A High Statistics Study of Flavour-Singlet Mesons with Staggered Fermions

We present some early results from a high statistics study of the scalar and pseudoscalar singlet sectors of lattice QCD using 2+1 flavours of Asqtad improved staggered fermions. The use of the Asqtad action has allowed us to generate an unprecedented number of configurations at 2 lattice spacings which on completion we hope will give us a significantly improved view of both the scalar and pseudoscalar singlet sectors.

Determining the strange quark mass for 2-flavour QCD

Using the O(a) Symanzik improved action an estimate is given for the strange quark mass for unquenched (n_f=2) QCD. The determination is via the axial Ward identity (AWI) and includes a non-perturbative evaluation of the renormalisation constant. Numerical results have been obtained at several lattice spacings, enabling the continuum limit to be taken. Our results indicate a value for the strange quark mass (in the MS-bar scheme at a scale of 2 GeV) in the range 100 - 130 MeV. A comparison is also made with other recent lattice determinations of the strange quark mass using dynamical sea quarks.

Estimating the Unquenched Strange Quark Mass from the Lattice Axial Ward Identity

We present a determination of the strange quark mass for two flavours (nf=2) of light dynamical quarks using the axial Ward identity. The calculations are performed on the lattice using O(a) improved Wilson fermions and include a fully non-perturbative determination of the renormalisation constant. In the continuum limit we find in the MSbar scheme at 2GeV, ms = 111(6)(4)(6)MeV using the force scale r0 = 0.467fm, where the first error is statistical, the second and third are systematic due to the fit and scale uncertainties respectively. Results are also presented for the light quark mass and the chiral condensate. The corresponding results are also given for r0=0.5fm.

A Determination of the Lambda Parameter from Full Lattice QCD

We present a determination of the QCD parameter Lambda in the quenched approximation (n_f=0) and for two flavours (n_f=2) of light dynamical quarks. The calculations are performed on the lattice using O(a) improved Wilson fermions and include taking the continuum limit. We find Lambda_{n_f=0} = 259(1)(20) MeV and Lambda_{n_f=2} = 261(17)(26) MeV}, using r_0 = 0.467 fm to set the scale. Extrapolating our results to five flavours, we obtain for the running coupling constant at the mass of the Z boson alpha_s(m_Z) = 0.112(1)(2). All numbers refer to the MSbar scheme.

Determination of Lambda in quenched and full QCD - an update

We present an update on our previous determination of the Lambda parameter in QCD. The main emphasis is on results for two flavours of light dynamical quarks, where we can now almost double the amount of data used, including values at smaller lattice spacings. The calculations are performed using $O(a)$ improved Wilson fermions. Little change is found to previous numerical values.

Determination of Light and Strange Quark Masses from Full Lattice QCD

We compute the light and strange quark masses m_l = (m_u+m_d)/2 and m_s, respectively, in full lattice QCD with N_f=2 flavors of light dynamical quarks. The renormalization constants, which convert bare quark masses into renormalized quark masses, are computed nonperturbatively, including the effect of quark-line disconnected diagrams. We obtain m_l=4.7(2)(3) MeV and m_s=119(5)(8) MeV in the MSbar scheme at the scale 2 GeV.

The nucleon mass in N_f=2 lattice QCD: finite size effects from chiral perturbation theory

In the framework of relativistic SU(2)_f baryon chiral perturbation theory we calculate the volume dependence of the nucleon mass up to and including O(p^4). Since the parameters in the resulting finite size formulae are fixed from the pion mass dependence of the large volume nucleon masses and from phenomenology, we obtain a parameter-free prediction of the finite size effects. We present mass data from the recent N_f=2 simulations of the UKQCD and QCDSF collaborations and compare these data as well as published mass values from the dynamical simulations of the CP-PACS and JLQCD collaborations with the theoretical expectations. Remarkable agreement between the lattice data and the predictions of chiral perturbation theory in a finite volume is found.

Progress in building an International Lattice Data Grid

We report on progress in setting up the International Lattice Data Grid. We describe the aims and objectives of the ILDG, what has been achieved during its first year of activity and invite feedback from the community.

International Lattice Data Grid

We propose the co-ordination of lattice QCD grid developments in different countries to allow transparent exchange of gauge configurations in future, should participants wish to do so. We describe briefly UKQCD's XML schema for labelling and cataloguing the data. A meeting to further develop these ideas will be held in Edinburgh on 19/20 December 2002, and will be available over AccessGrid.

Finite Size Effects in Nucleon Masses in Dynamical QCD

For lattice calculations with light dynamical quarks, finite size effects have become an important aspect. We study finite size effects in nucleon masses on N_f=2 dynamical lattices of 1-2 fm. Predictions for the finite size effects are obtained in one-loop chiral perturbation theory.

Improved Wilson QCD simulations at light quark masses

We present preliminary results from UKQCD simulations at light quark masses using two flavours of non-pertubatively improved Wilson fermions. We report on the performance of the standard HMC algorithm at these quark masses where m_pi/m_rho < 0.5 in comparison with simulations using improved staggered quarks.

Effects of non-perturbatively improved dynamical fermions in QCD at fixed lattice spacing

We present results for the static inter-quark potential, lightest glueballs, light hadron spectrum and topological susceptibility using a non-perturbatively improved action on a $16^3\times 32$ lattice at a set of values of the bare gauge coupling and bare dynamical quark mass chosen to keep the lattice size fixed in physical units ($\sim 1.7$ fm). By comparing these measurements with a matched quenched ensemble, we study the effects due to two degenerate flavours of dynamical quarks. With the greater control over residual lattice spacing effects which these methods afford, we find some evidence of charge screening and some minor effects on the light hadron spectrum over the range of quark masses studied ($M_{PS}/M_{V}\ge0.58$). More substantial differences between quenched and unquenched simulations are observed in measurements of topological quantities.

The strong coupling constant from lattice QCD with N_f=2 dynamical quarks

We compute $Λ_{\bar{MS}}$ for two flavors of light dynamical quarks using non-perturbatively $O(a)$ improved Wilson fermions. We improve on a recent calculation by employing Padé-improved two-loop and three-loop perturbation theory to convert the lattice numbers to the $\bar{MS}$ scheme.
