Semi-empirical metallicity calibrations based on ultraviolet emission lines of type-2 AGNs

We derived two semi-empirical calibrations between the metallicity of the Narrow Line Region (NLR) of type-2 Active Galactic Nuclei and the rest-frame of the N V$λ$1240/He II$\lambda1640$, C43=log[(C IV$\lambda1549$+C III]$\lambda1909$)/HeII$\lambda1640$] and C III]$\lambda1909$/C IV$\lambda1549$ emission-line intensity ratios. A metallicity-independent calibration between the ionization parameter and the C III]$\lambda1909$/C IV$\lambda1549$ emission-lines ratio was also derived. These calibrations were obtained comparing ratios of measured UV emission-line intensities, compiled from the literature, for a sample of 77 objects (redshift $0 \: < \: z \: < \: 3.8$) with those predicted by a grid of photoionization models built with the Cloudy code. Using the derived calibrations, it was possible to show that the metallicity estimations for NLRs are lower by a factor of about 2-3 than those for Broad Line Regions (BLRs). Besides we confirmed the recent result of the existence of a relation between the stellar mass of the host galaxy and its NLR metallicity. We also derived a $M-Z$ relation for the objects in our sample at $1.6 \: < \: z \: < \: 3.8$. This relation seems to follow the same trend as the ones estimated for Star Forming galaxies of similar high redshifts but for higher masses.

Effective temperature of ionizing stars of extragalactic HII regions -- II: nebular parameter relations based on CALIFA data

We calculate the effective temperature ($T_{\rm eff}$) of ionizing star(s), oxygen abundance of the gas phase $(\rm O/H)$, and the ionization parameter $U$ for a sample of H\,{\sc ii} regions located in the disks of 59 spiral galaxies in the 0.005 < z < 0.03 redshift range. We use spectroscopic data taken from the CALIFA data release 3 (DR3) and theoretical (for $T_{\rm eff}$ and $U$) and empirical (for O/H) calibrations based on strong emission-lines. We consider spatial distribution and radial gradients of those parameters in each galactic disk for the objects in our sample. Most of the galaxies in our sample ($\sim70$ \%) shows positive $T_{\rm eff}$ radial gradients even though some them exhibit negative or flat ones. The median value of the $T_{\rm eff}$ radial gradient is 0.762 kK/$R_{25}$. We find that radial gradients of both $\log U$ and $T_{\rm eff}$ depend on the oxygen abundance gradient, in the sense that the gradient of $\log U$ increases as $\log(\rm O/H)$ gradient increases while there is an anti-correlation between the gradient of $T_{\rm eff}$ and the oxygen abundance gradient. Moreover, galaxies with flat oxygen abundance gradients tend to have flat $\log U$ and $T_{\rm eff}$ gradients as well. Although our results are in agreement with the idea of the existence of positive $T_{\rm eff}$ gradients along the disk of the majority of spiral galaxies, this seems not to be an universal property for these objects.

Nature and chemical abundances of a sample of Lyman-$α$ emitter objects at high redshift

We built a grid of photoionization models and compiled already available observational emission line intensities ($\rm 1000 \: < \: λ(Å) \: < \: 2000$) of confirmed star formation regions and Active Galactic Nucleus (AGNs) in order to classify five Ly$α$ emitter (LAE) objects at high redshift $(5.7 \: < \: z \: < \:7.2)$. We selected objects for which at least one metal emission-line was measured. The resulting sample is composed by the objects RXCJ2248.7-4431-ID3, HSCJ233408+004403, COSY, A1703-zd6, and CR7 (clump C). The photoionization models were built assuming a Power Law (associated with the presence of an AGN), a Direct Collapse Black Hole (DCBH), and Population II stars for the ionizing source. The resulting models were then compared with observational emission-line ratios in six diagnostic diagrams to produce a spectral classification of the sample. We found that CR7 (clump C), HSCJ233408+004403 and COSY probably have a non thermal ionizing source (AGN or DCBH) while the RXC J2248.7-4431-ID3 and A1703-zd6 seem to host a stellar cluster. Detailed photoionization models were constructed to reproduce observational emission line ratios of the sample of LAEs, and to derive chemical abundances and number of ionizing photons $Q(\rm H)$ of these objects. From these models, we found metallicities in the range $(Z/Z_{\odot})=0.1-0.5$ and $\log Q(\rm H) \: > \: 53$. Values for C/O abundance ratio derived for the LAEs seem to be consistent with those derived for local star forming objects with similar metallicities, while an overabundance of N/O was found for most of the LAEs.

