Investigating field-induced magnetic order in Han Purple by neutron scattering up to 25.9 T

BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ is a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) quantum antiferromagnet containing three different types of stacked, square-lattice bilayer hosting spin-1/2 dimers. Although this compound has been studied extensively over the last two decades, the critical applied magnetic field required to close the dimer spin gap and induce magnetic order, which exceeds 23 T, has to date precluded any kind of neutron scattering investigation. However, the HFM/EXED instrument at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin made this possible at magnetic fields up to 25.9 T. Thus we have used HFM/EXED to investigate the field-induced ordered phase, in particular to look for quasi-2D physics arising from the layered structure and from the different bilayer types. From neutron diffraction data, we determined the global dependence of the magnetic order parameter on both magnetic field and temperature, finding a form consistent with 3D quantum critical scaling; from this we deduce that the quasi-2D interactions and nonuniform layering of BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ are not anisotropic enough to induce hallmarks of 2D physics. From neutron spectroscopy data, we measured the dispersion of the strongly Zeeman-split magnetic excitations, finding good agreement with the zero-field interaction parameters of BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$. We conclude that HFM/EXED allowed a significant extension in the application of neutron scattering techniques to the field range above 20 T and in particular opened new horizons in the study of field-induced magnetic quantum phase transitions.

Multiple Magnetic Bilayers and Unconventional Criticality without Frustration in BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$

The dimerized quantum magnet BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ was proposed as an example of "dimensional reduction" arising near the magnetic-field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) due to perfect geometrical frustration of its inter-bilayer interactions. We demonstrate by high-resolution neutron spectroscopy experiments that the effective intra-bilayer interactions are ferromagnetic, thereby excluding frustration. We explain the apparent dimensional reduction by establishing the presence of three magnetically inequivalent bilayers, with ratios 3:2:1, whose differing interaction parameters create an extra field-temperature scaling regime near the QCP with a non-trivial but non-universal exponent. We demonstrate by detailed quantum Monte Carlo simulations that the magnetic interaction parameters we deduce can account for all the measured properties of BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$, opening the way to a quantitative understanding of non-universal scaling in any modulated layered system.

Observation of two types of anyons in the Kitaev honeycomb magnet

Quantum spin liquid is a disordered magnetic state with fractional spin excitations. Its clearest example is found in an exactly solved Kitaev honeycomb model where a spin flip fractionalizes into two types of anyons, quasiparticles that are neither fermions nor bosons: a pair of gauge fluxes and a Majorana fermion. Here we demonstrate this kind of fractionalization in the Kitaev paramagnetic state of the honeycomb magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$. The spin-excitation gap measured by nuclear magnetic resonance consists of the predicted Majorana fermion contribution following the cube of the applied magnetic field, and a finite zero-field contribution matching the predicted size of the gauge-flux gap. The observed fractionalization into gapped anyons survives in a broad range of temperatures and magnetic fields despite inevitable non-Kitaev interactions between the spins, which are predicted to drive the system towards a gapless ground state. The gapped character of both anyons is crucial for their potential application in topological quantum computing.

Magnetic field dependence of excitations near spin-orbital quantum criticality

The spinel FeSc$_2$S$_4$ has been proposed to realize a near-critical spin-orbital singlet (SOS) state, where entangled spin and orbital moments fluctuate in a global singlet state on the verge of spin and orbital order. Here we report powder inelastic neutron scattering measurements that observe the full bandwidth of magnetic excitations and we find that spin-orbital triplon excitations of an SOS state can capture well key aspects of the spectrum in both zero and applied magnetic fields up to 8.5 T. The observed shift of low-energy spectral weight to higher energies upon increasing applied field is naturally explained by the entangled spin-orbital character of the magnetic states, a behavior that is in strong contrast to spin-only singlet ground state systems, where the spin gap decreases upon increasing applied field.

Unconventional magnetic order on the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev lattice in $β$-Li2IrO3: full solution via magnetic resonant x-ray diffraction

The recently-synthesized iridate $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ has been proposed as a candidate to display novel magnetic behavior stabilized by frustration effects from bond-dependent, anisotropic interactions (Kitaev model) on a three-dimensional "hyperhoneycomb" lattice. Here we report a combined study using neutron powder diffraction and magnetic resonant x-ray diffraction to solve the complete magnetic structure. We find a complex, incommensurate magnetic order with non-coplanar and counter-rotating Ir moments, which surprisingly shares many of its features with the related structural polytype "stripyhoneycomb" $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, where dominant Kitaev interactions have been invoked to explain the stability of the observed magnetic structure. The similarities of behavior between those two structural polytypes, which have different global lattice topologies but the same local connectivity, is strongly suggestive that the same magnetic interactions and the same underlying mechanism governs the stability of the magnetic order in both materials, indicating that both $β$- and $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ are strong candidates to realize dominant Kitaev interactions in a solid state material.

Non-coplanar and counter-rotating incommensurate magnetic order stabilized by Kitaev interactions in $γ$-Li2IrO3

Materials that realize Kitaev spin models with bond-dependent anisotropic interactions have long been searched for, as the resulting frustration effects are predicted to stabilize novel forms of magnetic order or quantum spin liquids. Here we explore the magnetism of $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, which has the topology of a 3D Kitaev lattice of inter-connected Ir honeycombs. Using resonant magnetic x-ray diffraction we find a complex, yet highly-symmetric incommensurate magnetic structure with non-coplanar and counter-rotating Ir moments. We propose a minimal Kitaev-Heisenberg Hamiltonian that naturally accounts for all key features of the observed magnetic structure. Our results provide strong evidence that $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ realizes a spin Hamiltonian with dominant Kitaev interactions.
