Selections and their Absolutely Continuous Invariant Measures

Let $I=[0,1]$ and consider disjoint closed regions $G_{1},....,G_{n}$ in $% I\times I$ and subintervals $I_{1},......,I_{n},$ such that $G_{i}$ projects onto $I_{i.}$ We define the lower and upper maps $τ_{1},$ $τ_{2}$ by the lower and upper boundaries of $G_{i},i=1,....,n,$ respectively. We assume $τ_{1}$, $τ_{2}$ to be piecewise monotonic and preserving continuous invariant measures $μ_{1}$ and $μ_{2}$, respectively. Let $% F^{(1)}$ and $F^{(2)}$ be the distribution functions of $μ_{1}$ and $μ_{2}.$ The main results shows that for any convex combination $F$ of $% F^{(1)} $ and $F^{(2)}$ we can find a map $η$ with values between the graphs of $τ_{1}$ and $τ_{2}$ (that is, a selection) such that $F$ is the $η$-invariant distribution function. Examples are presented. We also study the relationship of the dynamics of multi-valued maps to random maps.

ORIGIN: Metal Creation and Evolution from the Cosmic Dawn

ORIGIN is a proposal for the M3 mission call of ESA aimed at the study of metal creation from the epoch of cosmic dawn. Using high-spectral resolution in the soft X-ray band, ORIGIN will be able to identify the physical conditions of all abundant elements between C and Ni to red-shifts of z=10, and beyond. The mission will answer questions such as: When were the first metals created? How does the cosmic metal content evolve? Where do most of the metals reside in the Universe? What is the role of metals in structure formation and evolution? To reach out to the early Universe ORIGIN will use Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) to study their local environments in their host galaxies. This requires the capability to slew the satellite in less than a minute to the GRB location. By studying the chemical composition and properties of clusters of galaxies we can extend the range of exploration to lower redshifts (z ~ 0.2). For this task we need a high-resolution spectral imaging instrument with a large field of view. Using the same instrument, we can also study the so far only partially detected baryons in the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM). The less dense part of the WHIM will be studied using absorption lines at low redshift in the spectra for GRBs.

The search for decaying Dark Matter

We propose an X-ray mission called Xenia to search for decaying superweakly interacting Dark Matter particles (super-WIMP) with a mass in the keV range. The mission and its observation plan are capable of providing a major break through in our understanding of the nature of Dark Matter (DM). It will confirm, or reject, predictions of a number of particle physics models by increasing the sensitivity of the search for decaying DM by about two orders of magnitude through a wide-field imaging X-ray spectrometer in combination with a dedicated observation program. The proposed mission will provide unique limits on the mixing angle and mass of neutral leptons, right handed partners of neutrinos, which are important Dark Matter candidates. The existence of these particles is strongly motivated by observed neutrino flavor oscillations and the problem of baryon asymmetry of the Universe. In super-WIMP models, the details of the formation of the cosmic web are different from those of LambdaCDM. The proposed mission will, in addition to the search for decaying Dark Matter, provide crucial insight into the nature of DM by studying the structure of the "cosmic web". This will be done by searching for missing baryons in emission, and by using gamma-ray bursts as backlight to observe the warm-hot intergalactic media in absorption.

The Measurement of Time

We present a definition of time measurement based on high energy photons and the fundamental length scale, and show that, for macroscopic time, it is in accord with the Lorentz transformation of special relativity. To do this we define observer in a different way than in special relativity.

Axion alternatives

If recent results of the PVLAS collaboration proved to be correct, some alternative to the traditional axion models are needed. We present one of the simplest possible modifications of axion paradigm, which explains the results of PVLAS experiment, while avoiding all the astrophysical and cosmological restrictions. We also mention other possible models that possess similar effects.

Where to find a dark matter sterile neutrino?

We propose a strategy of how to look for dark matter (DM) particles possessing a radiative decay channel and derive constraints on their parameters from observations of X-rays from our own Galaxy and its dwarf satellites. When applied to the sterile neutrinos in keV mass range, it allows a significant improvement of restrictions to its parameters, as compared with previous works.

On the Mechanism of Hawking Radiation

In this paper we derived Hawking radiation as a tuneling of massless particles through a non-singular horizon in the s-wave approximation. The back reaction of emitted modes on the background black hole geometry is self-consistently taken into account. This is arXive copy of the paper published in the Russian journal "Gravitation and Cosmology" in 1999.

Constraints on sterile neutrino as a dark matter candidate from the diffuse X-ray background

Sterile neutrinos with masses in the keV range are viable candidates for the warm dark matter. We analyze existing data for the extragalactic diffuse X-ray background for signatures of sterile neutrino decay. The absence of detectable signal within current uncertainties of background measurements puts model-independent constraints on allowed values of sterile neutrino mass and mixing angle, which we present in this work.

