X-ray absorption near-edge spectra of overdoped La_2-xSr_xCuO_4 high-T_c superconductors

We present results for realistic modeling of the x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) of the overdoped high-T_c superconductor La_2-xSr_xCuO_4 in the hole doping range x = 0.20-0.30. Our computations are based on a real-space Green's function approach in which strong-correlation effects are taken into account in terms of a doping-dependent self-energy. The predicted O K-edge XANES is found to be in good accord with the corresponding experimental results in this overdoped regime. We find that the low energy spectra are dominated by the contribution of O-atoms in the cuprate planes, with little contribution from apical O-atoms.

Realization of an isolated Dirac node and strongly modulated Spin Texture in the topological insulator Bi2Te3

The development of spin-based applications of topological insulators requires the knowledge and understanding of spin texture configuration maps as they change via gating in the vicinity of an isolated Dirac node. An isolated (graphene-like) Dirac node, however, does not exist in Bi2Te3. While the isolation of surface states via transport channels has been promisingly achieved in Bi2Te3, it is not known how spin textures modulate while gating the surface. Another drawback of Bi2Te3 is that it features multiple band crossings while chemical potential is placed near the Dirac node (at least 3 not one as in Bi2Se3 and many other topological insulators) and its buried Dirac point is not experimentally accessible for the next generation of experiments which require tuning the chemical potential near an isolated (graphene-like) Dirac node. Here, we image the spin texture of Bi2Te3 and suggest a simple modification to realize a much sought out isolated Dirac node regime critical for almost all potential applications (of topological nature) of Bi2Te3. Finally, we demonstrate carrier control in magnetically and nonmagnetically doped Bi2Te3 essential for realizing giant magneto-optical effects and dissipationless spin current devices involving a Bi2Te3-based platform.

Induced superconductivity in noncuprate layers of the Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ high-temperature superconductor: Modeling of scanning tunneling spectra

We analyze how the coherence peaks observed in Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS) of cuprate high temperature superconductors are transferred from the cuprate layer to the oxide layers adjacent to the STS microscope tip. For this purpose, we have carried out a realistic multiband calculation for the superconducting state of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) assuming a short range d-wave pairing interaction confined to the nearest-neighbor Cu $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals. The resulting anomalous matrix elements of the Green's function allow us to monitor how pairing is then induced not only within the cuprate bilayer but also within and across other layers and sites. The symmetry properties of the various anomalous matrix elements and the related selection rules are delineated.

Observation of novel interference patterns in Bi2-xFexTe3+d by Fourier transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy

In topological insulators (TI), strong spin-orbit coupling results in non-trivial scattering processes of the surface states, whose effects include suppressed back scattering1, 2, 3, 4 weak anti-localization5, 6 and the possibility of an exotic Kondo effect that mimics graphene7. Introducing time reversal breaking perturbations and establishing long-range magnetic order has been theorized to lead to the formation of quantized magnetoelectric phenomena8, fractionalized charge excitations, and the appearance of quantum wire states9. A key, elusive, step in exploring these and other novel electronic phases is the experimental observation of charge backscattering due to spin-flip processes at the surface of a magnetically-doped TI. Here we utilize Fourier transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy (FT-STS) to probe the surface of a magnetically doped TI, Bi2-xFexTe3+d. Our measurements show the appearance of a hitherto unobserved channel of electronic backscattering along surface q-vector Γκ. By combining FT-STS with angle-resolved photoemission data, we identify the momentum space origins of the observed q-vectors, which on comparison to a model calculation are enhanced by spin-flip scattering. Our findings present compelling evidence for the first spatial and momentum resolved measurements of magnetic impurity induced backscattering in a prototypical TI.

