AFLOW$π$: A minimalist approach to high-throughput ab initio calculations including the generation of tight-binding hamiltonians

Tight-binding models provide a conceptually transparent and computationally efficient method to represent the electronic properties of materials. With AFLOW$π$ we introduce a framework for high-throughput first principles calculations that automatically generates tight-binding hamiltonians without any additional input. Several additional features are included in AFLOW$π$ with the intent to simplify the self-consistent calculation of Hubbard U corrections, the calculations of phonon dispersions, elastic properties, complex dielectric constants, and electronic transport coefficients. As examples we show how to compute the optical properties of layered nitrides in the $AM$N$_2$ family, and the elastic and vibrational properties of binary halides with CsCl and NaCl structure.

Point-contact Andreev-reflection spectroscopy in segregation-free Mg_{1-x}Al_{x}B_2 single crystals up to x=0.32

We present new results of point-contact Andreev-reflection (PCAR) spectroscopy in single-phase Mg_{1-x}Al_{x}B_{2} single crystals with x up to 0.32. Fitting the conductance curves of our point contacts with the two-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model allowed us to extract the gap amplitudes Delta_{sigma} and Delta_{pi}. The gap values agree rather well with other PCAR results in Al-doped crystals and polycrystals up to x=0.2 reported in literature, and extend them to higher Al contents. In the low-doping regime, however, we observed an increase in the small gap Delta_{pi} on increasing x (or decreasing the local critical temperature of the junctions, T_{c}^{A}) which is not as clearly found in other samples. On further decreasing T_{c}^{A} below 30 K, both the gaps decrease and, up to the highest doping level x=0.32 and down to T_{c}^{A}= 12 K, no gap merging is observed. A detailed analysis of the data within the two-band Eliashberg theory shows that this gap trend can be explained as being mainly due to the band filling and to an increase in the interband scattering which is necessary to account for the increase in Delta_{pi} at low Al contents (x < 0.1). We suggest to interpret the following decrease of Delta_{pi} for T_{c}^{A} < 30 K as being governed by the onset of inhomogeneity and disorder in the Al distribution that partly mask the intrinsic effects of doping and is not taken into account in standard theoretical approaches.

Point-contact spectroscopy in neutron-irradiated Mg^{11}B_2

We report on recent results of point-contact spectroscopy measurements in Mg^{11}B_2 polycrystals irradiated at different neutron fluences up to 1.4 x 10^{20} cm^{-2}. The point contacts were made by putting a small drop of Ag paint -- acting as the counterelectrode -- on the cleaved surface of the samples. The gap amplitudes were extracted from the experimental conductance curves, showing Andreev-reflection features, through a two-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk fit and reported as a function of the Andreev critical temperature of the junctions, TcA. The resulting Delta_sigma(TcA) and Delta_pi(TcA) curves show a clear merging of the gaps when TcA ~ 9K that perfectly confirms the findings of specific-heat measurements in the same samples. Anomalous contacts with TcA > Tc (being Tc the bulk critical temperature) were often obtained, particularly in samples irradiated at very high fluences. Their fit gave a different dependence of Delta_pi on TcA. The possible origin of these contacts is discussed in terms of local current-induced annealing and/or nanoscale inhomogeneities observed by STM in the most irradiated samples.

The effect of magnetic impurities in a two-band superconductor: A point-contact study of Mn-substituted MgB2 single crystals

We present the first results of directional point-contact measurements in Mg_{1-x}Mn_{x}B_2 single crystals, with x up to 0.015 and bulk T_c down to 13.3 K. The order parameters Delta_{sigma} and Delta_{pi} were obtained by fitting the conductance curves with the two-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) model. Both Delta_{pi} and Delta_{sigma} decrease with the critical temperature of the junctions T_c^A, but remain clearly distinct up to the highest Mn content. Once analyzed within the Eliashberg theory, the results indicate that spin-flip scattering is dominant in the sigma band, as also confirmed by first-principle band structure calculations.

Surface nano-patterning through styrene adsorption on Si(100)

We present an ab initio study of the structural and electronic properties of styrene molecules adsorbed on the dimerized Si(100) surface at different coverages, ranging from the single-molecule to the full monolayer. The adsorption mechanism primarily involves the vinyl group via a [2+2] cycloaddition process that leads to the formation of covalent Si-C bonds and a local surface derelaxation, while it leaves the phenyl group almost unperturbed. The investigation of the functionalized surface as a function of the coverage (e.g. 0.5 -- 1 ML) and of the substrate reconstruction reveals two major effects. The first results from Si dimer-vinyl interaction and concerns the controlled variation of the energy bandgap of the interface. The second is associated to phenyl-phenyl interactions, which gives rise to a regular pattern of electronic wires at surface, stemming from the pi-pi coupling. These findings suggest a rationale for tailoring the surface nano-patterning of the surface, in a controlled way.