The masses of active neutrinos in the nuMSM from X-ray astronomy

In an extention of the Standard Model by three relatively light right-handed neutrinos (the nuMSM model) the role of the dark matter particle is played by the lightest sterile neutrino. We demonstrate that the observations of the extragalactic X-ray background allow to put a strong upper bound on the mass of the lightest active neutrino and predict the absolute values of the mass of the two heavier active neutrinos in the nuMSM, provided that the mass of the dark matter sterile neutrino is larger than 1.8 keV.

Quantum cosmology of the brane universe

We canonically quantize the dynamics of the brane universe embedded into the five-dimensional Schwarzschild-anti-deSitter bulk space-time. We show that in the brane-world settings the formulation of the quantum cosmology, including the problem of initial conditions, is conceptually more simple than in the 3+1-dimensional case. The Wheeler-deWitt equation is a finite-difference equation. It is exactly solvable in the case of a flat universe and we find the ground state of the system. The closed brane universe can be created as a result of decay of the bulk black hole.

Microscopic construction of the chiral Luttinger liquid theory of the quantum Hall edge

We give a microscopic derivation of the chiral Luttinger liquid theory for the Laughlin states. Starting from the wave function describing an arbitrary incompressibly deformed Laughlin state (IDLS) we quantize these deformations. In this way we obtain the low-energy projections of local microscopic operators and derive the quantum field theory of edge excitations directly from quantum mechanics of electrons. This shows that to describe experimental and numeric deviations from chiral Luttinger liquid theory one needs to go beyond Laughlin's approximation. We show that in the large N limit the IDLS is described by the dispersionless Toda hierarchy.

String Field Theory Vertices, Integrability and Boundary States

We study Neumann coefficients of the various vertices in the Witten's open string field theory (SFT). We show that they are not independent, but satisfy an infinite set of algebraic relations. These relations are identified as so-called Hirota identities. Therefore, Neumann coefficients are equal to the second derivatives of tau-function of dispersionless Toda Lattice hierarchy (this tau-function is just the partition sum of normal matrix model). As a result, certain two-vertices of SFT are identified with the boundary states, corresponding to boundary conditions on an arbitrary curve. Such two-vertices can be obtained by the contraction of special surface states with Witten's three vertex. We analyze a class of SFT surface states, which give rise to boundary states under this procedure. We conjecture that these special states can be considered as describing D-branes and other non-perturbative objects as "solitons" in SFT. We consider some explicit examples, one of them is a surface states corresponding to orientifold.

Microscopic Space Dimensions and the Discreteness of Time

We present a simple dynamical systems model for the effect of invisible space dimensions on the visible ones. There are three premises. A: Orbits consist of flows of probabilities [P].which is the case in the setting of quantum mechanics. B: The orbits of probabilities are induced by (continuous time) differential or partial differential equations. C: Observable orbit are flow of marginal probabilities where the invisible space variables are averaged out. A theorem is presented which proves that under certain general conditions the transfer of marginal probabilities cannot be achieved by continuous time dynamical systems acting on the space of observable variables but that it can be achieved by discrete time dynamical systems.

Brane-Bulk Interaction in Topological Theory

In this letter we address the problem of inducing boundary degrees of freedom from a bulk theory whose action contains higher-derivative corrections. As a model example we consider a topological theory with an action that has only a ``higher-derivative'' term. By choosing specific coupling of the brane to the bulk we show that the boundary action contains gravity action along with some higher-derivative corrections. The co-dimension of the brane is more than one. In this sense the boundary is singular.

A note on the M5 brane anomaly

The problem of the M5 brane anomaly cancellation is addressed. We reformulate FHMM construction making explicit the relation with the M5 brane SUGRA solution. We suggest another solution to the magnetic coupling equation which doesn't need anomalous SO(5) variation of the 3-form potential and coincides with the SUGRA solution outside smoothed out core of the magnetic source. Chern-Simons term evaluated on this solution generates the same anomaly inflow as achieved by FHMM.

On Associativity Equations in Dispersionless Integrable Hierarchies

We discuss the origin of the associativity (WDVV) equations in the context of quasiclassical or Whitham hierarchies. The associativity equations are shown to be encoded in the dispersionless limit of the Hirota equations for KP and Toda hierarchies. We show, therefore, that any tau-function of dispersionless KP or Toda hierarchy provides a solution to associativity equations. In general, they depend on infinitely many variables. We also discuss the particular solution to the dispersionless Toda hierarchy that describes conformal mappings and construct a family of new solutions to the WDVV equations depending on finite number of variables.
