Deeper H.E.S.S. observations of Vela Junior (RX J0852.0$-$4622): Morphology studies and resolved spectroscopy

Aims. We study gamma-ray emission from the shell-type supernova remnant (SNR) RX J0852.0$-$4622 to better characterize its spectral properties and its distribution over the SNR. Methods. The analysis of an extended High Energy Spectroscopic System (H.E.S.S.) data set at very high energies (E > 100 GeV) permits detailed studies, as well as spatially resolved spectroscopy, of the morphology and spectrum of the whole RX J0852.0$-$4622 region. The H.E.S.S. data are combined with archival data from other wavebands and interpreted in the framework of leptonic and hadronic models. The joint Fermi-LAT-H.E.S.S. spectrum allows the direct determination of the spectral characteristics of the parent particle population in leptonic and hadronic scenarios using only GeV-TeV data. Results. An updated analysis of the H.E.S.S. data shows that the spectrum of the entire SNR connects smoothly to the high-energy spectrum measured by Fermi-LAT. The increased data set makes it possible to demonstrate that the H.E.S.S. spectrum deviates significantly from a power law and is well described by both a curved power law and a power law with an exponential cutoff at an energy of $E_\mathrm{cut} = (6.7 \pm 1.2_\mathrm{stat} \pm 1.2_\mathrm{syst})$ TeV. The joint Fermi-LAT-H.E.S.S. spectrum allows the unambiguous identification of the spectral shape as a power law with an exponential cutoff. No significant evidence is found for a variation of the spectral parameters across the SNR, suggesting similar conditions of particle acceleration across the remnant. A simple modeling using one particle population to model the SNR emission demonstrates that both leptonic and hadronic emission scenarios remain plausible. It is also shown that at least a part of the shell emission is likely due to the presence of a pulsar wind nebula around PSR J0855$-$4644.

Measurement of $\cos{2β}$ in $B^{0} \to D^{(*)} h^{0}$ with $D \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ decays by a combined time-dependent Dalitz plot analysis of BaBar and Belle data

We report measurements of $\sin{2β}$ and $\cos{2β}$ from a time-dependent Dalitz plot analysis of $B^{0} \to D^{(*)} h^{0}$ with $D \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ decays, where the light unflavored and neutral hadron $h^{0}$ is a $π^{0}$, $η$, or $ω$ meson. The analysis is performed with a combination of the final data sets of the \babar\ and Belle experiments containing $471 \times 10^{6}$ and $772 \times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ\left(4S\right)$ resonance at the asymmetric-energy B factories PEP-II at SLAC and KEKB at KEK, respectively. We measure $\sin{2β} = 0.80 \pm 0.14 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 0.06 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.03 \,(\rm{model})$ and $\cos{2β} = 0.91 \pm 0.22 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 0.09 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.07 \,(\rm{model})$. The result for the direct measurement of the angle is $β= \left( 22.5 \pm 4.4 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 1.2 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.6 \,(\rm{model}) \right)^{\circ}$. The last quoted uncertainties are due to the composition of the $D^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ decay amplitude model, which is newly established by a Dalitz plot amplitude analysis of a high-statistics $e^{+}e^{-} \to c\bar{c}$ data sample as part of this analysis. We find the first evidence for $\cos2β>0$ at the level of $3.7$ standard deviations. The measurement excludes the trigonometric multifold solution $π/2 - β= (68.1 \pm 0.7)^{\circ}$ at the level of $7.3$ standard deviations and therefore resolves an ambiguity in the determination of the apex of the CKM Unitarity Triangle. The hypothesis of $β= 0^{\circ}$ is ruled out at the level of $5.1$ standard deviations, and thus CP violation is observed in $B^{0} \to D^{(*)} h^{0}$ decays.