Eight luminous early-type galaxies in nearby pairs and sparse groups I. Stellar populations spatially analysed

We present a detailed spatial analysis of stellar populations based on long-slit optical spectra in a sample of eight luminous early-type galaxies selected from nearby sparse groups and pairs, three of them may be interacting with a galaxy of similar mass. We have measured luminosity-weighted averages of age, [M/H], [Fe/H], and [$α$/Fe] to add empirical data relative to the influence of galaxy mass, environment, interaction, and AGN feedback in their formation and evolution. The stellar population of the individual galaxies were determined through the stellar population synthesis code STARLIGHT using semi-empirical simple stellar population models. Radial variations of luminosity-weighted means of age, [M/H], [Fe/H], and [$α$/Fe] were measured up to half of the effective radius of each galaxy. We found trends between these values and the nuclear stellar velocity dispersion. There are also relations between the metallicity/age gradients and the velocity dispersion. Contributions of 1-4 Gyr old stellar populations were found in IC5328 and NGC6758 as well as 4-8 Gyr old ones in NGC5812. Extended gas is present in IC5328, NGC1052, NGC1209, and NGC6758, and the presence of a LINER is identified in all these galaxies. The regions up to one effective radius of all galaxies are dominated by $α$-enhanced metal-rich old stellar populations likely due to rapid star formation episodes that induced efficient chemical enrichment. On average, the age and [$α$/Fe] gradients are null and the [M/H] gradients are negative, although discordant cases were found. We found no correlation between the stellar population properties and the LINER presence as well as between the stellar properties and environment or gravitational interaction, suggesting that the influence of progenitor mass can-not be discarded in the formation and evolution of early-type galaxies.

Interaction effects on galaxy pairs with GeminiGMOS-III: Stellar population synthesis

We present an observational study of the impacts of the interactions on the stellar population in a sample of galaxy pairs. Long-slit spectra in the wavelength range 3440-7300 Å obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) at Gemini South for fifteen galaxies in nine close pairs were used. The spatial distributions of the stellar population contributions were obtained using the stellar population synthesis code STARLIGHT. Taking into account the different contributions to the emitted light, we found that most of the galaxies in our sample are dominated by the young/intermediate stellar populations. This result differs from the one derived for isolated galaxies where the old stellar population dominates the disc surface brightness. We interpreted such different behavior as being due to the effect of gas inflows along the disk of interacting galaxies on the star formation in a time scale of the order of about 2Gyr. We also found that, in general, the secondary galaxy of the pairs has a higher contribution of the young stellar population than the primary one. We compared the estimated values of the stellar and nebular extinctions derived from the synthesis method and the Hα/H\b{eta} emission-line ratio finding that the nebular extinctions are systematically higher than stellar ones by about a factor of 2. We did not find any correlation between nebular and stellar metallicities. We neither found a correlation between stellar metallicities and ages while a positive correlation between nebular metallicities and stellar ages was obtained, with the older regions being the most metal-rich.

