First Measurement of the Asymmetry and the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn Integrand from $\vec{{^3}He}(\vecγ,p)d$ reaction at the Incident Photon Energy of 29 MeV

The first measurement of the $\vec{^3He}(\vecγ,p)d$ process was performed at the High Intensity $γ$-ray Source (HI$γ$S) facility at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) using a circularly polarized, monoenergetic $γ$-ray beam and a longitudinally polarized $^3$He target. The spin-dependent asymmetry and the contribution from the two-body photodisintegration to the $^3$He Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integrand are extracted and compared with state-of-the-art three-nucleon system calculations at the incident photon energy of 29.0 MeV. The data are in general agreement with the various theoretical predictions based on the Siegert theorem or on explicit inclusion of meson-exchange currents.

Studies of the Three-Body Breakup in Deuteron-Deuteron Collisions near the Quasi-Free Limit at 160 MeV

A set of differential cross section of the three-body $^{2}$H($d$,$dp$)$n$ breakup reaction at 160 MeV deuteron beam energy are presented for 147 kinematically complete configurations near the quasi-free scattering kinematics. The experiment was performed at KVI in Groningen, the Netherlands using the BINA detector. The cross-section data have been normalized to the $^{2}$H($d$,$d$)$^{2}$H elastic scattering cross section. The data are compared to the recent single-scattering approximation (SSA) calculations for three-cluster breakup in deuteron-deuteron collisions. Confronting the SSA predictions with the experimental data shows that SSA provides the correct order of magnitude of the cross-section data. The studied energy is probably too low to meet the SSA assumptions which prevents better accuracy of the description.

Four-body calculation of ${}^2\mathrm{H}(d,p){}^3\mathrm{H}$ and ${}^2\mathrm{H}(d,n){}^3\mathrm{He}$ reactions above breakup threshold

Nucleon transfer reactions in deuteron-deuteron collisions at energies above the three- and four-body breakup threshold are described using exact four-body equations for transition operators that are solved in the momentum-space framework. Differential cross sections, analyzing powers, polarizations, and spin transfer coefficients are obtained using realistic two-nucleon potentials and including the Coulomb repulsion between protons. Overall good agreement between predictions and experimental data is found. Most remarkable discrepancies are seen around the minima of the differential cross section at higher energies and in the outgoing nucleon polarization at lower energies.

Benchmark calculation of p-3H and n-3He scattering

p-3H and n-3He scattering in the energy range above the n-3He but below the d-d thresholds is studied by solving the 4-nucleon problem with a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction. Three different methods -- Alt, Grassberger and Sandhas, Hyperspherical Harmonics, and Faddeev-Yakubovsky -- have been employed and their results for both elastic and charge-exchange processes are compared. We observe a good agreement between the three different methods, thus the obtained results may serve as a benchmark. A comparison with the available experimental data is also reported and discussed.

Three-cluster breakup in deuteron-deuteron collisions: single-scattering approximation

We present results for the three-cluster breakup in deuteron-deuteron collisions at 130 and 270 MeV deuteron beam energy. The breakup amplitude is calculated using the first term in the Neumann series expansion of the corresponding exact four-nucleon equations. In analogy with nucleon-deuteron breakup where an equivalent approximation is compared with exact calculations, we expect this single-scattering approximation to provide a rough estimation of three-body breakup observables in quasifree configurations. We predict the nucleon-deuteron and deuteron-deuteron three-cluster breakup cross sections to be of a comparable size and thereby question the reliability of the recent experimental data [A. Ramazani-Moghaddam-Arani, Ph.D. thesis, University of Groningen, 2009; A. Ramazani-Moghaddam-Arani et al., EPJ Web of Conferences 3, 04012 (2010)] that is smaller by about three orders of magnitude. We also show that an equivalent single-scattering approximation provides a reasonable description of deuteron-deuteron elastic scattering at forward scattering angles.

Four-body calculation of elastic deuteron-deuteron scattering

Fully converged calculations of deuteron-deuteron elastic scattering observables are performed at energies above three- and four-body breakup threshold. Differential cross sections and analyzing powers are obtained using realistic nucleon-nucleon force models together with the Coulomb repulsion between protons. For all observables we find a very reasonable agreement with the available experimental data limited to deuteron beam energies up to 25.3 MeV.