First evidence for $\cos 2β>0$ and resolution of the CKM Unitarity Triangle ambiguity by a time-dependent Dalitz plot analysis of $B^{0} \to D^{(*)} h^{0}$ with $D \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ decays

We present first evidence that the cosine of the CP-violating weak phase $2β$ is positive, and hence exclude trigonometric multifold solutions of the CKM Unitarity Triangle using a time-dependent Dalitz plot analysis of $B^{0} \to D^{(*)} h^{0}$ with $D \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ decays, where $h^{0} \in \{π^{0}, η, ω\}$ denotes a light unflavored and neutral hadron. The measurement is performed combining the final data sets of the BaBar and Belle experiments collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance at the asymmetric-energy B factories PEP-II at SLAC and KEKB at KEK, respectively. The data samples contain $( 471 \pm 3 )\times 10^6\, B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded by the BaBar detector and $( 772 \pm 11 )\times 10^6\, B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded by the Belle detector. The results of the measurement are $\sin{2β} = 0.80 \pm 0.14 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 0.06 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.03 \,(\rm{model})$ and $\cos{2β} = 0.91 \pm 0.22 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 0.09 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.07 \,(\rm{model})$. The result for the direct measurement of the angle $β$ of the CKM Unitarity Triangle is $β= \left( 22.5 \pm 4.4 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 1.2 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.6 \,(\rm{model}) \right)^{\circ}$. The quoted model uncertainties are due to the composition of the $D^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ decay amplitude model, which is newly established by performing a Dalitz plot amplitude analysis using a high-statistics $e^{+}e^{-} \to c\bar{c}$ data sample. CP violation is observed in $B^{0} \to D^{(*)} h^{0}$ decays at the level of $5.1$ standard deviations. The significance for $\cos{2β}>0$ is $3.7$ standard deviations. The trigonometric multifold solution $π/2 - β= (68.1 \pm 0.7)^{\circ}$ is excluded at the level of $7.3$ standard deviations. The measurement resolves an ambiguity in the determination of the apex of the CKM Unitarity Triangle.

Observation of $Υ(4S)\to η' Υ(1S)$

We report the first observation of the hadronic transition $Υ(4S)\toη'Υ(1S)$, using 496 fb$^{-1}$ data collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. We reconstruct the $η'$ meson through its decays to $ρ^0γ$ and to $π^+π^-η$, with $η\toγγ$. We measure: ${\cal B}(Υ(4S)\toη'Υ(1S))=(3.43\pm 0.88 {\rm(stat.)} \pm 0.21 {\rm(syst.)})\times10^{-5}$, with a significance of 5.7$σ$.

Status of the warm front end of PIP-II injector test

The Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) at Fermilab is a program of upgrades to the injection complex. At its core is the design and construction of a CW compatible, pulsed H- SRF linac. To validate the concept of the front-end of such machine, a test accelerator known as PIP-II Injector Test (PIP2IT) is under construction. It includes a 10 mA DC, 30 keV H- ion source, a 2 m-long Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT), a 2.1 MeV CWRFQ, followed by a Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT) that feeds the first of 2 cryomodules increasing the beam energy to about 25 MeV, and a High Energy Beam Transport section (HEBT) that takes the beam to a dump. The ion source, LEBT, RFQ, and initial version of the MEBT have been built, installed, and commissioned. This report presents the overall status of the warm front end.

Production cross sections of hyperons and charmed baryons from $e^+e^-$ annihilation near $\sqrt{s} = 10.52$~GeV

We measure the inclusive production cross sections of hyperons and charmed baryons from $e^+e^-$ annihilation using a 800 fb$^{-1}$ data sample taken near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The feed-down contributions from heavy particles are subtracted using our data, and the direct production cross sections are presented for the first time. The production cross sections divided by the number of spin states for $S=-1$ hyperons follow an exponential function with a single slope parameter except for the $Σ(1385)^+$ resonance. Suppression for $Σ(1385)^+$ and $Ξ(1530)^0$ hyperons is observed. Among the production cross sections of charmed baryons, a factor of three difference for $Λ_c^+$ states over $Σ_c$ states is observed. This observation suggests a diquark structure for these baryons.

