Signatures of Self-Organised Criticality in an Ultracold Atomic Gas

Self organisation provides an elegant explanation for how complex structures emerge and persist throughout nature. Surprisingly often, these structures exhibit remarkably similar scale-invariant properties. While this is sometimes captured by simple models that feature a critical point as an attractor for the dynamics, the connection to real-world systems is exceptionally hard to test quantitatively. Here we observe three key signatures of self-organised criticality in the dynamics of a driven-dissipative gas of ultracold atoms: (i) self-organisation to a stationary state that is largely independent of the initial conditions, (ii) scale-invariance of the final density characterised by a unique scaling function, and (iii) large fluctuations of the number of excited atoms (avalanches) obeying a characteristic power-law distribution. This establishes a well-controlled platform for investigating self-organisation phenomena and non-equilibrium criticality with unprecedented experimental access to the underlying microscopic details of the system.

Realization of a Rydberg-dressed Ramsey interferometer and electrometer

We present the experimental realization and characterization of a Ramsey interferometer based on optically trapped ultracold potassium atoms, where one state is continuously coupled by an off-resonant laser field to a highly-excited Rydberg state. We show that the observed interference signals can be used to precisely measure the Rydberg atom-light coupling strength as well as the population and coherence decay rates of the Rydberg-dressed states with sub-kilohertz accuracy and for Rydberg state fractions as small as one part in $10^{6}$. We also demonstrate an application for measuring small, static electric fields with high sensitivity. This provides the means to combine the outstanding coherence properties of Ramsey interferometers based on atomic ground states with a controllable coupling to strongly interacting states, thus expanding the number of systems suitable for metrological applications and many-body physics studies.

Uncovering the non-equilibrium phase structure of an open quantum spin system

We experimentally and theoretically investigate the non-equilibrium phase structure of a well-controlled driven-disspative quantum spin system governed by the interplay of coherent driving, spontaneous decay and long-range spin-spin interactions. We discover that the rate of population loss provides a convenient macroscopic observable that exhibits power-law scaling with the driving strength over several orders of magnitude. The measured scaling exponents reflect the underlying non-equilibrium phase structure of the many-body system, which includes dissipation-dominated, paramagnetic and critical regimes as well as an instability which drives the system towards states with high excitation density. This opens up a new means to study and classify quantum systems out of equilibrium and extends the domain where scale-invariant behavior may be found in nature.

Music and astronomy. II. unitedsoundsofcosmos

We have been congratulated on the stage by a Nobel laureate (he was our curtain raiser), played our music in planetariums, museums, observatories throughout Spain and at the end of the meeting of the ESO telescopes time allocation committee, shocked audiences in rock concerts, written monthly on Musica Universalis, made the second concert in 3D in Spain after Kraftwerk and broadcasted it live in Radio 3, mixed our music with poetry read aloud by scientists, composed the soundtracks of CARMENES, QUIJOTE, ESTRACK and the Gaia first data release, made a videoclip on how computer simulates the formation of stars... All those moments will not be lost in time like tears in rain, but put together in Bilbao during the 2016 meeting of the Spanish Astronomical Society.

Two-body interactions and decay of three-level Rydberg-dressed atoms

We theoretically analyze the interactions and decay rates for atoms dressed by multiple laser fields to strongly interacting Rydberg states using a quantum master equation approach. In this framework a comparison of two-level and three-level Rydberg-dressing schemes is presented. We identify a resonant enhancement of the three-level dressed interaction strength which originates from cooperative multiphoton couplings as well as small distance dependent decay rates. In this regime the soft-core shape of the potential is independent of the sign of the bare Rydberg-Rydberg interaction, while its sign can be repulsive or attractive depending on the intermediate state detuning. As a consequence, near-resonant Rydberg dressing in three-level atomic systems may enable the realization of laser driven quantum fluids with long-range and anisotropic interactions and with controllable dissipation.

Observation of Efimov Resonances in a Mixture with Extreme Mass Imbalance

We observe two consecutive heteronuclear Efimov resonances in an ultracold Li-Cs mixture by measuring three-body loss coefficients as a function of magnetic field near a Feshbach resonance. The first resonance is detected at a scattering length of $a_-^{(1)}=-320(10)~a_0$ corresponding to $\sim 7 $ ($\sim 3$) times the Li-Cs (Cs-Cs) van der Waals range. The second resonance appears at $5.8(1.0) a_-^{(1)}$ close to the unitarity-limited regime at the sample temperature of 450 nK. Indication of a third resonance is found in the atom loss spectra. The scaling of the resonance positions is close to the universal scaling value of 4.9 predicted for zero temperature. Deviations from universality might be caused by finite-range and temperature effects, as well as magnetic field dependent Cs-Cs interactions.

Preparing arbitrary pure states of spatial qudits with a single phase-only spatial light modulator

Spatial qudits are D-dimensional ($D\geq 2$) quantum systems carrying information encoded in the discretized transverse momentum and position of single photons. We present a proof-of-principle demonstration of a method for preparing arbitrary pure states of such systems by using a single phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM). The method relies on the encoding of the complex transmission function corresponding to a given spatial qudit state onto a preset diffraction order of a phase-only grating function addressed at the SLM. Fidelities of preparation above 94% were obtained with this method, which is simpler, less costly, and more efficient than those that require two SLMs for the same purpose.

M-Complete approximate identities in operator spaces

This work introduces the concept of an M-complete approximate identity (M-cai) for a given operator subspace X of an operator space Y. M-cai's generalize central approximate identities in ideals in $C^*$-algebras, for it is proved that if X admits an M-cai in Y, then X is a complete M-ideal in Y. It is proved, using ``special'' M-cai's, that if $\cal J$ is a nuclear ideal in a $C^*$-algebra $\cal A$, then $\cal J$ is completely complemented in Y for any (isomorphically) locally reflexive operator space Y with $\cal J \subset Y \subset \cal A$ and $Y/\cal J$ separable. (This generalizes the previously known special case where $Y=\cal A$, due to Effros-Haagerup.) In turn, this yields a new proof of the Oikhberg-Rosenthal Theorem that $\cal K$ is completely complemented in any separable locally reflexive operator superspace, $\cal K$ the $C^*$-algebra of compact operators on $\ell^2$. M-cai's are also used in obtaining some special affirmative answers to the open problem of whether $\cal K$ is Banach-complemented in $\cal A$ for any separable $C^*$-algebra $\cal A$ with $\cal K\subset\cal A\subset B(\ell^2)$. It is shown that if conversely X is a complete M-ideal in Y, then X admits an M-cai in Y in the following situations: (i) Y has the (Banach) bounded approximation property; (ii) Y is 1-locally reflexive and X is $λ$-nuclear for some $λ\ge1$; (iii) X is a closed 2-sided ideal in an operator algebra Y (via the Effros-Ruan result that then X has a contractive algebraic approximate identity). However it is shown that there exists a separable Banach space X which is an M-ideal in $Y=X^{**}$, yet X admits no M-approximate identity in Y.