Measurement of the Doubly-Polarized $\vec{{^3}He}(\vecγ,n)pp$ Reaction at 16.5 MeV and Its Implications for the GDH Sum Rule

We report new measurements of the doubly-polarized photodisintegration of $^3$He at an incident photon energy of 16.5 MeV, carried out at the High Intensity $γ$-ray Source (HI$γ$S) facility located at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL). The spin-dependent double-differential cross sections and the contribution from the three--body channel to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) integrand were extracted and compared with the state-of-the-art three--body calculations. The calculations, which include the Coulomb interaction and are in good agreement with the results of previous measurements at 12.8 and 14.7 MeV, can no longer describe the cross section results at 16.5 MeV. The GDH integrand was found to be about one standard deviation larger than the maximum value predicted by the theories.

Proton-${}^3$H scattering calculation: Elastic and charge-exchange reactions up to 30 MeV

Proton-${}^3$H elastic scattering and charge-exchange reaction ${}^3$H$(p,n){}^3$He in the energy regime above four-nucleon breakup threshold are described in the momentum-space transition operator framework. Fully converged results are obtained using realistic two-nucleon potentials and two-proton Coulomb force as dynamic input. Differential cross section, proton analyzing power, outgoing neutron polarization, and proton-to-neutron polarization transfer coefficients are calculated between 6 and 30 MeV proton beam energy. Good agreement with the experimental data is found for the differential cross section both in elastic and charge-exchange reactions; the latter shows a complicated energy and angular dependence. The most sizable discrepancies between predictions and data are found for the proton analyzing power and outgoing neutron polarization in the charge-exchange reaction, while the respective proton-to-neutron polarization transfer coefficients are well described by the calculations.

Deuteron-deuteron scattering above four-nucleon breakup threshold

Deuteron-deuteron elastic scattering and transfer reactions in the energy regime above four-nucleon breakup threshold are described by solving exact four-particle equations for transition operators. Several realistic nuclear interaction models are used, including the one with effective many-nucleon forces generated by the explicit $Δ$-isobar excitation; the Coulomb force between protons is taken into account as well. Differential cross sections, deuteron analyzing powers, outgoing nucleon polarization, and deuteron-to-neutron polarization transfer coefficients are calculated at 10 MeV deuteron energy. Overall good agreement with the experimental data is found. The importance of breakup channels is demonstrated.

Calculation of neutron-${}^3$He scattering up to 30 MeV

Microscopic calculations of four-body collisions become very challenging in the energy regime above the threshold for four free particles. The neutron-${}^3$He scattering is an example of such process with elastic, rearrangement, and breakup channels. We aim to calculate observables for elastic and inelastic neutron-${}^3$He reactions up to 30 MeV neutron energy using realistic nuclear force models. We solve the Alt, Grassberger, and Sandhas (AGS) equations for the four-nucleon transition operators in the momentum-space framework. The complex-energy method with special integration weights is applied to deal with the complicated singularities in the kernel of AGS equations. We obtain fully converged results for the differential cross section and neutron analyzing power in the neutron-${}^3$He elastic scattering as well as the total cross sections for inelastic reactions. Several realistic potentials are used, including the one with an explicit $Δ$ isobar excitation. There is reasonable agreement between the theoretical predictions and experimental data for the neutron-${}^3$He scattering in the considered energy regime. The most remarkable disagreements are seen around the minimum of the differential cross section and the extrema of the neutron analyzing power. The breakup cross section increases with energy exceeding rearrangement channels above 23 MeV.

Calculation of multichannel reactions in the four-nucleon system above breakup threshold

Exact four-body equations of Alt, Grassberger and Sandhas are solved for neutron-${}^3\mathrm{He}$ and proton-${}^3\mathrm{H}$ scattering in the energy regime above the four-nucleon breakup threshold. Cross sections and spin observables for elastic, transfer, charge-exchange, and breakup reactions are calculated using realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction models, including the one with effective many-nucleon forces due to explicit $Δ$-isobar excitation. The experimental data are described reasonably well with only few exceptions such as vector analyzing powers.