Effective temperature of ionizing stars of extragalactic HII regions

The effective temperature (Teff) of the radiation field of the ionizing star(s) of a large sample of extragalactic HII regions was estimated using the R= log([OII](3727)/[OIII]5007) index. We used a grid of photoionization models to calibrate the Teff-R relation finding that it has a strong dependence with the ionizing parameter while it shows a weak direct dependence with the metallicity (variations in Z imply variations in U) of both the stellar atmosphere of the ionizing star and the gas phase of the HII region. Since the R index varies slightly with the Teff for values larger than 40 kK, the R index can be used to derive the Teff in 30-40 kK range. A large fraction of the ionization parameter variation is due to differences in the temperature of the ionizing stars and then the use of the (relatively) low Teff dependent S2=[S II](6717+31)/Ha emission-line ratio to derive the ionization parameter is preferable over others in the literature. We propose linear metallicity dependent relationships between S2 and U. Teff and metallicity estimations for a sample of 865 HII regions, whose emission-line intensities were compiled from the literature, do not show any Teff-Z correlation. On the other hand it seems to be hints of the presence of an anti-correlation between Teff-U. We found that the majority of the studied HII regions (87%) present Teff values in the range between 37 and 40 kK, with an average value of 38.5 kK. We also studied the variation of Teff as a function of the galactocentric distance for 14 spiral galaxies. Our results are in agreement with the idea of the existence of positive Teff gradients along the disk of spiral galaxies.

Sulphur abundance determinations in star-forming regions-I: Ionization Correction Factor

In the present work we used a grid of photoionization models combined with stellar population synthesis models to derive reliable Ionization Correction Factors (ICFs) for the sulphur in star-forming regions. These models cover a large range of nebular parameters and yielding ionic abundances in consonance with those derived through optical and infrared observational data of star-forming regions. From our theoretical ICFs, we suggested an α value of 3.27 in the classical Stasinska formulae. We compared the total sulphur abundance in the gas phase of a large sample of objects by using our Theoretical ICF and other approaches. In average, the differences between the determinations via the use of the different ICFs considered are similar to the uncertainties in the S/H estimations. Nevertheless, we noted that for some objects it could reach up to about 0.3 dex for the low metallicity regime. Despite of the large scatter of the points, we found a trend of S/O ratio to decrease with the metallicity, independently of the ICF used to compute the sulphur total abundance.

On the central abundances of Active Galactic Nuclei and Star-forming Galaxies

We examine the relation between oxygen abundances in the narrow-line regions (NLRs) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) estimated from the optical emission lines through the strong-line method (the theoretical calibration of Storchi-Bergmann et al.(1998)), via the direct Te-method, and the central intersect abundances in the host galaxies determined from the radial abundance gradients. We found that the Te-method underestimates the oxygen abundances by up to ~2 dex (with average value of ~0.8 dex) compared to the abundances derived through the strong-line method. This confirms the existence of the so-called "temperature problem" in AGNs. We also found that the abundances in the centres of galaxies obtained from their spectra trough the strong-line method are close to or slightly lower than the central intersect abundances estimated from the radial abundance gradient both in AGNs and Star-forming galaxies. The oxygen abundance of the NLR is usually lower than the maximum attainable abundance in galaxies (~2 times the solar value). This suggests that there is no extraordinary chemical enrichment of the NLRs of AGNs.

Photometry and dynamics of the minor mergers AM\,1228-260 and AM\,2058-381

We investigate interaction effects on the dynamics and morphology of the galaxy pairs AM\,2058-381 and AM\,1228-260. This work is based on $r'$ images and long-slit spectra obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph at the Gemini South Telescope. The luminosity ratio between the main (AM\,2058A) and secondary (AM\,2058B) components of the first pair is a factor of $\sim$ 5, while for the other pair, the main (AM\,1228A) component is 20 times more luminous than the secondary (AM\,1228B). The four galaxies have pseudo-bulges, with a Sérsic index $n<2$. Their observed radial velocities profiles (RVPs) present several irregularities. The receding side of the RVP of AM\,2058A is displaced with respect to the velocity field model, while there is a strong evidence that AM\,2058B is a tumbling body, rotating along its major axis. The RVPs for AM\,1228A indicate a misalignment between the kinematic and photometric major axes. The RVP for AM\,1228B is quite perturbed, very likely due to the interaction with AM\,1228A. NFW halo parameters for AM\,2058A are similar to those of the Milky Way and M\,31. The halo mass of AM\,1228A is roughly 10\% that of AM\,2058A. The mass-to-light (M/L) of AM\,2058 agrees with the mean value derived for late-type spirals, while the low M/L for AM\,1228A may be due to the intense star formation ongoing in this galaxy.

