Oscillatory surface dichroism of an insulating topological insulator Bi2Te2Se

Using circular dichroism-angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (CD-ARPES), we report a study of the effect of angular momentum transfer between polarized photons and topological surface states on the surface of highly bulk insulating topological insulator Bi2Te2Se. The photoelectron dichroism is found to be strongly modulated by the frequency of the helical photons including a dramatic sign-flip. Our results suggest that the observed dichroism and its sign-flip are consequences of strong coupling between the photon field and the spin-orbit nature of the Dirac modes on the surface. Our studies reveal the intrinsic dichroic behavior of topological surface states and point toward the potential utility of bulk insulating topological insulators in device applications.

Tunneling Tuned Spin Modulations in Ultrathin Topological Insulator Films

Quantitative understanding of the relationship between quantum tunneling and Fermi surface spin polarization is key to device design using topological insulator surface states. By using spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with p-polarized light in topological insulator Bi2Se3 thin films across the metal-to-insulator transition, we observe that for a given film thickness, the spin polarization is large for momenta far from the center of the surface Brillouin zone. In addition, the polarization decreases significantly with enhanced tunneling realized systematically in thin insulating films, whereas magnitude of the polarization saturates to the bulk limit faster at larger wavevectors in thicker metallic films. Our theoretical model calculations capture this delicate relationship between quantum tunneling and Fermi surface spin polarization. Our results suggest that the polarization current can be tuned to zero in thin insulating films forming the basis for a future spin-switch nano-device.

Surface electronic structure of a topological Kondo insulator candidate SmB6: insights from high-resolution ARPES

The Kondo insulator SmB6 has long been known to exhibit low temperature (T < 10K) transport anomaly and has recently attracted attention as a new topological insulator candidate. By combining low-temperature and high energy-momentum resolution of the laser-based ARPES technique, for the first time, we probe the surface electronic structure of the anomalous conductivity regime. We observe that the bulk bands exhibit a Kondo gap of 14 meV and identify in-gap low-lying states within a 4 meV window of the Fermi level on the (001)-surface of this material. The low-lying states are found to form electron-like Fermi surface pockets that enclose the X and the Gamma points of the surface Brillouin zone. These states disappear as temperature is raised above 15K in correspondence with the complete disappearance of the 2D conductivity channels in SmB6. While the topological nature of the in-gap metallic states cannot be ascertained without spin (spin-texture) measurements our bulk and surface measurements carried out in the transport-anomaly-temperature regime (T < 10K) are consistent with the first-principle predicted Fermi surface behavior of a topological Kondo insulator phase in this material.

Non-trivial spin-texture of the coaxial Dirac cones on the surface of topological crystalline insulator SnTe

We present first principles calculations of the nontrivial surface states and their spin-textures in the topological crystalline insulator SnTe. The surface state dispersion on the [001] surface exhibits four Dirac-cones centered along the intersection of the mirror plane and the surface plane. We propose a simple model of two interacting coaxial Dirac cones to describe both the surface state dispersion and the associated spin-texture. While the out-of-the-plane spin polarization is zero due to the crystalline and time-reversal symmetries, the in-plane spin texture shows helicity with some distortion due to the interaction of the two coaxial Dirac cones, indicating a nontrivial mirror Chern number of -2, distinct from the value of -1 in $Z_{2}$ topological insulator such as Bi/Sb alloys or Bi$_2$Se$_3$. The surface state dispersion and its spin-texture would provide an experimentally accessible way to determine the nontrivial mirror Chern number.