Evidence for Single-gap Superconductivity in Mg(B_{1-x}C_x)_2 Single Crystals with x=0.132 from Point-Contact Spectroscopy

We report the results of the first directional point-contact measurements in Mg(B_{1-x}C_{x})_2 single crystals with 0.047 <= x <= 0.132. The two-gap superconductivity typical of MgB_2 persists up to x=0.105. In this region, the values of the gaps Delta_{sigma} and Delta_{pi} were determined by fitting the Andreev-reflection conductance curves with a two-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) model, and confirmed by the single-band BTK fit of the sigma- and pi-band conductances, separated by means of a magnetic field. At x=0.132, when T_{c}=19 K, we clearly observed for the first time the merging of the two gaps into one of amplitude Delta~3 meV.

First principle theory of correlated transport through nano-junctions

We report the inclusion of electron-electron correlation in the calculation of transport properties within an ab initio scheme. A key step is the reformulation of Landauer's approach in terms of an effective transmittance for the interacting electron system. We apply this framework to analyze the effect of short range interactions on Pt atomic wires and discuss the coherent and incoherent correction to the mean-field approach.

A Point-Contact Study of the Superconducting Gaps in Al-Substituted and C-Substituted MgB_2 Single Crystals

We present the results of directional point-contact spectroscopy in state-of-the-art Mg_{1-x}Al_xB_2 and Mg(B_{1-y}C_{y})_2 single crystals produced at ETH, Zurich. Fitting the conductance curves of our point contacts, that always feature Andreev reflection structures, we obtained the doping dependence of the gap amplitudes. The results are discussed in comparison with other experimental findings and relevant theoretical predictions. We conclude that the physics of Al-substituted crystals at x > 0.09 might be governed by phase segregation, while C-substituted crystals unexpectedly show a doping-induced transition to single-gap superconductivity at y=0.132.

Point-contact study of gap amplitude and symmetry in RuSr_2GdCu_2O_8

We present the results of point-contact spectroscopy measurements in polycrystalline RuSr_2GdCu_2O_8 samples previously characterized from both the structural and the electrical point of view. AC susceptibility and resistivity measurements, as well as SEM and optical microscopy, indicate that the polycrystalline material is made up of small, weakly connected grains. Possibly because of this morphology, point-contact measurements turned out to be rather difficult. Best reproducibility of the conductance curves was achieved in point contacts obtained by pressing Au or Pt-Ir tips on the surface of the samples. The low-temperature conductance curves reproducibly show a clear zero-bias cusp that might be interpreted as due to Andreev reflection at the normal metal-superconductor interface in the case where the superconducting order parameter has a pure d-wave symmetry - even though alternative explanations cannot be ruled out. In this paper we show that these curves can indeed be fitted, in the framework of the generalised BTK model, by using pure d-wave symmetry and a gap of the order of 6 meV. Finally, we present the temperature dependence of the conductance curves from 4.2 K up to the critical temperature of the junctions.

Point-Contact Spectroscopy in MgB_2: from Fundamental Physics to Thin-Film Characterization

In this paper we highlight the advantages of using point-contact spectroscopy (PCS) in multigap superconductors like MgB_2, both as a fundamental research tool and as a non-destructive diagnostic technique for the optimization of thin-film characteristics. We first present some results of crucial fundamental interest obtained by directional PCS in MgB_2 single crystals, for example the temperature dependence of the gaps and of the critical fields and the effect of a magnetic field on the gap amplitudes. Then, we show how PCS can provide useful information about the surface properties of MgB_2 thin films (e.g. Tc, gap amplitude(s), clean or dirty-limit conditions) in view of their optimization for the fabrication of tunnel and Josephson junctions for applications in superconducting electronics.

The Magnetic-field Dependence of the Gaps in a Two-band Superconductor: A Point-contact Study of MgB_2 Single Crystals

We present the results of directional point-contact measurements in MgB_2 single crystals, in magnetic fields up to 9 T parallel to the c axis. By fitting the conductance curves of our point contacts -- showing clear Andreev-reflection features -- with a generalized Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model, we were able to extract the values of the two gaps Delta_sigma and Delta_pi. The comparison of the resulting Delta_sigma(B) and Delta_pi(B) curves to the theoretical predictions of the two-band model in dirty limit, recently appeared in literature, allows the first direct test of this model and gives a clear and quantitative proof that the pi band, even in the best single crystals, is in the moderate dirty limit.

