Search for $CP$ violation with kinematic asymmetries in the $D^0 \to K^+ K^- π^+ π^-$ decay

We search for $CP$ violation in the singly-Cabibbo-suppressed decay $D^{0}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{-}$ using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $988\text{ }{\rm fb}^{-1}$ collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. We measure a set of five kinematically dependent $CP$ asymmetries, of which four asymmetries are measured for the first time. The set of asymmetry measurements can be sensitive to $CP$ violation via interference between the different partial-wave contributions to the decay and performed on other pseudoscalar decays. We find no evidence of $CP$ violation.

The 2014 TeV Gamma-ray Flare of Mrk 501 Seen with H.E.S.S.: Temporal and Spectral Constraints on Lorentz Invariance Violation

The blazar Mrk 501 (z=0.034) was observed at very-high-energy (VHE, $E\gtrsim 100$~GeV) gamma-ray wavelengths during a bright flare on the night of 2014 June 23-24 (MJD 56832) with the H.E.S.S. phase-II array of Cherenkov telescopes. Data taken that night by H.E.S.S. at large zenith angle reveal an exceptional number of gamma-ray photons at multi-TeV energies, with rapid flux variability and an energy coverage extending significantly up to 20 TeV. This data set is used to constrain Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) using two independent channels: a temporal approach considers the possibility of an energy dependence in the arrival time of gamma rays, whereas a spectral approach considers the possibility of modifications to the interaction of VHE gamma rays with extragalactic background light (EBL) photons. The non-detection of energy-dependent time delays and the non-observation of deviations between the measured spectrum and that of a supposed power-law intrinsic spectrum with standard EBL attenuation are used independently to derive strong constraints on the energy scale of LIV ($E_{\rm{QG}}$) in the subluminal scenario for linear and quadratic perturbations in the dispersion relation of photons. For the case of linear perturbations, the 95% confidence level limits obtained are $E_{\rm{QG},1} > 3.6 \times 10^{17} \ \rm{GeV} $ using the temporal approach and $E_{\rm{QG},1} > 2.6 \times 10^{19} \ \rm{GeV}$ using the spectral approach. For the case of quadratic perturbations, the limits obtained are $E_{\rm{QG},2} > 8.5 \times 10^{10} \ \rm{GeV} $ using the temporal approach and $E_{\rm{QG},2} > 7.8 \times 10^{11} \rm{ GeV}$ using the spectral approach.

Measurement of time-dependent $CP$ violation in $B^0 \to K^0_S π^0 π^0$ decays

We report a measurement of time-dependent $CP$ violation in $B^0 \to K^0_S π^0 π^0$ decays using a data sample of $772 \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment runnin g at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. This decay proceeds mainly via a $b\to sd\bar{d}$ "penguin" amplitude. The results are $\sin 2ϕ^{\rm eff}_1 = 0.92^{+0.27}_{-0.31}~$ (stat.) $\pm 0.11$ (syst.) and $\mathcal{A} = 0.28 \pm 0.21$ (stat.) $\pm 0.04$ (syst.), which are the most precise measurements of $CP$ violati on in this decay mode to date. The value for the $CP$-violating parameter $\sin 2ϕ^{\rm eff}_1$ is consistent with that obtained using decay modes proceeding via a $b\to c\bar{c}s$ "tree" amplitude.

