Fermion zero modes in N=2 supervortices

We study the fermionic zero modes of BPS semilocal magnetic vortices in N=2 supersymmetric QED with a Fayet-Iliopoulos term and two matter hypermultiplets of opposite charge. There is a one-parameter family of vortices with arbitrarily wide magnetic cores. Contrary to the situation in pure Nielsen-Olesen vortices, new zero modes are found which get their masses from Yukawa couplings to scalar fields that do not wind and are non-zero at the core. We clarify the relation between fermion mass and zero modes. The new zero modes have opposite chiralities and therefore do not affect the net counting (left minus right) of zero modes coming from index theorems but manage to evade other index theorems in the literature that count the total number (left plus right) of zero modes in simpler systems.

CMB Anisotropies in the Presence of Extra Dimensions

We discuss the effect of the time evolution of extra dimensions on CMB anisotropies and large-scale structure formation. We study the impact of scalar fields in a low-energy effective description of a general class of brane world models on the temperature anisotropy power spectrum. We show that when the coupling between these scalar fields and matter evolves over cosmological timescales, current observations of the CMB anisotropies can constrain primordial values of the fields in a manner complementary to local, late-time tests of gravity. We also present the effect of these fields on the polarization anisotropy spectra and the growth of large-scale structure, showing that future CMB observations will constrain theories of the Universe involving extra dimensions even further.

Cosmic Defects and Particle Physics Constraints

In these lectures we review the constraints on particle physics models arising from cosmic defects. This includes constraints on theories where stable cosmic string loops, or vortons result. These can arise in supersymmetric theories. We discuss the possibility of embedded defects being stabilised by the surrounding plasma, and the constraints imposed on such theories by the microwave background data. Finally, dilaton constraints are considered.

The monopole mass in the three-dimensional Georgi-Glashow model

We study the three-dimensional Georgi-Glashow model to demonstrate how magnetic monopoles can be studied fully non-perturbatively in lattice Monte Carlo simulations, without any assumptions about the smoothness of the field configurations. We examine the apparent contradiction between the conjectured analytic connection of the `broken' and `symmetric' phases, and the interpretation of the mass (i.e., the free energy) of the fully quantised 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole as an order parameter to distinguish the phases. We use Monte Carlo simulations to measure the monopole free energy and its first derivative with respect to the scalar mass. On small volumes we compare this to semi-classical predictions for the monopole. On large volumes we show that the free energy is screened to zero, signalling the formation of a confining monopole condensate. This screening does not allow the monopole mass to be interpreted as an order parameter, resolving the paradox.

Vortices in Theories with Flat Directions

In theories with flat directions containing vortices, such as supersymmetric QED, there is a vacuum selection effect in the allowed asymptotic configurations. We explain the role played by gauge fields in this effect and give a simple criterion for determining what vacua will be chosen, namely those that minimise the vector mass. We then consider the effect of vacuum selection on stable (BPS) non-topological vortices in a simple Abelian model with N=2 supersymmetry which occurs as a low energy limit of Calabi-Yau compactifications of type II superstrings. In this case the magnetic flux spreads over an arbitrarily large area. We discuss the implications for cosmology and for superstring inspired magnetic confinement scenarios.

Four--dimensional Gravity from Singular Spaces

The modification to four--dimensional Einstein gravity at low energy in two brane models is investigated within supergravity in singular spaces. Using perturbation theory around a static BPS background, we study the effective four--dimensional gravitational theory, a scalar--tensor theory, and derive the Brans--Dicke parameter when matter is present on the positive tension brane only. We show there is an attractor mechanism towards general relativity in the matter dominated era. The dynamics of the interbrane distance are discussed. Finally, when matter lives on both branes, we find that there is a violation of the equivalence principle whose magnitude is governed by the warping of the extra dimension.

Wave function of the radion with a bulk scalar field

The behaviour of the distance between two branes (the `radion') in a braneworld model with a bulk scalar field is investigated. We show that the BPS conditions of supergravity ensure that the dynamics of the scalar field and the radion are not independent; we derive the four-dimensional effective action, showing that the effective theory is of scalar--tensor nature, coupling the radion to four-dimensional gravity.

Brane-World Cosmology, Bulk Scalars and Perturbations

We investigate aspects of cosmology in brane world theories with a bulk scalar field. We concentrate on a recent model motivated from supergravity in singular spaces. After discussing the background evolution of such a brane-world, we present the evolution of the density contrast. We compare our results to those obtained in the (second) Randall-Sundrum scenario and usual 4D scalar-tensor theories.

Natural Magnetogenesis from Inflation

We consider the gravitational generation of the massive Z-boson field of the standard model, due to the natural breaking of its conformal invariance during inflation. The electroweak symmetry restoration at the end of inflation turns the almost scale-invariant superhorizon Z-spectrum into a hypermagnetic field, which transforms into a regular magnetic field at the electroweak phase transition. The mechanism is generic and is shown to generate a superhorizon spectrum of the form B~1/L on a length-scale L regardless of the choice of inflationary model. Scaled to the epoch of galaxy formation such a field suffices to trigger the galactic dynamo and explain the observed galactic magnetic fields in the case of a spatially flat, dark energy dominated Universe with GUT-scale inflation. The possibility of further amplification of the generated field by preheating is also investigated. To this end we study a model of Supersymmetric Hybrid Inflation with a Flipped SU(5) grand unified symmetry group.

