Possible CP-Violation effects in core-collapse Supernovae

We study CP-violation effects when neutrinos are present in dense matter, such as outside the proto-neutron star formed in a core-collapse supernova. Using general arguments based on the Standard Model, we confirm that there are no CP-violating effects at the tree level on the electron neutrino and anti-neutrino fluxes in a core-collapse supernova. On the other hand significant effects can be obtained for muon and tau neutrinos even at the tree level. We show that CP violating effects can be present in the supernova electron (anti)neutrino fluxes as well, if muon and tau neutrinos have different fluxes at the neutrinosphere. Such differences could arise due to physics beyond the Standard Model, such as the presence of flavor-changing interactions.

Symmetry and Supersymmetry in Nuclear Physics

A survey of algebraic approaches to various problems in nuclear physics is given. Examples are chosen from pairing of many-nucleon systems, nuclear structure, fusion reactions below the Coulomb barrier, and supernova neutrino physics to illustrate the utility of group-theoretical and related algebraic methods in nuclear physics.

Constraints on Unparticles from Low Energy Neutrino-Electron Scattering

We place limits on scalar and vector unparticle couplings to electrons and neutrinos using data from reactor neutrino experiments originally designed to search for neutrino magnetic moment. Upper bounds on Standard Model lepton-scalar unparticle and lepton-vector unparticle couplings $λ_0$, and $λ_1$ are given for various values of the unparticle mass dimension d, and the unparticle energy scale $Λ_{\cal U}$. Especially for smaller values of the mass dimension d (1 <d <1.3) these bounds are very significant and comparable to those obtained from production rates at high energy colliders. These bounds are also similar to those obtained by the analysis of the absence of the decay of the low-energy solar and reactor neutrinos.

Solutions of Nuclear Pairing

We give the exact solution of orbit dependent nuclear pairing problem between two non-degenerate energy levels using the Bethe ansatz technique. Our solution reduces to previously solved cases in the appropriate limits including Richardson's treatment of reduced pairing in terms of rational Gaudin algebra operators.

Low-energy neutrinos at off-axis from a standard beta-beam

We discuss a scenario to extract up to 150 MeV neutrinos at a standard beta-beam facility using one and two detectors off-axis. In particular we show that the high-energy component of the neutrino fluxes can be subtracted through a specific combination of the response of two off-axis detectors. A systematic analysis of the neutrino fluxes using different detector geometries is presented, as well as a comparison with the expected fluxes at a low-energy beta-beam facility. The presented option could offer an alternative way to perform low-energy neutrino experiments.

Supersymmetry and Nuclear Pairing

We show that nuclear pairing Hamiltonian exhibits supersymmetry in the strong-coupling limit. The underlying supersymmetric quantum mechanical structure explains the degeneracies between the energies of the N and Nmax-N+1 pair eigenstates. The supersymmetry transformations connecting these states are given.

Spectra and Symmetry in Nuclear Pairing

We apply the algebraic Bethe ansatz technique to the nuclear pairing problem with orbit dependent coupling constants and degenerate single particle energy levels. We find the exact energies and eigenstates. We show that for a given shell, there are degeneracies between the states corresponding to less and more than half full shell. We also provide a technique to solve the equations of Bethe ansatz.

Neutrino-Neutrino Interactions and Flavor Mixing in Dense Matter

An algebraic approach to the neutrino propagation in dense media is presented. The Hamiltonian describing a gas of neutrinos interacting with each other and with background fermions is written in terms of the appropriate SU(N) operators, where N is the number of neutrino flavors. The evolution of the resulting many-body problem is formulated as a coherent-state path integral. Some commonly used approximations are shown to represent the saddle-point solution of the path integral for the full many-body system.

Effect of electronic environment on neutrino-nucleus reactions at r-process sites

We discuss effects of the electron plasma on charged-current neutrino-nucleus reaction, $(ν_e,e^-)$ in a core-collapse supernova environment. We first discuss the electron screening effect on the final state interaction between the outgoing electron and the daughter nucleus. To this end, we solve the Dirac equation for the outgoing electron with the screened Coulomb potential obtained with the Thomas-Fermi approximation. In addition to the screening effect, we also discuss the Pauli blocking effect due to the environmental electrons on the spectrum of the outgoing electron. We find that both effects hinder the cross section of the charged-current reaction, especially at low incident energies.

