Braiding and asymptotic Schur's orthogonality

Let $\pi:G\to U(\mathcal H)$ be a unitary representation of a locally compact group. The braiding operator $F:\mathcal H\otimes\mathcal H\to \mathcal H\otimes\mathcal H$, which flips the components of the Hilbert tensor product $F(v\otimes w)=w\otimes v$, belongs to the von Neumann algebra $W^*((\pi\otimes\pi)(G\times G))$ if and only if $\pi$ is irreducible. Suppose $G$ is semisimple over a local field. If $G$ is non-compact with finite center, $P<G$ is a minimal parabolic, $\pi:G\to U(L^2(G/P))$ is the quasi-regular representation, then \[ \lim_{n\to\infty}\frac{1}{\int_{B_n}\Xi(g)^2dg}\int_{B_n}\pi(g)\otimes\pi(g^{-1})dg=F, \] in the weak operator topology, where $\Xi$ is the Harish-Chandra function of $G$ and $B_n$ is the ball of radius $n$ around the identity defined by a natural length function on $G$.

Test of lepton universality in beauty-quark decays

The Standard Model of particle physics currently provides our best description of fundamental particles and their interactions. The theory predicts that the different charged leptons, the electron, muon and tau, have identical electroweak interaction strengths. Previous measurements have shown a wide range of particle decays are consistent with this principle of lepton universality. This article presents evidence for the breaking of lepton universality in beauty-quark decays, with a significance of 3.1 standard deviations, based on proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are of processes in which a beauty meson transforms into a strange meson with the emission of either an electron and a positron, or a muon and an antimuon. If confirmed by future measurements, this violation of lepton universality would imply physics beyond the Standard Model, such as a new fundamental interaction between quarks and leptons.

Attosecond metrology of 2D charge distribution in molecules

Photoionization as a half-scattering process is not instantaneous. Usually, time delays in photoionization are of the order of few tens of attoseconds (1 as = 10$^{-18}$ s). While going from a single atom to a nano-object, one can expect the delay to increase since the photoelectron scatters over a larger distance. Here, we show that this is no longer valid in the case of planar systems. Using attosecond interferometry, we find that the time delay in a 2D carbon-based molecule, naphthalene, is significantly smaller compared to its 3D diamond-like counterpart, adamantane. The measured time delay carries the signature of the spatial distribution of the hole created in the residual molecular cation, allowing us to obtain its dimensions with angstrom accuracy. Our findings offer novel opportunities for tracking and manipulating ultrafast charge transport in molecular materials.

Measurement of the nuclear modification factor and prompt charged particle production in $p\mathrm{Pb}$ and $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle\mathrm{NN}}}=5\,\mathrm{TeV}$

The production of prompt charged particles in proton-lead collisions and in proton-proton collisions at the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy ${\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle\mathrm{NN}}}=5\,\mathrm{TeV}}$ is studied at LHCb as a function of pseudorapidity ($η$) and transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm{T}}$) with respect to the proton beam direction. The nuclear modification factor for charged particles is determined as a function of $η$ between ${-4.8<η<-2.5}$ (backward region) and ${2.0<η<4.8}$ (forward region), and $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ between ${0.2<p_{\mathrm{T}}<8.0\,\mathrm{GeV}/c}$. The results show a suppression of charged particle production in proton-lead collisions relative to proton-proton collisions in the forward region and an enhancement in the backward region for $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ larger than $1.5\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$. This measurement constrains nuclear PDFs and saturation models at previously unexplored values of the parton momentum fraction down to $10^{-6}$.

$J/ψ$ photo-production in Pb-Pb peripheral collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5 TeV

The photo-production of $J/ψ$ mesons at low transverse momentum is studied in peripheral lead-lead collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 210 $\rm{μb}^{-1}$. The $J/ψ$ candidates are reconstructed through the prompt decay into two muons of opposite charge in the rapidity region of $2.0<y<4.5$. The results significantly improve previous measurements and are compared to the latest theoretical prediction.

