Measuring two-photon orbital angular momentum entanglement

We put forward an approach to estimate the amount of bipartite spatial entanglement of down-converted photon states correlated in orbital angular momentum and the magnitude of the transverse (radial) wave vectors. Both degrees of freedom are properly considered in our framework, which only requires azimuthal local linear optical transformations and mode selection analysis with two fiber detectors. The coincidence distributions predicted by our approach give an excellent fit to the distributions measured in a recent experiment aimed to show the very high-dimensional transverse entanglement of twin photons from a down-conversion source. Our estimate for the Schmidt number is substantially lower but still confirms the presence of high-dimensional entanglement.

Quantum Mechanics with Neutral Kaons

We briefly illustrate a few tests of quantum mechanics which can be performed with entangled neutral kaon pairs at a Phi-factory. This includes a quantitative formulation of Bohr's complementarity principle, the quantum eraser phenomenon and various forms of Bell inequalities.

Kaonic Quantum Erasers at KLOE 2: ``Erasing the Present, changing the Past''

Neutral kaons are unique quantum systems to show some of the most puzzling peculiarities of quantum mechanics. Here we focus on a quantitative version of Bohr's complementary principle and on quantum marking and eraser concepts. In detail we show that neutral kaons (1) are kind of double slit devices encapsulating Bohr's complementarity principle in a simple and transparent way, and (2) offer marking and eraser options which are not afforded by other quantum systems and which can be performed at the DAPHNE machine.

Popper's test of quantum mechanics and two-photon "ghost" diffraction

A test on quantum mechanics proposed long ago by Karl Popper is reconsidered with further detail and new insight. An ambiguity in the proposal, which turns out to be essential in order to make the test conclusive, is identified and taken into account for the first time. Its implications for recently performed photon experiments [such as in D. V. Strekalov \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev.\ Lett. {\bf 74}, 3600 (1995)] are briefly analyzed.

Popper's test of Quantum Mechanics

A test of quantum mechanics proposed by K. Popper and dealing with two-particle entangled states emitted from a fixed source has been criticized by several authors. Some of them claim that the test becomes inconclusive once all the quantum aspects of the source are considered. Moreover, another criticism states that the predictions attributed to quantum mechanics in Popper's analysis are untenable. We reconsider these criticisms and show that, to a large extend, the `falsifiability' potential of the test remains unaffected.

Bell's inequality tests with meson-antimeson pairs

Recent proposals to test Bell's inequalities with entangled pairs of pseudoscalar mesons are reviewed. This includes pairs of neutral kaons or B-mesons and offers some hope to close both the locality and the detection loopholes. Specific difficulties, however, appear thus invalidating most of those proposals. The best option requires the use of kaon regeneration effects and could lead to a successful test if moderate kaon detection efficiencies are achieved.

Bell's inequality tests: from photons to B-mesons

We analyse the recent claim that a violation of a Bell's inequality has been observed in the $B$--meson system [A. Go, {\em Journal of Modern Optics} {\bf 51} (2004) 991]. The results of this experiment are a convincing proof of quantum entanglement in $B$--meson pairs similar to that shown by polarization entangled photon pairs. However, we conclude that the tested inequality is not a genuine Bell's inequality and thus cannot discriminate between quantum mechanics and local realistic approaches.

Violation of a Bell inequality in particle physics experimentally verified?

Relevant aspects for testing Bell inequalities with entangled meson-antimeson systems are analyzed. In particular, we argue that the result of A. Go, J. Mod. Optics 51, 991 (2004), which nicely illustrate the quantum entanglement of B-meson pairs, cannot be considered as a Bell-test refuting local realism.

Passive Quantum Erasure for Neutral Kaons

Quantum marking and quantum erasure are discussed for the neutral kaon system. Contrary to other two-level systems, strangeness and lifetime of a neutral kaon state can be alternatively measured via an "active" or a "passive" procedure. This offers new quantum erasure possibilities. In particular, the operation of a quantum eraser in the "delayed choice" mode is clearly illustrated.

A consistent description of rho0 -> pi pi gamma decays including sigma(500) meson effects

A consistent description of $σ(500)$ meson effects in $ρ^0\toπ^0π^0γ$ and $π^+π^-γ$ decays is proposed in terms of reasonably simple amplitudes which reproduce the expected chiral-loop behaviour for large $m_σ$ values. For the neutral case, in addition to the well known $ω$ exchange, there is an important contribution from the $σ(500)$ meson that is in agreement with recent experimental data. For the charged case, where the dominant contribution comes from bremsstrahlung, the effects of the $σ(500)$ meson are relevant only at high values of the photon energy and compatible with present data. A combined analysis of both processes with moderately improved experimental information should contribute decisively to clarify the status of this controversial $σ(500)$ meson.

