Coupled multiferroic domain switching in the canted conical spin spiral system Mn$_{2}$GeO$_{4}$

Despite remarkable progress in developing multifunctional materials, spin-driven ferroelectrics featuring both spontaneous magnetization and electric polarization are still rare. Among such ferromagnetic ferroelectrics are conical spin spiral magnets with a simultaneous reversal of magnetization and electric polarization that is still little understood. Such materials can feature various multiferroic domains that complicates their study. Here we study the multiferroic domains in ferromagnetic ferroelectric Mn$_{2}$GeO$_{4}$ using neutron diffraction, and show that it features a double-Q conical magnetic structure that, apart from trivial 180 degree commensurate magnetic domains, can be described by ferromagnetic and ferroelectric domains only. We show unconventional magnetoelectric couplings such as the magnetic-field-driven reversal of ferroelectric polarization with no change of spin-helicity, and present a phenomenological theory that successfully explains the magnetoelectric coupling. Our measurements establish Mn$_{2}$GeO$_{4}$ as a conceptually simple multiferroic in which the magnetic-field-driven flop of conical spin spirals leads to the simultaneous reversal of magnetization and electric polarization.

Spin Dynamics of Trimers on a Distorted Kagomé Lattice

We treat the ground state, elementary excitations, and neutron scattering cross section for a system of trimers consisting of three tightly bound spins 1/2 on a distorted Kagomé lattice, subject to isotropic nearest neighbor (usually antiferromagnetic) Heisenberg interactions. The interactions between trimers are assumed to be weak compared to the intra trimer interactions. We compare the spin-wave excitation spectrum of trimers with that obtained from standard spin-wave theory and attribute the differences at low energy to the fact that the trimer formulation includes exactly the effects of intra-trimer zero point motion. Application to existing systems is briefly discussed.

Symmetry Analysis of Multiferroic Co_3TeO_6

A phenomenological explanation of the magnetoelectric behavior of Co_3TeO_6 is developed. We explain the second harmonic generation data and the magnetic field induced spontaneous polarization in the magnetically ordered phase below 20K.

Landau Theory of Tilting of Oxygen Octahedra in Perovskites

The list of possible commensurate phases obtained from the parent tetragonal phase of Ruddlesden-Popper systems, A$_{n+1}$B$_n$C$_{3n+1}$ for general $n$ due to a single phase transition involving the reorienting of octahedra of C (oxygen) ions is reexamined using a Landau expansion. This expansion allows for the nonlinearity of the octahedral rotations and the rotation-strain coupling. It is found that most structures allowed by symmetry are inconsistent with the constraint of rigid octahedra which dictates the form of the quartic terms in the Landau free energy. For A$_2$BC$_4$ our analysis allows only 10 (see Table III) of the 41 structures listed by Hatch {\it et al.} which are allowed by general symmetry arguments. The symmetry of rotations for RP systems with $n>2$ is clarified. Our list of possible structures in Table VII excludes many structures allowed in previous studies.

Phonons and their Coupling to Magnons in n=2 Ruddlesden-Popper Compounds

The number of absorption and Raman optical modes for each Wyckoff orbit in the high-temperature tetragonal (I4/mmm) parent lattice of the Ruddlesden-Popper compounds Ca$_3$X$_2$O$_7$, with X=Mn or X=Ti is given. We analyze the effect of sequential perturbations which lower the symmetry to Cmcm and Cmc2$_1$ and finally include magnetic ordering. We determine the power law behavior (within mean field theory) for the cross section for photon absorption and Raman scattering of modes which appear as the symmetry is successively lowered. In the Cmc2$_1$ phase we give a symmetry analysis to discuss the magnon-phonon coupling which in other systems gives rise to "electromagnons." From our results we suggest several experiments to clarify the phase diagram and other properties of these systems.