Failure of t-J models in describing doping evolution of spectral weight in x-ray scattering, optical and photoemission spectra of the cuprates

We have analyzed experimental evidence for an anomalous transfer of spectral weight from high to low energy scales in both electron and hole doped cuprates as a function of doping. X-ray scattering, optical and photoemission spectra are all found to show that the high energy spectral weight decreases with increasing doping at a rate much faster than predictions of the large $U-$limit calculations. The observed doping evolution is however well-described by an intermediate coupling scenario where the effective Hubbard $U$ is comparable to the bandwidth. The experimental spectra across various spectroscopies are inconsistent with fixed-$U$ exact diagonalization or quantum Monte Carlo calculations, and suggest a significant doping dependence of the effective $U$ in the cuprates.

Discovery of several large families of Topological Insulator classes with backscattering-suppressed spin-polarized single-Dirac-cone on the surface

Three dimensional (3D) topological insulators are novel states of quantum matter that feature spin-momentum locked helical Dirac fermions on their surfaces and hold promise to open new vistas in spintronics, quantum computing and fundamental physics. Experimental realization of many of the predicted topological phenomena requires finding multi-variant topological band insulators which can be multiply connected to magnetic semiconductors and superconductors. Here we present our theoretical prediction and experimental discovery of several new topological insulator classes in AB2X4(124), A2B2X5(225), MN4X7(147), A2X2X'(221) [A,B=Pb,Ge,Sb,Bi and M,N=Pb,Bi and X,X'=Chalcogen family]. We observe that these materials feature gaps up to about 0.35eV. Multi-variant nature allows for diverse surface dispersion tunability, Fermi surface spin-vortex or textured configurations and spin-dependent electronic interference signaling novel quantum transport processes on the surfaces of these materials. Our discovery also provides several new platforms to search for topological-superconductivity (arXiv:0912.3341v1 (2009)) in these exotic materials.

Single-Dirac-Cone topological surface states in TlBiSe2 class of Topological Insulators

We have investigated several strong spin-orbit coupling ternary chalcogenides related to the (Pb,Sn)Te series of compounds. Our first-principles calculations predict the low temperature rhombohedral ordered phase in TlBiTe2, TlBiSe2, and TlSbX2 (X=Te, Se, S) to be topologically Kane-Mele Z2 = -1 nontrivial. We identify the specific surface termination that realizes the single Dirac cone through first-principles surface state computations. This termination minimizes effects of dangling bonds making it favorable for photoemission (ARPES) experiments. Our analysis predicts that thin films of these materials would harbor novel 2D quantum spin Hall states, and support odd-parity topological superconductivity. For a related work also see arXiv:1003.2615v1. Experimental ARPES results will be published elsewhere.

Emergence of non-Fermi-liquid behavior due to Fermi surface reconstruction in the underdoped cuprate superconductors

We present an intermediate coupling scenario together with a model analytic solution where the non-Fermi-liquid behavior in the underdoped cuprates emerges through the mechanism of Fermi surface (FS) reconstruction. Even though the fluctuation spectrum remains nearly isotropic, FS reconstruction driven by a density wave order breaks the lattice symmetry and induces a strong momentum dependence in the self-energy. As the doping is reduced to half-filling, we find that quasiparticle (QP) dispersion becomes essentially unrenormalized, but in sharp contrast the QP spectral weight renormalizes to nearly zero. This opposite doping evolution of the renormalization factors for QP dispersion and spectral weight conspires in such a way that the specific heat remains Fermi liquid like at all dopings in accord with experiments.

Single-Dirac-cone Z2 topological insulator phases in distorted Li2AgSb-class and related quantum critical Li-based spin-orbit compounds

We have extended our new materials class search for the experimental realization of Z2 topological insulators from binary [Bi2Se3-class, Xia et.al., Nature Phys. 5, 398 (2009)] and the ternary [Half-Heusler class, Lin et.al., arXiv:1003.0155v1 (2010); arXiv:1003.2615v1 (2010)] series to non-Heusler Li-based ternary intermetallic series Li2M'X ($M'$=Cu, Ag, and Au, $X$=Sb and Bi) with CuHg2Ti-type structure. We discovered that the distorted-Li2AgSb is a lightweight compound harboring a 3D topological insulator state with Z2=-1 although the groundstate lies near a critical point, whereas the related Li2CuSb-type compounds are topologically trivial. Non-Heusler ternary Li2M'X series (with a number of variant compounds) we identified here is a new platform for deriving novel stoichiometric compounds, artificial quantum-well/heterostructures, nano-wires, nano-ribbons and nanocrystals. We have grown some of these bulk materials (experimental results will be reported separately).