Search for a light CP-odd Higgs boson and low-mass dark matter at the Belle experiment

We report on the first Belle search for a light CP-odd Higgs boson, $A^{0}$, that decays into low mass dark matter, $χ$, in final states with a single photon and missing energy. We search for events produced via the dipion transition $Υ(\textrm{2S})\rightarrowΥ(\textrm{1S})π^{+}π^{-}$, followed by the on-shell process $Υ(\textrm{1S})\rightarrowγA^{0}$ with $A^{0} \rightarrowχχ$, or by the off-shell process $Υ(\textrm{1S})\rightarrowγχχ$. Utilizing a data sample of 157.3 $\times$ 10$^{6}$ $Υ(\textrm{2S})$ decays, we find no evidence for a signal. We set limits on the branching fractions of such processes in the mass ranges $M_{A^{0}} <$ 8.97 $\textrm{GeV/}\textit{c}^{2}$ and $M_χ <$ 4.44 $\textrm{GeV/}\textit{c}^{2}$. We then use the limits on the off-shell process to set competitive limits on WIMP-nucleon scattering in the WIMP mass range below 5 $\textrm{GeV/}\textit{c}^{2}$.

Search for the rare decay of $B^+ \to \ell^{\,+} ν_{\ell} γ$ with improved hadronic tagging

We present the result of the search for the rare $B$ meson decay of $B^+ \to \ell^{\,+} ν_{\ell} γ$ with $\ell =e,μ$. For the search the full data set recorded by the Belle experiment of $711 \, \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ integrated luminosity near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance is used. Signal candidates are reconstructed for photon energies $E_γ$ larger than $1 \, \mathrm{GeV}$ using a novel multivariate tagging algorithm. The novel algorithm fully reconstructs the second $B$ meson produced in the collision using hadronic modes and was specifically trained to recognize the signal signature in combination with hadronic tag-side $B$ meson decays. This approach greatly enhances the performance. Background processes that can mimic this signature, mainly charmless semileptonic decays and continuum processes, are suppressed using multivariate methods. The number of signal candidates is determined by analyzing the missing mass squared distribution as inferred from the signal side particles and the kinematic properties of the tag-side $B$ meson. No significant excess over the background-only hypothesis is observed and upper limits on the partial branching fraction $ Δ\mathcal{B} $ with $E_γ> 1 \, \mathrm{GeV}$ individually for electron and muon final states as well as for the average branching fraction of both lepton final states are reported. We find a Bayesian upper limit of $Δ\mathcal{B}( B^{+} \to \ell^{\, +} ν_{\ell} γ) < 3.0 \times 10^{-6}$ at 90% CL and also report an upper limit on the first inverse moment of the light-cone distribution amplitude of the $B$ meson of $λ_B$ at 90% CL.

Measurements of branching fraction and direct $C\!P$ asymmetry in $B^{\pm}\to K^{0}_{S}K^{0}_{S}K^{\pm}$ and a search for $B^{\pm}\to K^{0}_{S}K^{0}_{S}π^{\pm}$

We study charmless hadronic decays of charged $B$ mesons to the final states $K^{0}_{S}K^{0}_{S}K^{\pm}$ and $K^{0}_{S}K^{0}_{S}π^{\pm}$ using a $711 fb^{-1}$ data sample that contains $772\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs, and was collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. For $B^{\pm}\to K^{0}_{S}K^{0}_{S}K^{\pm}$, the measured branching fraction and direct $CP$ asymmetry are $[10.42\pm0.43(stat)\pm 0.22(syst)]\times10^{-6}$ and [$+1.6\pm3.9(stat)\pm 0.9(syst)$]%, respectively. In the absence of a statistically significant signal for $B^{\pm}\to K^{0}_{S}K^{0}_{S}π^{\pm}$, we obtain a 90% confidence-level upper limit on its branching fraction as $8.7 \times10^{-7}$.

Measurement of the branching fraction and time-dependent $CP$ asymmetry for $B^0\to J/ψπ^0$ decays

We measure the branching fraction and time-dependent $CP$-violating asymmetry for $B^0\to J/ψπ^0$ decays using a data sample of 711 ${\rm fb^{-1}}$ collected on the $Υ(4S)$ resonance by the Belle experiment running at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. The branching fraction is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(B^0\to J/ψπ^0) = [1.62\,\pm 0.11~({\rm stat}) \pm0.07~({\rm syst})]\times 10^{-5}$, which is the most precise measurement to date. The measured $CP$ asymmetry parameters are $\mathcal{S} = -0.59\,\pm 0.19~({\rm stat}) \pm 0.03~({\rm syst})$ and $\mathcal{A} = -0.15\,\pm 0.14~({\rm stat})\,^{+0.04}_{-0.03}~({\rm syst})$. The mixing-induced $CP$ asymmetry ($\mathcal{S}$) differs from the case of no $CP$ violation by 3.0 standard deviations, and the direct $CP$ asymmetry ($\mathcal{A}$) is consistent with zero.

