Comparison of nuclear hamiltonians using spectral function sum rules

Background: The energy weighted sum rules of the single-particle spectral functions provide a quantitative understanding of the fragmentation of nuclear states due to short-range and tensor correlations. Purpose: The aim of this paper is to compare on a quantitative basis the single-particle spectral function generated by different nuclear hamiltonians in symmetric nuclear matter using the first three energy-weighted moments. Method: The spectral functions are calculated in the framework of the self-consistent Green's function approach at finite temperature within a ladder resummation scheme. We analyze the first three moments of the spectral function and connect these to the correlations induced by the interactions between the nucleons. In particular, the variance of the spectral function is directly linked to the dispersive contribution of the self-energy. The discussion is centred around two- and three-body chiral nuclear interactions, with and without renormalization, but we also provide results obtained with the traditional phase-shift-equivalent CD-Bonn and Av18 potentials. Results: The variance of the spectral function is particularly sensitive to the short-range structure of the force, with hard-core interactions providing large variances. Chiral forces yield variances which are an order of magnitude smaller and, when tamed using the similarity renormalization group, the variance reduces significantly and in proportion to the renormalization scale. The presence of three-body forces does not substantially affect the results. Conclusions: The first three moments of the spectral function are useful tools in analysing the importance of correlations in nuclear ground states. In particular, the second-order moment provides a direct insight into dispersive contributions to the self-energy and its value is indicative of the fragmentation of single-particle states.

Measurements of prompt charm production cross-sections in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\mathrm{TeV}$

Production cross-sections of prompt charm mesons are measured with the first data from $pp$ collisions at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of $13\,\mathrm{TeV}$. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $4.98 \pm 0.19\,\mathrm{pb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment. The production cross-sections of $D^{0}$, $D^{+}$, $D_{s}^{+}$, and $D^{*+}$ mesons are measured in bins of charm meson transverse momentum, $p_{\mathrm{T}}$, and rapidity, $y$, and cover the range $0 < p_{\mathrm{T}} < 15\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$ and $2.0 < y < 4.5$. The inclusive cross-sections for the four mesons, including charge conjugation, within the range of $1 < p_{\mathrm{T}} < 8\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$ are found to be \begin{equation} σ(pp \to D^{0} X) = 2072 \pm 2 \pm 124\,μ\mathrm{b}\\ σ(pp \to D^{+} X) = 834 \pm 2 \pm \phantom{1}78\,μ\mathrm{b}\\ σ(pp \to D_{s}^{+} X) = 353 \pm 9 \pm \phantom{1}76\,μ\mathrm{b}\\ σ(pp \to D^{*+} X) = 784 \pm 4 \pm \phantom{1}87\,μ\mathrm{b} \end{equation} where the uncertainties are due to statistical and systematic uncertainties, respectively.

Measurement of forward $J/ψ$ production cross-sections in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

The production of $J/ψ$ mesons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV is studied with the \lhcb detector. Cross-section measurements are performed as a function of the transverse momentum $p_\mathrm{T}$ and the rapidity $y$ of the $J/ψ$ meson in the region $p_\mathrm{T}<14\mathrm{GeV}/c$ and $2.0<y<4.5$, for both prompt $J/ψ$ mesons and $J/ψ$ mesons from $b$-hadron decays. The production cross-sections integrated over the kinematic coverage are $15.03\pm 0.03\pm 0.94$ $μ$b for prompt $J/ψ$ and $2.25\pm 0.01\pm 0.14$ $μ$b for $J/ψ$ from $b$-hadron decays, assuming zero polarization of the $J/ψ$ meson. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The cross-section reported for $J/ψ$ mesons from $b$-hadron decays is used to extrapolate to a total $b\bar{b}$ cross-section. The ratios of the cross-sections with respect to $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV are also determined.

Measurements of the S-wave fraction in $B^{0}\rightarrow K^{+}π^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decays and the $B^{0}\rightarrow K^{\ast}(892)^{0}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ differential branching fraction

A measurement of the differential branching fraction of the decay ${B^{0}\rightarrow K^{\ast}(892)^{0}μ^{+}μ^{-}}$ is presented together with a determination of the S-wave fraction of the $K^+π^-$ system in the decay $B^{0}\rightarrow K^{+}π^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-}$. The analysis is based on $pp$-collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3\,fb$^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb experiment. The measurements are made in bins of the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system, $q^2$. Precise theoretical predictions for the differential branching fraction of $B^{0}\rightarrow K^{\ast}(892)^{0}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decays are available for the $q^2$ region $1.1<q^2<6.0\,{\rm GeV}^2/c^4$. In this $q^2$ region, for the $K^+π^-$ invariant mass range $796 < m_{Kπ} < 996\,{\rm MeV}/c^2$, the S-wave fraction of the $K^+π^-$ system in $B^{0}\rightarrow K^{+}π^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decays is found to be \begin{equation*} F_{\rm S} = 0.101\pm0.017({\rm stat})\pm0.009 ({\rm syst}), \end{equation*} and the differential branching fraction of $B^{0}\rightarrow K^{\ast}(892)^{0}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decays is determined to be \begin{equation*} {\rm d}\mathcal{B}/{\rm d} q^2 = (0.342_{\,-0.017}^{\,+0.017}({\rm stat})\pm{0.009}({\rm syst})\pm0.023({\rm norm}))\times 10^{-7}c^{4}/{\rm GeV}^{2}. \end{equation*} The differential branching fraction measurements presented are the most precise to date and are found to be in agreement with Standard Model predictions.

