Momentum Spectroscopy of Phase Fluctuations of an Elongated Bose-Einstein Condensate

We have measured the momentum distribution of an elongated BEC (aspect ratio of 152), for temperatures below the critical temperature. The corresponding coherence length is significantly smaller than the condensate length in a wide range of temperature, in quantitative agreement with theoretical predictions. The Lorentzian shape of the momentum spectrum supports the image of a phase fluctuating quasicondensate.

Momentum distribution and correlation function of quasicondensates in elongated traps

We calculate the spatial correlation function and momentum distribution of a phase-fluctuating, elongated three-dimensional condensate, in a trap and in free expansion. We take the inhomogeneous density profile into account {\it{via}} a local density approximation. We find an almost Lorentzian momentum distribution, in stark contrast with a Heisenberg-limited Thomas-Fermi condensate.

Momentum spectroscopy of 1D phase fluctuations in Bose-Einstein condensates

We measure the axial momentum distribution of Bose-Einstein condensates with an aspect ratio of 152 using Bragg spectroscopy. We observe the Lorentzian momentum distribution characteristic of one-dimensional phase fluctuations. The temperature dependence of the width of this distribution provides a quantitative test of quasi-condensate theory. In addition, we observe a condensate length consistent with the absence of density fluctuations, even when phase fluctuations are large.

Phase shifts of atomic de Broglie waves at an evanescent wave mirror

A detailed theoretical investigation of the reflection of an atomic de Broglie wave at an evanescent wave mirror is presented. The classical and the semiclassical descriptions of the reflection process are reviewed, and a full wave-mechanical approach based on the analytical soution of the corresponding Schrödinger equation is presented. The phase shift at reflection is calculated exactly and interpreted in terms of instantaneous reflection of the atom at an effective mirror. Besides the semiclassical regime of reflection describable by the WKB method, a pure quantum regime of reflection is identified in the limit where the incident de Broglie wavelength is large compared to the evanescent wave decay length.

Using ion production to monitor the birth and death of a metastable helium Bose-Einstein condensate

We discuss observations of the ion flux from a cloud of trapped metastable helium atoms. Both Bose-Einstein condensates and thermal clouds were investigated. The ion flux is compared to time-of-flight observations of the expanded cloud. We show data concerning BEC formation and decay, as well as measurements of two- and three-body ionization rate constants. We also discuss possible improvements and extensions of our results.

Resolved diffraction patterns from a reflection grating for atoms

We have studied atomic diffraction at normal incidence from an evanescent standing wave with a high resolution using velocity selective Raman transitions. We have observed up to 3 resolved orders of diffraction, which are well accounted for by a scalar diffraction theory. In our experiment the transverse coherence length of the source is greater than the period of the diffraction grating.

Phase coherence length of a Bose-Einstein condensate

We report on the measurement of the momentum distribution of an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate. A broadening of the distribution with increasing temperature is observed, which is clear evidence for phase fluctuations in the sample.

Ionization rates in a Bose-Einstein condensate of metastable Helium

We have studied ionizing collisions in a BEC of He*. Measurements of the ion production rate combined with measurements of the density and number of atoms for the same sample allow us to estimate both the 2 and 3-body contributions to this rate. A comparison with the decay of the number of condensed atoms in our magnetic trap, in the presence of an rf-shield, indicates that ionizing collisions are largely or wholly responsible for the loss. Quantum depletion makes a substantial correction to the 3-body rate constant.

Specular reflection of matter waves from a rough mirror

We have made a high resolution study of the specularity of the atomic reflection from an evanescent wave mirror using velocity selective Raman transitions. We have observed a double structure in the velocity distribution after reflection: a peak consistent with specular reflection and a diffuse reflection pedestal, whose contribution decreases rapidly with increasing detuning. The diffuse reflection is due to two distinct effects: spontaneous emission in the evanescent wave and a roughness in the evanescent wave potential whose amplitude is smaller than the de Broglie wavelength of the reflected atoms.

Atom laser divergence

We measure the angular divergence of a quasi-continuous, rf-outcoupled, free-falling atom laser as a function of the outcoupling frequency. The data is compared to a Gaussian-beam model of laser propagation that generalizes the standard formalism of photonic lasers. Our treatment includes diffraction, magnetic lensing, and interaction between the atom laser and the condensate. We find that the dominant source of divergence is the condensate-laser interaction.

Bose-Einstein condensation of metastable helium: some experimental aspects

We describe our recent realization of BEC using metastable helium. All detection is done with a micruchannel plate which detects the metastables or ions coming from the trapped atom cloud. This discussion emphasizes some of the diagnostic experiments which were necessary to quantitatively analyse our results.

Thermalization of magnetically trapped metastable helium

We have observed thermalization by elastic collisions of magnetically trapped metastable helium atoms. Our method directly samples the reconstruction of a thermal energy distribution after the application of an RF knife. The relaxation time of our sample towards equilibrium gives an elastic collision rate constant close to the unitarity limit.

Understanding the production of dual BEC with sympathetic cooling

We show, both experimentally and theoretically, that sympathetic cooling of $^{87}$Rb atoms in the $|F=2,m_F=2>$ state by evaporatively cooled atoms in the $|F=1,m_F=-1>$ state can be precisely controlled to produce dual or single condensate in either state. We also study the thermalization rate between two species. Our model renders a quantitative account of the observed role of the overlap between the two clouds and points out that sympathetic cooling becomes inefficient when the masses are very different. Our calculation also yields an analytical expression of the thermalization rate for a single species.

Quasi-continuous atom laser in the presence of gravity

We analyse the extraction of a coherent atomic beam from a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate using a rf transition to a non-trapping state at T=0 K. Our quantum treatment fully takes gravity into account but neglects all interactions in the free falling beam. We obtain an analytical expression of the output rate and of the wave function of the extracted beam, i.e. the output mode of the ``atom laser''. Our model reproduces satisfactorily experimental data without any adjustable parameter.

Multi frequency evaporative cooling to BEC in a high magnetic field

We demonstrate a way to circumvent the interruption of evaporative cooling observed at high bias field for $^{87}$Rb atoms trapped in the (F=2, m=+2) ground state. Our scheme uses a 3-frequencies-RF-knife achieved by mixing two RF frequencies. This compensates part of the non linearity of the Zeeman effect, allowing us to achieve BEC where standard 1-frequency-RF-knife evaporation method did not work. We are able to get efficient evaporative cooling, provided that the residual detuning between the transition and the RF frequencies in our scheme is smaller than the power broadening of the RF transitions at the end of the evaporation ramp.

RF-induced evaporative cooling and BEC in a high magnetic field

We present the design of our iron-core electromagnet for BEC, and how to solve the specific experimental problems raised by this technique. After presenting the experimental set-up, we address the interruption of runaway evaporative cooling when the Zeeman effect is not linear. We present the ways to circumvent this problem, use of multiple RF frequencies, sympathetic cooling and show some applications of these high magnetic fields (cavity coupling, high confinement).

Using atomic interference to probe atom-surface interaction

We show that atomic interference in the reflection from two suitably polarized evanescent waves is sensitive to retardation effects in the atom-surface interaction for specific experimental parameters. We study the limit of short and long atomic de Broglie wavelength. The former case is analyzed in the semiclassical approximation (Landau-Zener model). The latter represents a quantum regime and is analyzed by solving numerically the associated coupled Schroedinger equations. We consider a specific experimental scheme and show the results for rubidium (short wavelength) and the much lighter meta-stable helium atom (long wavelength). The merits of each case are then discussed.