Single-Dirac-Cone topological surface states on pseudo-IV-VI-semimetal/semiconductors: Thallium-based III-V-VI2 Ternary Chalcogenides

We have investigated several classes of strong spin-orbit chalcogenides related to the (Pb,Sn)Te series studied in connection with the Dirac fermion physics in the 1980s. Our first-principle theoretical calculations suggest that ternary chalcogenides TlBiX$_2$ and TlSbX$_2$ (X=Te, Se, S) series harbor small bandgap topological insulators with single Dirac cone on some selective surfaces whereas the isostructural and isoelectronic silver-based AgBiX$_2$ and AgSbX$_2$ (X=Te, Se, S) series do not. We find that several Tl-compounds are in the vicinity of a topological critical point. We identify the precise surface termination that realizes the single Dirac cone. The single-Dirac-cone surface is shown to be correlated with a termination that minimizes dangling bonding effects favorable for ARPES experiments. Our results further suggest that this class of topological semi-metals may harbor odd-parity topological superconductors similar to the possibility proposed for CuxBi2Se3 (T_c ~ 4K).

A new platform for topological quantum phenomena : Topological Insulator states in thermoelectric Heusler-related ternary compounds

Topological insulators (TI) realize a novel state of quantum matter that are distinguished by topological invariants of bulk band structure rather than spontaneously broken symmetries. A number of exotic quantum phenomena have been predicted to exist in multiply-connected geometries which require an enormous amount of materials flexibility. We have extended our previous search for TI materials from binary (Bi2X3 series) to the thermoelectric ternary compounds. We discover that the distorted LuPtSb is the first ternary compound harboring a 3D topological insulator state. We also show that the half-Heusler LuPtSb-type series is a natural platform that hosts a range of candidate compounds, alloys and artificial heterostructures (quantum-wells). We also discovered several different paradigms of trivial and non-trivial topological ordering in this class, including a metallic nontrivial topological state in YAuPb. Some of these materials are grown (results will be reported separately).

Optical model-solution to the competition between a pseudogap phase and a Mott-gap phase in high-temperature cuprate superconductors

We present a theoretical framework for a quantitative understanding of the full doping dependence of the optical spectra of the cuprates. In accord with experimental observations, the computed spectra show how the high-energy Mott features continue to persist in the overdoped regime even after the mid-infrared (MIR) peak originating from the pseudogap has collapsed in a quantum critical point. In this way, we reconcile the opposing tendencies of the MIR and Mott peaks to shift in opposite directions in the optical spectra with increasing doping. The competition between the pseudogap and the Mott gap also results in rapid loss of spectral weight in the high energy region with doping.

Proposal to determine the Fermi-surface topology of a doped iron-based superconductor using bulk-sensitive Fourier-transform Compton scattering

We have carried out first-principles calculations of the Compton scattering spectra to demonstrate that the filling of the hole Fermi surface in LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs produces a distinct signature in the Fourier transformed Compton spectrum when the momentum transfer vector lies along the [100] direction. We thus show how the critical concentration $x_c$, where hole Fermi surface pieces are filled up and the superconductivity mediated by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations is expected to be suppressed, can be obtained in a bulk-sensitive manner.