We report the study of \OK \ and \SK \ using a $772 \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pair data sample recorded on the $Υ({\rm 4S})$ resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB. The following branching fractions are measured: $\mathcal{B}$(\OKPHSP) $=$ $(4.22^{+0.45}_{-0.44}\pm 0.51)\times10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}$(\SKPHSP) $=$ $(3.81^{+0.39}_{-0.37} \pm 0.45)\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}$(\ETACD+c.c.) $=$ $(2.91^{+0.37}_{-0.35}\pm 0.36)\times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}$(\PLPHI) $=$ $(8.18 \pm 2.15 \pm 0.79)\times10^{-7}$, where c.c. denotes the corresponding charge-conjugation process. The intermediate resonance decays are excluded in the four-body decay measurements. We also found evidences for $\mathcal{B}$(\ETACS+c.c.) $=$ $(3.59 \pm 1.52 \pm 0.47) \times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}$(\LLKO) $=$ $(2.30 \pm 0.65 \pm 0.25) \times 10^{-6}$. No significant signals are found for \JPSIS+c.c. and \LLKS \ ; we set the 90\% confidence level upper limits on their decay branching fractions as $< 1.85\times10^{-3}$ and $< 2.14\times10^{-6}$, respectively.

Observation of $e^+e^- \to γχ_{c1}$ and search for $e^+e^- \to γχ_{c0}, γχ_{c2},$ and $γη_c$ at $\sqrt{s}$ near 10.6 GeV at Belle

Using data samples of 89.5~fb$^{-1}$, 711.0~fb$^{-1}$, and 121.4~fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider at center-of-mass energies 10.52 GeV, 10.58 GeV, and 10.867 GeV, respectively, we study the exclusive reactions $e^+e^-\toγχ_{cJ}$ ($J = 0,~1,~2$) and $e^+e^-\toγη_c$. A significant $γχ_{c1}$ signal is observed for the first time at $\sqrt{s}=10.58$ GeV with a significance of $5.1σ$ including systematic uncertainties. No significant excesses for $γχ_{c0}$, $γχ_{c2}$, and $γη_c$ final states are found, and we set 90\% credibility level upper limits on the Born cross sections ($σ_{\rm B}$) at 10.52 GeV, 10.58 GeV, and 10.867~GeV. Particle Transport within the Pulsar Wind Nebula HESS J1825-137

Aims: We present a detailed view of the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) HESS J1825-137. We aim to constrain the mechanisms dominating the particle transport within the nebula, accounting for its anomalously large size and spectral characteristics. Methods: The nebula is studied using a deep exposure from over 12 years of H.E.S.S. I operation, together with data from H.E.S.S. II improving the low energy sensitivity. Enhanced energy-dependent morphological and spatially-resolved spectral analyses probe the Very High Energy (VHE, E > 0.1 TeV) gamma-ray properties of the nebula. Results: The nebula emission is revealed to extend out to 1.5 degrees from the pulsar, ~1.5 times further than previously seen, making HESS J1825--137, with an intrinsic diameter of ~100 pc, potentially the largest gamma-ray PWN currently known. Characterisation of the nebula's strongly energy-dependent morphology enables the particle transport mechanisms to be constrained. A dependence of the nebula extent with energy of R $\propto$ E^αwith α= -0.29 +/- 0.04 (stat) +/- 0.05 (sys) disfavours a pure diffusion scenario for particle transport within the nebula. The total gamma-ray flux of the nebula above 1~TeV is found to be (1.12 +/- 0.03 (stat) +/- 0.25 (sys)) $\times 10^{-11}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, corresponding to ~64% of the flux of the Crab Nebula. Conclusions: HESS J1825-137 is a PWN with clear energy-dependent morphology at VHE gamma-ray energies. This source is used as a laboratory to investigate particle transport within middle-aged PWNe. Deep observations of this highly spatially-extended PWN enable a spectral map of the region to be produced, providing insights into the spectral variation within the nebula.

