-Spinon Dynamic Structure Function in Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Model

Using Monte Carlo integration methods, we describe the behavior of the exact four-spinon dynamic structure function $S_{4}$ in the antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 Heisenberg quantum spin chain as a function of the neutron energy $ω$ and momentum transfer $k$. We also determine the four-spinon continuum, the extent of the region in the $(k,ω)$ plane outside which $S_{4}$ is identically zero. In each case, the behavior of $S_{4}$ is shown to be consistent with the four-spinon continuum and compared to the one of the exact two-spinon dynamic structure function $S_{2}$. Overall shape similarity is noted.

Infrared Sensitivity in Damping Rate for Very Soft Moving Fermions in Finite Temperature QED

We calculate the fermion damping rate to second order in powers of the external momentum $p$ in the context of QED at finite temperature using the hard-thermal-loop (HTL) summation scheme. We find that the coefficient of order $p^{2}$ is divergent in the infrared whereas the two others are finite. This result suggests that the htl-based pertubation is infrared sensitive at next-to-leading order.

Heavy to light vector meson semileptonic decays

New (preliminary) results for the form factors relevant for the semileptonic decays of heavy pseudoscalar to a light vector meson are presented. In particular, we discuss the form factors for D --> K* and B --> rho modes.

A lattice estimate of the g_{D^* D pi} coupling

We present the results of the first direct determination of the g_{D^* D pi} coupling using lattice QCD. From our simulations in the quenched approximation, we obtain g_{D^* D pi} = 18.8 +/- 2.3^{+1.1}_{-2.0} and hat(g) = 0.67 +/- 0.08^{+0.04}_{-0.06}. It is in agreement with a recent experimental result from CLEO.

First lattice QCD estimate of the g_{D^* D pi} coupling

We present the results of the first lattice QCD study of the strong coupling g_{D^* D pi}. From our simulations in the quenched approximation, we obtain g_{D^* D pi} = 18.8 +/- 2.3^{+1.1}_{-2.0} and hat(g)_c = 0.67 +/- 0.08^{+0.04}_{-0.06}. Whereas previous theoretical studies gave different predictions, our result favours a large value for hat(g)_c. It agrees very well with the recent experimental value by CLEO. hat(g) varies very little with the heavy mass and we find in the infinite mass limit hat(g)_infinity = 0.69(18).

The Pion Light-Cone Wave Function Phi_pi on the lattice: a partonic signal?

We determine the conditions required to study the pion light-cone wave function Phi_pi with a new method: a direct display of the partons constituting the pion. We present the preliminary results of a lattice computation of Phi_pi following this direction. An auxiliary scalar-quark is introduced. The spectroscopy of its bound states is studied. We observe some indications of a partonic behavior of the system of this scalar-quark and the anti-quark.

Heavy --> Light semileptonic decays of pseudoscalar mesons from lattice QCD

We have computed the form factors for B --> pi and D --> K(pi) semileptonic decays on the lattice by using full non-perturbative O(a) improvement, in the quenched approximation. Our results are expressed in terms of few parameters which describe the q^2-dependence and normalization of the form factors.

Preliminaries on a Lattice Analysis of The Pion Light-cone Wave function: a Partonic Signal?

We present the first attempt of a new method to compute the pion light-cone wave function (LCWF) on the lattice. We compute the matrix element between the pion and the vacuum of a non-local operator: the propagator of a ``scalar quark'' (named for short "squark"). A theoretical analysis shows that for some kinematical conditions (energetic pion and hard squark) this matrix element depends dominantly on the LCWF $Φ_π(u), u\in [0,1]$. On the lattice, the discretization of the parton momenta imposes further constraints on the pion momentum. The two-point Green functions made of squark-quark and squark-squark fields show hadron-like bound-state behaviour and verify the standard energy spectrum. We show some indications that during a short time, after being created, the system of the spectator quark and the squark behave like partons, before they form a hadron-like bound state. This short time is the place where the partonic wave function has to be looked for.