Effects of excess or deficiency of oxygen content on the electronic structure of high-$T_C$ cuprates

Band structure calculations are presented for large supercells of Ba$_2$CuO$_4$ (BCO) with O-vacancies in planar or apic al positions, and of superoxygenated La$_2$CuO$_4$ (LCO) with oxygen interstitials in the La$_2$O$_2$ layers. It is foun d that apical oxygen vacancies in BCO act as electron dopants and makes the electronic structure similar to that of hole doped LCO. Excess oxygen interstitials forming wires in the La$_2$O$_2$ layers of LCO are shown to yield a much larger density-of-states at the Fermi energy than for the stoichiometric compound related with a segmentation of the Fermi surface. Anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations are strengthened by O-vacancies in BCO as well as by oxygen interstitials in LCO, but are strongly suppressed in O-deficient LCO. Our results indicate the complexity of doping by O-vacancies, and by ordered defects that are a significant factor contr olling the electronic properties of cuprates.

Reversal of the circular dichroism in the angle-resolved photoemission from Bi2Te3

The helical Dirac fermions at the surface of topological insulators show a strong circular dichroism which has been explained as being due to either the initial-state spin angular momentum, the initial-state orbital angular momentum, or the handedness of the experimental setup. All of these interpretations conflict with our data from Bi2Te3 which depend on the photon energy and show several sign changes. Our one-step photoemission calculations coupled to ab initio theory confirm the sign change and assign the dichroism to a final-state effect. The spin polarization of the photoelectrons, instead, remains a reliable probe for the spin in the initial state.

Gated Silicene as a tunable source of nearly 100% spin-polarized electrons

Silicene is a one-atom-thick 2D crystal of silicon with a hexagonal lattice structure that is related to that of graphene but with atomic bonds that are buckled rather than flat. This buckling confers advantages on silicene over graphene, because it should, in principle, generate both a band gap and polarized spin-states that can be controlled with a perpendicular electric field. Here we use first-principles calculations to show that field-gated silicene possesses two gapped Dirac cones exhibiting nearly 100% spin-polarization, situated at the corners of the Brillouin zone. Using this fact, we propose a design for a silicene-based spin-filter that should enable the spin-polarization of an output current to be switched electrically, without switching external magnetic fields. Our quantum transport calculations indicate that the proposed designs will be highly efficient (nearly 100% spin polarization) and robust against weak disorder and edge imperfections. We also propose a Y-shaped spin/valley separator that produces spin-polarized current at two output terminals with opposite spins.

Adiabatic transformation as a search tool for new topological insulators: distorted ternary Li$_2$AgSb-class semiconductors and related compounds

We demonstrate that first-principles based adiabatic continuation approach is a very powerful and efficient tool for constructing topological phase diagrams and locating non-trivial topological insulator materials. Using this technique, we predict that the ternary intermetallic series Li$_2M'X$ where $M'$=Cu, Ag, Au, or Cd, and $X$=Sb, Bi, or Sn, hosts a number of topological insulators with remarkable functional variants and tunability. We also predict that several III-V semimetallic compounds are topologically non-trivial. We construct a topological phase diagram in the parameter space of the atomic numbers of atoms in Li$_2M'X$ compounds, which places a large number of topological materials presented in this work as well as in earlier studies within a single unified topological framework. Our results demonstrate the efficacy of adiabatic continuation as a useful tool for exploring topologically nontrivial alloying systems and for identifying new topological insulators even when the underlying lattice does not possess inversion symmetry, and the approaches based on parity analysis are not viable.

Topological Surface States and Dirac point tuning in ternary Bi2Te2Se class of topological insulators

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we report electronic structure for representative members of ternary topological insulators. We show that several members of this family, such as Bi2Se2Te, Bi2Te2Se, and GeBi2Te4, exhibit a singly degenerate Dirac-like surface state, while Bi2Se2S is a fully gapped insulator with no measurable surface state. One of these compounds, Bi2Se2Te, shows tunable surface state dispersion upon its electronic alloying with Sb (SbxBi2-xSe2Te series). Other members of the ternary family such as GeBi2Te4 and BiTe1.5S1.5 show an in-gap surface Dirac point, the former of which has been predicted to show nonzero weak topological invariants such as (1;111); thus belonging to a different topological class than BiTe1.5S1.5. The measured band structure presented here will be a valuable guide for interpreting transport, thermoelectric, and thermopower measurements on these compounds. The unique surface band topology observed in these compounds contributes towards identifying designer materials with desired flexibility needed for thermoelectric and spintronic device fabrication.

