Fast Microwave-free State Preparation and Measurement of Superconducting Qubits

Fast, high-fidelity, scalable state preparation and measurement is critical to the realization of a quantum computing system. The state-of-the-art methods for preparation and readout of superconducting qubits require finely tuned microwave signals and ~100 ns of measurement time, which are major obstacles to the scalability and performance of superconducting quantum computers. Here, we have demonstrated novel, microwave-free methods for both preparation and readout of superconducting qubits with >99% fidelity in only 10 ns for either operation while maintaining qubit coherence. This technology is compatible with scalable superconducting digital control systems, and using quantum flux parametrons for amplification, we demonstrated full quantum-to-digital conversion in only 15 ns, which is an order of magnitude faster than state-of-the-art microwave-based techniques.

Spin-Mediated Direct Photon Scattering by Plasmons in BiTeI

We use polarization resolved Raman spectroscopy to demonstrate that for a 3D giant Rashba system the bulk plasmon collective mode can directly couple to the Raman response even in the long wavelength $\mathbf q \rightarrow 0$ limit. Although conventional theory predicts the plasmon spectral weight to be suppressed as the square of its quasi-momentum and thus negligibly weak in the Raman spectra, we observe a sharp in-gap plasmon mode in the Raman spectrum of BiTeI below the Rashba continuum. This coupling, in a polar system with spin-orbit coupling, occurs without assistance from phonons when the incoming photon excitation is resonant with Rashba-split intermediate states. We discuss the distinctive features of BiTeI's giant Rashba system band structure that enable the direct observation of plasmon in Raman scattering.

Chiral Electronic Excitations in a Quasi-2D Rashba System BiTeI

The optical transitions between spin-polarized bands of the quasi-two dimensional Rashba system BiTeI are investigated using polarization resolved resonant Raman spectroscopy. We detect chiral excitations between states with opposite helicity and compare spectra to calculations within a three-band model. Using the resonant Raman excitation profile, we deduce the Rashba parameters and band gaps of the higher conduction bands near the Fermi level, and compare the parameters to values obtained by ab initio density function theory (DFT).

Non-thermalization in trapped atomic ion spin chains

Linear arrays of trapped and laser cooled atomic ions are a versatile platform for studying emergent phenomena in strongly-interacting many-body systems. Effective spins are encoded in long-lived electronic levels of each ion and made to interact through laser mediated optical dipole forces. The advantages of experiments with cold trapped ions, including high spatiotemporal resolution, decoupling from the external environment, and control over the system Hamiltonian, are used to measure quantum effects not always accessible in natural condensed matter samples. In this review we highlight recent work using trapped ions to explore a variety of non-ergodic phenomena in long-range interacting spin-models which are heralded by memory of out-of-equilibrium initial conditions. We observe long-lived memory in static magnetizations for quenched many-body localization and prethermalization, while memory is preserved in the periodic oscillations of a driven discrete time crystal state.

Observation of Prethermalization in Long-Range Interacting Spin Chains

Statistical mechanics can predict thermal equilibrium states for most classical systems, but for an isolated quantum system there is no general understanding on how equilibrium states dynamically emerge from the microscopic Hamiltonian. For instance, quantum systems that are near-integrable usually fail to thermalize in an experimentally realistic time scale and, instead, relax to quasi-stationary prethermal states that can be described by statistical mechanics when approximately conserved quantities are appropriately included in a generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE). Here we experimentally study the relaxation dynamics of a chain of up to 22 spins evolving under a long-range transverse field Ising Hamiltonian following a sudden quench. For sufficiently long-ranged interactions the system relaxes to a new type of prethermal state that retains a strong memory of the initial conditions. In this case, the prethermal state cannot be described by a GGE, but rather arises from an emergent double-well potential felt by the spin excitations. This result shows that prethermalization occurs in a significantly broader context than previously thought, and reveals new challenges for a generic understanding of the thermalization of quantum systems, particularly in the presence of long-range interactions.
