Gaussian noise and the two-network frustrated Kuramoto model

We examine analytically and numerically a variant of the stochastic Kuramoto model for phase oscillators coupled on a general network. Two populations of phased oscillators are considered, labelled `Blue' and `Red', each with their respective networks, internal and external couplings, natural frequencies, and frustration parameters in the dynamical interactions of the phases. We disentagle the different ways that additive Gaussian noise may influence the dynamics by applying it separately on zero modes or normal modes corresponding to a Laplacian decomposition for the sub-graphs for Blue and Red. Under the linearisation ansatz that the oscillators of each respective network remain relatively phase-sychronised centroids or clusters, we are able to obtain simple closed-form expressions using the Fokker-Planck approach for the dynamics of the average angle of the two centroids. In some cases, this leads to subtle effects of metastability that we may analytically describe using the theory of ratchet potentials. These considerations are extended to a regime where one of the populations has fragmented in two. The analytic expressions we derive largely predict the dynamics of the non-linear system seen in numerical simulation. In particular, we find that noise acting on a more tightly coupled population allows for improved synchronisation of the other population where deterministically it is fragmented.

Fixed points and stability in the two-network frustrated Kuramoto model

We examine a modification of the Kuramoto model for phase oscillators coupled on a network. Here, two populations of oscillators are considered, each with different network topologies, internal and cross-network couplings and frequencies. Additionally, frustration parameters for the interactions of the cross-network phases are introduced. This may be regarded as a model of competing populations: internal to any one network phase synchronisation is a target state, while externally one or both populations seek to frequency synchronise to a phase in relation to the competitor. We conduct fixed point analyses for two regimes: one, where internal phase synchronisation occurs for each population with the potential for instability in the phase of one population in relation to the other; the second where one part of a population remains fixed in phase in relation to the other population, but where instability may occur within the first population leading to `fragmentation'. We compare analytic results to numerical solutions for the system at various critical thresholds.

Poincaré recurrence theorem and the strong CP-problem

The existence in the physical QCD vacuum of nonzero gluon condensates, such as $ $, requires dominance of gluon fields with finite mean action density. This naturally allows any real number value for the unit ``topological charge'' $q$ characterising the fields approximating the gluon configurations which should dominate the QCD partition function. If $q$ is an irrational number then the critical values of the $θ$ parameter for which CP is spontaneously broken are dense in $\mathbb{R}$, which provides for a mechanism of resolving the strong CP problem simultaneously with a correct implementation of $U_{\rm A}(1)$ symmetry. We present an explicit realisation of this mechanism within a QCD motivated domain model. Some model independent arguments are given that suggest the relevance of this mechanism also to genuine QCD.

Landau gauge Jacobian and BRST symmetry

We propose a generalisation of the Faddeev-Popov trick for Yang-Mills fields in the Landau gauge. The gauge-fixing is achieved as a genuine change of variables. In particular the Jacobian that appears is the modulus of the standard Faddeev-Popov determinant. We give a path integral representation of this in terms of auxiliary bosonic and Grassman fields extended beyond the usual set for standard Landau gauge BRST. The gauge-fixing Lagrangian density appearing in this context is local and enjoys a new extended BRST and anti-BRST symmetry though the gauge-fixing Lagrangian density in this case is not BRST exact.

Curci-Ferrari mass and the Neuberger problem

We study the massive Curci-Ferrari model as a starting point for defining BRST quantisation for Yang-Mills theory on the lattice. In particular, we elucidate this proposal in light of topological approaches to gauge-fixing and study the case of a simple one-link Abelian model.

Realisation of chiral symmetry in the domain model of QCD

The domain model for the QCD vacuum has previously been developed and shown to exhibit confinement of quarks and strong correlation of the local chirality of quark modes and duality of the background domain-like gluon field. Quark fluctuations satisfy a chirality violating boundary conditions parametrized by a random chiral angle $α_j$ on the $j-th$ domain. The free energy of an ensemble of $N\to\infty$ domains depends on $\{α_j, j=1... N\}$ through the logarithm of the quark determinant. Its parity odd part is given by the axial anomaly. The anomaly contribution to the free energy suppresses continuous axial U(1) degeneracy in the ground state, leaving only a residual axial Z(2) symmetry. This discrete symmetry and flavour $SU(N_f)_L\times SU(N_f)_R$ chiral symmetry in turn are spontaneously broken with a quark condensate arising due to the asymmetry of the spectrum of Dirac operator. In order to illustrate the splitting between the $η'$ from octet pseudoscalar mesons realised in the domain model, we estimate the masses of light pseudoscalar and vector mesons.

