Study of thermodynamic properties of substitutional mixture of Co(II)- and Fe(II)-based octacyanoniobates

A comprehensive study of thermodynamic properties of three samples of bimetallic molecular magnets [Co$^{\mathrm{II}}$(pyrazole)$_{4}$]$_{2x}$[Fe$^{\mathrm{II}}$(pyrazole)$_{4}$]$_{2(1-x)}$[Nb$^{\mathrm{IV}}$(CN)$_{8}$]$\cdot$4H$_{2}$O with $x$=0 (Co$_{2}$Nb), 0.5 (CoFeNb), and 1 (Fe$_{2}$Nb) is reported. The three samples display the same crystallographic structure crystallizing in the tetragonal system with space group $I4_1/a$. Their heat capacities are measured in the temperature range 0.36-100 K without applied field as well as in the field of $μ_0 H$ = 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, and 9 T. The results imply the presence of the second-order phase transitions to magnetically ordered phases at 4.87(8) K, 7.1(2) K, and 8.44(3) K for $x$=0, 0.5, and 1, respectively. The corresponding thermodynamic functions are analyzed to discuss the stability of the mixed compound and the magnetocaloric effect (MCE). The Gibbs energy of mixing is found to be positive but smaller in magnitude than the energy of thermal fluctuations indicating that the mixed sample is marginally stable in the full detected temperature range. The enthalpy of mixing is negative, which points to an ordered arrangement of the Co(II) and Fe(II) ions in the solid solution CoFeNb. The negative values of the entropy of mixing are explained by considering the enhanced rigidity of the crystal lattice of the solid solution sample. To extract the magnetic contribution to the heat capacity an approach based on a reasonable frequency spectrum is adopted. Taking advantage of the in-field heat capacity measurements MCE was described in terms of the isothermal entropy change $ΔS_\mathrm{M}$ and the adiabatic temperature change $ΔT_\mathrm{ad}$. The magnitudes of these quantities are typical for the class of molecular magnets.

Magnetism of PrFeAsO parent compound for iron-based superconductors: Mössbauer spectroscopy study

Moessbauer spectroscopy measurements were performed for the temperature range between 4.2 K and 300 K in a transmission geometry applying 14.41-keV resonant line in 57Fe for PrFeAsO the latter being a parent compound of the iron-based superconductors belonging to the '1111' family. It was found that an itinerant 3d magnetic order develops at about 165 K and it is accompanied by an orthorhombic distortion of the chemical unit cell. A complete longitudinal 3d incommensurate spin density wave (SDW) order develops at about 140 K. Transferred hyperfine magnetic field generated by the praseodymium magnetic order on iron nuclei is seen at 12.8 K and below, i.e., below magnetic order of praseodymium magnetic moments. It is oriented perpendicular to the field of SDW on iron nuclei. The shape of SDW is almost rectangular at low temperatures and it transforms into roughly triangular form around 'nematic' transition at about 140 K. Praseodymium magnetic order leads to the substantial enhancement of SDW due to the large orbital contribution to the magnetic moment of praseodymium. A transferred field indicates presence of strong magnetic susceptibility anisotropy in the [b-c] plane while following rotation of praseodymium magnetic moments in this plane with lowering temperature. It was found that 'nematic' phase region is a region of incoherent spin density wavelets typical for a critical region.

Field induced changes in cycloidal spin ordering and coincidence between magnetic and electric anomalies in BiFeO3 multiferroic

The ZFC and FC magnetization dependence on temperature was measured for BiFeO3 ceramics at the applied magnetic field up to H=10T in 2K-1000K range. The antiferromagnetic order was detected from the hysteresis loops below the Neel temperature TN=646K. In the low magnetic field range there is an anomaly in M(H), probably due to the field-induced transition from circular cycloid to the anharmonic cycloid. At high field limit we observe the field-induced transition to the homogeneous spin order. From the M(H) dependence we deduce that above the field Ha the spin cycloid becomes anharmonic which causes nonlinear magnetization, and above the field Hc the cycloid vanishes and the system again exhibits linear magnetization M(H). The anomalies in the electric properties, which are manifested within the 640K-680K range, coincide to the anomaly in the magnetization M(T) dependence, which occurs in the vicinity of TN. We propose to ascribe this coincidence to the critical behaviour of the chemical potential, related to the magnetic phase transition.
