Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetry in Very Forward and Very Backward Neutral Particle Production for Polarized Proton Collisions at sqrt{s} = 200 GeV

In the 2001-2002 running period of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), transversely polarized protons were accelerated to 100 GeV for the first time, with collisions at sqrt{s} = 200 GeV. We present results from this run for single transverse spin asymmetries for inclusive production of neutral pions, photons and neutrons of the energy region 20 - 100 GeV for forward and backward production for angles between 0.3 mrad and 2.2 mrad with respect to the polarized proton direction. An asymmetry of A_N = (-0.090 +- 0.006 +- 0.009) x (1.0^{+0.47}_{-0.24}) was observed for forward neutron production, where the errors are statistical and systematic, and the scale error is from the beam polarization uncertainty. The forward photon and pi^0, and backward neutron, photon, and pi^0 asymmetries were consistent with zero. The large neutron asymmetry indicates a strong interference between a spin-flip amplitude, such as one pion exchange which dominates lower energy neutron production, and remaining spin non-flip amplitudes such as Reggeon exchange.

Global Observables at PHENIX

We present PHENIX recent results on charged particle and transverse energy densities measured at mid-rapidity in Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=130 GeV and 200 GeV over broad range of centralities. The mean transverse energy per charged particle is derived. The first PHENIX measurements at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=19.6 GeV are also presented. A comparison with calculations from various theoretical models is performed.

Charge Particle Multiplicity and Transverse Energy Measurements in Au-Au collisions in PHENIX at RHIC

We present results on charged particle and transverse energy densities measured at mid-rapidity in Au-Au collisions at sqrt(s_{NN})=200 GeV. The mean transverse energy per charged particle is derived. The results are presented as a function of centrality, which is defined by the number of participating nucleons, and compared to results obtained in Au-Au collisions at sqrt{s_{NN})=130 GeV. A comparison with calculations from various theoretical models is performed.

High Energy Beam Test of the PHENIX Lead-Scintillator EM Calorimeter

In the PHENIX experiment at RHIC, the electro-magnetic calorimeter plays an important role in both the heavy-ion and spin physics programs for which it was designed. In order to measure its performance in the energy range up to 80GeV, a beam test was performed at the CERN-SPS H6 beam line. We describe the beam test and present results on calorimeter performance with pion and electron beams.

First Results from PHENIX at RHIC

The first results from Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=130 GeV obtained with the PHENIX detector in the Year 2000 run at RHIC are presented. The mid-rapidity charged particle multiplicity and transverse energy per participating nucleon rise steadily with the number of participants, such that transverse energy per charged particle remains relatively constant as a function of centrality. Identified charged hadron spectra as well as $\bar{p}/p$ and $K^+/K^-$ ratios are discussed. Charged particle and neutral pion transverse momentum distributions in peripheral nuclear collisions are consistent with point-like scaling. The spectra at high $p_t$ from central collisions are significantly suppressed when compared to a simple superposition of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions.