Symmetry Analysis for the Ruddlesden-Popper Systems, Ca3Mn2O7 and Ca3Ti2O7

We perform a symmetry analysis of the zero-temperature instabilities of the tetragonal phase of Ca3Mn2O7 and Ca3Ti2O7 which is stable at high temperature. We introduce order parameters to characterize each of the possible lattice distortions in order to construct a Landau free energy which elucidates the proposed group-subgroup relations for structural transitions in these systems. We include the coupling between the unstable distortion modes and the macroscopic strain tensor. We also analyze the symmetry of the dominantly antiferromagnetic ordering which allows weak ferromagnetism. We show that in this phase the weak ferromagnetic moment and the spontaneous ferroelectric polarization are coupled, so that rotating one of these ordering by applying an external electric or magnetic field one can rotate the other ordering. We discuss the number of different domains (including phase domains) which exist in each of the phases and indicate how these may be observed.

Classifying Possible Tilting of Oxygen Octahedra in Perovskites

The list of possible commensurate phases obtained from the parent tetragonal phase of perovskites by allowing the tilting of octahedra of oxygen ions is reexamined. It is found that many structures allowed by symmetry are not consistent with the constraint of very rigid octahedra.

A System Exhibiting Toroidal Order

A two dimensional system of discs upon which a triangle of spins are mounted is shown to undergo a sequence of interesting phase transitions as the temperature is lowered. We are mainly concerned with the `solid' phase in which bond orientational order but not positional order is long ranged. As the temperature is lowered in the `solid' phase, the first phase transition involving the orientation or toroidal charge of the discs is into a `gauge toroid' phase in which the product of a magnetic toroidal parameter and an orientation variable (for the discs) orders but due to a local gauge symmetry these variables themselves do not individually order. Finally, in the lowest temperature phase the gauge symmetry is broken and toroidal order and orientational order both develop. In the `gauge toroidal' phase time reversal invariance is broken and in the lowest temperature phase inversion symmetry is also broken. In none of these phases is there long range order in any Fourier component of the average spin. A definition of the toroidal magnetic moment $T_i$ of the $i$th plaquette is proposed such that the magnetostatic interaction between plaquettes $i$ and $j$ is proportional to $T_iT_j$. Symmetry considerations are used to construct the magnetoelectric free energy and thereby to deduce which coefficients of the linear magnetoelectric tensor are allowed to be nonzero. In none of the phases does symmetry permit a spontaneous polarization.

Magnetic structure and magnetoelectric coupling in bulk and thin film FeVO$_4$

We have investigated the magnetoelectric and magnetodielectric response in FeVO$_4$, which exhibits a change in magnetic structure coincident with ferroelectric ordering at $T_{N2}$$\approx$15 K. Using symmetry considerations, we construct a model for the possible magnetoelectric coupling in this system, and present a discussion of the allowed spin structures in FeVO$_4$. Based on this model, in which the spontaneous polarization is caused by a trilinear spin-phonon interaction, we experimentally explore the magnetoelectric coupling in FeVO$_4$ thin films through measurements of the electric field induced shift of the multiferroic phase transition temperature, which exhibits an increase of 0.25 K in an applied field of 4 MV/m. The strong spin-charge coupling in \fvo\, is also reflected in the significant magnetodielectric shift, which is present in the paramagnetic phase due to a quartic spin-phonon interaction and shows a marked enhancement with the onset of magnetic order which we attribute to the trilinear spin-phonon interaction. We observe a clear magnetic field induced dielectric anomaly at lower temperatures, distinct from the sharp peak associated with the multiferroic transition, which we tentatively assign to a spin reorientation cross-over. We also present a magnetoelectric phase diagram for FeVO$_4$.

