A next-generation LHC heavy-ion experiment

The present document discusses plans for a compact, next-generation multi-purpose detector at the LHC as a follow-up to the present ALICE experiment. The aim is to build a nearly massless barrel detector consisting of truly cylindrical layers based on curved wafer-scale ultra-thin silicon sensors with MAPS technology, featuring an unprecedented low material budget of 0.05% X$_0$ per layer, with the innermost layers possibly positioned inside the beam pipe. In addition to superior tracking and vertexing capabilities over a wide momentum range down to a few tens of MeV/$c$, the detector will provide particle identification via time-of-flight determination with about 20~ps resolution. In addition, electron and photon identification will be performed in a separate shower detector. The proposed detector is conceived for studies of pp, pA and AA collisions at luminosities a factor of 20 to 50 times higher than possible with the upgraded ALICE detector, enabling a rich physics program ranging from measurements with electromagnetic probes at ultra-low transverse momenta to precision physics in the charm and beauty sector.

Impact-parameter analysis of the new TOTEM pp data at 13 TeV: black disk limit excess

We revisit a discussion on the impact-parameter dependence of proton-proton elastic scattering amplitude with improved uncertainty calculation. This analysis allows to reveal the asymptotic properties of hadron interactions. New data indicates that the impact-parameter elastic scattering amplitude is slightly above the black disk limit at 13~TeV c.m.s. energy of the LHC reaching a value of $\mathrm{Im}\,H(s,0) = 0.512\pm 0.001\ \text{(sys+stat)} \pm 0.004\ \text{(norm)}$ confirming that black disk limit is violated at current collision energy, however it was not exceeded at 7~TeV. The growth trend of the impact-parameter amplitude imaginary part, extrapolated from previous and new data, indicates that it is unlikely that the amplitude is close to saturation. New analysis is consistent with smooth energy evolution of the elastic scattering amplitude and supersedes the earlier conclusion on the black disk limit excess observed at 7~TeV.

Impact analysis of TOTEM data at the LHC: black disk limit exceeded

We discuss the profile of the impact--parameter dependent elastic scattering amplitude. Extraction of impact-parameter dependence from the dataset with inclusion of the experimental data on elastic scattering at the LHC energies helps to reveal the asymptotics of hadron interactions. Analysis of the data clearly indicates that the impact-parameter elastic scattering amplitude exceed the black disk limit at the LHC energy 7TeV and the inelastic overlap function reaches its maximum value at $b>0$

Can the "standard" unitarized Regge models describe the TOTEM data?

The standard Regge poles are considered as inputs for two unitarization methods: eikonal and U-matrix. It is shown that only models with three input pomerons and two input odderons can describe the high energy data on $pp$ and $\bar pp$ elastic scattering including the new data from Tevatron and LHC. However, it seems that the both considered models (eikonal and U-matrix) require a further modification (e.g., to explore nonlinear reggeon trajectories and/or nonexponential vertex functions) for a more satisfactory description of the data at 19.0 GeV$\leq \sqrt{s}\leq$ 7 TeV and 0.01 $\leq |t|\leq $14.2 GeV$^{2}$.

Inclusive J/psi production in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV

The ALICE Collaboration has measured inclusive J/psi production in pp collisions at a center of mass energy sqrt(s)=2.76 TeV at the LHC. The results presented in this Letter refer to the rapidity ranges |y|<0.9 and 2.5<y<4 and have been obtained by measuring the electron and muon pair decay channels, respectively. The integrated luminosities for the two channels are L^e_int=1.1 nb^-1 and L^mu_int=19.9 nb^-1, and the corresponding signal statistics are N_J/psi^e+e-=59 +/- 14 and N_J/psi^mu+mu-=1364 +/- 53. We present dsigma_J/psi/dy for the two rapidity regions under study and, for the forward-y range, d^2sigma_J/psi/dydp_t in the transverse momentum domain 0<p_t<8 GeV/c. The results are compared with previously published results at sqrt(s)=7 TeV and with theoretical calculations.

Dispersion relations for meson-proton and proton-proton forward elastic scattering

An analysis of the data on forward $pp, \bar pp, π^{\pm}p$ and $K^{\pm}p$ scattering is performed making use of the single- and double-subtraction integral and comparing with derivative dispersion relations for amplitudes. Various pomeron and odderon models for the total cross sections are considered and compared. The real part of the amplitude is calculated via dispersion relations. It is shown that the integral dispersion relations lead to a better description of the data for $\sqrt{s}>$5 GeV. Predictions of the considered models for the TOTEM experiment at LHC energies are given

Predictions for TOTEM experiment at LHC from integral and derivative dispersion relations

Integral and derivative dispersion relations (IDR and DDR) are considered for the proton-proton and antiproton-proton forward scattering amplitudes. A scheme for calculation of the corrections to asymptotic form for the DDR is presented. The data on the total proton-proton and antiproton-proton cross sections as well as the data on the ratios $ρ$ of real to imaginary part of the forward scattering amplitudes have been analyzed by the IDR and DDR methods within high-energy Regge models. Regge parametrizations of high-energy total cross sections supplemented by the properly calculated low-energy part of the dispersion integral (from the two-proton threshold up to center-of-mass energy 5 GeV) allow to reproduce well the $ρ$ data at low energies with the only free parameter, subtraction constant. It is shown that three models for the pomeron, simple pole pomeron (with intercept large than unity), tripole pomeron and dipole pomeron (the both with the unit value intercept) lead to practically equivalent description of the available data at $\sqrt{s}>$5 GeV. Predictions for the TOTEM measurements of cross section and $ρ$ at the center-of-mass energies 7 and 14 GeV are given.

Inclusive distributions in the unitarized pomeron models

High energy inclusive hadron production in the central kinematical region is analyzed within the models of unitarized pomeron. It is shown that the sum of multipomeron exchanges with intercept $α_P(0)>1$ reproduce qualitatively contribution of the triple pole (at $t=0$) pomeron to inclusive cross section. Basing on this analogy we then suggest a general form of unitarized pomeron contributions (in particular the dipole or tripole pomeron) to inclusive cross section. They lead to a parabolic form of the rapidity distribution giving $ \propto \ln^3s$ (tripole) or $ \propto \ln^2s$ (dipole). The models considered with suggested parametrization of $p_t$-dependence for cross sections well describe the rapidity distributions data in $pp$ and $\bar pp$ interactions at energy $\sqrt{s}\geq 200$ GeV. The predictions for one particle inclusive production at LHC energies are given.