Magnetically induced spin reorientation on the surface of a topological insulator (a surface magnetic topological insulator MBE film)

The surface of topological insulators is proposed as a promising platform for spintronics and quantum information applications. In particular, when time- reversal symmetry is broken, topological surface states are expected to exhibit a wide range of exotic spin phenomena for potential implementation in electronics. Such devices need to be fabricated using nanoscale artificial thin films. It is of critical importance to study the spin behavior of artificial topological MBE thin films associated with magnetic dopants, and with regards to quantum size effects related to surface-to-surface tunneling as well as experimentally isolate time-reversal breaking from non-intrinsic surface electronic gaps. Here we present observation of the first (and thorough) study of magnetically induced spin reorientation phenomena on the surface of a topological insulator. Our results reveal dramatic rearrangements of the spin configuration upon magnetic doping contrasted with chemically similar nonmagnetic doping as well as with quantum tunneling phenomena in ultra-thin high quality MBE films. While we observe that the spin rearrangement induced by quantum tunneling occurs in a time-reversal invariant fashion, we present critical and systematic observation of an out-of-plane spin texture evolution correlated with magnetic interactions, which breaks time-reversal symmetry, demonstrating microscopic TRB at a Kramers' point on the surface.

Different doping from apical and planar oxygen vacancies in Ba$_{2}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ and La$_{2}$CuO$_{4-δ}$

First principles band-structure calculations for large supercells of Ba$_{2}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ and La$_{2}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ with different distributions and concentrations of oxygen vacancies show that the effective doping on copper sites strongly depends on where the vacancy is located. A vacancy within the Cu layer produces a weak doping effect while a vacancy located at an apical oxygen site acts as a stronger electron dopant on the copper layers and gradually brings the electronic structure close to that of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4}$. These effects are robust and only depend marginally on lattice distortions. Our results show that deoxygenation can reduce the effect of traditional La/Sr or La/Nd substitutions. Our study clearly identifies location of the dopant in the crystal structure as an important factor in doping of the cuprate planes.

A topological crystalline insulator (TCI) phase via topological phase transition and crystalline mirror symmetry

A Z2 topological insulator protected by time-reversal symmetry is realized via spin-orbit interaction driven band inversion. For example, the topological phase in the Bi-Sb system is due to an odd number of band inversions. A related spin-orbit system, the (Pb/Sn)Te class, has been known to contain an even number of inversions based on band theory. Here we experimentally investigate the possibility of a mirror symmetry protected topological crystalline insulator phase in the (Pb/Sn)Te class of materials which has been theoretically predicted to exist in its non-alloyed version. Our experimental results show that at a finite-Pb composition above the topological inversion phase transition, the surface exhibits even number of spin-polarized Dirac cone states (as opposed to odd as observed in Bi-Sb alloy or Bi2Se3) revealing mirror protected topological order distinct from that observed in Bi-Sb or Bi2Se3. Our observation of the spin-polarized Dirac surface states in the inverted (Pb/Sn)Te and their absence in the non-inverted compounds related via a topological phase transition (spin-orbit induced band inversion type) provide the experimental groundwork for opening the research on novel topological order in future quantum devices.