Axial U(1) and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking within a confining model of the QCD vacuum

A model for the QCD vacuum based on domain-like background gluon fields has previously been developed and demonstrated to exhibit confinement of quarks and strong correlation of the local chirality of quark modes and duality of the background gluon field. On the boundary of the j-th domain, quark fluctuations satisfy chirality violating boundary conditions parametrized by a chiral angle $α_j$ which is treated as a collective variable. The dependence of the free energy of an ensemble of $N\to\infty$ domains on $\{α_j, j=1... N\}$ is studied. For one massless flavour there are only two degenerate minima ($α_j=0,π$ $\forall j$) due to the contribution of the anomaly to the free energy, which suppresses the continuous U(1) degeneracy. The residual discrete symmetry is spontaneously broken with a quark condensate of $-(238 {\rm{MeV}})^3.$ For $N_f$ massless flavours a continuous $SU(N_f)_L\times SU(N_f)_R$ degeneracy appears, while the $U_A(1)$ direction remains suppressed.

Quark determinant in domain-like gluon fields

We address the computation of the determinant for the Dirac operator corresponding to a quark propagating in a background gluon field of the following type: the gauge field is covariantly constant and self-dual inside a hypersphere and with quark fields satisfying bag-like (chiral-violating) boundary conditions at the surface of the hypersphere. We find that the parity odd part of the logarithm of the determinant corresponds to the Abelian anomaly. However the parity even part also depends on the chiral angle associated with the boundary. This unexpected dependence is discussed.

Domains in the Nonperturbative QCD Vacuum

QCD vacuum gluon fields are modelled by hyperspherical domains of constant field strength. The pure glue theory confines static quarks. Solutions of the Dirac operator have chirality properties in agreement with lattice results.

Confinement and chiral symmetry breaking via a domainlike mean field

Singular gauge fields in the partition function for QCD can lead to a domain-like picture for the QCD vacuum by virtue of constraints on quantum fluctuations at the singularities. With a simple model of hyperspherical domains with interiors of constant field strength we show that the main features of gluon condensation and an area law for static quarks can be realised. The Dirac operator in such a background is exactly soluble. Chirality properties of the solutions show agreement with recent lattice results.

On Domain-like Structures in the QCD Vacuum

We suggest that clusters or domains of topological charge and action density occur in the QCD vacuum as an effect of singularities in gauge fields and can simultaneously lead to confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. The string constant, condensates and topological susceptibility are estimated within a simplified model of hyperspherical domains with interiors of constant field strength with reasonable values obtained. Propagators of dynamical quarks and gluons have compact support in configuration space, thus having entire Fourier transforms, which gives rise to their confinement.

Domain-like Structures in the QCD Vacuum, Confinement and Chiral Symmetry Breaking

We discuss how the inclusion of singular gauge fields in the partition function for QCD can lead to a domain-like picture for the QCD vacuum by virtue of specific conditions on quantum fluctuations at the singularities. With a simplified model of hyperspherical domain regions with interiors of constant field strength we calculate the basic parameters of the QCD vacuum, the gluon condensate, topological susceptibility, string constant and quark condensate, and briefly discuss confinement of dynamical quarks and gluons.

Confining Properties of the Homogeneous Self-Dual Field and the Effective Potential in SU(2) Yang-Mills Theory

We examine in non-Abelian gauge theory the heavy quark limit in the presence of the (anti-)self-dual homogeneous background field and see that a confining potential emerges, consistent with the Wilson criterion, although the potential is quadratic and not linear in the quark separation. This builds upon the well-known feature that propagators in such a background field are entire functions. The way in which deconfinement can occur at finite temperature is then studied in the static temporal gauge by calculation of the effective potential at high temperature. Finally we discuss the problems to be surmounted in setting up the calculation of the effective potential nonperturbatively on the lattice.