Measurement of prompt charged-particle production in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV

The differential cross-section of prompt inclusive production of long-lived charged particles in proton-proton collisions is measured using a data sample recorded by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of ${\sqrt{s} = 13\,\mathrm{TeV}}$. The data sample, collected with an unbiased trigger, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of ${5.4\,\mathrm{nb}^{-1}}$. The differential cross-section is measured as a function of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity in the ranges ${p_\mathrm{T} \in [0.08, 10)\,\mathrm{GeV}\,c^{-1}}$ and ${η\in [2.0, 4.8)}$ and is determined separately for positively and negatively charged particles. The results are compared with predictions from various hadronic-interaction models.

Analysis of neutral $B$-meson decays into two muons

Branching fraction and effective lifetime measurements of the rare decay $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ and searches for the decays $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ$ are reported using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of $7$ TeV, $8$ TeV and $13$ TeV, corresponding to a luminosity of $9$ fb$^{-1}$. The branching fraction ${\mathcal{B}}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=\left(3.09^{+0.46+0.15}_{-0.43-0.11}\right)\times 10^{-9}$ and the effective lifetime $τ(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=(2.07\pm 0.29\pm 0.03)$ are measured, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. No significant signal for $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ$ decays is found and upper limits $\mathcal{B}(B^0\toμ^+μ^-)<2.6\times 10^{-10}$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ)<2.0\times 10^{-9}$ at the 95% CL are determined, where the latter is limited to the range $m_{μμ} > 4.9$ GeV$/c^2$. The results are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations.

Probing for high momentum protons in $^4$He via the $^4He(e,e'p)X$ reaction

Experimental cross sections for the $^4He(e,e'p)X$ reaction up to a missing momentum of 0.632 GeV/$c$ at $x_B=1.24$ and $Q^2$=2(GeV/$c$)$^2$ are reported. The data are compared to Relativistic Distorted Wave Impulse Approximation(RDWIA) calculations for $^4He(e,e'p)^3H$ channel. Significantly more events in the triton mass region are measured for $p_{m}$$>$0.45 GeV/$c$ than are predicted by the theoretical model, suggesting that the effects of initial-state multi-nucleon correlations are stronger than expected by the RDWIA model.

Precise determination of the B0s-B0sbar oscillation frequency

Mesons comprising a beauty quark and a strange quark can oscillate between particle (B0s) and antiparticle (B0s) flavour eigenstates, with a frequency given by the mass difference between heavy and light mass eigenstates, deltams. Here we present ameasurement of deltams using B0s2DsPi decays produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The oscillation frequency is found to be deltams = 17.7683 +- 0.0051 +- 0.0032 ps-1, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This measurement improves upon the current deltams precision by a factor of two. We combine this result with previous LHCb measurements to determine deltams = 17.7656 +- 0.0057 ps-1, which is the legacy measurement of the original LHCb detector.

Measurement of the $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ decay properties and search for the $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ$ decays

An improved measurement of the decay $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ and searches for the decays $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ$ are performed at the LHCb experiment using data collected in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7,~8$ and $13$ TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1, 2 and 6 fb$^{-1}$, respectively. The $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ branching fraction and effective lifetime are measured to be ${\mathcal{B}}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=\left(3.09^{+0.46+0.15}_{-0.43-0.11}\right)\times 10^{-9}$ and $τ(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=(2.07\pm 0.29\pm 0.03)$ ps, respectively, where the uncertainties include both statistical and systematic contributions. No significant signal for $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ$ decays is found and the upper limits $\mathcal{B}(B^0\toμ^+μ^-)<2.6\times 10^{-10}$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ)<2.0\times 10^{-9}$ at 95% confidence level are determined, where the latter is limited to the range $m_{μμ} > 4.9$ GeV$/c^2$. Additionally, the ratio between the $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ branching fractions is measured to be $\mathcal{R}_{μ^+μ^-}<0.095$ at 95% confidence level. The results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions.