Constraints on a general 3-generation neutrino mass matrix from neutrino data: application to the MSSM with R-parity violation

We consider a general symmetric $(3\times 3)$ mass matrix for three generations of neutrinos. Imposing the constraints, from the atmospheric neutrino and solar neutrino anomalies as well as from the CHOOZ experiment, on the mass squared differences and on the mixing angles, we identify the ranges of allowed inputs for the 6 matrix elements. We apply our results to Majorana left-handed neutrino masses generated at tree level and through fermion--sfermion loop diagrams in the MSSM with R-parity violation. The present experimental results on neutrinos from laboratories, cosmology and astrophysics are implemented to either put bounds on trilinear ($λ_{ijk}, λ'_{ijk}$) and bilinear ($μ_{e,μ,τ}$) R-parity-violating couplings or constrain combinations of products of these couplings.

Damping of very soft moving quarks in high-temperature QCD

We determine the analytic expression of the damping rates for very soft moving quarks in an expansion to second order in powers of their momentum in the context of QCD at high temperature. The calculation is performed using the hard-thermal-loop-summed perturbation scheme. We describe the range of validity of the expansion and make a comparison with other calculations, particularly those using a magnetic mass as a shield from infrared sensitivity. We discuss the possible occurrence of infrared divergences in our results and argue that they are due to magnetic sensitivity.

Decays of Heavy Mesons

We present preliminary results for heavy to light transitions of pseudoscalar mesons, induced by the vector and tensor operators. This lattice study is performed in quenched approximation, by using the nonperturbatively improved Wilson action and operators. We also update the values of the heavy-light meson decay constants.

An infrared singularity in the damping rate for longitudinal gluons in hot QCD

We calculate $γ_l(0)$, the damping rate for longitudinal on-shell gluons with zero momentum in hot QCD using the hard-thermal-loop (htl) scheme. We find it to be divergent in the infrared, which means that in this scheme $γ_l(0)$ is different from $γ_t(0)$, the corresponding damping rate for transverse gluons which is known to be finite. This result suggests that the htl scheme is infrared sensitive and thus may need to be improved upon in this sector. We discuss this issue after we present our calculation.

Addendum to Finite-size effects on multibody neutrino exchange

The interaction energy of the neutrons due to massless neutrino exchange in a neutron star has recently been proved, using an effective theory, to be extremely small and infrared-safe. Our comment here is of conceptual order: two approaches to compute the total interaction energy density have recently been proposed. Here, we study the connection between these two approaches. From CP invariance, we argue that the resulting interaction energy has to be even in the parameter $b=-G_F n_n /\sqrt{2}$, which expresses the static neutrino potential created by a neutron medium of density $n_n$.

Inelastic photon-neutrino interactions using an effective Lagrangian

We justify the feasibility of substituting a photon leg by a neutrino current in the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian to obtain an effective Lagrangian for the process $γν\toγγν$ and its crossed reactions. We establish the link between these processes and the four-photon scattering in both the Standard Model and the effective theory. As an application, we compute the processes $γν\toγγν$ and $γγ\toγν\barν$, give their polarized cross sections, and show how to use the $γγ\toγγ$ results as a check. We settle the question about the disagreement between two computations in the literature concerning the reaction $γγ\to γν\barν$.

Five-leg photon-neutrino interactions

In a first part, we justify the feasibility of substituting a photon leg by a neutrino current in the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian to obtain an effective Lagrangian for the process $γν\toγγν$ and its crossed reactions. We establish the link between these processes and the four-photon scattering in both the Standard Model and the effective theory. As an application, we compute in this effective theory the processes $γν\toγγν$ and $γγ\toγν\barν$ and show how to use the $γγ\toγγ$ results as a check. We settle the question of the disagreement between two computations in the literature concerning the reaction $γγ\to γν\barν$. In the second part, we present results of the direct computation of the photon-neutrino five-leg processes in the Standard Model, discuss possible astrophysical implications of our results, and provide simple fits to the exact expressions.
