Extreme vortex pinning in the non-centrosymmetric superconductor CePt$_{3}$Si

We report on the vortex dynamics of a single crystal of the non-centrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt$_{3}$Si. Decays of the remnant magnetization display a clean logarithmic time dependence with rates that follow the temperature dependence expected from the Kim-Anderson theory. The creep rates are lower than observed in any other centrosymmetric superconductor and are not caused by high critical currents. On the contrary, the critical current in CePt$_{3}$Si is considerably lower than in other superconductors with strong vortex pinning indicating that an alternative impediment on the flux line motion might be at work in this superconductor.

New structural and magnetic aspects of the nanotube system Na2V3O7

We present new experimental results of low temperature x-ray synchrotron diffraction, neutron scattering and very low temperature (mK-range) bulk measurements on the nanotube system ${\tube}$. The crystal structure determined from our data is similar to the previously proposed model (P. Millet {\it et al.} J. Solid State Chem. $\bf{147}$, 676 (1999)), but also deviates from it in significant details. The structure comprises nanotubes along the c-axis formed by stacking units of two V-rings buckled in the $ab$-plane. The space group is P$\bar{3}$ and the composition is nonstoichiometric, Na(2-x)V3O7, x=0.17. The thermal evolution of the lattice parameters reveals anisotropic lattice compression on cooling. Neutron scattering experiments monitor a very weak magnetic signal at energies from -20 to 9 meV. New magnetic susceptibility, specific heat measurements and decay of remanent magnetization in the 30 mK - 300 mK range reveal that the previously observed transition at ~76 mK is spin-glass like with no long-range order. Presented experimental observations do not support models of isolated clusters, but are compatible with a model of odd-legged S=1/2 spin tubes possibly segmented into fragments with different lengths.

Vortex avalanches in the non-centrosymmetric superconductor Li2Pt3B

We investigated the vortex dynamics in the non-centrosymmetric superconductor Li_2Pt_3B in the temperature range 0.1 K - 2.8 K. Two different logarithmic creep regimes in the decay of the remanent magnetization from the Bean critical state have been observed. In the first regime, the creep rate is extraordinarily small, indicating the existence of a new, very effective pinning mechanism. At a certain time a vortex avalanche occurs that increases the logarithmic creep rate by a factor of about 5 to 10 depending on the temperature. This may indicate that certain barriers against flux motion are present and they can be opened under increased pressure exerted by the vortices. A possible mechanism based on the barrier effect of twin boundaries is briefly discussed.

Unusual magnetic properties of the low-dimensional quantum magnet Na2V3O7

We report the results of low-temperature measurements of the specific heat Cp(T), ac susceptibility chi(T) and 23Na nuclear magnetic resonance NMR of Na2V3O7. At liquid He temperatures Cp(T)/T exhibits broad field-dependent maxima, which shift to higher temperatures upon increasing the applied magnetic field H. Below 1.5 K the ac magnetic susceptibility chi(T) follows a Curie-Weiss law and exhibits a cusp at 0.086 mK which indicates a phase transition at very low temperatures. These results support the previous conjecture that Na2V3O7 is close to a quantum critical point (QCP) at mu_{0}H = 0 T. The entire data set, including results of measurements of the NMR spin-lattice relaxation 1/T1(T), reveals a complex magnetic behavior at low temperatures. We argue that it is due to a distribution of singlet-triplet energy gaps of dimerized V moments. The dimerization process evolves over a rather broad temperature range around and below 100 K. At the lowest temperatures the magnetic properties are dominated by the response of only a minor fraction of the V moments.