Measurements of long-range near-side angular correlations in $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=5$TeV proton-lead collisions in the forward region

Two-particle angular correlations are studied in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=5$TeV, collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on data recorded in two beam configurations, in which either the direction of the proton or that of the lead ion is analysed. The correlations are measured in the laboratory system as a function of relative pseudorapidity, $Δη$, and relative azimuthal angle, $Δϕ$, for events in different classes of event activity and for different bins of particle transverse momentum. In high-activity events a long-range correlation on the near side, $Δϕ\approx 0$, is observed in the pseudorapidity range $2.0<η<4.9$. This measurement of long-range correlations on the near side in proton-lead collisions extends previous observations into the forward region up to $η=4.9$. The correlation increases with growing event activity and is found to be more pronounced in the direction of the lead beam. However, the correlation in the direction of the lead and proton beams are found to be compatible when comparing events with similar absolute activity in the direction analysed.

Neutron matter from chiral two- and three-nucleon calculations up to N$^3$LO

Neutron matter is an ideal laboratory for nuclear interactions derived from chiral effective field theory since all contributions are predicted up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) in the chiral expansion. By making use of recent advances in the partial-wave decomposition of three- nucleon (3N) forces, we include for the first time N$^3$LO 3N interactions in many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) up to third order and in self-consistent Green's function theory (SCGF). Using these two complementary many-body frameworks we provide improved predictions for the equation of state of neutron matter at zero temperature and also analyze systematically the many-body convergence for different chiral EFT interactions. Furthermore, we present an extension of the normal-ordering framework to finite temperatures. These developments open the way to improved calculations of neutron-rich matter including estimates of theoretical uncertainties for astrophysical applications.

Measurement of the CKM angle $γ$ using $B^0 \rightarrow D K^{*0}$ with $D \rightarrow K^0_S π^+ π^-$ decays

A model-dependent amplitude analysis of the decay $B^0\rightarrow D(K^0_Sπ^+π^-) K^{*0}$ is performed using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0fb$^{-1}$, recorded at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8 TeV$ by the LHCb experiment. The CP violation observables $x_{\pm}$ and $y_{\pm}$, sensitive to the CKM angle $γ$, are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} x_- &=& -0.15 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.01, y_- &=& 0.25 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.01, x_+ &=& 0.05 \pm 0.24 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.01, y_+ &=& -0.65^{+0.24}_{-0.23} \pm 0.08 \pm 0.01, \end{eqnarray*} where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second systematic and the third arise from the uncertainty on the $D\rightarrow K^0_S π^+π^-$ amplitude model. These are the most precise measurements of these observables. They correspond to $γ=(80^{+21}_{-22})^{\circ}$ and $r_{B^0}=0.39\pm0.13$, where $r_{B^0}$ is the magnitude of the ratio of the suppressed and favoured $B^0\rightarrow D K^+ π^-$ decay amplitudes, in a $Kπ$ mass region of $\pm50 MeV$ around the $K^*(892)^0$ mass and for an absolute value of the cosine of the $K^{*0}$ decay angle larger than $0.4$.

Constraints on the unitarity triangle angle $γ$ from Dalitz plot analysis of $B^0 \to D K^+ π^-$ decays

The first study is presented of CP violation with an amplitude analysis of the Dalitz plot of $B^0 \to D K^+ π^-$ decays, with $D \to K^+ π^-$, $K^+ K^-$ and $π^+ π^-$. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to $3.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions collected with the LHCb detector. No significant CP violation effect is seen, and constraints are placed on the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle formed from elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix. Hadronic parameters associated with the $B^0 \to D K^*(892)^0$ decay are determined for the first time. These measurements can be used to improve the sensitivity to $γ$ of existing and future studies of the $B^0 \to D K^*(892)^0$ decay.

