Coulomb blockade anisotropic magnetoresistance: Singleelectronics meets spintronics

Single-electronics and spintronics are among the most intensively investigated potential complements or alternatives to CMOS electronics. Single-electronics, which is based on the discrete charge of the electron, is the ultimate in miniaturization and electro-sensitivity. Spintronics, which is based on manipulating electron spins, delivers high magneto-sensitivity and non-volatile memory effects. So far, major developments in the two fields have followed independent paths with only a few experimental studies of hybrid single-electronic/spintronic devices. Intriguing new effects have been discovered in such devices but these have not, until now, offered the possibility of useful new functionalities. Here we demonstrate a device which shows a new physical effect, Coulomb blockade anisotropic magnetoresistance, and which offers a route to non-volatile, low-field, and highly electro- and magneto-sensitive operation. Since this new phenomenon reflects the magnetization orientation dependence of the classical single-electron charging energy it does not impose constraints on the operational temperature associated with more subtle quantum effects, such as resonant or spin-coherent tunneling.

Prospect for room temperature tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance effect: density of states anisotropies in CoPt systems

Tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR) effect, discovered recently in (Ga,Mn)As ferromagnetic semiconductors, arises from spin-orbit coupling and reflects the dependence of the tunneling density of states in a ferromagnetic layer on orientation of the magnetic moment. Based on ab initio relativistic calculations of the anisotropy in the density of states we predict sizable TAMR effects in room-temperature metallic ferromagnets. This opens prospect for new spintronic devices with a simpler geometry as these do not require antiferromagnetically coupled contacts on either side of the tunnel junction. We focus on several model systems ranging from simple hcp-Co to more complex ferromagnetic structures with enhanced spin-orbit coupling, namely bulk and thin film L1$_0$-CoPt ordered alloys and a monatomic-Co chain at a Pt surface step edge. Reliability of the predicted density of states anisotropies is confirmed by comparing quantitatively our ab initio results for the magnetocrystalline anisotropies in these systems with experimental data.

Nature of non-magnetic strongly-correlated state in delta-plutonium

Ab-initio relativistic dynamical mean-field theory is applied to resolve the long-standing controversy between theory and experiment in the "simple" face-centered cubic phase of plutonium called delta-Pu. In agreement with experiment, neither static nor dynamical magnetic moments are predicted. In addition, the quasiparticle density of states reproduces not only the peak close to the Fermi level, which explains the large coefficient of electronic specific heat, but also main 5f features observed in photoelectron spectroscopy.

Magnetism, Spin-Orbit Coupling, and Superconducting Pairing in UGe$_2$

A consistent picture on the mean-field level of the magnetic properties and electronic structure of the superconducting itinerant ferromagnet UGe$_2$ is shown to require inclusion of correlation effects beyond the local density approximation (LDA). The "LDA+U" approach reproduces both the magnitude of the observed moment, composed of strongly opposing spin and orbital parts, and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The largest Fermi surface sheet is comprised primarily of spin majority states with orbital projection $m_{\ell}$=0, suggesting a much simpler picture of the pairing than is possible for general strong spin-orbit coupled materials. This occurrence, and the quasi-two-dimensional geometry of the Fermi surface, support the likelihood of magnetically mediated p-wave triplet pairing.

Ground and Metastable States in $γ$-Ce from Correlated Band Theory

Multiple energy minima of the LDA+U energy functional are obtained for $γ$-Ce when it is implemented in a full potential, rotationally invariant scheme including spin-orbit coupling, and different starting local configurations are chosen. The lowest energy solution leads to a fully spin polarized 4f state and the lattice constant of $γ$-Ce. The higher energy local minima (additional self-consistent solutions) are shown to be strongly indicative of crystal electric field and multiplet excitations.

