Meson Screening Masses in the Interacting QCD Plasma

The meson screening mass in the pseudoscalar channel is calculated from the momentum dependent meson spectral function, using HTL fermionic propagators. A careful subtraction procedure is required to get an UV finite result. It is shown that in the whole range of temperatures explored here the HTL screening mass stays above the non-interacting result, slowly approaching the value $m_{\trm{scr}}=2\sqrt{π^2T^2+m_\infty^2}$, where $m_\infty^2$ is the HTL asymptotic thermal quark mass. Our analysis leads to a better understanding of the excitations of QGP at sufficiently large temperatures and may be of relevance for interpreting lattice results.

Mesonic correlation functions at finite temperature and density in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with a Polyakov loop

We investigate the properties of scalar and pseudo-scalar mesons at finite temperature and quark chemical potential in the framework of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model coupled to the Polyakov loop (PNJL model) with the aim of taking into account features of both chiral symmetry breaking and deconfinement. The mesonic correlators are obtained by solving the Schwinger-Dyson equation in the RPA approximation with the Hartree (mean field) quark propagator at finite temperature and density. In the phase of broken chiral symmetry a narrower width for the sigma meson is obtained with respect to the NJL case; on the other hand, the pion still behaves as a Goldstone boson. When chiral symmetry is restored, the pion and sigma spectral functions tend to merge. The Mott temperature for the pion is also computed.

Quarkonia in the deconfined phase: effective potentials and lattice correlators

The Schroedinger equation for the charmonium and bottomonium states at finite temperature is solved by employing an effective temperature dependent potential given by a linear combination of the color singlet free and internal energies obtained on the lattice from the Polyakov loop correlation functions. The melting temperatures and other properties of the quarkonium states are evaluated. The consistency of the potential model approach with the available lattice data on the quarkonium temporal correlators and spectral functions is explored.

Finite momentum meson correlation functions in a QCD plasma

The finite momentum meson spectral function (MSF) in the pseudoscalar channel is evaluated, adopting for the fermionic propagators HTL expressions. The different contributions to the meson spectral functions are clearly displayed. Our analysis may be of relevance for lattice studies of MSF based so far on the Maximum Entropy Method. As a further step the correlation function along the (imaginary-) temporal direction is evaluated.

Heavy quark bound states above $T_c$

A comprehensive parameterization of the colour singlet heavy quark free energy above $T_c$ is given, using the lattice data in quenched ($N_f=0$) and unquenched ($N_f=2$ and $N_f=3$) QCD. The corresponding (temperature dependent) potentials thus obtained are then inserted into the Schrödinger equation for the charmonium and the bottomonium in the deconfined phase of QCD. The solution of the equation provides an estimate of the melting temperature and of the radii for the different $c\bar{c}$ and $b\bar{b}$ bound states.

Meson correlation functions in a QCD plasma

The temporal pseudoscalar meson correlation function in a QCD plasma is investigated in a range of temperatures exceeding $T_c$ and yet of experimental interest. Only the flavour-singlet channel is considered and the imaginary time formalism is employed for the finite temperature calculations. The behaviour of the meson spectral function and of the temporal correlator is first studied in the HTL approximation, where one replaces the free thermal quark propagators with the HTL resummed ones. This procedure satisfactory describes the soft fermionic modes, but its application to the propagation of hard quarks is not reliable. An improved version of the so-called NLA scheme, which allows a better treatment of the hard fermionic modes, is then proposed. The impact of the improved NLA on the pseudoscalar temporal correlator is investigated.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking and response functions

We study the quantum phase transition occurring in an infinite homogeneous system of spin 1/2 fermions in a non-relativistic context. As an example we consider neutrons interacting through a simple spin-spin Heisenberg force. The two critical values of the coupling strength -- signaling the onset into the system of a finite magnetization and of the total magnetization, respectively -- are found and their dependence upon the range of the interaction is explored. The spin response function of the system in the region where the spin-rotational symmetry is spontaneously broken is also studied. For a ferromagnetic interaction the spin response along the direction of the spontaneous magnetization occurs in the particle-hole continuum and displays, for not too large momentum transfers, two distinct peaks. The response along the direction orthogonal to the spontaneous magnetization displays instead, beyond a softened and depleted particle-hole continuum, a collective mode to be identified with a Goldstone boson of type II. Notably, the random phase approximation on a Hartree-Fock basis accounts for it, in particular for its quadratic -- close to the origin -- dispersion relation. It is shown that the Goldstone boson contributes to the saturation of the energy-weighted sum rule for ~25% when the system becomes fully magnetized (that is in correspondence of the upper critical value of the interaction strength) and continues to grow as the interaction strength increases.

Mean field at finite temperature and symmetry breaking

For an infinite system of nucleons interacting through a central spin-isospin schematic force we discuss how the Hartree-Fock theory at finite temperature T yields back, in the T=0 limit, the standard zero-temperature Feynman theory when there is no symmetry breaking. The attention is focused on the mechanism of cancellation of the higher order Hartree-Fock diagrams and on the dependence of this cancellation upon the range of the interaction. When a symmetry breaking takes place it turns out that more iterations are required to reach the self-consistent Hartree-Fock solution, because the cancellation of the Hartree-Fock diagrams of order higher than one no longer occurs. We explore in particular the case of an explicit symmetry breaking induced by a constant, uniform magnetic field B acting on a system of neutrons. Here we compare calculations performed using either the single-particle Matsubara propagator or the zero-temperature polarization propagator, discussing under which perturbative scheme they lead to identical results (if B is not too large). We finally address the issue of the spontaneous symmetry breaking for a system of neutrons using the technique of the anomalous propagator: in this framework we recover the Stoner equation and the critical values of the interaction corresponding to a transition to a ferromagnetic phase.