AGILE detection of gamma-ray sources coincident with cosmic neutrino events

The origin of cosmic neutrinos is still largely unknown. Using data obtained by the gamma-ray imager on board of the AGILE satellite, we systematically searched for transient gamma-ray sources above 100 MeV that are temporally and spatially coincident with ten recent high-energy neutrino IceCube events. We find three AGILE candidate sources that can be considered possible counterparts to neutrino events. Detecting 3 gamma-ray/neutrino associations out of 10 IceCube events is shown to be unlikely due to a chance coincidence. One of the sources is related to the BL Lac source TXS 0506+056. For the other two AGILE gamma-ray sources there are no obvious known counterparts, and both Galactic and extragalactic origin should be considered.

Evidence of a structure in $\bar{K}^{0} Λ_{c}^{+}$ consistent with a charged $Ξ_c(2930)^{+}$, and updated measurement of $\bar{B}^{0} \to \bar{K}^{0} Λ_{c}^{+} \barΛ_{c}^{-}$ at Belle

We report evidence for the charged charmed-strange baryon $Ξ_{c}(2930)^+$ with a signal significance of 3.9$σ$ with systematic errors included. The charged $Ξ_{c}(2930)^+$ is found in its decay to $K_{S}^{0} Λ_{c}^+$ in the substructure of $\bar{B}^{0} \to K^{0}_{S} Λ_{c}^{+} \barΛ_{c}^{-}$ decays. The measured mass and width are $[2942.3 \pm 4.4 (\rm stat.) \pm 1.5(\rm syst.)]$~MeV/$c^{2}$ and $[14.8 \pm 8.8(\rm stat.) \pm 2.5(\rm syst.)]$~MeV, respectively, and the product branching fraction is $\cal{B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Ξ_c(2930)^{+} \barΛ_{c}^{-}) \cal{B}(Ξ_c(2930)^{+}\to \bar{K}^{0} Λ_{c}^{+})=[2.37 \pm 0.51 (\rm stat.)\pm 0.31(\rm syst.)]\times 10^{-4}$. We also measure $\cal{B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to \bar{K}^{0} Λ_{c}^{+} \barΛ_{c}^{-}) = [3.99 \pm 0.76(\rm stat.) \pm 0.51(\rm syst.)] \times 10^{-4}$ with greater precision than previous experiments, and present the results of a search for the charmonium-like state $Y(4660)$ and its spin partner, $Y_η$, in the $Λ_{c}^{+}\barΛ_{c}^{-}$ invariant mass spectrum. No clear signals of the $Y(4660)$ or $Y_η$ are observed and the 90\% credibility level (C.L.) upper limits on their production rates are determined. These measurements are obtained from a sample of $(772\pm11)\times 10^{6} B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider.