Topological electronic structure and Weyl semimetal in the TlBiSe$_2$ class of semiconductors

We present an analysis of bulk and surface electronic structures of thallium based ternary III-V-VI$_2$ series of compounds TlMQ$_2$, where M=Bi or Sb and Q=S, Se or Te, using the ab initio density functional theory framework. Based on parity analysis and (111) surface electronic structure, we predict TlSbSe$_2$, TlSbTe$_2$, TlBiSe$_2$ and TlBiTe$_2$ to be non-trivial topological insulators with a single Dirac cone at the $Γ$-point, and TlSbS$_2$ and TlBiS$_2$ to be trivial band insulators. Our predicted topological phases agree well with available angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements, in particular the topological phase changes between TlBiSe$_2$ and TlBiS$_2$. Moreover, we propose that Weyl semimetal can be realized at the topological critical point in TlBi(S$_{1-x}$Se$_x$)$_2$ and TlBi(S$_{1-x}$Te$_x$)$_2$ alloys by breaking the inversion symmetry in the layer by layer growth in the order of Tl-Se(Te)-Bi-S, yielding six Dirac cones centered along the $Γ-L$ directions in the bulk band structure.

Lindhard and RPA susceptibility computations in extended momentum space in electron doped cuprates

We present an approximation for efficient calculation of the Lindhard susceptibility $χ^{L}(q,ω)$ in a periodic system through the use of simple products of real space functions and the fast Fourier transform (FFT). The method is illustrated by providing $χ^{L}(q,ω)$ results for the electron doped cuprate Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ extended over several Brillouin zones. These results are relevant for interpreting inelastic X-ray scattering spectra from cuprates.

Self Energy and Fluctuation Spectra in Cuprates: Comparing Optical and Photoemission Results

We compare efforts to extract self energies and fluctuation spectra of the cuprates using optical and photoemission techniques. The fluctuations have contributions from both the coherent and incoherent parts of the band, which are spread over the full bare bandwidth of >2eV. Many experimental studies concentrate on the coherent part of the band and hence miss higher energy fluctuations. Our study establishes the universal presence of high energy bosonic fluctuations across various spectroscopies as a key ingredient in the high temperature superconducting cuprates.

Short Range Smectic and Long Range Nematic Order in the Pseudogap Phase of Cuprates

We present a model for the combined nematic and `smectic' or stripe-like orders seen in recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments in cuprates. We model the stripe order as an electronic charge density wave with associated Peierls distortion -- a `Pomeranchuk wave'. Disorder restricts this primary order to nanoscale domains, while secondary coupling to strain generates nematic order with considerably longer range.

Gutzwiller Magnetic Phase Diagram of the Cuprates

A general constructive procedure is presented for analyzing magnetic instabilities in two-dimensional materials, in terms of [predominantly] double nesting, and applied to Hartree-Fock HF+RPA and Gutzwiller approximation GA+RPA calculations of the Hubbard model. Applied to the cuprates, it is found that competing magnetic interactions are present only for hole doping, between half filling and the Van Hove singularity. While HF+RPA instabilities are present at all dopings (for sufficiently large Hubbard U), in a Gutzwiller approximation they are restricted to a doping range close to the range of relevance for the physical cuprates. The same model would hold for charge instabilities, except that the interaction is more likely to be q-dependent.

Observation of Topological Crystalline Insulator phase in the lead tin chalcogenide Pb1-xSnxTe material class

We perform systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopic measurements on the lead tin telluride Pb1-xSnxTe pseudobinary alloy system. We show that the (001) crystalline surface, which is a crystalline surface symmetric about the (110) mirror planes of the Pb1-xSnxTe crystal, pos- sesses four metallic surface states within its surface Brillouin zone. Our systematic Fermi surface and band topology measurements show that the observed Dirac-like surface states lie on the symmetric momentum-space cuts. We further show that upon going to higher electron binding energies, the surface states' isoenergetic countours in close vicinity of each X point are observed to hybridize with each other, leading to a Fermi surface fractionalization and the Lifshitz transition. In addition, systematic incident photon energy dependent measurements are performed, which enable us to un- ambiguously identify the surface states from the bulk bands. These systematic measurements of the surface and bulk electronic structure on Pb1-xSnxTe, supported by our first principles calculation results, for the first time, show that the Pb1-xSnxTe system belongs to the topological crystalline insulator phase due to the four band inversions at the L points in its Brillouin zone, which has been recently theoretically predicted.