Dynamics and Properties of Chiral Cosmic Strings

Chiral cosmic strings naturally arise in many particle physics models, in particular in supersymmetric theories with a D-term. These strings have a single fermion zero mode in the core. We derive the general equation of motion for such strings. In Minkowski space we give the self-intersections for an arbitary varying current on the loop, showing that the self-intersection probability is dominated by the fraction of loop with maximal charge. We show how to relate the charge to the fermion condensation temperature, arguing that strings which become current carrying at formation will automatically have a maximal charge. Any daughter loops produced are likely to have the same charge as the parent loop. Possible models for chiral cosmic strings are also discussed and consequences for D-term inflation mentioned.

On Brane Cosmology and Naked Singularities

Brane-world singularities are analysed, emphasizing the case of supergravity in singular spaces where the singularity puzzle is naturally resolved. These naked singularities are either time-like or null, corresponding to the finite or infinite amount of conformal time that massless particles take in order to reach them. Quantum mechanically we show that the brane-world naked singularities are inconsistent. Indeed we find that time-like singularities are not wave-regular, so the time-evolution of wave packets is not uniquely defined in their vicinity, while null singularities absorb incoming radiation. Finally we stress that for supergravity in singular spaces there is a topological obstruction, whereby naked singularities are necessarily screened off by the second boundary brane.

Cosmological Evolution on Self-Tuned Branes and the Cosmological Constant

We consider the cosmological evolution of a bulk scalar field and ordinary matter living on the brane world in the light of the constraints imposed by the matter dominated cosmological evolution and a small cosmological constant now. We rule out models with a self-tuned minimum of the four dimensional potential as they would lead to rapid oscillations of the Hubble parameter now. A more natural framework is provided by supergravity in singular spaces where the brane coupling and the bulk potential are related by supersymmetry leading to a four dimensional run-away potential. For late times we obtain an accelerating universe due to the breaking of supersymmetry on the brane with an acceleration parameter of q_0=-4/7 and associated equation of state omega=-5/7.

Cosmological Solutions of Supergravity in Singular Spaces

We study brane-world solutions of five-dimensional supergravity in singular spaces. We exhibit a self-tuned four-dimensional cosmological constant when five-dimensional supergravity is broken by an arbitrary tension on the brane-world. The brane-world metric is of the FRW type corresponding to a cosmological constant $Ω_Λ={5/7}$ and an equation of state $ω=-{5/7}$ which are consistent with experiment.

Topological defects in lattice gauge theories

We present a non-perturbative formalism for measuring defect free energies (monopole mass or vortex tension) in three-dimensional SU(2)+adjoint Higgs models. Starting from twisted, translation invariant boundary conditions, we perform a change of variables that allows us to express the defect free energies in terms of 't Hooft loops. We propose that the defect free energies can be used to distinguish between phases in this model, and also more generally in other gauge field theories where no local order parameters exist. In the case of monopoles, our construction can also be used in four-dimensional pure-gauge SU(2) theory, where it gives the monopole mass in the maximally Abelian gauge without the need of actually fixing the gauge in the simulation. Moreover, the expression is manifestly independent of the choice of the Abelian projection as long as it is compatible with the classical 't Hooft-Polyakov solution.

Dynamics and properties of chiral cosmic strings in Minkowski space

Chiral cosmic strings are produced naturally at the end of inflation in supersymmetric models where the symmetry is broken via a D-term. Consequently in such theories, where both inflation and cosmic strings contribute to the density and CMBR (microwave background) perturbations, it is necessary to understand the evolution of chiral cosmic string networks. We study the dynamics of chiral cosmic strings in Minkowski space and comment on a number of differences with those of Nambu-Goto strings. To do this we follow the work of Carter and Peter who showed that the equations of motion for chiral cosmic strings reduce to a wave equation and two constraints, only one of which is different from the familiar Nambu-Goto constraints. We study chiral string loop solutions consisting of many harmonics and determine their self-intersection probabilities, and comment on the possible cosmological significance of these results.

Inflation in Supersymmetric Cosmic String Theories

We examine a non-Abelian SUSY $SU(2) \times U(1)$ gauge theory and a SUSY U(1) theory originally used to investigate the microphysics of cosmic strings in supersymmetric theories. We show that both theories automatically include hybrid inflation. In the latter theory we use a $D$ term to break the symmetry. SUSY is broken during inflation and restored afterwards. Cosmic strings are formed at the end of inflation. The temperature anisotropy is calculated and found to vary as $(M_{GUT}/M_P)^2$.

Cosmological Consequences of Superconducting String Networks

We consider the cosmological consequences of a network of superconducting cosmic strings. For strong enough current the period of friction domination never ends. Instead a plasma scaling solution is reached. We demonstrate that this gives rise to a very different cosmology than the usual horizon scaling solution. In particular the string network gives rise to adistinct imprint on the microwave sky, giving non-Gaussian features on much smaller angular scales. It also gives rise to a filament structure in string wakes. Because of the presence of the string magnetocylinder, the string magnetic field cannot create a primordial magnetic field. Similarly, it evades nucleosynthesis constraints. We also show that strings formed at the supersymmetry breaking scale can create the required baryon asymmetry of the universe.

Cosmic Strings in Realistic Particle Physics Theories and Baryogensis

Grand unified theories can admit cosmic strings with fermion zero modes. Such zero modes result in the string being current-carrying and the formation of stable remnants, vortons. However, the string zero modes do not automaticall survive subsequent phase transitions. In this case the vortons dissipate. It is possible that the dissipating cosmic vortons create the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe. We show that fermion zero modes are an automatic consequence cosmic strings in supersymmetric theories. Since supersymmetry is not observed in nature, we consider possible supersymmetry breaking terms. Some of these terms result in the zero modes being destroyed. We calculate the baryon asymmetry generated by the consequent dissipating cosmic vortons. If the supersymmtry breaking scale is high enough, then the dissipating cosmic vortons could account for the observed baryon asymmetry.
