Extraction of proton form factors in the timelike region from unpolarized e+e- --> p pbar events

We have performed numerical simulations of the unpolarized e+e- --> p pbar process in kinematic conditions under discussion for a possible upgrade of the existing DAFNE facility. By fitting the cross section angular distribution with a typical Born expression, we can extract information on the ratio |G_E/G_M| of the proton electromagnetic form factors in the timelike region within a 5-10% uncertainty. We have explored also non-Born contributions to the cross section by introducing a further component in the angular fit, which is related to two-photon exchange diagrams. We show that these corrections can be identified if larger than 5% of the Born contribution, and if relative phases of the complex form factors do not produce severe cancellations.

On the muon neutrino mass

During the runs of the PS 179 experiment at LEAR of CERN, we photographed an event of antiproton-Ne absorption, with a complete pi+ -> mu+ ->e+ chain. From the vertex of the reaction a very slow energy pi+ was emitted. The pi+ decays into a mu+ and subsequently the mu+ decays into a positron. At the first decay vertex a muon neutrino was emitted and at the second decay vertex an electron neutrino and a muon antineutrino. Measuring the pion and muon tracks and applying the momentum and energy conservation and using a classical statistical interval estimator, we obtained an experimental upper limit for the muon neutrino mass: m_nu < 2.2 MeV at a 90% confidence level. A statistical analysis has been performed of the factors contributing to the square value of the neutrino mass limit.

Study of temperature dependent atomic correlations in MgB$_{2}$

We have studied the evolution with temperature of the local as well as the average crystal structure of MgB$_2$ using the real-space atomic pair distribution function (PDF) measured by high resolution neutron powder diffraction. We have investigated the correlations of the B-B and B-Mg nearest neighbor pair motion by comparing, in the wide temperature range from T=10 K up to T=600 K, the mean-square displacements (MSD) of single atoms with the mean-square relative displacements (MSRD) obtained from the PDF peak linewidths. The results show that the single atom B and Mg vibrations are mostly decoupled from each other, with a small predominance of positive (in phase) correlation factor for both the B-B and B-Mg pairs. The small positive correlation is almost temperature independent, in contrast with our theoretical calculations; this can be a direct consequence of the strong decay processes of the $E_{2g}$ anharmonic phonons.

Azimuthal asymmetries in unpolarized Drell-Yan events on nuclear targets

We show that for Drell-Yan events by unpolarized hadronic projectiles and nuclear targets, azimuthal asymmetries can arise from the nuclear distortion of the hadronic projectile wave function, typically a spin-orbit effect occurring on the nuclear surface. The asymmetry depends on quantities that enter also the spin asymmetry in the corresponding Drell-Yan event on polarized free nucleonic targets. Hence, this study can be of help in exploring the spin structure of the nucleon, in particular the transverse spin distribution of partons inside the proton. All arguments can be extended also to antinucleon projectiles and, consequently, apply to possible future measurements involving nuclear targets at the foreseen HESR ring at GSI.

Monte-Carlo simulation of events with Drell-Yan lepton pairs from antiproton-proton collisions

The complete knowledge of the nucleon spin structure at leading twist requires also addressing the transverse spin distribution of quarks, or transversity, which is yet unexplored because of its chiral-odd nature. Transversity can be best extracted from single-spin asymmetries in fully polarized Drell-Yan processes with antiprotons, where valence contributions are involved anyway. Alternatively, in single-polarized Drell-Yan the transversity happens convoluted with another chiral-odd function, which is likely to be responsible for the well known (and yet unexplained) violation of the Lam-Tung sum rule in the corresponding unpolarized cross section. We present Monte-Carlo simulations for the unpolarized and single-polarized Drell-Yan $\bar{p} p^{(\uparrow)} \to μ^+ μ^- X$ at different center-of-mass energies in both configurations where the antiproton beam hits a fixed proton target or it collides on another proton beam. The goal is to estimate the minimum number of events needed to extract the above chiral-odd distributions from future measurements at the HESR ring at GSI. It is important to study the feasibility of such experiments at HESR in order to demonstrate that interesting spin physics can be explored already using unpolarized antiprotons.

Multiband superconductors close to a 3D-2D electronic topological transition

Within the two-band model of superconductivity, we study the dependence of the critical temperature Tc and of the isotope exponent alpha in the proximity to an electronic topological transition (ETT). The ETT is associated with a 3D-2D crossover of the Fermi surface of one of the two bands: the sigma subband of the diborides. Our results agree with the observed dependence of Tc on Mg content in A_{1-x}Mg_xB_2 (A=Al or Sc), where an enhancement of Tc can be interpreted as due to the proximity to a "shape resonance". Moreover we have calculated a possible variation of the isotope effect on the superconducting critical temperature by tuning the chemical potential.

Two-band Eliashberg equations and the experimental Tc of the diboride Mg1-xAlxB2

The variation of the superconducting critical temperature Tc as a function of x in the diboride Mg1-xAlxB2 has been studied in the framework of the two-bands Eliashberg theory and traditional phonon coupling mechanism. We have solved the two-bands Eliashberg equations using first-principle calculations or simple assumptions for the variation of the relevant physical quantities. We have found that the experimental Tc curve can be explained only if the Coulomb pseudopotential changes with x by tuning the Fermi level toward the sigma band edge. In polycrystal samples the x dependence of the sigma and pi-band gap has been found and is in agreement with experiments.

Sc substitution for Mg in MgB2: effects on Tc and Kohn anomaly

Here we report synthesis and characterization of Mg_{1-x}Sc_{x}B_{2} (0.12 T_{c}>6 K. We find that the Sc doping moves the chemical potential through the 2D/3D electronic topological transition (ETT) in the sigma band where the ``shape resonance" of interband pairing occurs. In the 3D regime beyond the ETT we observe a hardening of the E_{2g} Raman mode with a significant line-width narrowing due to suppression of the Kohn anomaly over the range 0<q<2k_{F}.

