On reversible, endoreversible, and irreversible heat device cycles versus Carnot cycle: A pedagogical approach to account for losses

In this work we analyze the deviations of reversible cycles (for both heat engines and refrigerators) from the corresponding Carnot cycle operating between the same extreme temperatures and deviations of irreversible cycles from its corresponding reversible realization while putting emphasis on the corresponding losses. The endoreversible models fit in the proposed framework. Two suitable loss factors, which don't need the explicit calculation of entropy variations, are introduced. The behavior of these factors and their interplay allow for a clear and pedagogical visualization of where external and internal irreversibilities are located and their intensities in terms of the main variables describing the cycle. The analysis could be used as a starting point for more advanced studies on modeling and optimization of real devices and installations.

Heat devices in nonlinear irreversible thermodynamics

We present results obtained by using nonlinear irreversible models for heat devices. In particular, we focus on the global performance characteristics, the maximum efficiency and the efficiency at maximum power regimes for heat engines, and the maximum coefficient of performance (COP) and the COP at maximum cooling power regimes for refrigerators. We analyze the key role played by the interplay between irreversibilities coming from heat leaks and internal dissipations. We also discuss the relationship between these results and those obtained by different models.

Coefficient of performance under optimized figure of merit in minimally nonlinear irreversible refrigerator

We apply the model of minimally nonlinear irreversible heat engines developed by Izumida and Okuda [EPL {\bf 97}, 10004 (2012)] to refrigerators. The model assumes extended Onsager relations including a new nonlinear term accounting for dissipation effects. The bounds for the optimized regime under an appropriate figure of merit and the tight-coupling condition are analyzed and successfully compared with those obtained previously for low-dissipation Carnot refrigerators in the finite-time thermodynamics framework. Besides, we study the bounds for the nontight-coupling case numerically. We also introduce a leaky low-dissipation Carnot refrigerator and show that it serves as an example of the minimally nonlinear irreversible refrigerator, by calculating its Onsager coefficients explicitly.

Coefficient of performance at maximum figure of merit and its bounds for low-dissipation Carnot-like refrigerators

The figure of merit for refrigerators performing finite-time Carnot-like cycles between two reservoirs at temperature $T_h$ and $T_c$ ($<T_h$) is optimized. It is found that the coefficient of performance at maximum figure of merit is bounded between 0 and $(\sqrt{9+8\varepsilon_c}-3)/2$ for the low-dissipation refrigerators, where $\varepsilon_c =T_c/(T_h-T_c)$ is the Carnot coefficient of performance for reversible refrigerators. These bounds can be reached for extremely asymmetric low-dissipation cases when the ratio between the dissipation constants of the processes in contact with the cold and hot reservoirs approaches to zero or infinity, respectively. The observed coefficients of performance for real refrigerators are located in the region between the lower and upper bounds, which is in good agreement with our theoretical estimation.

On cycle-to-cycle heat release variations in a simulated spark ignition heat engine

The cycle-by-cycle variations in heat release for a simulated spark-ignited engine are analyzed within a turbulent combustion model in terms of some basic parameters: the characteristic length of the unburned eddies entrained within the flame front, a characteristic turbulent speed, and the location of the ignition kernel. The evolution of the simulated time series with the fuel-air equivalence ratio, phi, from lean mixtures to over stoichiometric conditions, is examined and compared with previous experiments. Fluctuations on the characteristic length of unburned eddies are found to be essential to simulate heat release cycle-to-cycle variations and recover experimental results. Relative to the non-linear analysis of the system, it is remarkable that at fuel ratios around phi=0.65, embedding and surrogate procedures show that the dimensionality of the system is small.
