A molecular dynamics "Maxwell Demon" experiment for granular mixtures

We report a series of molecular dynamics simulations and investigate the possibility to separate a granular mixture of inelastic hard spheres by vigorously shaking it in a box made of two connected compartments. As its one-component counterpart, the system exhibits a ``left-right'' symmetry breaking entirely due to the inelasticity of grain-grain collisions, and triggered by increasing the number of particles. In the compartment where the density of grains is larger, we observe a partial segregation with a predominance of heavy particles. However, this compartment still has a higher density of light particles than the other one, which is light-rich. The density, granular temperature and anisotropic pressure profiles are monitored. We also discuss how to construct a relevant order parameter for this transition and show that the resulting bifurcation diagram is dominated by large fluctuations.

Extreme events driven glassy behaviour in granular media

Motivated by recent experiments on the approach to jamming of a weakly forced granular medium using an immersed torsion oscillator [Nature 413 (2001) 407], we propose a simple model which relates the microscopic dynamics to macroscopic rearrangements and accounts for the following experimental facts: (1) the control parameter is the spatial amplitude of the perturbation and not its reduced peak acceleration; (2) a Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann-like form for the relaxation time. The model draws a parallel between macroscopic rearrangements in the system and extreme events whose probability of occurrence (and thus the typical relaxation time) is estimated using extreme-value statistics. The range of validity of this description in terms of the control parameter is discussed as well as the existence of other regimes.

Lack of energy equipartition in homogeneous heated binary granular mixtures

We consider the problem of determining the granular temperatures of the components of a homogeneous binary heated mixture of inelastic hard spheres, in the framework of Enskog kinetic theory. Equations are derived for the temperatures of each species and their ratio, which is different from unity, as may be expected since the system is out of equilibrium. We focus on the particular heating mechanism where the inelastic energy loss is compensated by an injection through a random external force (``stochastic thermostat''). The influence of various parameters and their possible experimental relevance is discussed.

On the velocity distributions of the one-dimensional inelastic gas

We consider the single-particle velocity distribution of a one-dimensional fluid of inelastic particles. Both the freely evolving (cooling) system and the non-equilibrium stationary state obtained in the presence of random forcing are investigated, and special emphasis is paid to the small inelasticity limit. The results are obtained from analytical arguments applied to the Boltzmann equation along with three complementary numerical techniques (Molecular Dynamics, Direct Monte Carlo Simulation Methods and iterative solutions of integro-differential kinetic equations). For the freely cooling fluid, we investigate in detail the scaling properties of the bimodal velocity distribution emerging close to elasticity and calculate the scaling function associated with the distribution function. In the heated steady state, we find that, depending on the inelasticity, the distribution function may display two different stretched exponential tails at large velocities. The inelasticity dependence of the crossover velocity is determined and it is found that the extremely high velocity tail may not be observable at ``experimentally relevant'' inelasticities.

Edwards measures for powders and glasses

Can one construct a thermodynamics for compact, slowly moving powders and grains? A few years ago, Edwards proposed a possible step in this direction, raising the fascinating perspective that such systems have a statistical mechanics of their own, different from that of Maxwell, Boltzmann and Gibbs, allowing us to have some information while still ignoring dynamic details. Recent developments in the theory of glasses have come to confirm these ideas within mean-field. In order to go beyond, we explicitly generate Edwards' measure in a model that, although schematic, is three dimensional. Comparison of the results thus obtained with the irreversible compaction data shows very good agreement. The present framework immediately suggests new experimental checks.

Memory in aged granular media

Stimulated by recent experimental results, we simulate ``temperature''-cycling experiments in a model for the compaction of granular media. We report on the existence of two types of memory effects: short-term dependence on the history of the sample, and long-term memory for highly compact (aged) systems. A natural interpretation of these results is provided by the analysis of the density heterogeneities.

Free cooling and inelastic collapse of granular gases in high dimensions

The connection between granular gases and sticky gases has recently been considered, leading to the conjecture that inelastic collapse is avoided for space dimensions higher than 4. We report Molecular Dynamics simulations of hard inelastic spheres in dimensions 4, 5 and 6. The evolution of the granular medium is monitored throughout the cooling process. The behaviour is found to be very similar to that of a two-dimensional system, with a shearing-like instability of the velocity field and inelastic collapse when collisions are inelastic enough, showing that the connection with sticky gases needs to be revised.

On the properties of small-world network models

We study the small-world networks recently introduced by Watts and Strogatz [Nature {\bf 393}, 440 (1998)], using analytical as well as numerical tools. We characterize the geometrical properties resulting from the coexistence of a local structure and random long-range connections, and we examine their evolution with size and disorder strength. We show that any finite value of the disorder is able to trigger a ``small-world'' behaviour as soon as the initial lattice is big enough, and study the crossover between a regular lattice and a ``small-world'' one. These results are corroborated by the investigation of an Ising model defined on the network, showing for every finite disorder fraction a crossover from a high-temperature region dominated by the underlying one-dimensional structure to a mean-field like low-temperature region. In particular there exists a finite-temperature ferromagnetic phase transition as soon as the disorder strength is finite.