Directional point-contact spectroscopy of MgB2 single crystals in magnetic fields: two-band superconductivity and critical fields

The results of the first directional point-contact measurements in MgB2 single crystals, in the presence of magnetic fields up to 9 T either parallel or perpendicular to the ab planes, are presented. By applying suitable magnetic fields, we separated the partial contributions of the sigma and pi bands to the total Andreev-reflection conductance. Their fit with the BTK model allowed a very accurate determination of the temperature dependency of the gaps (Delta_sigma and Delta_pi), that resulted in close agreement with the predictions of the two-band models for MgB2. We also obtained, for the first time with point-contact spectroscopy, the temperature dependence of the (anisotropic) upper critical field of the sigma band and of the (isotropic) upper critical field of the pi band.

Spontaneous polarization and piezoelectricity in boron nitride nanotubes

Ab initio calculations of the spontaneous polarization and piezoelectric properties of boron nitride nanotubes show that they are excellent piezoelectric systems with response values larger than those of piezoelectric polymers. The intrinsic chiral symmetry of the nanotubes induces an exact cancellation of the total spontaneous polarization in ideal, isolated nanotubes of arbitrary indices. Breaking of this symmetry by inter-tube interaction or elastic deformations induces spontaneous polarization comparable to those of wurtzite semiconductors.

G-quartet biomolecular nanowires

We present a first-principle investigation of quadruple helix nanowires, consisting of stacked planar hydrogen-bonded guanine tetramers. Our results show that long wires form and are stable in potassium-rich conditions. We present their electronic bandstructure and discuss the interpretation in terms of effective wide-bandgap semiconductors. The microscopic structural and electronic properties of the guanine quadruple helices make them suitable candidates for molecular nanoelectronics.

Self-assembled guanine ribbons as wide-bandgap semiconductors

We present a first principle study about the stability and the electronic properties of a new biomolecular solid-state material, obtained by the self-assembling of guanine (G) molecules. We consider hydrogen-bonded planar ribbons in isolated and stacked configurations. These aggregates present electronic properties similar to inorganic wide-bandgap semiconductors. The formation of Bloch-type orbitals is observed along the stacking direction, while it is negligible in the ribbon plane. Global band-like conduction may be affected by a dipole-field which spontaneously arises along the ribbon axis. Our results indicate that G-ribbon assemblies are promising materials for biomolecular nanodevices, consistently with recent experimental results.

Ab-initio study of model guanine assemblies: The role of pi-pi coupling and band transport

Several assemblies of guanine molecules are investigated by means of first-principle calculations. Such structures include stacked and hydrogen-bonded dimers, as well as vertical columns and planar ribbons, respectively, obtained by periodically replicating the dimers. Our results are in good agreement with experimental data for isolated molecules, isolated dimers, and periodic ribbons. For stacked dimers and columns, the stability is affected by the relative charge distribution of the pi orbitals in adjacent guanine molecules. pi-pi coupling in some stacked columns induces dispersive energy bands, while no dispersion is identified in the planar ribbons along the connections of hydrogen bonds. The implications for different materials comprised of guanine aggregates are discussed. The bandstructure of dispersive configurations may justify a contribution of band transport (Bloch type) in the conduction mechanism of deoxyguanosine fibres, while in DNA-like configurations band transport should be negligible.

Andreev reflection in Au/La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} point-contact junctions: separation between pseudogap and phase-coherence gap

We made point-contact measurements with Au tips on La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} samples with 0.08 < x < 0.20 to investigate the relationship between superconducting gap and pseudogap. We obtained junctions whose conductance curves presented typical Andreev reflection features at all temperatures from 4.2 K up to T_c^A close to the bulk T_c. Their fit with the BTK-Tanaka-Kashiwaya model gives good results if a (s+d)-wave gap symmetry is used. The doping dependence of the low temperature dominant isotropic gap component Delta_{s} follows very well the T_{c} vs. x curve. These results support the separation between the superconducting (Andreev) gap and the pseudogap measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and tunneling.

Temperature and junction-type dependency of Andreev reflection in MgB2

We studied the voltage and temperature dependency of the dynamic conductance of normal metal-MgB2 junctions obtained either with the point-contact technique (with Au and Pt tips) or by making Ag-paint spots on the surface of high-quality single-crystal-like MgB2 samples. The fit of the conductance curves with the generalized BTK model gives evidence of pure s-wave gap symmetry. The temperature dependency of the gap, measured in Ag-paint junctions (dirty limit), follows the standard BCS curve with 2Delta/kTc = 3.3. In out-of-plane, high-pressure point contacts we obtained almost ideal Andreev reflection characteristics showing a single small s-wave gap Delta = 2.6 +/- 0.2 (clean limit). These results support the two-gap model of superconductivity, the presence of a modified layer at the surface of the crystals and an important and non-conventional role of the impurities in MgB2.