Scalar meson dynamics in Chiral Perturbation Theory

A comparison of the linear sigma model (L$σ$M) and Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) predictions for pion and kaon dynamics is presented. Lowest and next-to-leading order terms in the ChPT amplitudes are reproduced if one restricts to scalar resonance exchange. Some low energy constants of the order $p^4$ ChPT Lagrangian are fixed in terms of scalar meson masses. Present values of these low energy constants are compatible with the L$σ$M dynamics. We conclude that more accurate values would be most useful either to falsify the L$σ$M or to show its capability to shed some light on the controversial scalar physics.

Active and Passive Quantum Erasers for Neutral Kaons

Quantitative complementarity in two-path interferometry

The quantitative formulation of Bohr's complementarity proposed by Greenberger and Yasin is applied to some physical situations for which analytical expressions are available. This includes a variety of conventional double-slit experiments, but also particle oscillations, as in the case of the neutral-kaon system, and Mott scattering of identical nuclei. For all these cases, a unified description can be achieved including a new parameter, $ν$, which quantifies the effective number of fringes one can observe in each specific interferometric set-up.

Quantitative duality and quantum erasure for neutral kaons

The aim of this contribution is to illustrate two basic aspects of quantum mechanics applied to the neutral kaon system. We first describe a recent quantitative formulation of Bohr's complementarity principle for free--space evolution of single kaons and entangled kaon pairs. We then show that the neutral kaon system is also suitable for an optimal demonstration of the ``quantum eraser'', including its operation in the ``delayed choice'' mode. In our discussions, strangeness oscillations play the role of the traditional interference pattern linked to wave--like behaviour. The role of the two interferometric paths taken by particle--like objects is played by the differently propagating $K_S$ and $K_L$ components. Their distinct decay widths provide a quantum ``mark'' which can be erased by appropriate strangeness measurements.

Quantitative duality and neutral kaon interferometry in CPLEAR experiments

A quantitative formulation of Bohr's complementarity principle and interferometric duality is discussed and applied to the neutral kaon system. Recent measurements by the CPLEAR Collaboration can be easily interpreted in terms of ``neutral kaon interferometry'' illustrating and confirming those basic principles of quantum mechanics.

Quantum marking and quantum erasure for neutral kaons

Entangled K0 anti-K0 pairs are shown to be suitable to discuss extensions and tests of Bohr's complementarity principle through the quantum marking and quantum erasure techniques suggested by M. O. Scully and K. Druehl [Phys. Rev. A 25, 2208 (1982)]. Strangeness oscillations play the role of the traditional interference pattern linked to wave-like behaviour, whereas the distinct propagation in free space of the K_S and K_L components mimics the two possible interferometric paths taken by particle-like objects.

Scalar f0(980) and sigma(500) meson exchange in phi decays into pi0pi0gamma

The complementarity between Chiral Perturbation Theory and the Linear Sigma Model is exploited to study $π^0π^0$ production in $ϕ$ radiative decays, where the effects of the $f_0(980)$ scalar resonance, and those of its more controversial $σ(500)$ partner, should become manifest via the $ϕ\to K^+ K^- (γ)\toπ^0π^0γ$ decay chain. The recently reported data on $ϕ\toπ^0π^0γ$ coming from the VEPP-2M $e^+ e^-$ collider in Novosibirsk and the DA$Φ$NE $ϕ$-factory in Frascati can be reasonably described in our approach, which we propose as a promising first step towards more detailed analyses. The $f_0(980)$ contribution, which appears as a moderately narrow peak at the high part of the dipion mass spectrum, can be interpreted as the isoscalar member of the scalar nonet with a large $f_0 K\bar{K}$ coupling and an $f_0ππ$ coupling suppressed by almost ideal $σ$-$f_0$ mixing. Indeed, the mixing angle in the flavour basis is found to be $ϕ_{S}\approx -6^\circ$, if the $f_0$-propagator is approximated by a simple Breit-Wigner, or $ϕ_{S}\approx -9^\circ$, if an improved two-channel analysis is performed. The $σ(500)$ resonance, which is then strongly coupled to pion pairs, yields a tiny contribution because, in our approach, its coupling to kaon pairs is proportional to $m^2_σ-m^2_K$ and thus quite small.

A test of Local Realism with entangled kaon pairs and without inequalities

We propose the use of entangled pairs of neutral kaons, considered as a promising tool to close the well known loopholes affecting generic Bell's inequality tests, in a specific Hardy-type experiment. Hardy's contradiction without inequalities between Local Realism and Quantum Mechanics can be translated into a feasible experiment by requiring ideal detection efficiencies for only one of the observables to be alternatively measured. Neutral kaons are near to fulfil this requirement and therefore to close the efficiency loophole.