Superconductivity in Ferromagnetic RuSr2GdCu2O8

Relying on the inhomogeneous (layered) crystal, electronic, and magnetic structure, we show how superconductivity can coexist with the ferromagnetic phase of RuSr2GdCu2O8 as observed by Tallon and coworkers. Since the Cu d_{x^2-y^2} orbitals couple only to apical O p_x, p_y orbitals (and only weakly), which also couple only weakly to the magnetic Ru t_{2g} orbitals, there is sufficiently weak exchange splitting, especially of the symmetric CuO2 bilayer Fermi surface, to allow singlet pairing. The exchange splitting is calculated to be large enough that the superconducting order parameter may be of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov type. We also note that π-phase formation is preferred by the magnetic characteristics of RuSr2GdCu2O8.

Electron correlation effects and magnetic ordering at the Gd(0001) surface

Effects of electron correlation on the electronic structure and magnetic properties of the Gd(0001) surface are investigated using of the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave implementation of correlated band theory ("LDA+U"). The use of LDA+U instead of LDA (local density approximation) total energy calculations produces the correct ferromagnetic ground state for both bulk Gd and the Gd surface. Surface strain relaxation leads to an 90 % enhancement of the interlayer surface-to-bulk effective exchange coupling. Application of a Landau-Ginzburg type theory yields a 30 % enhancement of the Curie temperature at the surface, in very good agreement with the experiment.

Magnetoelastic mechanism of spin-reorientation transitions at step-edges

The symmetry-induced magnetic anisotropy due to monoatomic steps at strained Ni films is determined using results of first - principles relativistic full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) calculations and an analogy with the Néel model. We show that there is a magnetoelastic anisotropy contribution to the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy in the vicinal plane of a stepped surface. In addition to the known spin-direction reorientation transition at a flat Ni/Cu(001) surface, we propose a spin-direction reorientation transition in the vicinal plane for a stepped Ni/Cu surface due to the magnetoelastic anisotropy. We show that with an increase of Ni film thickness, the magnetization in the vicinal plane turns perpendicular to the step edge at a critical thickness calculated to be in the range of 16-24 Ni layers for the Ni/Cu(1,1,13) stepped surface.

On the Coexistence in RuSr2GdCu2O8 of Superconductivity and Ferromagnetism

We review the reasons that make superconductivity unlikely to arise in a ferromagnet. Then, in light of the report by Tallon and collaborators that RuSr2GdCu2O8 becomes superconducting at approximately 35 K which is well below the Curie temperature of 132 K, we consider whether the objections really apply to this compound. Our considerations are supported by local spin density calculations for this compound, which indeed indicate a ferromagnetic RuO2 layer. The Ru moment resides in t_2g orbitals but is characteristic of itinerant magnetism (and is sensitive to choice of exchange-correlation potential and to the atomic positions). Based on the small exchange splitting that is induced in the Cu-O layers, the system seems capable of supporting singlet superconductivity an FFLO-type order parameter and possibly a pi-phase alternation between layers. If instead the pairing is triplet in the RuO2 layers, it can be distinguished by a spin-polarized supercurrent. Either type of superconductivity seems to imply a spontaneous vortex phase if the magnetization is rotated out of the plane.

First principles calculation of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and magnetostriction in strained CMR films

We performed first - principles relativistic full-potential linearized augmented plane wave calculations for strained tetragonal ferromagnetic La(Ba)MnO$_3$ with an assumed experimental structure of thin strained tetragonal La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO) films grown on SrTiO$_3$[001] and LaAlO$_3$[001] substrates. The calculated uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) values, are in good quantitative agreement with experiment for LCMO films on SrTiO$_3$ substrate. We also analyze the applicability of linear magnetoelastic theory for describing the stain dependence of MAE, and estimate magnetostriction coefficient $λ_{001}$.

Implementation of the LDA+U method using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave basis

We provide a straightforward and efficient procedure to combine LDA+U total energy functional with the full potential linearized augmented plane wave method. A detailed derivation of the LDA+U Kohn-Sham type equations is presented for the augmented plane wave basis set, and a simple ``second-variation'' based procedure for self-consistent LDA+U calculations is given. The method is applied to calculate electronic structure and magnetic properties of NiO and Gd. The magnetic moments and band eigenvalues obtained are in very good quantitative agreement with previous full potential LMTO calculations. We point out that LDA+U reduces the total d charge on Ni by 0.1 in NiO.