Interaction effects on galaxy pairs with Gemini/GMOS- II: Oxygen abundance gradients

In this paper we derived oxygen abundance gradients from HII regions located in eleven galaxies in eight systems of close pairs. Long-slit spectra in the range 4400-7300A were obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spec- trograph at Gemini South (GMOS). Spatial profiles of oxygen abundance in the gaseous phase along galaxy disks were obtained using calibrations based on strong emission-lines (N2 and O3N2). We found oxygen gradients signifi- cantly flatter for all the studied galaxies than those in typical isolated spiral galaxies. Four objects in our sample, AM1219A, AM1256B, AM 2030A and AM2030B, show a clear break in the oxygen abundance at galactocentric radius R/R25 between 0.2 and 0.5. For AM1219A and AM1256B we found negative slopes for the inner gradients, and for AM2030B we found a positive one. In all these three cases they show a flatter behaviour to the outskirts of the galaxies. For AM2030A, we found a positive-slope outer gradient while the inner one is almost compatible with a flat behaviour. A decrease of star forma- tion efficiency in the zone that corresponds to the oxygen abundance gradient break for AM1219A and AM2030B was found. For the former, a minimum in the estimated metallicities was found very close to the break zone that could be associated with a corotation radius. On the other hand, AM1256B and AM2030A, present a SFR maximum but not an extreme oxygen abundance value. All the four interacting systems that show oxygen gradient breakes the extreme SFR values are located very close to break zones. Hii regions lo- cated in close pairs of galaxies follow the same relation between the ionization parameter and the oxygen abundance as those regions in isolated galaxies.

Interaction effects on galaxy pairs with Gemini/GMOS- I: Electron density

We present an observational study about the impacts of the interactions in the electron density of \ion{H}{ii} regions located in 7 systems of interacting galaxies. The data consist of long-slit spectra in the range 4400-7300 A, obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph at Gemini South (GMOS). The electron density was determined using the ratio of emission lines [SII]6716/6731. Our results indicate that the electron density estimates obtained of HII regions from our sample of interacting galaxies are systematically higher than those derived for isolated galaxies. The mean electron density values of interacting galaxies are in the range of $N_{\rm e}=24-532$\,$ \rm cm^{-3}$, while those obtained for isolated galaxies are in the range of $N_{\rm e}=40-137\: \rm cm^{-3}$. Comparing the observed emission lines with predictions of photoionization models, we verified that almost all the \ion{H}{ii} regions of the galaxies AM\,1054A, AM\,2058B, and AM\,2306B, have emission lines excited by shock gas. For the remaining galaxies, only few HII regions has emission lines excited by shocks, such as in AM\,2322B (1 point), and AM\,2322A (4 points). No correlation is obtained between the presence of shocks and electron densities. Indeed, the highest electron density values found in our sample do not belong to the objects with gas shock excitation. We emphasize the importance of considering theses quantities especially when the metallicity is derived for these types of systems.

Photometry and Dynamics of the Minor Merger AM1219-430 with Gemini GMOS-S

We present an observational study of the interaction effect on the dynamics and morphology of the minor merger AM1219-430. This work is based on r' and g' images and long-slit spectra obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph at the Gemini South Telescope. We detected a tidal tail in the main galaxy (AM1219A) and a bridge of material connecting the galaxies. In luminosity, AM1219A is about 3.8 times brighter than the secondary (AM1219B). The surface brightness profile of AM1219A was decomposed into bulge and disc components. The profile shows a light excess of ~ 53 % due to the contribution of star-forming regions, which is typical of starburst galaxies. On the other hand, the surface brightness profile of AM1219B shows a lens structure in addition to the bulge and disc. The scale lengths and central magnitudes of the disc structure of both galaxies agree with the average values derived for galaxies with no sign of ongoing interaction or disturbed morphology. The Sérsic index (n<2), the effective and scale radii of the bulge of both galaxies are typical of pseudo-bulges. The rotation curve of AM1219A derived from the emission line of ionized gas is quite asymmetric, suggesting a gas perturbed by interaction. We explore all possible values of stellar and dark matter masses. The overall best-fitting solution for the mass distribution of AM1219A was found with M/L for bulge and disc of M/L_b=2.8_-0.4^+0.4 and M/L_d=2.4_-0.2^+0.3, respectively, and a Navarro, Frenk and White profile of M_200=2.0_-0.4^+0.5 x10^12 M_sun and c=16.0_-1.1^+1.2. The estimated dynamical mass is 1.6x10^11 M_sun, within a radius of ~ 10.6 kpc.