Inclusive study of bottomonium production in association with an $η$ meson in $e^+e^-$ annihilations near $Υ(5S)$

We study bottomonium production in association with an $η$ meson in $e^+e^-$ annihilations near the $Υ(5S)$, at a center of mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=10.866\,$GeV. The results are based on the $121.4\,$fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected by the Belle experiment at the asymmetric energy KEKB collider. Only the $η$ meson is reconstructed and the missing-mass spectrum of $η$ candidates is investigated. We observe the $e^+e^-\toηΥ_J(1D)$ process and find evidence for the $e^+e^-\toηΥ(2S)$ process, while no significant signals of $Υ(1S)$, $h_b(1P)$, nor $h_b(2P)$ are found. Cross sections for the studied processes are reported.

Search for $CP$ violation in the $D^{+}\toπ^{+}π^{0}$ decay at Belle

We search for $CP$ violation in the charged charm meson decay $D^{+}\toπ^{+}π^{0}$, based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $\rm 921~fb^{-1}$ collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB $e^{+}e^{-}$ asymmetric-energy collider. The measured $CP$ violating asymmetry is $[+2.31\pm1.24({\rm stat})\pm0.23({\rm syst})]\%$, which is consistent with the standard model prediction and has a significantly improved precision compared to previous results.

H.E.S.S. discovery of very high energy gamma-ray emission from PKS 0625-354

PKS 0625-354 (z=0.055) was observed with the four H.E.S.S. telescopes in 2012 during 5.5 hours. The source was detected above an energy threshold of 200 GeV at a significance level of 6.1$σ$. No significant variability is found in these observations. The source is well described with a power-law spectrum with photon index $Γ =2.84 \pm 0.50_{stat} \pm 0.10_{syst}$ and normalization (at $E_0$=1.0 TeV) $N_0(E_0)=(0.58 \pm 0.22_{stat} \pm 0.12_{syst})\times10^{-12}$ TeV$^{-1}$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. Multi-wavelength data collected with Fermi-LAT, Swift-XRT, Swift-UVOT, ATOM and WISE are also analysed. Significant variability is observed only in the Fermi-LAT $γ$-ray and Swift-XRT X-ray energy bands. Having a good multi-wavelength coverage from radio to very high energy, we performed a broadband modelling from two types of emission scenarios. The results from a one zone lepto-hadronic, and a multi-zone leptonic models are compared and discussed. On the grounds of energetics, our analysis favours a leptonic multi-zone model. Models associated to the X-ray variability constraint supports previous results suggesting a BL Lac nature of PKS 0625-354, with, however, a large-scale jet structure typical of a radio galaxy.

Population study of Galactic supernova remnants at very high $γ$-ray energies with H.E.S.S.

Shell-type supernova remnants (SNRs) are considered prime candidates for the acceleration of Galactic cosmic rays (CRs) up to the knee of the CR spectrum at $\mathrm{E} \approx \mathrm{3}\times \mathrm{10}^\mathrm{15}$ eV. Our Milky Way galaxy hosts more than 350 SNRs discovered at radio wavelengths and at high energies, of which 220 fall into the H.E.S.S. Galactic Plane Survey (HGPS) region. Of those, only 50 SNRs are coincident with a H.E.S.S source and in 8 cases the very high-energy (VHE) emission is firmly identified as an SNR. The H.E.S.S. GPS provides us with a legacy for SNR population study in VHE $γ$-rays and we use this rich data set to extract VHE flux upper limits from all undetected SNRs. Overall, the derived flux upper limits are not in contradiction with the canonical CR paradigm. Assuming this paradigm holds true, we can constrain typical ambient density values around shell-type SNRs to $n\leq 7~\textrm{cm}^\textrm{-3}$ and electron-to-proton energy fractions above 10~TeV to $ε_\textrm{ep} \leq 5\times 10^{-3}$. Furthermore, comparisons of VHE with radio luminosities in non-interacting SNRs reveal a behaviour that is in agreement with the theory of magnetic field amplification at shell-type SNRs.

