Comment on "Observation of neutronless fusion reactions in picosecond laser plasmas"

The paper by Belyaev et al. [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 72}, 026406 (2005)] reported the first experimental observation of alpha particles produced in the thermonuclear reaction $^{11}$B($p,α$)$^{8}$Be induced by laser-irradiation on a $^{11}$B polyethylene (CH$_2$) composite target. The laser used in the experiment is characterized by a picosecond pulse duration and a peak of intensity of 2$\times10^{18}$ W/cm$^2$. We suggest that both the background-reduction method adopted in their detection system and the choice of the detection energy region of the reaction products are possibly inadequate. Consequently the total yield reported underestimates the true yield. Based on their observation, we give an estimation of the total yield to be higher than their conclusion, i.e., of the order of 10$^5 α$ per shot.

Isospin Dependence of Incomplete Fusion Reactions at 25 Mev/a

40Ca+40,48Ca,46Ti reactions at 25 MeV/A have been studied using the 4p CHIMERA detector. An isospin effect on the competition between incomplete fusion and dissipative binary reaction mechanisms has been observed. The probability of producing a compound system is observed to be lower in the case of N=Z colliding systems as compared to the case of reactions induced on the more neutron rich 48Ca target. Predictions based on CoMD-II calculations show that the competition between fusion-like and dissipative reactions, for the selected centrality, can strongly constraint the parameterization of symmetry energy and its density dependence in the nuclear equation of state.

Study of the dissipative binary channels in the 107Ag+58Ni reaction at 52 MeV/nucleon

The binary dissipative channels are characterized by the presence of two main fragments in the exit channel. They have been studied in the 107Ag+58Ni reaction at 52 MeV/nucleon of bombarding energy. For that purpose a modified version of the INDRA multidetector has been used in conjunction with a part of the CHIMERA multidetector. Preliminary results on the excitation energy and intrinsic angular momentum of the quasi-projectile are reported and compared to a dynamical calculation.
