Topological and non-topological kink families in non-linear $(\mathbb{S}^1\times \mathbb{S}^1)$-Sigma models

In this paper we construct a family of Hamilton-Jacobi separable non-linear $\mathbb{S}^1\times\mathbb{S}^1$ Sigma models for which the kink variety can be analytically identified and for which the linear stability of the emerging kinks is ensured. Furthermore, a model with only one vacuum point is found, where all kinks are forced to be non-topological. The non-simply connectedness of the torus guarantees the global stability of all the non-topological kinks in these models.

Defects composed of kinks and Q-balls: analytical solutions and stability

In this paper all the defect-type solutions in a family of scalar field theories with a real and a complex field in (1+1) dimensional Minkowski spacetime have been analytically identified. Three types of solutions have been found: (a) topological kinks without the presence of $Q$-balls, (b) defects which consist of a topological kink coupled with a $Q$-ball and (c) a one-parameter family of solutions where a $Q$-ball is combined with a non-topological soliton. The properties of these solutions and its linear stability are also discussed.

Wobbling kinks in a two-component scalar field theory: Interaction between shape modes

In this paper the interaction between the shape modes of the wobbling kinks arising in the family of two-component MSTB scalar field theory models is studied. The spectrum of the second order small kink fluctuation in this model has two localized vibrational modes associated to longitudinal and orthogonal fluctuations with respect to the kink orbit. It has been found that the excitation of the orthogonal shape mode immediately triggers the longitudinal one. In the first component channel the kink emits radiation with twice the orthogonal wobbling frequency (not the longitudinal one as happens in the $ϕ^4$-model). The radiation emitted in the second component has two dominant frequencies: one is three times the frequency of the orthogonal wobbling mode and the other is the sum of the frequencies of the longitudinal and orthogonal vibration modes. This feature is explained analytically using perturbation expansion theories.

Kinks in massive non-linear ${\mathbb S}^1\times{\mathbb S}^1$-Sigma models

In this paper the whole kink varieties arising in several massive non-linear Sigma models whose target space is the torus ${\mathbb S}^1\times{\mathbb S}^1$ are analytically calculated. This possibility underlies the construction of first-order differential equations by adapting the Bogomolny procedure to non-Euclidean spaces. Among the families of solutions non-topological kinks connecting the same vacuum are found. This class of solutions are usually considered to be not globally stable. However, in this context the topological constraints obtained by the non-simply connectedness of the target space turn these non-topological kinks into globally stable solutions. The analytical resolution of the equations allows the complete study of the linear stability for some basic kinks.

Asymmetric scattering between kinks and wobblers

The asymmetric scattering between wobblers and kinks in the standard $ϕ^4$ model is numerically investigated in two different scenarios. First, the collision between wobblers with opposite phase is analyzed. Here, a destructive interference between the shape modes of the colliding wobblers takes place at the impact time. The second scenario involves the scattering between a wobbler and an (unexcited) kink. In this case the energy transfer from the wobbler to the kink can be examined. The dependence of the final velocities and wobbling amplitudes of the scattered wobblers on the collision velocity and on the initial wobbling amplitude is discussed. Both situations lead to very different fractal structures in the velocity diagrams.

Kink scattering in a generalized Wess-Zumino model

In this paper, kink scattering in the dimensional reduction of the bosonic sector of a one-parameter family of generalized Wess-Zumino models with three vacuum points is discussed. The value of the model parameter determines the specific location of the vacua. The influence of the vacuum arrangements (evolving from three collinear vacua to three vacua placed at the vertices of an equilateral triangle) on the kink scattering is investigated. Two different regimes can be distinguished: in the first one, two symmetric BPS kinks/antikinks arise whereas in the second one a new different BPS kink/antikink emerges, with the exception of a three-fold rotational symmetry case, where the three topological defects are identical. The scattering between the two symmetric kinks is thoroughly analyzed. Two different scattering channels have been found: kink-kink reflection and kink-kink hybridization. In the last case, the collision between the two symmetric kinks gives rise to the third different kink. Resonance phenomena also appear allowing a vibrating kink to split into two symmetric kinks moving away.

Scattering between wobbling kinks

In this paper the scattering between a wobbling kink and a wobbling antikink in the standard $ϕ^4$ model is numerically investigated. The dependence of the final velocities, wobbling amplitudes and frequencies of the scattered kinks on the collision velocity and on the initial wobbling amplitude is discussed. The fractal structure becomes more intricate due to the emergence of new resonance windows and the splitting of those arising in the non-excited kink scattering. Outside this phase the final wobbling amplitude exhibits a linear dependence of the collision velocity whereas the final frequency is a decreasing function. By contrast these magnitudes are almost independent of the initial wobbling amplitude.

Two species of semi-local cosmic strings in Abelian gauged $\mathbb{CP}^2$-sigma models coupled to gravity

We study a semi-local Abelian Higgs sigma model with $\mathbb{CP}^2$-valued scalar fields coupled to gravity. We establish the conditions needed for self-duality in this system and obtain cosmic strings, both of self-dual character and out of the self-dual point, in the reference chart of $\mathbb{CP}^2$. In any of the other two charts of a minimum atlas, the transition functions break the global $SU(2)$ symmetry to the Abelian subgroup $e^{i σ^3 α}$. In this context, using the transition functions a new self-dual structure can be constructed, which defines a second species of cosmic strings. Because of the presence of a potential energy for the scalar fields, each species takes values in a different bounded region of the target space and is most naturally described using a particular chart of $\mathbb{CP}^2$.