Comment on ``Small-world networks: Evidence for a crossover picture''

In a recent letter (cond-mat/9903108), Barthelemy and Nunes Amaral discuss the crossover phenomenon between regular and ``small-world'' networks, as a function of the network size $n$ and of the disorder $p$. They claim that the average distance $\ell$ between vertices of the network scales with $n / n^*$, with $n^*(p \ll 1) sim p^{-τ}$ and $τ\approx 2/3$. We show analytically that $τ$ cannot be lower than 1 and perform numerical simulations showing that $τ= 1$.

Fluctuations and correlations in sandpile models

We perform numerical simulations of the sandpile model for non-vanishing driving fields $h$ and dissipation rates $ε$. Unlike simulations performed in the slow driving limit, the unique time scale present in our system allows us to measure unambiguously response and correlation functions. We discuss the dynamic scaling of the model and show that fluctuation-dissipation relations are not obeyed in this system.

Time scale separation and heterogeneous off-equilibrium dynamics in spin models over random graphs

We study analytically and numerically the statics and the off-equilibrium dynamics of spin models over finitely connected random graphs. We identify a threshold value for the connectivity beyond which the loop structure of the graph becomes thermodynamically relevant. Glauber dynamics simulations show that this loop structure is responsible for the onset of dynamical features of a local character (dynamical heterogeneities and spontaneous time scale separation), consistently with previous (experimental and numerical) studies of glasses and spin glasses in their approach to the low temperature phase.

Monte-Carlo simulations of the violation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem in domain growth processes

Numerical simulations of various domain growth systems are reported, in order to compute the parameter describing the violation of fluctuation dissipation theorem (FDT) in aging phenomena. We compute two-times correlation and response functions and find that, as expected from the exact solution of a certain mean-field model (equivalent to the O(N) model in three dimensions, in the limit of N going to infinity), this parameter is equal to one (no violation of FDT) in the quasi-equilibrium regime (short separation of times), and zero in the aging regime.

Basins of attraction of metastable states of the spherical $p$-spin model

We study the basins of attraction of metastable states in the spherical $p$-spin spin glass model, starting the relaxation dynamics at a given distance from a thermalized condition. Weighting the initial condition with the Boltzmann distribution we find a finite size for the basins. On the contrary, a white weighting of the initial condition implies vanishing basins of attraction. We make the corresponding of our results with the ones of a recently constructed effective potential.

Temperature evolution and bifurcations of metastable states in mean-field spin glasses, with connections with structural glasses

The correlations of the free-energy landscape of mean-field spin glasses at different temperatures are investigated, concentrating on models with a first order freezing transition. Using a ``potential function'' we follow the metastable states of the model in temperature, and discuss the possibility of level crossing (which we do not find) and multifurcation (which we find). The dynamics at a given temperature starting from an equilibrium configuration at a different temperature is also discussed. In presence of multifurcation, we find that the equilibrium is never achieved, leading to aging behaviour at slower energy levels than usual aging. The relevance of the observed mechanisms for real structural glasses is discussed, and some numerical simulations of a soft sphere model of glass are presented.

The p-spin spherical spin glass model

This review presents various aspects of a mean-field spin glass model known as the p-spin spherical spin glass model, which has raised a lot of interest in the study of spin glasses, and also for its possible links with a mean-field theory of structural glasses. This preprint contains no new results and is therefore not intended to be published, but its aim is to present a collection of results and formulas concerning this very rich model. It is in fact the english translation of one of the chapters of my PhD thesis (``Quelques aspects de la dynamique hors d'equilibre des verres de spin'', ``Some aspects of the out of equilibrium dynamics of spin glasses''). A postscript version (in french) of this PhD thesis will soon be available at http://www.lpt.ens.fr .

Directed polymer in random media, in two dimensions: numerical study of the aging dynamics

Following a recent work by Yoshino, we study the aging dynamics of a directed polymer in random media, in 1+1 dimensions. Through temperature quench, and temperature cycling numerical experiments similar to the experiments on real spin glasses, we show that the observed behaviour is comparable to the one of a well known mean field spin glass model. The observation of various quantities (correlation function, ``clonation'' overlap function) leads to an analysis of the phase space landscape.

Dynamics within metastable states in a mean-field spin glass

In this letter we present a dynamical study of the structure of metastable states (corresponding to TAP solutions) in a mean-field spin-glass model. After reviewing known results of the statical approach, we use dynamics: starting from an initial condition thermalized at a temperature between the statical and the dynamical transition temperatures, we are able to study the relaxational dynamics within metastable states and we show that they are characterized by a true breaking of ergodicity and exponential relaxation.

Aging classification in glassy dynamics

We study the out of equilibrium dynamics of several models exhibiting aging. We attempt at identifying various types of aging systems using a phase space point of view: we introduce a trial classification, based on the overlap between two replicas of a system, which evolve together until a certain waiting time, and are then totally decoupled. We investigate in this way two types of systems, domain growth problems and spin glasses, and we show that they behave differently.