Measurement of the $CP$ asymmetry in $B_s^0-\overline{B}{}_s^0$ mixing

The $CP$ asymmetry in the mixing of $B_s^0$ and $\overline{B}{}_s^0$ mesons is measured in proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$, recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. Semileptonic $B_s^0$ and $\overline{B}{}_s^0$ decays are studied in the inclusive mode $D_s^{\mp} μ^{\pm} ν_μ X$ with the $D_s^{\mp}$ mesons reconstructed in the $K^+ K^- π^{\mp}$ final state. Correcting the observed charge asymmetry for detection and background effects, the $CP$ asymmetry is found to be $a_{\text{sl}}^s = (0.39 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.20) \% $, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This is the most precise measurement of $a_{\text{sl}}^s$ to date. It is consistent with the prediction from the Standard Model and will constrain new models of particle physics.

Measurement of $C\!P$ observables in $B^\pm \rightarrow D K^\pm$ and $B^\pm \rightarrow D π^\pm$ with two- and four-body $D$ decays

Measurements of $C\!P$ observables in $B^\pm \rightarrow D K^\pm$ and $B^\pm \rightarrow D π^\pm$ decays are presented where the $D$ meson is reconstructed in the final states $K^\pmπ^\mp$, $π^\pm K^\mp$, $K^+K^-$, $π^+π^-$, $K^\pmπ^\mp π^+ π^-$, $π^\pm K^\mp π^+ π^-$ and $π^+ π^- π^+ π^-$. This analysis uses a sample of charged $B$ mesons from $pp$ collisions collected by the LHCb experiment in 2011 and 2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$. Various \CP-violating effects are reported and together these measurements provide important input for the determination of the unitarity triangle angle $γ$. The analysis of the four-pion $D$ decay mode is the first of its kind.

A precise measurement of the $B^0$ meson oscillation frequency

The oscillation frequency, $Δm_d$, of $B^0$ mesons is measured using semileptonic decays with a $D^-$ or $D^{*-}$ meson in the final state, in a data sample of $pp$ collisions collected by the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0$\mbox{fb}^{-1}$. A combination of the two decay modes gives $Δm_d = (505.0 \pm 2.1 \pm 1.0) \rm \,ns^{-1}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This is the most precise single measurement of this parameter. It is compatible with the current world average and has similar precision.

Production of associated $Υ$ and open charm hadrons in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8$TeV via double parton scattering

Associated production of bottomonia and open charm hadrons in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8$TeV is observed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3$fb^{-1}$ accumulated with the LHCb detector. The observation of five combinations, $Υ(1S)D^0$, $Υ(2S)D^0$, $Υ(1S)D^+$, $Υ(2S)D^+$ and $Υ(1S)D^+_{s}$, is reported. Production cross-sections are measured for $Υ(1S)D^0$ and $Υ(1S)D^+$ pairs in the forward region. The measured cross-sections and the differential distributions indicate the dominance of double parton scattering as the main production mechanism. This allows a precise measurement of the effective cross-section for double parton scattering.

A new algorithm for identifying the flavour of $B_s^0$ mesons at LHCb

A new algorithm for the determination of the initial flavour of $B_s^0$ mesons is presented. The algorithm is based on two neural networks and exploits the $b$ hadron production mechanism at a hadron collider. The first network is trained to select charged kaons produced in association with the $B_s^0$ meson. The second network combines the kaon charges to assign the $B_s^0$ flavour and estimates the probability of a wrong assignment. The algorithm is calibrated using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energies. The calibration is performed in two ways: by resolving the $B_s^0$-$\bar{B}_s^0$ flavour oscillations in $B_s^0 \to D_s^- π^+$ decays, and by analysing flavour-specific $B_{s 2}^{*}(5840)^0 \to B^+ K^-$ decays. The tagging power measured in $B_s^0 \to D_s^- π^+$ decays is found to be $(1.80 \pm 0.19({\rm stat}) \pm 0.18({\rm syst}))$\%, which is an improvement of about 50\% compared to a similar algorithm previously used in the LHCb experiment.

Model-independent measurement of the CKM angle $γ$ using $B^0 \to D K^{\ast 0}$ decays with $D \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ and $K_{S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-}$

A binned Dalitz plot analysis of the decays $B^0 \to D K^{\ast 0}$, with $D \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ and $K_{S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-}$, is performed to measure the observables $x_\pm$ and $y_\pm$, which are related to the CKM angle $γ$ and the hadronic parameters of the decays. The $D$ decay strong phase variation over the Dalitz plot is taken from measurements performed at the CLEO-c experiment, making the analysis independent of the $D$ decay model. With a sample of proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,\rm{fb}^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment, the values of the $CP$ violation parameters are found to be $x_+ = 0.05 \pm 0.35 \pm 0.02$, $x_-=-0.31\pm 0.20 \pm 0.04$, $y_+=-0.81\pm 0.28\pm 0.06$ and $y_-=0.31\pm 0.21 \pm 0.05$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These observables correspond to values $γ$ = $(71 \pm 20)^\circ$, $r_{B^0} = 0.56\pm 0.17$ and $δ_{B^0} = (204\,^{+21}_{-20})^\circ$. The parameters $r_{B^0}$ and $δ_{B^0}$ are the magnitude ratio and strong phase difference between the suppressed and favoured $B^0$ decay amplitudes, and have been measured in a region of $\pm 50$ MeV/$c^2$ around the $K^{\ast}(892)^{0}$ mass and with the magnitude of the cosine of the $K^{\ast}(892)^{0}$ helicity angle larger than 0.4.

