New beyond-Voigt line-shape profile recommended for the HITRAN database

Parameters associated with the collisional perturbation of spectral lines are essential for modeling the absorption of electromagnetic radiation in gas media. The HITRAN molecular spectroscopic database provides these parameters, although originally they were associated only with the Voigt profile parameterization. However, in the HITRAN2016 and HITRAN2020 editions, Voigt, speed-dependent Voigt and Hartmann-Tran (HT) profiles have been incorporated, thanks to the new relational structure of the database. The HT profile was introduced in HITRAN in 2016 as a recommended profile for the most accurate spectral interpretations and modeling. It was parameterized with a four-temperature-range temperature dependence. Since then, however, some features of the HT profile have been revealed that are problematic from a practical perspective. These are: the singular behavior of the temperature dependencies of the velocity-changing parameters when the shift parameter crosses zero and the difficulty in evaluating the former for mixtures. In this article, we summarize efforts to eliminate the above-mentioned problems that led us to recommend using the quadratic speed-dependent hard-collision (qSDHC) profile with double-power-law (DPL) temperature dependencies. We refer to this profile as a modified Hartmann-Tran (mHT) profile. The computational cost of evaluating it is the same as for the HT profile. We give a detailed description of the mHT profile (also including line mixing) and discuss the representation of its parameters, together with their DPL temperature parametrization adopted in the HITRAN database. We discuss an efficient algorithm for evaluating this profile and provide corresponding computer codes in several programming languages: Fortran, Python, MATLAB, Wolfram Mathematica, and LabVIEW. We also discuss the associated update of the HITRAN Application Programming Interface (HAPI).

Chemical evolution models: the role of type Ia supernovae in the $\alpha$-elements over Iron relative abundances and their variations in time and space

The role of type Ia supernovae (SN Ia), mainly the Delay Time Distributions (DTDs) determined by the binary systems, and the yields of elements created by different explosion mechanisms, are studied by using the MulChem chemical evolution model applied to our Galaxy. We explored 15 DTDs and 12 tables of elemental yields produced by different SN Ia explosion mechanisms, doing a total of 180 models. Chemical abundances for $\alpha$-elements (O, Mg, Si, Ca) and Fe derived from these models are compared with recent solar region observational data of $\alpha$-elements over Fe relative abundances, [X/Fe], as a function of [Fe/H] and age. A multidimensional maximum likelihood analysis shows that 52 models are able to fit all these datasets simultaneously, considering the 1$\sigma$ confidence level. The combination of STROLG1 DTD and LN20181 SN Ia yields provides the best fit. The exponential model with very prompt events is a possible DTD, but a combination of several channels is more probable. The SN Ia yields that include MCh or Near MCh correspond to 39 (75%) of the 52 best models. Regarding the DTD, 31 (60%) of the 52 most probable models correspond to the SD scenario, while the remaining 21 (40%) are based on the DD scenario. Our results also show that the relatively large dispersion of the observational data may be explained by the stellar migration from other radial regions, and/or perhaps a combination of DTDs and explosion channels.

Absorption line shape recovery beyond the detection bandwidth limit: application to the precision spectroscopic measurement of the Boltzmann constant

A theoretical model of the influence of detection bandwidth properties on observed line shapes in laser absorption spectroscopy is described. The model predicts artificial frequency shifts, extra broadenings and line asymmetries which must be taken into account in order to obtain accurate central frequencies and other spectroscopic parameters. This reveals sources of systematic effects most probably underestimated so far potentially affecting spectroscopic measurements. This may impact many fields of research, from atmospheric and interstellar physics to precision spectroscopic measurements devoted to metrological applications, tests of quantum electrodynamics or other fundamental laws of nature. Our theoretical model is validated by linear absorption experiments performed on H2O and NH3 molecular lines recorded by precision laser spectroscopy in two distinct spectral regions, near- and mid-infrared. Possible means of recovering original line shape parameters or experimental conditions under which the detection bandwidth has a negligible impact, given a targeted accuracy, are proposed. Particular emphasis is put on the detection bandwidth adjustments required to use such high-quality molecular spectra for a spectroscopic determination of the Boltzmann constant at the 1 ppm level of accuracy.

Observing the intrinsic linewidth of a quantum-cascade laser: beyond the Schawlow-Townes limit

A comprehensive investigation of the frequency-noise spectral density of a free-running mid-infrared quantum-cascade laser is presented for the first time. It provides direct evidence of the leveling of this noise down to a white noise plateau, corresponding to an intrinsic linewidth of a few hundred Hz. The experiment is in agreement with the most recent theory on the fundamental mechanism of line broadening in quantum-cascade lasers, which provides a new insight into the Schawlow-Townes formula and predicts a narrowing beyond the limit set by the radiative lifetime of the upper level.

Primary gas thermometry by means of laser-absorption spectroscopy: Determination of the Boltzmann constant

We report on a new optical implementation of primary gas thermometry based on laser absorption spectrometry in the near infrared. The method consists in retrieving the Doppler broadening from highly accurate observations of the line shape of the R(12) $ν_{1} + 2 ν_{2}^{\phantom{1}0} + ν_{3}$ transition in CO$_{2}$ gas at thermodynamic equilibrium. Doppler width measurements as a function of gas temperature, ranging between the triple point of water and the gallium melting point, allowed for a spectroscopic determination of the Boltzmann constant with a relative accuracy of $\sim1.6\times10^{-4}$.