Science with the Cherenkov Telescope Array

The Cherenkov Telescope Array, CTA, will be the major global observatory for very high energy gamma-ray astronomy over the next decade and beyond. The scientific potential of CTA is extremely broad: from understanding the role of relativistic cosmic particles to the search for dark matter. CTA is an explorer of the extreme universe, probing environments from the immediate neighbourhood of black holes to cosmic voids on the largest scales. Covering a huge range in photon energy from 20 GeV to 300 TeV, CTA will improve on all aspects of performance with respect to current instruments. The observatory will operate arrays on sites in both hemispheres to provide full sky coverage and will hence maximize the potential for the rarest phenomena such as very nearby supernovae, gamma-ray bursts or gravitational wave transients. With 99 telescopes on the southern site and 19 telescopes on the northern site, flexible operation will be possible, with sub-arrays available for specific tasks. CTA will have important synergies with many of the new generation of major astronomical and astroparticle observatories. Multi-wavelength and multi-messenger approaches combining CTA data with those from other instruments will lead to a deeper understanding of the broad-band non-thermal properties of target sources. The CTA Observatory will be operated as an open, proposal-driven observatory, with all data available on a public archive after a pre-defined proprietary period. Scientists from institutions worldwide have combined together to form the CTA Consortium. This Consortium has prepared a proposal for a Core Programme of highly motivated observations. The programme, encompassing approximately 40% of the available observing time over the first ten years of CTA operation, is made up of individual Key Science Projects (KSPs), which are presented in this document.

Detection of variable VHE gamma-ray emission from the extra-galactic gamma-ray binary LMC P3

Context. Recently, the high-energy (HE, 0.1-100 GeV) $γ$-ray emission from the object LMC P3 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has been discovered to be modulated with a 10.3-day period, making it the first extra-galactic $γ$-ray binary. Aims. This work aims at the detection of very-high-energy (VHE, >100 GeV) $γ$-ray emission and the search for modulation of the VHE signal with the orbital period of the binary system. Methods. LMC P3 has been observed with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.); the acceptance-corrected exposure time is 100 h. The data set has been folded with the known orbital period of the system in order to test for variability of the emission. Energy spectra are obtained for the orbit-averaged data set, and for the orbital phase bin around the VHE maximum. Results. VHE $γ$-ray emission is detected with a statistical significance of 6.4 $σ$. The data clearly show variability which is phase-locked to the orbital period of the system. Periodicity cannot be deduced from the H.E.S.S. data set alone. The orbit-averaged luminosity in the $1-10$ TeV energy range is $(1.4 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{35}$ erg/s. A luminosity of $(5 \pm 1) \times 10^{35}$ erg/s is reached during 20% of the orbit. HE and VHE $γ$-ray emissions are anti-correlated. LMC P3 is the most luminous $γ$-ray binary known so far.

Measurement of Branching Fractions of Hadronic Decays of the $Ω_c^0$ Baryon

Using a data sample of 980 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data taken with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider, we report the results of a study of the decays of the $Ω_c^0$ charmed baryon into hadronic final states. We report the most precise measurements to date of the relative branching fractions of the $Ω_c^0$ into $Ω^-π^+π^0$, $Ω^-π^+π^-π^+$, $Ξ^-K^-π^+π^+$, and $Ξ^0K^-π^+$, as well as the first measurements of the branching fractions of the $Ω_c^0$ into $Ξ^-\bar{K}^0π^+$, $Ξ^0\bar{K}^0$, and $Λ\bar{K}^0\bar{K}^0$, all with respect to the $Ω^-π^+$ decay. In addition, we investigate the resonant substructure of these modes. Finally, we present a limit on the branching fraction for the decay $Ω_c^0\toΣ^+K^-K^-π^+$.

