Momentum-space treatment of Coulomb interaction in three-nucleon reactions with two protons

The Coulomb interaction between the two protons is included in the calculation of proton-deuteron elastic scattering, radiative proton-deuteron capture and two-body electromagnetic disintegration of ${}^3\mathrm{He}$. The hadron dynamics is based on the purely nucleonic charge-dependent (CD) Bonn potential and its realistic extension CD Bonn + $Δ$ to a coupled-channel two-baryon potential, allowing for single virtual $Δ$-isobar excitation. Calculations are done using integral equations in momentum space. The screening and renormalization approach is employed for including the Coulomb interaction. Convergence of the procedure is found already at moderate screening radii. The reliability of the method is demonstrated. The Coulomb effect on observables is seen at low energies for the whole kinematic regime. In proton-deuteron elastic scattering at higher energies the Coulomb effect is confined to forward scattering angles; the $Δ$-isobar effect found previously remains unchanged by Coulomb. In electromagnetic reactions Coulomb competes with other effects in a complicated way.

Benchmark calculation for proton-deuteron elastic scattering observables including Coulomb

Two independent calculations of proton-deuteron elastic scattering observables including Coulomb repulsion between the two protons are compared in the proton lab energy region between 3 MeV and 65 MeV. The hadron dynamics is based on the purely nucleonic charge-dependent AV18 potential. Calculations are done both in coordinate space and momentum space. The coordinate-space calculations are based on a variational solution of the three-body Schrödinger equation using a correlated hyperspherical expansion for the wave function. The momentum-space calculations proceed via the solution of the Alt-Grassberger-Sandhas equation using the screened Coulomb potential and the renormalization approach. Both methods agree within 1% on all observables, showing the reliability of both numerical techniques in that energy domain. At energies below three-body breakup threshold the coordinate-space method remains favored whereas at energies higher than 65 MeV the momentum-space approach seems to be more efficient.

Low energy $n-\nuc{3}{H}$ scattering : a novel testground for nuclear interaction

The low energy $n-\nuc{3}{H}$ elastic cross sections near the resonance peak are calculated by solving the 4-nucleon problem with realistic NN interactions. Three different methods -- Alt, Grassberger and Shandas (AGS), Hyperspherical Harmonics and Faddeev-Yakubovsky -- have been used and their respective results are compared. We conclude on a failure of the existing NN forces to reproduce the $n-\nuc{3}{H}$ total cross section.

Survey of charge symmetry breaking operators for dd -> alpha pi0

The charge-symmetry-breaking amplitudes for the recently observed d d -> alpha pi0 reaction are investigated. Chiral perturbation theory is used to classify and identify the leading-order terms. Specific forms of the related one- and two-body tree level diagrams are derived. As a first step toward a full calculation, a few tree-level two-body diagrams are evaluated at each considered order, using a simplified set of d and alpha wave functions and a plane-wave approximation for the initial dd state. The leading-order pion-exchange term is shown to be suppressed in this model because of poor overlap of the initial and final states. The higher-order one-body and short-range (heavy-meson-exchange) amplitudes provide better matching between the initial and final states and therefore contribute significantly and coherently to the cross section. The consequences this might have for a full calculation, with realistic wave functions and a more complete set of amplitudes, are discussed.

Trinucleon photonuclear reactions with $Δ$-isobar excitation: Processes below pion-production threshold

Radiative nucleon-deuteron capture and two- and three-body photo disintegration of the three-nucleon bound state are described. The description uses the purely nucleonic charge-dependent CD-Bonn potential and its coupled-channel extension CD Bonn + $Δ$. The $Δ$-isobar excitation yields an effective three-nucleon force and effective two- and three-nucleon currents besides other $Δ$-isobar effects; they are mutually consistent. Exact solutions of three-particle equations are employed for the initial and final states of the reactions. The current has one-baryon and two-baryon contributions and couples nucleonic with $Δ$-isobar channels. $Δ$-isobar effects on the observables are isolated. Shortcomings of the theoretical description are discussed and their consequence for the calculation of observables is estimated.

Trinucleon Photo Reactions with $Δ$-Isobar Excitation: Radiative Nucleon-Deuteron Capture and Two-Body Photo Disintegration of the Three-Nucleon Bound State

Radiative nucleon-deuteron capture and photo disintegration of the three-nucleo n bound state with two-body final states are described. The description uses nucleon degrees of freedom extended to include the excitation of a single nucleon to a \diso. The baryonic interaction and the electromagnetic cu rrent couple nucleonic states and states with a \diso. Exact solutions of three-p article scattering equations are employed for the initial or final states of the reactions. The current has one-baryon and two-baryon contributions. The role of t he \diso in the description of the considered photo reactions is discussed and fo und to be moderate. The spin observables $A_{yy}$ and $T_{20}$ at $90^{\circ}$ la b scattering angle can be calculated model-independently from the $E1$ Siegert te rm in the long-wavelength limit.