Soliton Fermionic number from the heat kernel expansion

We consider different methods of calculating the (fractional) fermion number of solitons based on the heat kernel expansion. We derive a formula for the localized eta function a more systematic version of the derivative expansion for spectral assymmetry and that provides a more systematic version of the derivative expansion for spectral asymmetry and compute the fermion number in a multiflavour extension of the Goldstone-Wilczek model. We also propose an improved expansionof the heat kernelthat allows the tackling ofthe convergence issues and permits an automated computation of the coefficients

Asymmetric kink scattering in a two-component scalar field theory model

In this paper the kink scattering in a two-component scalar field theory model in (1+1)-Minkowskian space-time is addressed. The potential term $U(ϕ_1,ϕ_2)$ is given by a polynomial of fourth degree in the first field component and of sixth degree in the second one. The novel characteristic of this model is that the kink variety describes two different types of extended particles. These particles are characterized by its topological charge but also by a new feature determined by a discrete charge $Λ=0,\pm 1$. For this reason, the kink scattering involves a very rich variety of processes, which comprises kink annihilation, reflection, charge exchange, transmutation, etc. It has been found that not only the final velocity of the scattered kinks, but also the final nature of the emerging lumps after the collision are very sensitive on the initial velocities. Asymmetric scattering processes arise when Type I and Type II particles are obliged to collide. In this case, ten different final scenarios are possible. Symmetric scattering events are also discussed.

Domain walls in a non-linear $\mathbb{S}^2$-sigma model with homogeneous quartic polynomial potential

In this paper the domain wall solutions of a Ginzburg-Landau non-linear $\mathbb{S}^2$-sigma hybrid model are exactly calculated. There exist two types of basic domain walls and two families of composite domain walls. The domain wall solutions have been identified by using a Bogomolny arrangement in a system of sphero-conical coordinates on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$. The stability of all the domain walls is also investigated.

A generalized Holling type II model for the interaction between dextral-sinistral snails and Pareas snakes

Pareatic snakes possess outstanding asymmetry in the mandibular tooth number, which has probably been caused by its evolution to improve the feeding on the predominant dextral snails. Gene mutation can generate chiral inversion on the snail body. A sinistral snail population can thrive in this ecological context. The interactions between dextral/sinistral snails and Pareas snakes are modeled in this paper by using a new generalized functional response of Holling type II. Distinct Pareas species show different bilateral asymmetry degrees. This parameter plays an essential role in our model and determines the evolution of the populations. Stability of the solutions is also analyzed for different regimes in the space of parameters.

Kink dynamics in the MSTB Model

In this paper kink scattering processes are investigated in the Montonen-Sarker-Trullinger-Bishop model. The MSTB model is in fact a one-parametric family of relativistic scalar field theories living in a one-time one-space Minkowski space-time which encompasses two coupled scalar fields. Between the static solutions of the model two kinds of topological kinks are distinguished in a precise range of the family parameter. In that regime there exists one unstable kink exhibiting only one non-null component of the scalar field. Another type of topological kink solutions, stable in this case, includes two different kinks for which the two-components of the scalar field are non-null. Both one-component and two-component topological kinks are accompanied by their antikink partner. The decay of disintegration of the unstable kink to one of the stable pair plus radiation is numerically computed. The pair of stable two-component kinks living respectively on upper and lower half-ellipses in field space belong to identical topological sectors in configuration space and provides an ideal playground to address several scattering events involving one kink and either its own antikinks or either the antikink of the other stable kink of the pair. By means of a numerical computation procedure we shall find and describe interesting physical phenomena. Bion (kink-antikink oscillations) formation, kink reflection, kink-antikink annihilation, kink transmutation and resonances are examples of these type of events. The appearance of these special phenomena emerging in kink-antikink scattering configurations depends critically on the initial collision velocity and the chosen value of the coupling constant parametrizing the family of MSTB models.

Kink dynamics in a system of two coupled scalar fields in two space-time dimensions

In this paper we examine the scattering processes among the members of a rich family of kinks which arise in a (1+1)-dimensional relativistic two scalar field theory. These kinks carry two different topological charges that determine the mutual interactions between the basic energy lumps (extended particles) described by these topological defects. Processes like topological charge exchange, kink-antikink bound state formation or kink repulsion emerge depending on the charges of the scattered particles. Two-bounce resonant windows have been found in the antikink-kink scattering processes, but not in the kink-antikink interactions.

Quantum magnetic flux lines, BPS vortex zero modes, and one-loop string tension shifts

Spectral heat kernel/zeta function regularization procedures are employed in this paper to control the divergences arising from vacuum fluctuations of Bogomolnyi-Prasad-Sommerfield vortices in the Abelian Higgs model. Zero modes of vortex fluctuations are the source of difficulties appearing when the standard Gilkey-de Witt expansion is performed. A modified GdW expansion is developed to diminish the impact of the infrared divergences due to the vortex zero modes. With this new technique at our disposal we compute the one-loop vortex mass shift in the planar AHM and the quantum corrections to the string tension of the magnetic flux tubes living in three dimensions. In both cases it is observed that weak repulsive forces surge between these classically non interacting topological defects caused by vacuum quantum fluctuations.

A note on BPS vortex bound states

In this note we investigate bound states, where scalar and vector bosons are trapped by BPS vortices in the Abelian Higgs model with a critical ratio of the couplings. A class of internal modes of fluctuation around cylindrically symmetric BPS vortices is characterized mathematically, analysing the spectrum of the second-order fluctuation operator when the Higgs and vector boson masses are equal. A few of these bound states with low values of quantized magnetic flux are described fully, and their main properties are discussed.

New models for two real scalar fields and their kinklike solutions

In this work we study the presence of kinks in models described by two real scalar fields in bi-dimensional space-time. We generate new two-field models, constructed from distinct but important one-field models, and we solve them with techniques that we introduce in the current work. We illustrate the results with several examples of current interest to high energy physics.