Measurement of the $τ$ lepton polarization and $R(D^*)$ in the decay $\bar{B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- \barν_τ$ with one-prong hadronic $τ$ decays at Belle

With the full data sample of $772 \times 10^6$ $B{\bar B}$ pairs recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider, the decay $\bar{B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- \barν_τ$ is studied with the hadronic $τ$ decays $τ^- \rightarrow π^- ν_τ$ and $τ^- \rightarrow ρ^- ν_τ$. The $τ$ polarization $P_τ(D^*)$ in two-body hadronic $τ$ decays is measured, as well as the ratio of the branching fractions $R(D^{*}) = \mathcal{B}(\bar {B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- \barν_τ) / \mathcal{B}(\bar{B} \rightarrow D^* \ell^- \barν_\ell)$, where $\ell^-$ denotes an electron or a muon. Our results, $P_τ(D^*) = -0.38 \pm 0.51 {\rm (stat)} ^{+0.21}_{-0.16} {\rm (syst)}$ and $R(D^*) = 0.270 \pm 0.035{\rm (stat)} ^{+0.028}_{-0.025}{\rm (syst)}$, are consistent with the theoretical predictions of the Standard Model. The polarization values of $P_τ(D^*) > +0.5$ are excluded at the 90\% confidence level.

Measurement of the branching fraction and $CP$ asymmetry in $B^{0} \to π^{0}π^{0}$ decays, and an improved constraint on $ϕ_{2}$

We measure the branching fraction and $CP$ violation asymmetry in the decay $B^{0}\to π^{0}π^{0}$, using a data sample of $752\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. The obtained branching fraction and direct $CP$ asymmetry are $ \mathcal{B}(B\to π^{0}π^{0}) = [1.31 \pm 0.19~ \text{(stat.)} \pm 0.19~ \text{(syst.)}] \times 10^{-6}$ and $ A_{CP} = +0.14 \pm 0.36~ \text{(stat.)} \pm 0.10~ \text{(syst.)}, $ respectively. The signal significance, including the systematic uncertainty, is 6.4 standard deviations. We combine these results with Belle's earlier measurements of $B^{0}\to π^{+} π^{-}$ and $B^{\pm} \to π^{\pm} π^{0}$ to exclude the $CP$-violating parameter $ϕ_{2}$ from the range $15.5^{\circ} < ϕ_{2} < 75.0^{\circ}$ at 95\% confidence level.

Search for $B^{-}\toμ^{-}\barν_μ$ Decays at the Belle Experiment

We report the result of a search for the decay $B^{-}\toμ^{-}\barν_μ$. The signal events are selected based on the presence of a high momentum muon and the topology of the rest of the event showing properties of a generic $B$-meson decay, as well as the missing energy and momentum being consistent with the hypothesis of a neutrino from the signal decay. We find a 2.4 standard deviation excess above background including systematic uncertainties, which corresponds to a branching fraction of ${\cal B}(B^{-}\toμ^{-}\barν_μ) =(6.46 \pm 2.22 \pm 1.60 )\times10^{-7}$ or a frequentist 90% confidence level interval on the $B^{-}\toμ^{-}\barν_μ$ branching fraction of $[2.9, 10.7]\times 10^{-7}$. This result is obtained from a $711\ \text{fb}^{-1}$ data sample that contains $772 \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs, collected near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider.

Measurement of branching fraction and direct $CP$ asymmetry in charmless $B^+ \to K^+K^- π^+$ decays at Belle

We report a study of the charmless hadronic decay of the charged $B$ meson to the three-body final state $K^+ K^- π^+$. The results are based on a data sample that contains $772\times10^6$ $B \bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The measured inclusive branching fraction and the direct $CP$ asymmetry are $(5.38\pm0.40\pm0.35)\times 10^{-6}$ and $-0.170\pm0.073\pm0.017$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The $K^{+}K^{-}$ invariant mass distribution of the signal candidates shows an excess in the region below $1.5$ GeV/$c^2$, which is consistent with the previous studies from BaBar and LHCb. In addition, strong evidence of a large direct $CP$ asymmetry is found in the $K^{+}K^{-}$ low-invariant-mass region.