A study of the remarkable galaxy system AM 546-324 (the core of Abell S0546)

We report first results of an investigation of the tidally disturbed galaxy system AM\,546-324, whose two principal galaxies 2MFGC 04711 and AM\,0546-324 (NED02) were previously classified as interacting doubles. This system was selected to study the interaction of ellipticals in a moderately dense environment. We provide spectral characteristics of the system and present an observational study of the interaction effects on the morphology, kinematics, and stellar population of these galaxies. The study is based on long-slit spectrophotometric data in the range of $\sim$ 4500-8000 $Å$ obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spetrograph at Gemini South (GMOS-S). We have used the stellar population synthesis code STARLIGHT to investigate the star formation history of these galaxies. The Gemini/GMOS-S direct r-G0303 broad band pointing image was used to enhance and study fine morphological structures. The main absorption lines in the spectra were used to determine the radial velocity. Along the whole long-slit signal, the spectra of the Shadowy galaxy (discovered by us), 2MFGC 04711, and AM\,0546-324 (NED02) resemble that of an early-type galaxy. We estimated redshifts of z= 0.0696, z= 0.0693 and z= 0.0718, corresponding to heliocentric velocities of 20\,141 km s$^{-1}$, 20\,057 km s$^{-1}$, and 20\,754 km s$^{-1}$ for the Shadowy galaxy, 2MFGC 04711 and AM\,0546-324 (NED02), respectively. ...

The effects of the interaction on the kinematics, stellar population and metallicity of AM2322-821 with Gemini/GMOS

We present an observational study about the impacts of the interactions in the kinematics, stellar populations, and oxygen abundances of the components of the galaxy pair AM\,2322-821. A fairly symmetric rotation curve for the companion (AM\,2322B) galaxy with a deprojected velocity amplitude of 110 km s$^{-1}$ was obtained, and a dynamical mass of $ 1.1 - 1.3 \times 10^{10} M_{\sun}$ within a radius of 4 kpc was estimated using this deprojected velocity. Asymmetries in the radial velocity field were detected for the companion, very likely due the interaction between the galaxies. The interaction between the main and companion galaxies was modelled using numerical N-body/hydrodynamical simulations, with the result indicating that the current stage of the system would be about 90 Myr after perigalacticum. The spatial variation in the distribution of the stellar-population components in both galaxies was analysed using the stellar population synthesis code {\sc STARLIGHT}. The companion galaxy is dominated by a very young (t $ \leq 1\times10^{8}$ yr) population, with the fraction of this population to the total flux at $λ\, 5\,870\, Å$, increasing outwards in the galaxy disc. On the other hand, the stellar population of AM\,2322A is heterogeneous along the slit positions observed. Spatial profiles of oxygen abundance in the gaseous phase were obtained using the diagnostic diagram R23 vs. [OIII]/[OII], where we compared the observed values with the ones obtained from photoionization models. Such gradients of oxygen abundance are significantly flatter for this pair of galaxies than in typical isolated spiral galaxies. This metallicity distribution is interpreted as the gradients having been destroyed by interaction-induced gas flows from the outer parts to the centre of the galaxy

A first study of the galaxy HRG 2304 and its companion AM 1646-795 (NED01)

