Combinatorics of KP hierarchy structural constants

Following Natanzon-Zabrodin, we explore the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy as an infinite system of mutually consistent relations on the second derivatives of the free energy with some universal coefficients. From this point of view, various combinatorial properties of these coefficients naturally highlight certain non-trivial properties of the KP hierarchy. Furthermore, this approach allows us to suggest several interesting directions of the KP deformation via a deformation of these coefficients. We also construct an eigenvalue matrix model, whose correlators fully describe the universal KP coefficients, which allows us to further study their properties and generalizations.

Genus expansion of matrix models and $\hbar$ expansion of KP hierarchy

We study $\hbar$ expansion of the KP hierarchy following Takasaki-Takebe arXiv:hep-th/9405096 considering several examples of matrix model $τ$-functions with natural genus expansion. Among the examples there are solutions of KP equations of special interest, such as generating function for simple Hurwitz numbers, Hermitian matrix model, Kontsevich model and Brezin-Gross-Witten model. We show that all these models with parameter $\hbar$ are $τ$-functions of the $\hbar$-KP hierarchy and the expansion in $\hbar$ for the $\hbar$-KP coincides with the genus expansion for these models. Furthermore, we show a connection of recent papers considering the $\hbar$-formulation of the KP hierarchy arXiv:1509.04472, arXiv:1512.07172 with original Takasaki-Takebe approach. We find that in this approach the recovery of enumerative geometric meaning of $τ$-functions is straightforward and algorithmic.

Dataset of an EEG-based BCI experiment in Virtual Reality and on a Personal Computer

We describe the experimental procedures for a dataset that we have made publicly available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.2605204 in mat (Mathworks, Natick, USA) and csv formats. This dataset contains electroencephalographic recordings on 21 subjects doing a visual P300 experiment on PC (personal computer) and VR (virtual reality). The visual P300 is an event-related potential elicited by a visual stimulation, peaking 240-600 ms after stimulus onset. The experiment was designed in order to compare the use of a P300-based brain-computer interface on a PC and with a virtual reality headset, concerning the physiological, subjective and performance aspects. The brain-computer interface is based on electroencephalography (EEG). EEG were recorded thanks to 16 electrodes. The virtual reality headset consisted of a passive head-mounted display, that is, a head-mounted display which does not include any electronics at the exception of a smartphone. This experiment was carried out at GIPSA-lab (University of Grenoble Alpes, CNRS, Grenoble-INP) in 2018, and promoted by the IHMTEK Company (Interaction Homme-Machine Technologie). The study was approved by the Ethical Committee of the University of Grenoble Alpes (Comit{é} d'Ethique pour la Recherche Non-Interventionnelle). Python code for manipulating the data is available at https://github.com/plcrodrigues/py.VR.EEG.2018-GIPSA. The ID of this dataset is VR.EEG.2018-GIPSA.

Efficient proton acceleration from laser-driven cryogenic hydrogen target of various shapes

We theoretically investigate high energy, collimated proton beam with three dimensional particle in cell simulations of ultrashort petawatt laser interaction with cryogenic hydrogen target of various shapes. Here we show that under appropriate conditions between the laser and target parameters, the protons are accelerated to high energies mainly due to collisionless shock acceleration mechanism combined with TNSA. The dependence of the protonic energy on the laser field, target shape and thickness is reported. It is demonstrated that the irradiation of intense laser (20fs, 2PW) with cryogenic hydrogen target at optimal thickness allows the efficient generation of high energy proton beam (100 MeV) of small divergence. Our results also indicate that diffracted laser field strongly affects the collimation of ions as it passes beside the mass limited target. This approach predicts a possible pathway to control laser driven ion sources.

Highly spin-polarized deuterium atoms from the UV dissociation of Deuterium Iodide

We report the production of highly spin-polarized Deuterium atoms via photodissociation of deuterium iodide at 270 nm. The velocity distribution of both the deuterium and iodine photodissociation products is performed via velocity mapping slice-imaging. Additionally, the angular momentum polarization of the iodine products is studied using polarization-sensitive ionization schemes. The results are consistent with excitation of the $A^1Π_1$ state followed by adiabatic dissociation. The process produces $\sim$100\% electronically polarized deuterium atoms at the time of dissociation, which is then converted to $\sim 60\%$ nuclear D polarization after $\sim 1.6$ ns. These production times for hyperpolarized deuterium allow collision-limited densities of $\sim 10^{18}$ cm$^{-3}$, which is $\sim 10^6$ times higher than conventional (Stern-Gerlach separation) methods. We discuss how such high-density hyperpolarized deuterium atoms can be combined with laser fusion to measure polarized D-D fusion cross sections.

GHz photon-activated hopping between localized states in a silicon quantum dot

We discuss the effects of gigahertz photon irradiation on a degenerately phosphorous-doped silicon quantum dot, in particular, the creation of voltage offsets on gate leads and the tunneling of one or two electrons via Coulomb blockade lifting at 4.2K. A semi-analytical model is derived that explains the main features observed experimentally. Ultimately both effects may provide an efficient way to optically control and operate electrically isolated structures by microwave pulses. In quantum computing architectures, these results may lead to the use of microwave multiplexing to manipulate quantum states in a multi-qubit configuration.

Enhanced Proton Acceleration by an Ultrashort Laser Interaction with Structured Dynamic Plasma Targets

We experimentally demonstrate a notably enhanced acceleration of protons to high energy by relatively modest ultrashort laser pulses and structured dynamical plasma targets. Realized by special deposition of snow targets on sapphire substrates and using carefully planned pre-pulses, high proton yield emitted in a narrow solid angle with energy above 21MeV were detected from a 5TW laser. Our simulations predict that using the proposed scheme protons can be accelerated to energies above 150MeV by 100TW laser systems.

Itinerant vibronic polarons: A Merrifield approach I. Low energy range calculations

We extend Merrifield's Variational Ansatz in the variational band theory of polarons to cover a frame of two electronic bands mixed by an Einstein phonon. The Hamiltonian is composed of the local and hopping energy terms, the vibrational energy, and a band-mixing term linear in the electron-phonon coupling. The eigenstate is a linear combination of Merrifield states in either electron band. The variational equations are solved numerically, so as to obtain the energy vs. momentum relation in ground state. Our variational method generates either Jahn-Teller polarons if the electronic bands degenerate or Pseudo-Jahn-Teller polarons if they nearly degenerate, both entities regarded as likely carriers in metal-oxide manifolds of high-Tc superconducting cuprates and colossal magnetoresistance exhibiting manganates.
