Front propagation in geometric and phase field models of stratified media

We study front propagation problems for forced mean curvature flows and their phase field variants that take place in stratified media, i.e., heterogeneous media whose characteristics do not vary in one direction. We consider phase change fronts in infinite cylinders whose axis coincides with the symmetry axis of the medium. Using the recently developed variational approaches, we provide a convergence result relating asymptotic in time front propagation in the diffuse interface case to that in the sharp interface case, for suitably balanced nonlinearities of Allen-Cahn type. The result is established by using arguments in the spirit of $Γ$-convergence, to obtain a correspondence between the minimizers of an exponentially weighted Ginzburg-Landau type functional and the minimizers of an exponentially weighted area type functional. These minimizers yield the fastest traveling waves invading a given stable equilibrium in the respective models and determine the asymptotic propagation speeds for front-like initial data. We further show that generically these fronts are the exponentially stable global attractors for this kind of initial data and give sufficient conditions under which complete phase change occurs via the formation of the considered fronts.

Optimal exercise of swing contracts in energy markets: an integral constrained stochastic optimal control problem

We characterize the value of swing contracts in continuous time as the unique viscosity solution of a Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation with suitable boundary conditions. The case of contracts with penalties is straightforward, and in that case only a terminal condition is needed. Conversely, the case of contracts with strict constraints gives rise to a stochastic control problem with a nonstandard state constraint. We approach this problem by a penalty method: we consider a general constrained problem and approximate the value function with a sequence of value functions of appropriate unconstrained problems with a penalization term in the objective functional. Coming back to the case of swing contracts with strict constraints, we finally characterize the value function as the unique viscosity solution with polynomial growth of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation subject to appropriate boundary conditions.

A symmetry result for the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator

In 1978 E. De Giorgi formulated a conjecture concerning the one-dimensional symmetry of bounded solutions to the elliptic equation Δu=F'(u), which are monotone in some direction. In this paper we prove the analogous statement for the equation Δu - =F'(u), where the Laplacian is replaced by the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator. Our theorem holds without any restriction on the dimension of the ambient space, and this allows us to obtain an similar result in infinite dimensions by a limit procedure.