Observation of excited $Ω_c^0$ baryons in $Ω_b^- \to Ξ_c^+ K^-π^-$ decays

The first observation of the $Ω_b^- \to Ξ_c^+ K^- π^-$ decay is reported using $pp$ collision data at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13\,$\mathrm{TeV}$ collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9\,$\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. Four excited $Ω_c^0$ baryons are observed in the $Ξ_c^+ K^-$ mass projection of the $Ω_b^- \to Ξ_c^+ K^- π^-$ decays with the significance of each exceeding five standard deviations. They coincide with the states previously observed in prompt \proton\proton and $e^+e^-$ production. Relative production rates, masses and natural widths of the states are measured, and a test of spin hypotheses is performed. Moreover, the branching ratio of $Ω_b^- \to Ξ_c^+ K^- π^-$ is measured relative to the $Ω_b^- \to Ω_c^0 π^-$ decay mode and a precise measurement of the $Ω_b^-$ mass of \mbox{$6044.3 \pm 1.2 \pm 1.1^{\,+0.19}_{\,-0.22}\,\mathrm{MeV}$} is obtained.

Centrality determination in heavy-ion collisions with the LHCb detector

The centrality of heavy-ion collisions is directly related to the medium created therein. A procedure to determine the centrality of collisions with the LHCb detector is implemented for lead-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle\text{NN}}}=5\, \mathrm{TeV}$ and lead-neon fixed-target collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle\text{NN}}}=69\, \mathrm{GeV}$. The energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter are used to determine and define the centrality classes. The correspondence between the number of participants and the centrality for the lead-lead collisions is in good agreement with the correspondence found in other experiments, and the centrality measurements for the lead-neon collisions presented here are the first performed in fixed-target collisions at the LHC.

Search for time-dependent $CP$ violation in $D^0 \to K^+ K^-$ and $D^0 \to π^+ π^-$ decays

A search for time-dependent violation of the charge-parity symmetry in $D^0 \to K^+ K^-$ and $D^0 \to π^+ π^-$ decays is performed at the LHCb experiment using proton-proton collision data recorded from 2015 to 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb$^{-1}$. The $D^0$ meson is required to originate from a $D^*(2010)^+ \to D^0 π^+$ decay, such that its flavour at production is identified by the charge of the accompanying pion. The slope of the time-dependent asymmetry of the decay rates of $D^0$ and $\bar{D}^0$ mesons into the final states under consideration is measured to be $ΔY_{K^+ K^-} = (-2.3 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{-4}$, $ΔY_{π^+ π^-} = (-4.0 \pm 2.8 \pm 0.4)\times 10^{-4}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are compatible with the conservation of the charge-parity symmetry at the level of 2 standard deviations and improve the precision by nearly a factor of two.

Search for the doubly charmed baryon $\itΩ_{cc}^{+}$

A search for the doubly charmed baryon $\itΩ_{cc}^{+}$ with the decay mode $\itΩ_{cc}^{+}\to\itΞ_c^{+}K^{-}π^{+}$ is performed using proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13$\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$ collected by the LHCb experiment from 2016 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. No significant signal is observed within the invariant mass range of 3.6 to 4.0$\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c^2$. Upper limits are set on the ratio $R$ of the production cross-section times the total branching fraction of the $\itΩ_{cc}^{+}\to\itΞ_c^{+}K^{-}π^{+}$ decay with respect to the $\itΞ_{cc}^{++}\to\itΛ_c^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{+}$ decay. Upper limits at 95% credibility level for $R$ in the range $0.005$ to $0.11$ are obtained for different hypotheses on the $\itΩ_{cc}^{+}$ mass and lifetime in the rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and transverse momentum range from 4 to 15$\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c$.

