New Simple Method for Analysis of Extensive Air Showers

Cosmic rays have valuable information about universe surroundings us. Finding energy, mass and arrival direction of primary cosmic ray particle are the most important aspects of extensive air shower studies. In order to determine these parameters, arrival direction and core position of extensive air showers should be determined at first. In this article, a new method has been introduced that utilizes arrival time information of secondary particles of extensive air showers for finding their core location and correcting plane wave front approximation so that calculate the arrival direction of extensive air showers. This method does not need number sensitive detectors-detectors which are sensitive to the number of crossing particles- and consequently there is no need for lateral distribution models. This model has been developed by analysis of simulated events generated by CORSIKA package.

On Shadow of the Moon in Extensive Air Shower Data

A new technique has been devised for the analysis of extensive air shower data in observing the effect of the moon on this data. In this technique the number of EAS events with arrival directions falling in error circles centered about the moving moon is compared to the mean number of events falling in error circles with centers randomly chosen in the sky. For any assumed angular radius of the error circle the deficit in EAS event count in the direction of moon i.e., Nsky-Nmoon which is a moon-related effect is interpreted as the shadow of the moon. A simple theoretical model has been developed to relate Nsky to the angular radius of the error circle and has been applied to the counts from the moon's direction in order to extract the physical parameters of the shadow of the moon. The technique and the theoretical model has been used on 1.7 *10^5 EAS events recorded at Alborz observatory.

Investigation of Energy Spectrum of EGRET Gamma-ray Sources by an Extensive Air Shower Experiment

Ultra-High-Energy (UHE) ($E>100 $TeV) Extensive Air Showers (EASs) have been monitored for a period of five years (1997-2003), using a small array of scintillation detectors in Tehran, Iran. The data have been analyzed to take in to account of the dependence of source counts on zenith angle. Because of varying thickness of the overlaying atmosphere, the shower count rate is extremely dependent on zenith angle. During a calendar year different sources come in the field of view of the array at varying zenith angles and have different effective observation time equivalent to zenith in a day. High energy gamma-ray sources from the EGRET third catalogue where observed and the data were analyzed using an excess method. Upper limits were obtained for 10 EGRET sources. Then we investigated the EAS event rates for these 10 sources and obtained a flux for each of them using parameters of our experiment results and simulations. Finally we investigated the gamma-ray spectrum in the UHE range using these fluxes with reported fluxes of the EGRET sources.