Measurement of the $B_{s}^{0} \rightarrow D_{s}^{(*)+}D_{s}^{(*)-}$ branching fractions

The branching fraction of the decay $B_{s}^{0} \rightarrow D_{s}^{(*)+}D_{s}^{(*)-}$ is measured using $pp$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.0fb^{-1}$, collected using the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $7$TeV. It is found to be \begin{align*} {\mathcal{B}}(B_{s}^{0}\rightarrow~D_{s}^{(*)+}D_{s}^{(*)-}) = (3.05 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.20 \pm 0.34)\%, \end{align*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the normalisation channel, respectively. The branching fractions of the individual decays corresponding to the presence of one or two $D^{*\pm}_{s}$ are also measured. The individual branching fractions are found to be \begin{align*} {\mathcal{B}}(B_{s}^{0}\rightarrow~D_{s}^{*\pm}D_{s}^{\mp}) = (1.35 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.15)\%, \newline{\mathcal{B}}(B_{s}^{0}\rightarrow~D_{s}^{*+}D_{s}^{*-}) = (1.27 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.14)\%. \end{align*} All three results are the most precise determinations to date.

First observation and amplitude analysis of the $B^{-}\to D^{+}K^{-}π^{-}$ decay

The $B^{-}\to D^{+}K^{-}π^{-}$ decay is observed in a data sample corresponding to $3.0~\rm{fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. Its branching fraction is measured to be ${\cal B}(B^{-}\to D^{+}K^{-}π^{-}) = (7.31 \pm 0.19 \pm 0.22 \pm 0.39) \times 10^{-5}$ where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the branching fraction of the normalisation channel $B^{-}\to D^{+}π^{-}π^{-}$, respectively. An amplitude analysis of the resonant structure of the $B^{-}\to D^{+}K^{-}π^{-}$ decay is used to measure the contributions from quasi-two-body $B^{-}\to D_{0}^{*}(2400)^{0}K^{-}$, $B^{-}\to D_{2}^{*}(2460)^{0}K^{-}$, and $B^{-}\to D_{J}^{*}(2760)^{0}K^{-}$ decays, as well as from nonresonant sources. First observation of the rare $B^{+}\to D^{+} K^{+} π^{-}$ decay

The $B^{+}\to D^{+} K^{+} π^{-}$ decay is observed in a data sample corresponding to $3.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. The signal significance is $8\,σ$ and the branching fraction is measured to be ${\cal B}\left(B^{+}\to D^{+} K^{+} π^{-}\right) = (5.31 \pm 0.90 \pm 0.48 \pm 0.35)\times 10^{-6}$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the normalisation mode $B^{+}\to D^{-} K^{+} π^{+}$, respectively. The Dalitz plot appears to be dominated by broad structures. Angular distributions are exploited to search for quasi-two-body contributions from $B^{+}\to D^{*}_{2}(2460)^{0}K^{+}$ and $B^{+}\to D^{+} K^{*}(892)^{0}$ decays. No significant signals are observed and upper limits are set on their branching fractions.

First observation of $D^0-\bar D^0$ oscillations in $D^0\to K^+π^-π^+π^-$ decays and measurement of the associated coherence parameters

Charm meson oscillations are observed in a time-dependent analysis of the ratio of $D^0\to K^+π^-π^+π^-$ to $D^0\to K^-π^+π^-π^+$ decay rates, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ recorded by the LHCb experiment. The measurements presented are sensitive to the phase-space averaged ratio of doubly Cabibbo-suppressed to Cabibbo-favoured amplitudes $r_{D}^{K3π}$ and the product of the coherence factor $R_{D}^{K3π}$ and a charm mixing parameter $y^{'}_{K3π}$. The constraints measured are $r_{D}^{K3π}=(5.67 \pm 0.12)\times10^{-2}$, which is the most precise determination to date, and $R_{D}^{K3π} \cdot y^{'}_{K3π} = (0.3 \pm 1.8)\times 10^{-3}$, which provides useful input for determinations of the CP-violating phase $γ$ in $B^\pm \to D K^\pm, D \to K^\mpπ^\pmπ^\mpπ^\pm$ decays. The analysis also gives the most precise measurement of the $D^0\to K^+π^-π^+π^-$ branching fraction, and the first observation of $D^0-\bar D^0$ oscillations in this decay mode, with a significance of 8.2 standard deviations.