Aims. We report the first study of the peculiar ring-like galaxy HRG 2304 (NED02),which was previously classified as a ring galaxy with an elliptical smooth ring. This object was selected to prove that it is a candidate for the Solitaire-type ring galaxies in an early stage of ring formation. The main goal of this work is to provide the spectral characteristics of the current object and its companion AM 1646-795 (NED01). Methods. The study is based on spectroscopic observations in the optical band to highlight the characteristics of this interacting galaxy. To investigate the star formation history of HRG 2304 we used the stellar population synthesis code STARLIGHT. The direct V and B broad band images were used to enhance some fine structures. Results. Along the entire long-slit signal, the spectra of HRG 2304 and its companion resemble that of an early-type galaxy. We estimated a heliocentric systemic redshift of z = 0.0415, corresponding to heliocentric velocities of 12449 km s-1 for HRG 2304 (NED02) and 12430 km s-1 for AM1646-795 (NED01). The spatial variation in the contribution of the stellar population components for both objects are dominated by an old stellar population 2x10^9 < t < 13x10^9 yr. The observed radial-velocity distribution and the fine structures around HRG 2304 suggest an ongoing tidal interaction of both galaxies. Conclusions. The spectroscopic results and the morphological peculiarities of HRG 2304 can be adequately interpreted as an ongoing interaction with the companion galaxy. Both galaxies are early-type, the companion is elliptical, and the smooth distribution of the material around HRG 2304 and its off-center nucleus in the direction of AM1646-795 (NED01) characterize HRG 2304 as a Solitaire-type galaxy candidate in an early stage of ring formation.

Electron temperature fluctuations in NGC 346

The existence and origin of large spatial temperature fluctuations in HII regions and planetary nebulae are assumed to explain the differences between the heavy element abundances inferred from collisionally excited and recombination lines, although this interpretation remains significantly controversial. We investigate the spatial variation in electron temperature inside NGC 346, the brightest HII region in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Long slit spectrophotometric data of high signal-to-noise were employed to derive the electron temperature from measurements derived from localized observations of the [OIII]($\lambda4959 + \lambda5007)/\lambda4363$ ratio in three directions across the nebula. The electron temperature was estimated in 179 areas of 5$^{\prime\prime}\times1.5^{\prime\prime}$ of size distributed along three different declinations. A largely homogeneous temperature distribution was found with a mean temperature of 12 269 K and a dispersion of 6.1%. After correcting for pure measurements errors, a temperature fluctuation on the plane of the sky of $t^2_{\rm s} = 0.0021$ (corresponding to a dispersion of 4.5%) was obtained, which indicates a 3D temperature fluctuation parameter of $t^2 \approx 0.008$. A large scale gradient in temperature of the order of $-5.7\pm1.3$ K arcsec$^{-1}$ was found. The magnitude of the temperature fluctuations observed agrees with the large scale variations in temperature predicted by standard photoionization models, but is too small to explain the abundance discrepancy problem. However, the possible existence of small spatial scale temperature variations is not excluded.

Kinematics and physical properties of Southern interacting galaxies: the minor merger AM 2306-721

We present an observational study about the effects of the interactions in the kinematics, stellar population and abundances of the components of the galaxy pair AM2306-721. Rotation curves for the main and companion galaxies were obtained, showing a deprojected velocity amplitude of 175 km/s and 185 km/s, respectively. The interaction between the main and companion galaxies was modeled using numerical N-body/hydrodynamical simulations, with the result indicating that the current stage of the merger would be about 250 Myr after perigalacticum. The spatial variation in the distribution of the stellar population components in both galaxies was analysed by fitting combinations of stellar population models of different age groups. The central region of main galaxy is dominated by an old (5-10 Gyr) population, while significant contributions from a young (200 Myr) and intermediate (1 Gyr) components are found in the disk, being enhanced in the direction of the tidal features. The stellar population of the companion galaxy is overall much younger, being dominated by components with 1 Gyr or less, quite widely spread over the whole disk. Spatial profiles of the oxygen abundance were obtained from the a grid of photoionization models using the R23 line ratio. The disk of the main galaxy shows a clear radial gradient, while the companion galaxy presents an oxygen abundance relatively homogeneous across the disk. The absence of an abundance gradient in the secondary galaxy is interpreted in terms of mixing by gas flows from the outer parts to the center of the galaxy due to the gravitational interaction with the more massive primary.
