Numerical Renormalization Group Calculations for the Self-energy of the impurity Anderson model

We present a new method to calculate directly the one-particle self-energy of an impurity Anderson model with Wilson's numerical Renormalization Group method by writing this quantity as the ratio of two correlation functions. This way of calculating Sigma(z) turns out to be considerably more reliable and accurate than via the impurity Green's function alone. We show results for the self-energy for the case of a constant coupling between impurity and conduction band (ImDelta = const) and the effective Delta(z) arising in the Dynamical Mean Field Theory of the Hubbard model. Implications to the problem of the metal-insulator transition in the Hubbard model are also discussed.

Anderson impurity in pseudo-gap Fermi systems

We use the numerical renormalization group method to study an Anderson impurity in a conduction band with the density of states varying as rho(omega) \propto |omega|^r with r>0. We find two different fixed points: a local-moment fixed point with the impurity effectively decoupled from the band and a strong-coupling fixed point with a partially screened impurity spin. The specific heat and the spin-susceptibility show powerlaw behaviour with different exponents in strong-coupling and local-moment regime. We also calculate the impurity spectral function which diverges (vanishes) with |omega|^{-r} (|ω|^r) in the strong-coupling (local moment) regime.

Majorana fermion formulation of the two channel Kondo model

We show that a Majorana fermion description of the two channel Kondo model can emerge quite naturally as a representation of the algebra associated with the spin currents in the two channels. Using this representation we derive an exact equivalent Hamiltonian for the two channel model expressed entirely in terms of Majorana fermions. The part of the Hamiltonian that is coupled to the impurity spin corresponds to the vector part of the $σ$-$τ$ model (compactified two channel model). Consequently all the thermodynamic properties associated with the impurity spin can be calculated from the $σ$-$τ$ model alone. The equivalent model can be used to confirm the interpretation of the many-body excitation spectrum of the low energy fixed point of the two-channel model as due to free Majorana fermions with appropriate boundary conditions.

Low energy fixed points of the sigma-tau and the O(3) symmetric Anderson models

We study the single channel (compactified) models, the sigma-tau model and the O(3) symmetric Anderson model, which were introduced by Coleman et al., and Coleman and Schofield, as a simplified way to understand the low energy behaviour of the isotropic and anisotropic two channel Kondo systems. These models display both Fermi liquid and marginal Fermi liquid behaviour and an understanding of the nature of their low energy fixed points may give some general insights into the low energy behaviour of other strongly correlated systems. We calculate the excitation spectrum at the non-Fermi liquid fixed point of the sigma-tau model using conformal field theory, and show that the results are in agreement with those obtained in recent numerical renormalization group (NRG) calculations. For the O(3) Anderson model we find further logarithmic corrections in the weak coupling perturbation expansion to those obtained in earlier calculations, such that the renormalized interaction term now becomes marginally stable rather than marginally unstable. We derive a Ward identity and a renormalized form of the perturbation theory that encompasses both the weak and strong coupling regimes and show that the chi/gamma ratio is 8/3 (chi is the total susceptibility, spin plus isospin), independent of the interaction U and in agreement with the NRG calculations.

Numerical Renormalization Group Study of the O(3)-symmetric Anderson Model

We use the numerical renormalization group method to study the O(3)-symmetric version of the impurity Anderson model of Coleman and Schofield. This model is of general interest because it displays both Fermi liquid and non-Fermi liquid behaviour, and in the large $U$ limit can be related to the compactified two channel Kondo model of Coleman, Ioffe and Tsvelik. We calculate the thermodynamics for a parameter range which covers the full range of behaviour of the model. We find a non-Fermi liquid fixed point in the isotropic case which is unstable with respect to channel anisotropy.

Non-Fermi liquid theory of a compactified Anderson single-impurity model

We consider a version of the symmetric Anderson impurity model (compactified) which has a non-Fermi liquid weak coupling regime. We find that in the Majorana fermion representation, perturbation theory can be conveniently developed in terms of Pfaffian determinants and we use this formalism to calculate the impurity free energy, self energies, and vertex functions. In the second-order perturbation theory, a linear temperature dependence of electrical resistivity is obtained, and the leading corrections to the impurity specific heat are found to behave as $T\ln T$. The impurity susceptibilities have terms in $\ln T$ to zero, first, and second order, and corrections of $\ln^2 T$ to second order as well. The singlet superconducting paired susceptibility at the impurity site, is found to have second-order corrections $\ln T$, which we interpret as an indication that a singlet conduction electron pairing resonance forms at the Fermi level. When the perturbation theory is extended to third order logarithmic divergences are found in the vertex function $Γ_{0,1,2,3}(0,0,0,0)$. Multiplicative renormalization-group method is then used to sum all the leading order logarithmic contributions, giving rise to a new weak-coupling low-temperature energy scale $T_c=Δ{\rm exp}\left[-\frac{1}{9}\left(\frac{πΔ}{U} \right )^{2}\right]$. The scaling equation shows the dimensionless coupling constant $\frac{U}{πΔ}$ is increased as the energy scale $Δ$ reduces. Our perturbational results can be justified only in the regime $T>T_c$.

Renormalization Group and Fermi Liquid Theory

We give a Hamiltonian based interpretation of microscopic Fermi liquid theory within a renormalization group framework. We identify the fixed point Hamiltonian of Fermi liquid theory, with the leading order corrections, and show that this Hamiltonian in mean field theory gives the Landau phenomenological theory. A renormalized perturbation theory is developed for calculations beyond the Fermi liquid regime. We also briefly discuss the breakdown of Fermi liquid theory as it occurs in the Luttinger model, and the infinite dimensional Hubbard model at the Mott transition.

Transport Coefficients of the Anderson Model via the Numerical Renormalization Group

The transport coefficients of the Anderson model are calculated by extending Wilson's NRG method to finite temperature Green's functions. Accurate results for the frequency and temperature dependence of the single--particle spectral densities and transport time $τ(ω,T)$ are obtained and used to extract the temperature dependence of the transport coefficients in the strong correlation limit. The low temperature anomalies in the resistivity, $ρ(T)$, thermopower, $S(T)$, thermal conductivity $κ(T)$ and Hall coefficient, $R_{H}(T)$, are discussed. All quantities exhibit the expected Fermi liquid behaviour at low temperature with power law dependecies on $T/T_{K}$ in very good agreement with analytic results based on Fermi liquid theory. Scattering of conduction electrons in higher, $l>0$, angular momentum channels is also considered and an expression is derived for the corresponding transport time and used to discuss the influence of non--resonant scattering on the transport properties.
