Mass determination of the three long-period Neptune- and sub-Neptune-sized planets transiting TOI-282

TOI-282 is a bright (V=9.38) F8 main-sequence star known to host three transiting long-period ($P_b$=22.9 d, $P_c$=56.0 d, and $P_d$=84.3 d) small ($R_p\approx$ 2-4 $R_{\oplus}$) planets. The orbital period ratio of the two outermost planets, namely TOI-282 c and d, is close to the 3:2 commensurability, suggesting that the planets might be trapped in a mean motion resonance. We combined space-borne photometry from the TESS telescope with high-precision HARPS and ESPRESSO Doppler measurements to refine orbital parameters, measure the planetary masses, and investigate the architecture and evolution of the system. We performed a Markov chain Monte Carlo joint analysis of the transit light curves and radial velocity time series, and carried out a dynamical analysis to model transit timing variations and Doppler measurements along with N-body integration. In agreement with previous results, we found that TOI-282 b, c, and d have radii of $R_b=2.69 \pm 0.23 \ R_{\oplus}$, $R_c=4.13^{+0.16}_{-0.14} \ R_{\oplus}$, and $R_d=3.11 \pm 0.15 \ R_{\oplus}$, respectively. We measured planetary masses of $M_b=6.2\pm1.6 \ M_{\oplus}$, $M_c=9.2\pm2.0 \ M_{\oplus}$, and $M_d=5.8^{+0.9}_{-1.1} \ M_{\oplus}$, which imply mean densities of $\rho_b=1.8^{+0.7}_{-0.6} \ \text{g cm}^{-3}$, $\rho_c=0.7 \pm 0.2 \ \text{g cm}^{-3}$, and $\rho_d=1.1^{+0.3}_{-0.2} \ \text{g cm}^{-3}$, respectively. The three planets may be water worlds, making TOI-282 an interesting system for future atmospheric follow-up observations with JWST and ELT.

Tunable High-Q Resonator by General Impedance Converter

For the need of measurements focused in condensed matter physics and especially Bernoulli effect in superconductors we have developed an active resonator with dual operational amplifiers. A tunable high-Q resonator is performed in the schematics of the the General Impedance Converter (GIC). In the framework of frequency dependent open-loop gain of operational amplifiers, a general formula of the frequency dependence of the impedance of GIC is derived. The explicit formulas for the resonance frequency and Q-factor include as immanent parameter the crossover frequency of the operational amplifier. Voltage measurements of GIC with a lock-in amplifier perfectly agree with the derived formulas. A table reveals that electrometer operational amplifiers are the best choice to build the described resonator.

Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling and the "cosmic" Josephson effect

We discuss the possible influence of a cosmic magnetic field on the macroscopic quantum tunneling process associated, in a cosmological context, to the decay of the "false vacuum." We find a close analogy with the effects of an external magnetic field applied to a Josephson junction in the context of low-temperature/high-temperature superconducting devices.

Mesoscopic conductance fluctuations in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ grain boundary Junction at low temperature

The magneto-conductance in YBCO grain boundary Josephson junctions, displays fluctuations at low temperatures of mesoscopic origin. The morphology of the junction suggests that transport occurs in narrow channels across the grain boundary line, with a large Thouless energy. Nevertheless the measured fluctuation amplitude decreases quite slowly when increasing the voltage up to values about twenty times the Thouless energy, of the order of the nominal superconducting gap. Our findings show the coexistence of supercurrent and quasiparticle current in the junction conduction even at high nonequilibrium conditions. Model calculations confirm the reduced role of quasiparticle relaxation at temperatures up to 3 Kelvin.

The effect of Magnetic Field on MQT Escape Time in "Small" Josephson Junctions

We study the phenomenon of macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in a finite size Josephson junction (JJ) with an externally applied magnetic field. As it is well known, the problem of MQT in a point-like JJ is reduced to the study of the under-barrier motion of a quantum particle in the washboard potential. In the case of a finite size JJ placed in magnetic field, this problem is considerably more complex since, besides the phase, the potential itself, depends on space variables. We find the general expressions both for the crossover temperature $T_{0}$ between thermally activated and macroscopic quantum tunneling regimes and the escape time $τ_{\mathrm{esc}}$. It turns out that in proximity of particular values of magnetic field the crossover temperature can vary non-monotonically.

