Evidence for Anomalies in Muon-Induced Neutron Emissions from Pb

This paper examines neutron multiplicity spectra emitted from massive targets at depths of 3, 40, 210, 583, 1166, and 4000 m.w.e. The measurements, carried out between 2001 and 2024, used three experimental setups with either 14 or 60 He-3 neutron detectors and lead (Pb) targets weighing 306, 565, or 1134 kg. The total acquisition time exceeded six years. When available, the spectra obtained were compared with Monte Carlo simulations. Our data indicate potential anomalies that might limit the accuracy of modelling the muon-induced neutron multiplicity spectra with a single power-law function. Even at shallow depths, the single-power-law approach fails to account for a small but statistically significant excess of events at the highest multiplicities. This excess resembles a second power-law component. Since the anomaly varies only slightly with depth, it is unlikely to be directly linked to the muon flux. Our highest-quality data, acquired at 583 m.w.e., suggest a possible structure similar to the emission of approximately 74, 106, 143, and 214 neutrons from the target. We propose new underground measurements using low-cost, large-area, position-sensitive neutron arrays surrounding multi-ton Pb targets to verify and investigate these suspected anomalies and to determine their origin.

New Evidence for DM-like Anomalies in Neutron Multiplicity Spectra

Subterrestrial neutron spectra show weak but consistent anomalies at multiplicities ~100 and above. The origin of the excess events remains ambiguous, but, in principle, it could be a signature of Dark Matter WIMP annihilation-like interaction with a massive Pb target. However, since the results of the available measurements are below the 5-sigma discovery level, and the observed anomalous structures are on a significant muon-induced background, an independent verification at even greater depth is needed. For that purpose, we have launched NEMESIS 1.4 - a new dedicated experiment consisting of a 1134 kg Pb target and 14 He-3 detectors with PE moderators and a fully digital readout. NEMESIS 1.4 has been taking data at the deepest level (1.4 km, 4000 m.w.e.) of the Pyhasalmi mine, Finland, since November 2022. We describe the idea behind the new setup, compare the first results with the previous data and Monte Carlo simulations, and give the outlook for further research. If the existence of the anomalies is unambiguously confirmed and the model interpretation positively verified, this will be the first Indirect Detection of Dark Matter in the laboratory.

Measurement of the Parity-Odd Angular Distribution of Gamma Rays From Polarized Neutron Capture on $^{35}$Cl

We report a measurement of two energy-weighted gamma cascade angular distributions from polarized slow neutron capture on the ${}^{35}$Cl nucleus, one parity-odd correlation proportional to $\vec{s_{n}} \cdot \vec{k_γ}$ and one parity-even correlation proportional to $\vec{s_{n}} \cdot \vec{k_{n}} \times \vec{k_γ}$. A parity violating asymmetry can appear in this reaction due to the weak nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction which mixes opposite parity S and P-wave levels in the excited compound $^{36}$Cl nucleus formed upon slow neutron capture. If parity-violating (PV) and parity-conserving (PC) terms both exist, the measured differential cross section can be related to them via $\frac{dσ}{dΩ}\propto1+A_{γ, PV}\cosθ+A_{γ,PC}\sinθ$. The PV and PC asymmetries for energy-weighted gamma cascade angular distributions for polarized slow neutron capture on $^{35}$Cl averaged over the neutron energies from 2.27~meV to 9.53~meV were measured to be $A_{γ,PV}=(-23.9\pm0.7)\times 10^{-6}$ and $A_{γ,PC}=(0.1\pm0.7)\times 10^{-6}$. These results are consistent with previous experimental results. Systematic errors were quantified and shown to be small compared to the statistical error. These asymmetries in the angular distributions of the gamma rays emitted from the capture of polarized neutrons in $^{35}$Cl were used to verify the operation and data analysis procedures for the NPDGamma experiment which measured the parity-odd asymmetry in the angular distribution of gammas from polarized slow neutron capture on protons.

First Observation of $P$-odd $γ$ Asymmetry in Polarized Neutron Capture on Hydrogen

We report the first observation of the parity-violating 2.2 MeV gamma-ray asymmetry $A^{np}_γ$ in neutron-proton capture using polarized cold neutrons incident on a liquid parahydrogen target at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. $A^{np}_γ$ isolates the $ΔI=1$, \mbox{$^{3}S_{1}\rightarrow {^{3}P_{1}}$} component of the weak nucleon-nucleon interaction, which is dominated by pion exchange and can be directly related to a single coupling constant in either the DDH meson exchange model or pionless EFT. We measured $A^{np}_γ= [-3.0 \pm 1.4 (stat) \pm 0.2 (sys)]\times 10^{-8}$, which implies a DDH weak $πNN$ coupling of $h_π^{1} = [2.6 \pm 1.2(stat) \pm 0.2(sys)] \times 10^{-7}$ and a pionless EFT constant of $C^{^{3}S_{1}\rightarrow ^{3}P_{1}}/C_{0}=[-7.4 \pm 3.5 (stat) \pm 0.5 (sys)] \times 10^{-11}$ MeV$^{-1}$. We describe the experiment, data analysis, systematic uncertainties, and the implications of the result.