Bound state techniques to solve the multiparticle scattering problem

Solution of the scattering problem turns to be very difficult task both from the formal as well as from the computational point of view. If the last two decades have witnessed decisive progress in ab initio bound state calculations, rigorous solution of the scattering problem remains limited to A$\leq$4 case. Therefore there is a rising interest to apply bound-state-like methods to handle non-relativistic scattering problems. In this article the latest theoretical developments in this field are reviewed. Five fully rigorous methods will be discussed, which address the problem of nuclear collisions in full extent (including the break-up problem) at the same time avoiding treatment of the complicate boundary conditions or integral kernel singularities. These new developments allows to use modern bound-state techniques to advance significantly rigorous solution of the scattering problem.

Calculation of proton-${}^3$He elastic scattering between 7 and 35 MeV

Background: Theoretical calculations of the four-particle scattering above the four-cluster breakup threshold are technically very difficult due to nontrivial singularities or boundary conditions. Further complications arise when the long-range Coulomb force is present. Purpose: We aim at calculating proton-${}^3$He elastic scattering observables above three- and four-cluster breakup threshold. Methods: We employ Alt, Grassberger, and Sandhas (AGS) equations for the four-nucleon transition operators and solve them in the momentum-space framework using the complex-energy method whose accuracy and practical applicability is improved by a special integration method. Results: Using realistic nuclear interaction models we obtain fully converged results for the proton-${}^3$He elastic scattering. The differential cross section, proton and ${}^3$He analyzing powers, spin correlation and spin transfer coefficients are calculated at proton energies ranging from 7 to 35 MeV. Effective three- and four-nucleon forces are included via the explicit excitation of a nucleon to a $Δ$ isobar. Conclusions: Realistic proton-${}^3$He scattering calculations above the four-nucleon breakup threshold are feasible. There is quite good agreement between the theoretical predictions and experimental data for the proton-${}^3$He scattering in the considered energy regime. The most remarkable disagreements are the peak of the proton analyzing power at lower energies and the minimum of the differential cross section at higher energies. Inclusion of the $Δ$ isobar reduces the latter discrepancy.

The data reveal the importance of including the Coulomb interaction between protons in three-body calculations.

${}^3$H production via neutron-neutron-deuteron recombination

We study the recombination of two neutrons and deuteron into neutron and ${}^3$H using realistic nucleon-nucleon potential models. Exact Alt, Grassberger, and Sandhas equations for the four-nucleon transition operators are solved in the momentum-space framework using the complex-energy method with special integration weights. We find that at astrophysical or laboratory neutron densities the production of ${}^3$H via the neutron-neutron-deuteron recombination is much slower as compared to the radiative neutron-deuteron capture. We also calculate neutron-${}^3$H elastic and total cross sections.

Neutron-${}^3$H scattering above the four-nucleon breakup threshold

The four-body equations of Alt, Grassberger and Sandhas are solved for the neutron-${}^3$H scattering at energies above the four-nucleon breakup threshold. The accuracy and practical applicability of the employed complex energy method is significantly improved by the use of integration with the special weights. This allows to obtain fully converged results with realistic nuclear interactions. A satisfactory description of the existing neutron-${}^3$H elastic scattering data is obtained.

Faddeev equation approach for three-cluster nuclear reactions

In this lecture we aim to present a formalism based on Faddeev-like equations for describing nuclear three-cluster reactions that include elastic, transfer and breakup channels. Two different techniques based on momentum-space and configuration-space representations are explained in detail. An important new feature of these methods is the possibility to account for the repulsive Coulomb interaction between two of the three clusters in all channels. Comparison with previous calculations based on approximate methods used in nuclear reaction theory is also discussed.

Benchmark calculation of n-3H and p-3He scattering

The n-3H and p-3He elastic phase-shifts below the trinucleon disintegration thresholds are calculated by solving the 4-nucleon problem with three different realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions (the I-N3LO model by Entem and Machleidt, the Argonne v18 potential model, and a low-k model derived from the CD-Bonn potential). Three different methods -- Alt, Grassberger and Sandhas, Hyperspherical Harmonics, and Faddeev-Yakubovsky -- have been used and their respective results are compared. For both n-3H and p-3He we observe a rather good agreement between the three different theoretical methods. We also compare the theoretical predictions with the available experimental data, confirming the large underprediction of the p-3He analyzing power.
