Gravitational time advancement effect in Bumblebee gravity for Earth bound systems

This paper is a novel application of the new effect of gravitational time advancement or \textit{negative} time delay, first predicted for static black holes (spin $a=0$), that can be regarded as complementary to the well known effect of positive Shapiro time delay. We shall extend the Shapiro time delay formalism up to third PPN order using the recently proposed spinning ($a\neq 0$) black hole solution of the Lorentz symmetry breaking (LSB) Bumblebee gravity that is believed to reveal signatures of quantum gravity at low energies. Adopting two practical examples of signal propagation along Earth-Moon and Earth-Satellite configurations, we shall calculate the influence of the Bumblebee parameter $\ell$ on time advancement using terms up to the second PPN order $\varpropto aM$ and $M^{2} $ as the Bumblebee solution is valid only upto first order in $a$. It is shown that there is a critical radial distance $r_{c}$ above the Earth, where the Shapiro delay vanishes, and beyond $r_{c}$ the delay becomes negative, i.e., time advancement begins to set in, leading to the intriguing consequence that the measured LLR distance to Moon or any Satellite becomes \textit{less} than the zeroth order Euclidean distance. It is shown that the LSB correction arises from the conical geometry of the massless Bumblebee spacetime leading to upper bounds on the correction to the zeroth order Euclidean time interval as $\delta \tau _{\text{LSB}}^{\text{Eucl}}<0.8\times 10^{-4}$ (ns) and to time advancement as $\Delta \tau _{\text{LSB}}^{\text{adv}}<-4.5\times 10^{-13}$ (ns), both estimates based on the bound on $\ell $ corresponding to the Cassini spacecraft experiment. We shall also briefly touch upon the feasibility of direct experimental detection of the advancement effect.

Search for gamma-ray induced showers from the lateral distribution of electrons in EAS

Distinguishing $γ$-ray and hadron initiated extensive air showers (EAS) based on lateral distribution of electrons has been studied by detailed Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. The possibility of using the local age parameter (LAP) of EAS for the gamma-hadron separation has been explored. It is found that separating $γ$-ray and hadron induced EAS on the basis of LAP can be useful for surface detector experiments those have no reliable muon measurement facilities.

Behaviour of the EAS Age Parameter in the Knee Energy Region

Analyzing simulated EAS events generated with the CORSIKA code, the characteristics of lateral distribution of electrons in EAS around the knee energy region of the primary energy spectrum have been studied and compared with experimental observations. The differences between the EGS4 and the NKG output of CORSIKA in respect to electron radial density distribution have been investigated. The relation between lateral and longitudinal age parameters has been studied after introducing the notion of the local age parameter that reflects the profile of the lateral distribution of electrons in EAS. The present analysis motivates the inclusion of the lateral shower age in a multiparameter study of EAS to extract information on hadronic interactions and primary composition.

Perfect Fluid Dark Matter

Taking the flat rotation curve as input and treating the matter content in the galactic halo region as perfect fluid, we obtain space time metric at the galactic halo region in the framework of general relativity. We find that the resultant metric is a non-relativistic-dark-matter-induced space-time embedded in a static Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universe. This means that the flat rotation curve not only leads to the existence of dark matter but also suggests the background geometry of the universe. The flat rotation curve and the demand that the dark matter be non-exotic together indicate a (nearly) flat universe as favored by the modern cosmological observations. We obtain the expressions for energy density and pressure of dark matter halo and consequently the equation of state of dark matter. Various other aspects of the solution are also analyzed.

TeV neutrinos and gamma rays from pulsars

Recent studies suggest that pulsars could be strong sources of TeV muon neutrinos provided positive ions are accelerated by pulsar polar caps to PeV energies. In such a situation muon neutrinos are produced through the delta resonance in interactions of pulsar accelerated ions with its thermal radiation field. High energy gamma rays also should be produced simultaneously in pulsar environment as both charged and neutral pions are generated in the interactions of energetic hadrons with the ambient photon fields. Here we estimate TeV gamma ray flux at Earth from few nearby young pulsars. When compared with the observations we find that proper consideration of the effect of polar cap geometry in flux calculation is important. Incorporating such an effect we obtain the (revised) event rates at Earth due to few potential nearby pulsars. The results suggest that pulsars are unlikely to be detected by the upcoming neutrino telescopes. We also estimate TeV gamma ray and neutrino fluxes from pulsar nebulae for the adopted model of particle acceleration.