Charge and Spin Ordering in the Mixed Valence Compound LuFe2O4

Landau theory and symmetry considerations lead us to propose an explanation for several seemingly paradoxical behaviors of charge ordering (CO) and spin ordering (SO) in the mixed valence compound LuFe2O4. Both SO and CO are highly frustrated. We analyze a lattice gas model of CO within mean field theory and determine the magnitude of several of the phenomenological interactions. We show that the assumption of a continuous phase transition at which CO or SO develops implies that both CO and SO are incommensurate. To explain how ferroelectric fluctuations in the charge disordered phase can be consistent with an antiferroelectric ordered phase, we invoke an electron-phonon interaction in which a low energy (20meV) zone-center transverse phonon plays a key role. The energies of all the zone-center phonons are calculated from first principles. We give a Landau analysis which explains SO and we discuss a model of interactions which stabilizes the SO state, if it is assumed commensurate. However, we suggest a high resolution experimental determination to see whether this phase is really commensurate, as believed up to now. The applicability of representation analysis is discussed. A tentative explanation for the sensitivity of the CO state to an applied magnetic field in field-cooled experiments is given.

Possible Orientationally Ordered States of Bucky-Cubane

For temperatures above $T^*=130$K C$_{60} \cdot$C$_8$H$_8$ forms a cubic crystal consisting of two interpenetrating fcc sublattices, one of freely rotating Buckys C$_{60}$ and the other of orientationally ordered cubane C$_8$H$_8$. The crystal structure below a discontinuous transition is found to be orthorhombic, but the nature of the ordering of the Buckys has not yet been determined. Here possible orderings of the Buckys consistent with the size and symmetry of the orthorhombic unit cell are analyzed. Most likely inversion symmetry is preserved at the transition, in which case the small number of possible orderings are described. If inversion symmetry is removed, the point group can be C$_{2v}$ which supports ferroelectricity or D$_2$ which can be confirmed by proton NMR measurements.

Evidence for large electric polarization from collinear magnetism in TmMnO3

There has been tremendous research activity in the field of magneto-electric (ME) multiferroics after Kimura et al. [1] showed that antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric order coexist in orthorhom- bically distorted perovskite TbMnO3 and are strongly coupled. It is now generally accepted that ferroelectricity in TbMnO3 is induced by magnetic long range order that breaks the symmetry of the crystal and creates a polar axis [2]. One remaining key question is whether magnetic order can induce ferroelectric polarization that is as large as that of technologically useful materials. We show that ferroelectricity in orthorhombic (o) TmMnO3 is induced by collinear magnetic order, and that the lower limit for its electric polarization is larger than in previously investigated orthorhombic heavy rare-earth manganites. The temperature dependence of the lattice constants provides fur- ther evidence of large spin-lattice coupling effects. Our experiments suggest that the ferroelectric polarization in the orthorhombic perovskites with commensurate magnetic ground states could pass the 1 microC/cm2 threshold, as suggested by theory [3, 4].

Charge and Spin Ordering in the Mixed Valence Compound LuFe2O4

Landau theory and symmetry considerations are invoked to give a unified treatment of charge and spin ordering in the mixed valence compound LuFe2O4. In particular, the unusual evolution of charge ordering correlations can be explained by invoking phonon mediated interactions.

Order Parameters and Phase Diagram of Multiferroic RMn$_2$O$_5$

The generic magnetic phase diagram of multiferroic RMn$_2$O$_5$ (with R=Y, Ho, Tb, Er, Tm), which allows different sequences of ordered magnetic structures for different R's and different control parameters, is described using order parameters which explicitly incorporate the magnetic symmetry. A phenomenological magneto-electric coupling is used to explain why some of these magnetic phases are also ferroelectric. Several new experiments, which can test this theory, are proposed.

Effect of Inversion Symmetry on Incommensurate Order in Multiferroic RMn2O5, R=rare earth

Starting from the irreducible representations of the group of the wave vector we construct the spin wave functions consistent with inversion symmetry, neglected in the usual representation analysis. We obtain the relation between the basis functions of different members of the star of the wave vector. We introduce order parameters and determine their transformation properties under the operations of the space group of the paramagnetic crystal. The results are applied to construct terms in the magnetoelectric interaction which are quadratic and quartic in the magnetic order parameters. The higher order magnetoelectric interactions can in principle induce components of the spontaneous polarization which are not allowed by the lowest order magnetoelectric interaction. We also obtain the relation between the spin wave functions of the incommensurate phase and those of the commensurate phase which lead to analogous relations between the order parameters of these two phases.