Pronounced enhancement of the lower critical field and critical current deep in the superconducting state of PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$

We have observed an unexpected enhancement of the lower critical field $H_{c1}(T)$ and the critical current $I_{c}(T)$ deep in the superconducting state below $T \approx 0.6$ K ($T/T_{c} \approx 0.3$) in the filled skutterudite heavy fermion superconductor PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$. From a comparison of the behavior of $H_{c1}(T)$ with that of the heavy fermion superconductors U$_{1-x}$Th$_x$Be$_{13}$ and UPt$_3$, we speculate that the enhancement of $H_{c1}(T)$ and $I_{c}(T)$ in PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ reflects a transition into another superconducting phase that occurs below $T/T_{c} \approx 0.3$. An examination of the literature reveals unexplained anomalies in other physical properties of PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ near $T/T_{c} \approx 0.3$ that correlate with the features we have observed in $H_{c1}(T)$ and $I_{c}(T)$.

Transition into a low temperature superconducting phase of unconventional pinning in Sr_2RuO_4

We have found a sharp transition in the vortex creep rates at a temperature T^\ast=0.05 T_c in a single crystal of Sr_2RuO_4 (T_{c}=1.03 K) by means of magnetic relaxation measurements. For T<T^\ast, the initial creep rates drop to undetectable low levels. One explanation for this transition into a phase with such extremely low vortex creep is that the low-temperature phase of Sr_2RuO_4 breaks time reversal symmetry. In that case, degenerate domain walls separating discreetly degenerate states of a superconductor can act as very strong pinning centers.

Low field vortex dynamics over seven time decades in a Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ} single crystal for temperatures 13 K < T < 83 K

Using a custom made dc-SQUID magnetometer, we have measured the time relaxation of the remanent magnetization M_rem of a Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ} single crystal from the fully critical state for temperatures 13 K < T < 83 K. The measurements cover a time window of seven decades 10^{-2} s < t < 10^5 s, so that the current density j can be studied from values very close to j_c down to values considerably smaller than j_c. From the data we have obtained: (i) the flux creep activation barriers U as a function of current density j, (ii) the current-voltage characteristics E(j) in a typical range of 10^{-7} V/cm to 10^{-15} V/cm, and (iii) the critical current density j_c(0) at T = 0. Three different regimes of vortex dynamics are observed: For temperatures T < 20 K the activation barrier U(j) is logarithmic, no unique functional dependence U(j) could be found for the intermediate temperature interval 20 K < T < 40 K, and finally for T > 40 K the activation barrier U(j) follows a power-law behavior with an exponent mu = 0.6. From the analysis of the data within the weak collective pinning theory for strongly layered superconductors, it is argued that for temperatures T < 20 K pancake-vortices are pinned individually, while for temperatures T > 40 K pinning involves large collectively pinned vortex bundles. A description of the vortex dynamics in the intermediate temperature interval 20 K < T < 40 K is given on the basis of a qualitative low field phase diagram of the vortex state in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}. Within this description a second peak in the magnetization loop should occur for temperatures between 20 K and 40 K, as it has been observed in several magnetization measurements in the literature.

Lower critical field H_c1 and barriers for vortex entry in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+delta} crystals

The penetration field H_p of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+delta} crystals is determined from magnetization curves for different field sweep rates dH/dt and temperatures. The obtained results are consistent with theoretical reports in the literature about vortex creep over surface and geometrical barriers. The frequently observed low-temperature upturn of H_p is shown to be related to metastable configurations due to barriers for vortex entry. Data of the true lower critical field H_c1 are presented. The low-temperature dependence of H_c1 is consistent with a superconducting state with nodes in the gap function. [PACS numbers: 74.25.Bt, 74.60.Ec, 74.60.Ge, 74.72.Hs]

Magnetic imaging of the paramagnetic Meissner effect in the granular high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox

We have imaged the spatial distribution of magnetic flux on a granular sample of the high-temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox using a scanning SQUID microscope. Our results establish the presence of spontaneous orbital magnetic moments which were suggested to be the origin of the paramagnetic response of these materials. The signature of the orbital magnetic moments is a rather broad distribution of local magnetic fields at the surface of the sample. A simple model for the distribution is presented.
