Quantum nature of a strongly-coupled single quantum dot-cavity system

Cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) studies the interaction between a quantum emitter and a single radiation-field mode. When an atom is in strong coupling with a cavity mode1,2, it is possible to realize key quantum information processing (QIP) tasks, such as controlled coherent coupling and entanglement of distinguishable quantum systems. Realizing these tasks in the solid state is clearly desirable, and coupling semiconductor self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) to monolithic optical cavities is a promising route to this end. However, validating the efficacy of QDs in QIP applications requires confirmation of the quantum nature of the QD-cavity system in the strong coupling regime. Here we find a confirmation by observing quantum correlations in photoluminescence (PL) from a photonic crystal (PC) nanocavity3-5 interacting with one, and only one, QD located precisely at the cavity electric field maximum. When off-resonance, photon emission from the cavity mode and QD excitons is anti-correlated at the level of single quanta, proving that the mode is driven solely by the QD despite an energy mis-match between cavity and excitons. When tuned into resonance, the exciton and photon enter the strong-coupling regime of cavity-QED and the QD lifetime reduces by a factor of 120. The photon stream from the cavity becomes anti-bunched, proving that the coupled exciton/photon system is in the quantum anharmonic regime. Our observations unequivocally show that QIP tasks requiring the quantum nonlinear regime are achievable in the solid state.

Nonlinear dynamics of quantum dot nuclear spins

We report manifestly nonlinear dependence of quantum dot nuclear spin polarization on applied magnetic fields. Resonant absorption and emission of circularly polarized radiation pumps the resident quantum dot electron spin, which in turn leads to nuclear spin polarization due to hyperfine interaction. We observe that the resulting Overhauser field exhibits hysteresis as a function of the external magnetic field. This hysteresis is a consequence of the feedback of the Overhauser field on the nuclear spin cooling rate. A semi-classical model describing the coupled nuclear and electron spin dynamics successfully explains the observed hysteresis but leaves open questions for the low field behaviour of the nuclear spin polarization.

Manipulating exciton fine-structure in quantum dots with a lateral electric field

The fine structure of the neutral exciton in a single self assembled InGaAs quantum dot is investigated under the effect of a lateral electric field. Stark shifts up to 1.5 meV, an increase in linewidth, and a decrease in photoluminescence intensity were observed due to the electric field. We show that the lateral electric field strongly affects the exciton fine structure splitting due to active manipulation of the single particle wave-functions. Remarkably, the splitting can be tuned over large values and through zero.

Knight Field Enabled Nuclear Spin Polarization in Single Quantum Dots

We demonstrate dynamical nuclear spin polarization in the absence of an external magnetic field, by resonant circularly polarized optical excitation of a single electron or hole charged quantum dot. Optical pumping of the electron spin induces an effective inhomogeneous magnetic (Knight) field that determines the direction along which nuclear spins could polarize and enables nuclear-spin cooling by suppressing depolarization induced by nuclear dipole-dipole interactions. Our observations suggest a new mechanism for spin-polarization where spin exchange with an electron reservoir plays a crucial role. These experiments constitute a first step towards quantum measurement of the Overhauser field.

Self-tuned quantum dot gain in photonic crystal lasers

We demonstrate that very few (1 to 3) quantum dots as a gain medium are sufficient to realize a photonic crystal laser based on a high-quality nanocavity. Photon correlation measurements show a transition from a thermal to a coherent light state proving that lasing action occurs at ultra-low thresholds. Observation of lasing is unexpected since the cavity mode is in general not resonant with the discrete quantum dot states and emission at those frequencies is suppressed. In this situation, the quasi-continuous quantum dot states become crucial since they provide an energy-transfer channel into the lasing mode, effectively leading to a self-tuned resonance for the gain medium.

Spin-selective optical absorption of singly charged excitons in a quantum dot

We investigate high resolution laser absorption spectroscopy of a single InGaAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dot embedded in a field-effect structure. We show experimentally that the interband optical absorption to the lower Zeeman branch of the singly charged exciton is strongly inhibited due to spin (Pauli) blockade of the optical transition. At high magnetic fields the optical absorption to the upper Zeeman branch dominates the absorption spectrum. We find however that the spin blockade is not complete and a 10% leakage remains at high magnetic fields. Applying a gate voltage to empty the dot of its resident electron turns off the spin blockade. This effect is observed at 1.5 K and up to 9 Tesla.

Giant optical anisotropy in a single InAs quantum dot in a very dilute quantum-dot ensemble

We present the experimental evidence of giant optical anisotropy in single InAs quantum dots. Polarization-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy reveals a linear polarization ratio with huge fluctuations, from one quantum dot to another, in sign and in magnitude with absolute values up to 82%. Systematic measurements on hundreds of quantum dots coming from two different laboratories demonstrate that the giant optical anisotropy is an intrinsic feature of dilute quantum-dot arrays.