Coherent quasiparticle transport in grain boundary junctions employing high-Tc superconductors

Magneto-fluctuations of the normal resistance RN have been reproducibly observed in YBa2Cu3O7-d biepitaxial grain boundary junctions at low temperatures. We attribute them to mesoscopic transport in narrow channels across the grain boundary line, occurring in an unusual energy regime. The Thouless energy appears to be the relevant energy scale. Possible implications on the understanding of coherent transport of quasiparticles in HTS and of the dissipation mechanisms are discussed.

Macroscopic quantum tunneling in "small" Josephson junctions in magnetic field

We study the phenomenon of macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in small Josephson junctions (JJ) with an externally applied magnetic field. The latter results in the appearance of the Fraunhofer type modulation of the current density along the barrier. The problem of MQT for a point-like JJ is reduced to the motion of the quantum particle in the washboard potential. In the case of a finite size JJ under consideration, this problem corresponds to a MQT in potential which itself, besides the phase, depends on space variables. Finally, the general expression for the crossover temperature T_0 between thermally activated and macroscopic quantum tunneling regimes and the escaping time tau_esc have been calculated.

Observation of mesoscopic conductance fluctuations in YBaCuO grain boundary Josephson Junctions

Magneto-fluctuations of the normal resistance R_N have been reproducibly observed in high critical temp erature superconductor (HTS) grain boundary junctions, at low temperatures. We attribute them to mesoscopic transport in narrow channels across the grain boundary line. The Thouless energy appears to be the relevant energy scale. Our findings have significant implications on quasiparticle relaxation and coherent transport in HTS grain boundaries.

Observation of a New Fluxon Resonant Mechanism in Annular Josephson Tunnel Structures

A novel dynamical state has been observed in the dynamics of a perdurbed sine-Gordon system. This resonant state, has been experimentally observed as a singularity in the dc current voltage characteristic of an annular Josephson tunnel junction, excited in the presence of a magnetic field. With this respect, it can be assimilated to self-resonances known as Fiske steps. Differently from these, however, we demonstrate, on the basis of numerical simulations, that its detailed dynamics involves rotating fluxon pairs, a mechanism associated, so far, to self-resonances known as zero-field steps.

Quantum Computational Gates with Radiation Free Couplings

We examine a generic three state mechanism which realizes all fundamental single and double qubit quantum logic gates operating under the effect of adiabatically controllable static (radiation free) bias couplings between the states. At the instant of time that the gate operations are defined the third level is unoccupied which, in a certain sense, derives analogy with the recently suggested dissipation free qubit subspaces. The physical implementation of the mechanism is tentatively suggested in a form of the Aharonov-Bohm persistent current loop in crossed electric and magnetic fields, with the output of the loop read out by a (quantum) Hall effect aided mechanism.

Quantum Computation with Aharonov-Bohm Qubits

We analyze the posibility of employing the mesoscopic-nanoscopic ring of a normal metal in a doubly degenerate persistent current state with a third auxihilary level and in the presence of the Aharonov-Bohm flux equal to the half of the normal flux quantum $\hbar c/e$ as a qubit. The auxiliary level can be effectively used for all fundamental quantum logic gate (qu-gate) operations which includes the initialization, phase rotation, bit flip and the Hadamard transformation as well as the double-qubit controlled operations (conditional bit flip). We suggest a tentative realization of the mechanism as either the mesoscopic structure of three quantum dots coherently coupled by mesoscopic tunnelling in crossed magnetic and electric fields, or as a nanoscopic structure of triple anionic vacancy (similar to $F_3$ centers in alkali halides) with one trapped electron in one spin projection state.

Pulse-induced switches in a Josephson tunnel stacked device

Pulse activated transitions from the metastable to the running state and viceversa have been observed in a stacked double tunnel Nb-based Josephson system. Experimental results are compared with numerical simulations based on the Sine-Gordon model of the stacked junctions by injecting pulses with variable amplitude in one of the junctions of the stack, and observing the voltage response of the other junction. Both experimental and numerical results show the possibility to induce both direct and back-switching transitions from the metastable to the running state simply by changing the amplitude of the electronic pulses injected across the stack device.

Feasibility of biepitaxial YBaCuO Josephson junctions for fundamental studies and potential circuit implementation

We present various concepts and experimental procedures to produce biepitaxial YBaCuO grain boundary Josephson junctions. The device properties have an interesting phenomenology related in part to the possible influence of "pai loops". The performance of our junctions and Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices indicates significant improvement in the biepitaxial technique. Further, we propose methods for fabricating circuits in which "0-" and "pai-loops" are controllably located on the same chip.