Branching fraction measurements of the rare $B^0_s\rightarrowϕμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0_s\rightarrow f_2^\prime(1525)μ^+μ^-$ decays

The branching fraction of the rare $B^0_s\rightarrowϕμ^+μ^-$ decay is measured using data collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of $7$, $8$ and $13\,\rm{TeV}$, corresponding to integrated luminosities of $1$, $2$ and $6\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$, respectively. The branching fraction is reported in intervals of $q^2$, the square of the dimuon invariant mass. In the $q^2$ region between $1.1$ and $6.0\,{\rm Ge\kern -0.1em V}^2\!/c^4$, the measurement is found to lie $3.6$ standard deviations below a Standard Model prediction based on a combination of Light Cone Sum Rule and Lattice QCD calculations. In addition, the first observation of the rare $B^0_s\rightarrow f_2^\prime(1525)μ^+μ^-$ decay is reported with a statistical significance of nine standard deviations and its branching fraction is determined.

Search for $CP$ violation in $Ξ_b^- \to p K^- K^-$ decays

A search for $CP$ violation in charmless three-body $Ξ_b^- \to p K^- K^-$ decays is performed using $pp$ collision data recorded with the LHCb detector, corresponding to integrated luminosities of $1\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 7\,\text{TeV}$, $2\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 8\,\text{TeV}$ and $2\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text{TeV}$. A good description of the phase-space distribution is obtained with an amplitude model containing contributions from $Σ(1385)$, $Λ(1405)$, $Λ(1520)$, $Λ(1670)$, $Σ(1775)$ and $Σ(1915)$ resonances. The model allows for $CP$-violation effects, which are found to be consistent with zero. The branching fractions of $Ξ_b^- \to Σ(1385) K^-$, $Ξ_b^- \to Λ(1405) K^-$, $Ξ_b^- \to Λ(1520) K^-$, $Ξ_b^- \to Λ(1670) K^-$, $Ξ_b^- \to Σ(1775) K^-$ and $Ξ_b^- \to Σ(1915) K^-$ decays are also reported. In addition, an upper limit is placed on the product of ratios of $Ω_b^-$ and $Ξ_b^-$ fragmentation fractions and the $Ω_b^- \to p K^- K^-$ and $Ξ_b^- \to p K^- K^-$ branching fractions.

Measurement of $CP$ asymmetry in $D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S$ decays

A measurement of the $CP$ asymmetry in $D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S$ decays is reported, based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment from 2015 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb$^{-1}$. The flavor of the $D^0$ candidate is determined using the charge of the $D^{*\pm}$ meson, from which the decay is required to originate. The $D^0 \to K^+ K^-$ decay is used as a calibration channel. The time-integrated $CP$ asymmetry for the $D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S$ mode is measured to be: $$A^{CP}(D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S) = (-3.1\pm 1.2\pm 0.4 \pm 0.2)\%, $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainty on the $CP$ asymmetry of the calibration channel. This is the most precise determination of this quantity to date.

Observation of new resonances decaying to $J/ψK^+$ and $J/ψϕ$

The first observation of exotic states with a new quark content $c \bar{c} u \bar{s}$ decaying to the $J/ψK^+$ final state is reported with high significance from an amplitude analysis of the $B^+ \to J/ψϕK^+$ decay. The analysis is carried out using proton-proton collision data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The most significant state, $Z_{cs}(4000)^+$, has a mass of $4003\pm6\,^{+\,\phantom{0}4}_{-\,14}$ MeV, a width of $131\pm15\pm26$ MeV, and spin-parity $J^P=1^+$, where the quoted uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. A new $1^+$ $X(4685)$ state decaying to the $J/ψϕ$ final state is also observed with high significance. In addition, the four previously reported $J/ψϕ$ states are confirmed and two more exotic states, $Z_{cs}(4220)^+$ and $X(4630)$, are observed with significance exceeding five standard deviations.
