Thermalization in the one-dimensional Salerno model lattice

The Salerno model constitutes an intriguing interpolation between the integrable Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) model and the more standard (non-integrable) discrete nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (DNLS) one. The competition of local on-site nonlinearity and nonlinear dispersion governs the thermalization of this model. Here, we investigate the statistical mechanics of the Salerno one-dimensional lattice model in the nonintegrable case and illustrate the thermalization in the Gibbs regime. As the parameter interpolating between the two limits (from DNLS towards AL) is varied, the region in the space of initial energy and norm-densities leading to thermalization expands. The thermalization in the non-Gibbs regime heavily depends on the finite system size; we explore this feature via direct numerical computations for different parametric regimes.

Consistent Approximation of Epidemic Dynamics on Degree-heterogeneous Clustered Networks

Realistic human contact networks capable of spreading infectious disease, for example studied in social contact surveys, exhibit both significant degree heterogeneity and clustering, both of which greatly affect epidemic dynamics. To understand the joint effects of these two network properties on epidemic dynamics, the effective degree model of Lindquist et al. is reformulated with a new moment closure to apply to highly clustered networks. A simulation study comparing alternative ODE models and stochastic simulations is performed for SIR (Susceptible-Infected-Removed) epidemic dynamics, including a test for the conjectured error behaviour in Pellis et al., providing evidence that this novel model can be a more accurate approximation to epidemic dynamics on complex networks than existing approaches.

Cloud Scheduler: a resource manager for distributed compute clouds

The availability of Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) computing clouds gives researchers access to a large set of new resources for running complex scientific applications. However, exploiting cloud resources for large numbers of jobs requires significant effort and expertise. In order to make it simple and transparent for researchers to deploy their applications, we have developed a virtual machine resource manager (Cloud Scheduler) for distributed compute clouds. Cloud Scheduler boots and manages the user-customized virtual machines in response to a user's job submission. We describe the motivation and design of the Cloud Scheduler and present results on its use on both science and commercial clouds.

Bistability and Hysteresis in the Sliding Friction of a Dimer

The sliding friction of a dimer moving over a periodic substrate and subjected to an external force is studied in the steady state for arbitrary temperatures within a one-dimensional model. Nonlinear phenomena that emerge include dynamic bistability and hysteresis, and can be related to earlier observations for extended systems such as the Frenkel-Kontorova model. Several observed features can be satisfactorily explained in terms of the resonance of a driven-damped nonlinear oscillator. Increasing temperature tends to lower the resonant peak and wash out the hysteresis.
