Time-Resolved Cathodoluminescence in an Ultrafast Transmission Electron Microscope

Ultra-fast transmission electron microscopy (UTEM) combines sub-picosecond time-resolution with the versatility of TEM spectroscopies. It allows one to study the dynamics of materials properties combining complementary techniques. However, until now, time-resolved cathodoluminescence, which is expected to give access to the optical properties dynamics, was still unavailable in a UTEM. In this paper, we report time-resolved cathodoluminescence measurements in an ultrafast transmission electron microscope. We measured lifetime maps, with a 12 nm spatial resolution and sub-nanoseconds resolution, of nano-diamonds with a high density of NV center. This study paves the way to new applications of UTEM and to correlative studies of optically active nanostructures.

High brightness ultrafast Transmission Electron Microscope based on a laser-driven cold-field emission source: principle and applications

We report on the development of an ultrafast Transmission Electron Microscope based on a laser-driven cold-field emission source. We first describe the instrument before reporting on numerical simulations of the laser-driven electron emission. These simulations predict the temporal and spectral properties of the femtosecond electron pulses generated in our ultrafast electron source. We then discuss the effects that contribute to the spatial, temporal and spectral broadening of these electron pulses during their propagation from the electron source to the sample and finally to the detectors of the electron microscope. The spectro-temporal properties are then characterized in an electron/photon cross-correlation experiment based on the detection of electron energy gains. We finally illustrate the potential of this instrument for ultrafast electron holography and ultrafast electron diffraction.

AOPDF-shaped optical parametric amplifier output in the visible

Time Shaping of ultrashort visible pulses has been performed using a specially designed Acousto-Optic Programmable Dispersive Filter of 50% efficiency at the output of a two-stage noncollinear optical parametric amplifier. The set-up is compact and reliable. It provides a tunable shaped source in the visible with unique features: 4 ps shaping window with preserved tunability over 500-650 nm, and pulses as short as 30 fs. Several $μ$J output energy is easily obtained.