Gravitational time advancement and its possible detection

The gravitational time advancement is a natural but a consequence of curve space-time geometry. In the present work the expressions of gravitational time advancement have been obtained for geodesic motions. The situation when the distance of signal travel is small in comparison to the distance of closest approach has also been considered. The possibility of experimental detection of time advancement effect has been explored.

Stability of Circular Orbits in General Relativity: A Phase Space Analysis

Phase space method provides a novel way for deducing qualitative features of nonlinear differential equations without actually solving them. The method is applied here for analyzing stability of circular orbits of test particles in various physically interesting environments. The approach is shown to work in a revealing way in Schwarzschild spacetime. All relevant conclusions about circular orbits in the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime are shown to be remarkably encoded in a single parameter. The analysis in the rotating Kerr black hole readily exposes information as to how stability depends on the ratio of source rotation to particle angular momentum. As a wider application, it is exemplified how the analysis reveals useful information when applied to motion in a refractive medium, for instance, that of optical black holes.

Comment on "On Mach's critique of Newton and Copernicus"

Hartman and Nissim-Sabat have argued that Mach's idea of the relativity of rotational motion suffers from internal inconsistencies and leads to a contradiction that there cannot be a stationary bucket in a rotating universe. They also claimed that non-inertial electromagnetic and stellar aberration observations can distinguish between a rotating and a stationary universe, whereas according to Mach there cannot be any observable way to distinguish these two cases. We contest these objections.

Brans-Dicke theory: Jordan vs Einstein Frame

It is well known that, in contrast to general relativity, there are two conformally related frames, the Jordan frame and the Einstein frame, in which the Brans-Dicke theory, a prototype of generic scalar-tensor theory, can be formulated. There is a long standing debate on the physical equivalence of the formulations in these two different frames. It is shown here that gravitational deflection of light to second order accuracy may observationally distinguish the two versions of the Brans-Dicke theory.

Contribution of a nearby Pulsar to Cosmic Rays observed at Earth

Contribution of nearby pulsars to the cosmic rays observed at Earth has been studied. It is found that the experimental bound on amplitude of cosmic ray anisotropy may produce significant constraint on the efficiency of converting pulsar rotational energy to emitted particles kinetic energy. Cosmic ray fluxes from two well known nearby gamma ray pulsars, namely the Vela and Geminga pulsars, are estimated. The analysis suggests that observed bound on cosmic ray anisotropy restricts the contributions of the Vela and the Geminga pulsars to at most 1 % of the observed cosmic rays below the knee.

Scalar Field Entropy in Brane World Black Holes

A semiclassical calculation of entropy of a scalar field in the background of a class of brane world black holes (BWBH) is carried out in the presence of a brick wall cutoff when the 5D-bulk induced \textquotedblleft tidal charge" has generic or extreme values.

Gravitational lensing by a charged black hole of string theory

We study gravitational lensing by the Gibbons-Maeda-Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger (GMGHS) charged black hole of heterotic string theory and obtain the angular position and magnification of the relativistic images. Modeling the supermassive central object of the galaxy as a GMGHS black hole, we estimate the numerical values of different strong-lensing parameters. We find that there is no significant string effect present in the lensing observables in the strong-gravity scenario.

Analog of the Fizeau Effect in an Effective Optical Medium

Using a new approach, we propose an analog of the Fizeau effect for massive and massless particles in an effective optical medium derived from the static, spherically symmetric gravitational field. The medium is naturally perceived as a dispersive medium by matter de Broglie waves. Several Fresnel drag coefficients are worked out, with appropriate interpretations of the wavelengths used. In two cases, it turns out that the coefficients become independent of the wavelength even if the equivalent medium itself is dispersive. A few conceptual issues are also addressed in the process of derivation. It is shown that some of our results complement recent works dealing with real fluid or optical black holes.

General relativity limit of the scalar-tensor theories for traceless matter field

$ω(ϕ) \to \infty$ limit of scalar tensor theories are studied for traceless matter source. It is shown that the limit $ω(ϕ) \to \infty$ does not reduce a scalar tensor theory to general relativity. An exact radiation solution of scalar tensor cosmology under Nordtvedt conditions is obtained for flat Friedmann universe.

Do Scalar Tensor Cosmologies naturally explain all the current cosmological observations ?

It is shown that the general scalar tensor cosmologies may explain all the current cosmological observations without the need of invoking any ad hoc missing energy density. The explanation is based entirely on the internal dynamics of the theories. Two important predictions of the present analysis are: the universe is tending towards a matter dominated state with the dimunition of the dark energy component and the acceleration of the universe, if any, is slowing down with time.