Effect of Zero Modes on the Bound-State Spectrum in Light-Cone Quantisation

We study the role of bosonic zero modes in light-cone quantisation on the invariant mass spectrum for the simplified setting of two-dimensional SU(2) Yang-Mills theory coupled to massive scalar adjoint matter. Specifically, we use discretised light-cone quantisation where the momentum modes become discrete. Two types of zero momentum mode appear -- constrained and dynamical zero modes. In fact only the latter type of modes turn out to mix with the Fock vacuum. Omission of the constrained modes leads to the dynamical zero modes being controlled by an infinite square-well potential. We find that taking into account the wavefunctions for these modes in the computation of the full bound state spectrum of the two dimensional theory leads to 21% shifts in the masses of the lowest lying states.

Magnetic and Thermodynamic Stability of SU(2) Yang-Mills Theory

SU(2) Yang-Mills theory at finite extension or, equivalently, at finite temperature is probed by a homogeneous chromomagnetic field. We use a recent modified axial gauge formulation which has the novel feature of respecting the center symmetry in perturbation theory. The characteristic properties of the Z_2-symmetric phase, an extension-dependent mass term and antiperiodic boundary conditions, provide stabilization against magnetic field formation for sufficiently small extension or high temperature. In an extension of this investigation to the deconfined phase with broken center symmetry, the combined constraints of thermodynamic and magnetic stability are shown to yield many of the high temperature properties of lattice SU(2) gauge theory.

Quantum Electrodynamics in the Light-Front Weyl Gauge

We examine QED(3+1) quantised in the `front form' with finite `volume' regularisation, namely in Discretised Light-Cone Quantisation. Instead of the light-cone or Coulomb gauges, we impose the light-front Weyl gauge $A^-=0$. The Dirac method is used to arrive at the quantum commutation relations for the independent variables. We apply `quantum mechanical gauge fixing' to implement Gauß' law, and derive the physical Hamiltonian in terms of unconstrained variables. As in the instant form, this Hamiltonian is invariant under global residual gauge transformations, namely displacements. On the light-cone the symmetry manifests itself quite differently.

Light-Front QCD(1+1) Coupled to Adjoint Scalar Matter

We consider adjoint scalar matter coupled to QCD(1+1) in light-cone quantization on a finite `interval' with periodic boundary conditions. We work with the gauge group SU(2) which is modified to ${\rm{SU(2)/Z_2}}$ by the non-trivial topology. The model is interesting for various nonperturbative approaches because it is the sector of zero transverse momentum gluons of pure glue QCD(2+1), where the scalar field is the remnant of the transverse gluon component. We use the Hamiltonian formalism in the gauge $\partial_- A^+ = 0$. What survives is the dynamical zero mode of $A^+$, which in other theories gives topological structure and degenerate vacua. With a point-splitting regularization designed to preserve symmetry under large gauge transformations, an extra $A^+$ dependent term appears in the current $J^+$. This is reminiscent of an (unwanted) anomaly. In particular, the gauge invariant charge and the similarly regulated $P^+$ no longer commute with the Hamiltonian. We show that nonetheless one can construct physical states of definite momentum which are not {\it invariant} under large gauge transformations but do {\it transform} in a well-defined way. As well, in the physical subspace we recover vanishing {\it expectation values} of the commutators between the gauge invariant charge, momentum and Hamiltonian operators. It is argued that in this theory the vacuum is nonetheless trivial and the spectrum is consistent with the results of others who have treated the large N, SU(N), version of this theory in the continuum limit.

Towards Solving QCD - The Transverse Zero Modes in Light-Cone Quantization

We formulate QCD in (d+1) dimensions using Dirac's front form with periodic boundary conditions, that is, within Discretized Light-Cone Quantization. The formalism is worked out in detail for SU(2) pure glue theory in (2+1) dimensions which is approximated by restriction to the lowest {\it transverse} momentum gluons. The dimensionally-reduced theory turns out to be SU(2) gauge theory coupled to adjoint scalar matter in (1+1) dimensions. The scalar field is the remnant of the transverse gluon. This field has modes of both non-zero and zero {\it longitudinal} momentum. We categorize the types of zero modes that occur into three classes, dynamical, topological, and constrained, each well known in separate contexts. The equation for the constrained mode is explicitly worked out. The Gauss law is rather simply resolved to extract physical, namely color singlet states. The topological gauge mode is treated according to two alternative scenarios related to the In the one, a spectrum is found consistent with pure SU(2) gluons in (1+1) dimensions. In the other, the gauge mode excitations are estimated and their role in the spectrum with genuine Fock excitations is explored. A color singlet state is given which satisfies Gauss' law. Its invariant mass is estimated and discussed in the physical limit.