Neutrinos, Weak Interactions, and r-process Nucleosynthesis

Two of the key issues in understanding the neutron-to-proton ratio in a core-collapse supernova are discussed. One of these is the behavior of the neutrino-nucleon cross sections as supernova energies. The other issue is the many-body properties of the neutrino gas near the core when both one- and two-body interaction terms are included.

A Conserved Vector Current test using low energy beta-beams

We discuss the possibility of testing the weak currents and, in particular, the weak magnetism term through the measurement of the electron anti-neutrinos capture by protons at a low energy beta-beam facility. We analyze the sensitivity using both the total number of events and the angular distribution of the positrons emitted in a water Cerenkov detector. We show that the weak magnetism form factor might be determined with better than several percent accuracy using the angular distribution. This offers a new way of testing the Conserved Vector Current hypothesis.

Neutrino Magnetic Moment

Current experimental and observational limits on the neutrino magnetic moment are reviewed. Implications of the recent results from the solar and reactor neutrino experiments for the value of the neutrino magnetic moment are discussed. It is shown that spin-flavor precession in the Sun is suppressed.

Electroweak Tests at Beta-beams

We explore the possibility of measuring the Weinberg angle from (anti)neutrino-electron scattering using low energy beta beams, a method that produces single flavour neutrino beams from the beta-decay of boosted radioactive ions. We study how the sensitivity of a possible measurement depends on the intensity of the ion beam and on a combination of different Lorentz boosts of the ions.

Supernova Neutrino-Effects on R-Process Nucleosynthesis in Black Hole Formation

Stars with a wide range of masses provide a variety of production sites for intermediate-to-heavy mass elements. Very massive stars with mass $\geq 8 M_{\odot}$ culminate their evolution by supernova explosions which are presumed to be the most viable candidate astrophysical sites of r-process nucleosynthesis. If the models for the supernova r-process are correct, then nucleosynthesis results could also pose a significant constraint on the remnant of supernova explosions, $i.e.$ neutron star or black hole. In the case of very massive core collapse, a remnant stellar black hole is thought to be formed. Intense neutrino flux from the neutronized core and the neutrino sphere might suddenly cease during the Kelvin-Helmholtz cooling phase because of the black hole formation. It is interesting to explore observable consequences of such a neutrino flux truncation. Arguments have recently been given in the literature that even the neutrino mass may be determined from the time delay of deformed neutrino energy spectrum after the cease of neutrino ejection (neutrino cutoff effect). Here, we study the expected theoretical response of the r-process nucleosynthesis to the neutrino cutoff effect in order to look for another independent signature of this phenomenon. We found a sensitive response of the r-process yield if the neutrino cutoff occurs after the critical time when the expanding materials in the neutrino-driven wind drop out of the Nuclear Statistical Equilibrium (NSE). The r-process nucleosynthesis yields change maximally if the cutoff occurs during the r-process. Using this result, connected with future detection of the time-variation of SN neutrino spectrum, we are able to identify when the black hole formation occurs in the course of SN collapse.

Does the neutrino magnetic moment have an impact on solar neutrino physics?

Solar neutrino observations coupled with the recent KamLAND data suggest that spin-flavor precession scenario does not play a major role in neutrino propagation in the solar matter. We provide approximate analytical formulas and numerical results to estimate the contribution of the spin-flavor precession, if any, to the electron neutrino survival probability when the magnetic moment and magnetic field combination is small.

Solutions of the Gaudin Equation and Gaudin Algebras

Three well-known solutions of the Gaudin equation are obtained under a set of standard assumptions. By relaxing one of these assumptions we introduce a class of mutually commuting Hamiltonians based on a different solution of the Gaudin equation. Application of the algebraic Bethe ansatz technique to diagonalize these Hamiltonians reveals a new infinite dimensional complex Lie algebra.