Measurement of eta_c(1S), eta_c(2S) and non-resonant eta' pi+ pi- production via two-photon collisions

We report the measurement of gamma gamma to eta_c(1S), eta_c(2S) to eta' pi+ pi- with eta' decays to gamma rho and eta pi+ pi- using 941 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The eta_c(1S) mass and width are measured to be M = [2984.6\pm0.7 (stat.)\pm2.2 (syst.)] MeV/c^{2} and Γ= [30.8^{+2.3}_{-2.2}~(stat.) \pm 2.5~(syst.)] MeV, respectively. First observation of eta_c(2S) to eta' pi+ pi- with a significance of 5.5sigma including systematic error is obtained, and the eta_c(2S) mass is measured to be M = [3635.1\pm3.7~(stat.)\pm2.9~(syst.)] MeV/c^{2}. The products of the two-photon decay width and branching fraction (B) of decays to eta'pi+ pi- are determined to be Γ_{gamma gamma}B = [65.4\pm2.6~(stat.)\pm6.9~(syst.)] eV for eta_c(1S) and [5.6^{+1.2}_{-1.1}~(stat.)\pm1.1~(syst.)] eV for eta_c(2S). A new decay mode for the eta_c(1S) to eta'f_0(2080) with f_0(2080) to pi+ pi- is observed with a statistical significance of 20sigma. The f_0(2080) mass and width are determined to be M = [2083^{+63}_{-66}~(stat.)\pm 32~(syst.)] MeV/c^{2} and Γ= [178^{+60}_{-178}~(stat.) \pm 55~(syst.)] MeV. The cross sections for gamma gamma to eta' pi+ pi- and eta'f_{2}(1270) are measured for the first time.

Observation of $Ξ(1620)^0$ and evidence for $Ξ(1690)^0$ in $Ξ_c^+ \rightarrow Ξ^-π^+π^+$ decays

We report the first observation of the doubly-strange baryon $Ξ(1620)^0$ in its decay to $Ξ^-π^+$ via $Ξ_c^+ \rightarrow Ξ^- π^+ π^+$ decays based on a $980\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The mass and width are measured to be 1610.4 $\pm$ 6.0 (stat) $^{+5.9}_{-3.5}$ (syst)~MeV$/c^2$ and 59.9 $\pm$ 4.8 (stat) $^{+2.8}_{-3.0}$ (syst)~MeV, respectively. We obtain 4.0$σ$ evidence of the $Ξ(1690)^0$ with the same data sample. These results shed light on the structure of hyperon resonances with strangeness $S=-2$.

VHE $γ$-ray discovery and multi-wavelength study of the blazar 1ES 2322-409

A hotspot at a position compatible with the BL Lac object 1ES 2322-409 was serendipitously detected with H.E.S.S. during observations performed in 2004 and 2006 on the blazar PKS 2316-423. Additional data on 1ES 2322-409 were taken in 2011 and 2012, leading to a total live-time of 22.3h. Point-like very-high-energy (VHE; E>100GeV) $γ$-ray emission is detected from a source centred on the 1ES 2322-409 position, with an excess of 116.7 events at a significance of 6.0$σ$. The average VHE $γ$-ray spectrum is well described with a power law with a photon index $Γ=3.40\pm0.66_{\text{stat}}\pm0.20_{\text{sys}}$ and an integral flux $Φ(E>200GeV) = (3.11\pm0.71_{\rm stat}\pm0.62_{\rm sys})\times10^{-12} cm^{-2} s^{-1}$, which corresponds to 1.1$\%$ of the Crab nebula flux above 200 GeV. Multi-wavelength data obtained with Fermi LAT, Swift XRT and UVOT, RXTE PCA, ATOM, and additional data from WISE, GROND and Catalina, are also used to characterise the broad-band non-thermal emission of 1ES 2322-409. The multi-wavelength behaviour indicates day-scale variability. Swift UVOT and XRT data show strong variability at longer scales. A spectral energy distribution (SED) is built from contemporaneous observations obtained around a high state identified in Swift data. A modelling of the SED is performed with a stationary homogeneous one-zone synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) leptonic model. The redshift of the source being unknown, two plausible values were tested for the modelling. A systematic scan of the model parameters space is performed, resulting in a well-constrained combination of values providing a good description of the broad-band behaviour of 1ES 2322-409.

Search for the lepton-flavor-violating decay $B^{0}\to K^{\ast 0} μ^{\pm} e^{\mp}$