High Tc superconductivity at a critical strain and charge density in diborides

We report variation of lattice structure in diborides (AB2) with different A atoms to identify the special case of MgB2 showing high Tc superconductivity. High purity MgB2 (Tc~39 K) has been prepared by direct reaction of the elements and the lattice parameters are measured by x-ray diffraction determining the strain e of the B-B distance. The results show that the superconductivity in these intermetallics appear near a critical point in a two variables (strain and charge density) phase diagram at (ec, rc).

Optical conductivity of the nonsuperconducting cuprate La(8-x)Sr(x)Cu(8)O(20)

La(8-x)Sr(x)Cu(8)O(20) is a non-superconducting cuprate, which exhibits a doubling of the elementary cell along the c axis. Its optical conductivity sigma (omega) has been first measured here, down to 20 K, in two single crystals with x = 1.56 and x = 2.24. Along c, sigma (omega) shows, in both samples, bands due to strongly bound charges, thus confirming that the cell doubling is due to charge ordering. In the ab plane, in addition to the Drude term one observes an infrared peak at 0.1 eV and a midinfrared band at 0.7 eV. The 0.1 eV peak hardens considerably below 200 K, in correspondence of an anomalous increase in the sample dc resistivity, in agreement with its polaronic origin. This study allows one to establish relevant similarities and differences with respect to the spectrum of the ab plane of the superconducting cuprates.

Accessing transversity with interference fragmentation functions

We discuss in detail the option to access the transversity distribution function $h_1(x)$ by utilizing the analyzing power of interference fragmentation functions in two-pion production inside the same current jet. The transverse polarization of the fragmenting quark is related to the transverse component of the relative momentum of the hadron pair via a new azimuthal angle. As a specific example, we spell out thoroughly the way to extract $h_1(x)$ from a measured single spin asymmetry in two-pion inclusive lepton-nucleon scattering. To estimate the sizes of observable effects we employ a spectator model for the fragmentation functions. The resulting asymmetry of our example is discussed as arising in different scenarios for the transversity.

Effect of Al doping on the optical phonon spectrum in Mg(1-x)Al(x)B(2)

Raman and infrared absorption spectra of Mg(1-x)Al(x)B(2) have been collected for 0<x<0.5 in the spectral range of optical phonons. The x-dependence of the peak frequency, the width and the intensity of the observed Raman lines has been carefully analized. A peculiar x-dependence of the optical modes is pointed out for two different Al doping ranges. In particular the onset of the high-doping structural phase previously observed in diffraction measurements is marked by the appearence of new spectral components at high frequencies. A connection between the whole of our results and the observed suppression of superconductivity in the high doping region is established.

A Superconductor Made by a Metal Heterostructure at the Atomic Limit Tuned at the "Shape Resonance": MgB2

We have studied the variation of Tc with charge density and lattice parameters in Mg1-xAlxB2 superconducting samples at low Al doping x<8%. We show that high Tc occurs where the chemical potential is tuned at a "superconducting shape resonance" near the energy Ec of the quantum critical point (QCP) for the dimensional transition from 2D to 3D electronic structure in a particular subband of the natural superlattice of metallic atomic boron layers. At the "shape resonance" the electrons pairs see a 2D Fermi surface at EF-w0 and a 3D Fermi surface at EF+wo, where wo is the energy cut off of the pairing interaction. The resonant amplification occurs in a narrow energy range where EF-Ec is in the range of 2wo.

Thermal conductivity of superconducting MgB2

Thermal conductivity of superconducting MgB2 was studied in both the superconducting and the normal state region. The latter is almost equally determined by the electronic - and the lattice contribution to the total thermal conductivity. In the superconducting state, however, the lattice contribution is larger. The electronic thermal conductivity below Tc was derived from the experimental data considering the Bardeen-Rickayzen-Tewordt theory together with the model of Geilikman. The analysis shows that electron scattering on static imperfections dominates.

Calculation of fragmentation functions in two-hadron semi-inclusive processes

We investigate the properties of interference fragmentation functions arising from the emission of two leading hadrons inside the same jet for inclusive lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering. Using an extended spectator model for the mechanism of the hadronization, we give a complete calculation and numerical estimates for the examples of a proton-pion pair produced with invariant mass on the Roper resonance, and of two pions produced with invariant mass close to the $ρ$ mass. We discuss azimuthal angular dependence of the leading order cross section to point up favourable conditions for extracting transversity from experimental data.

On the different role of protons and neutrons in antinucleon annihilations on nuclei

We compare data of antineutron and antiproton annihilation cross sections on different targets at very low energies. After subtracting Coulomb effects, we observe that the ratio between the antineutron proton and antiproton proton annihilation cross sections is an oscillating function of the energy at momenta smaller 300 MeV/c. This nontrivial behavior is confirmed by the analysis of the relative number of antiproton-neutron and antiproton-proton annihilations in nuclei. We show that a part of the strong shadowing phenomena in antiproton-nucleus annihilations can be explained in terms of this oscillation, while a part requires different explainations.

Limits on the low energy antinucleon-nucleus annihilations from the Heisenberg principle

We show that the quantum uncertainty principle puts some limits on the effectiveness of the antinucleon-nucleus annihilation at very low energies. This is caused by the fact that the realization a very effective short-distance reaction process implies information on the relative distance of the reacting particles. Some quantitative predictions are possible on this ground, including the approximate A-independence of antinucleon-nucleus annihilation rates.