High resolution Compton scattering as a Probe of the Fermi surface in the Iron-based superconductor $LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$

We have carried out first principles all-electron calculations of the (001)-projected 2D electron momentum density and the directional Compton profiles along the [100], [001] and [110] directions in the Fe-based superconductor LaOFeAs within the framework of the local density approximation. We identify Fermi surface features in the 2D electron momentum density and the directional Compton profiles, and discuss issues related to the observation of these features via Compton scattering experiments.

Intermediate coupling model of cuprates: adding fluctuations to a weak coupling model of pseudogap and superconductuctivity competition

We demonstrate that many features ascribed to strong correlation effects in various spectroscopies of the cuprates are captured by a calculation of the self-energy incorporating effects of spin and charge fluctuations. The self energy is calculated over the full doping range from half filling to the overdoped system. In the normal state, the spectral function reveals four subbands: two widely split incoherent bands representing the remnant of the two Hubbard bands, and two additional coherent, spin- and charge-dressed in-gap bands split by a spin-density wave, which collapses in the overdoped regime. The resulting coherent subbands closely resemble our earlier mean-field results. Here we present an overview of the combined results of our mean-field calculations and the newer extensions into the intermediate coupling regime.

First observation of Spin-Momentum Helical Locking in Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3, demonstration of Topological-Order at 300K and a realization of topological-transport-regime

Both the theoretical and experimental discovery of single-Dirac-cone topological-insulator-class was reported at arXiv:0812.2078 (2008) [Y. Xia et.al., Nature Physics 5, 398-402 (2009) http://www.nature.com/nphys/journal/v5/n6/full/nphys1294.html]. Here we report the first observation of Spin-Momentum Helical Locking and Spin-Vortex structures in Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3, demonstrate the existence of Topological-Order at 300K and report a material realization of topological-transport-regime for helical Dirac fermions. Our results reveal a one-to-one spin-momentum locked Dirac structure in Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3 that is nearly 100% spin-polarized, which exhibits a tunable topological fermion density in the vicinity of the Kramers' point and can be driven to the long-sought topological-transport-regime. The observed topological nodal Dirac ground state is found to be protected even up to room temperature (300 K). Our results pave the way for future transport based studies of topological insulators, and possible room temperature applications of protected spin-polarized edge channels we observe with spin-ARPES in spintronic technology. All of these new results are made possible due to the Spin-resolved-ARPES (Mott polarimetric) technique [http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v460/n7259/full/nature08234.html ] .

Spin-textures, Berry's phase and Quasiparticle Interference in Bi2Te3: A Topological Insulator with Warped Surface States

The energy-momentum relationship of electrons on the surface of an ideal "Hydrogen-Atom" Topological Insulator forms a cone - a Dirac cone, which, when warped and distorted (no longer described by the Dirac equation), can lead to unusual phenomena such as enhanced electronic interference around defects (observed in STM) and a magnetically ordered broken symmetry surface with lost topological protection. A detailed spin-texture and hexagonal warping maps on Bi2Te3 are presented in this context as a Viewpoint on L.Fu, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{103}, 266801 (2009).

Observation of unconventional band topology in a superconducting doped topological insulator, Cux-Bi2Se3: Topological Superconductor or non-Abelian superconductor?

The Cu-doped topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ has recently been found to undergo a superconducting transition upon cooling, raising the possibilities that it is the first known "topological superconductor" or realizes a novel non-Abelian superconducting state. Its true nature depends critically on the bulk and surface state band topology. We present the first photoemission spectroscopy results where by examining the band topology at many different copper doping values we discover that the topologically protected spin-helical surface states remain well protected and separate from bulk Dirac bands at the Fermi level where Copper pairing occurs in the optimally doped topological insulator. The addition of copper is found to result in nonlinear electron doping and strong renormalization of the topological surface states. These highly unusual observations strongly suggest that superconductivity on the topological surface of Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ cannot be of any conventional type in account of the general topological theory. Characteristics of the three dimensional bulk Dirac band structure are reported for the first time with respect to the superconducting doping state and topological invariant properties which should help formulate a specific theory for this novel superconductor.
