First Observation of Doubly Cabibbo-Suppressed Decay of a Charmed Baryon: $Λ^{+}_{c} \rightarrow p K^{+} π^{-}$

We report the first observation of the decay $Λ^{+}_{c} \rightarrow p K^{+} π^{-}$ using a 980 $\mathrm{fb^{-1}}$ data sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. This is the first doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay of a charmed baryon to be observed. We measure the branching ratio of this decay with respect to its Cabibbo-favored counterpart to be $\mathcal{B}(Λ^{+}_{c} \rightarrow p K^{+} π^{-})/\mathcal{B}(Λ^{+}_{c} \rightarrow p K^{-} π^{+})=(2.35\pm0.27\pm0.21)\times10^{-3}$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

First Observation of the Decay B0->psi(2S)pi0

We report a measurement of the $B^0\rightarrowψ(2S)π^0$ branching fraction based on the full $Υ(4S)$ data set of $772\times10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We obtain $B(B^0\rightarrowψ(2S)π^0) = (1.17\pm0.17\text{(stat)}\pm0.08\text{(syst)})\times10^{-5}$. The result has a significance of 7.2 standard deviations and is the first observation of the decay $B^0\rightarrowψ(2S)π^0$.

Search for the rare decay $D^0\toγγ$ at Belle

We search for the rare radiative decay $D^0\toγγ$ using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of $832{\rm fb^{-1}}$ recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ asymmetric-energy collider. We find no statistically significant signal and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of ${\cal B}(D^0\toγγ)<8.5\times10^{-7}$ at $90\%$ confidence level. This is the most restrictive limit on the decay channel to date.

Microcanonical distribution for one-electron triatomic molecules

We formulate a microcanonical distribution for an arbitrary one-electron triatomic molecule. This distribution can be used to describe the initial state in strongly-driven two-electron triatomic molecules. Namely, in many semiclassical models that describe ionization of two-electron molecules driven by intense infrared laser fields in the tunneling regime initially one electron tunnels while the other electron is bound. The microcanonical distribution presented in this work can be used to describe the initial state of this bound electron.

Observation of $B^{0} \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{(*)-}$

We report the first observation of the decays $B^0 \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{(*)-}$. The data sample of $711$ fb$^{-1}$ used in this analysis corresponds to $772$ million $B\bar{B}$ pairs, collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. We observe $19.8σ$ and $10.8σ$ excesses of events for the two decay modes and measure the branching fractions of $B^0 \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{-}$ and $B^0 \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{*-}$ to be $(25.1\pm2.6\pm3.5)\times10^{-6}$ and $(33.6\pm6.3\pm4.4)\times10^{-6}$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are not compatible with the predictions based on the generalized factorization approach. In addition, a threshold enhancement in the di-baryon ($p\barΛ$) system is observed, consistent with that observed in similar $B$ decays.

Inclusive cross sections for pairs of identified light charged hadrons and for single protons in $e^+e^-$ at $\sqrt{s}=$ 10.58 GeV

We report the first double differential cross sections of two charged pions and kaons ($e^+e^- \rightarrow hhX$) in electron-positron annihilation as a function of the fractional energies of the two hadrons for any charge and hadron combination. The dependence of these di-hadron cross sections on the topology (same, opposite-hemisphere or anywhere) is also studied with the help of the event shape variable thrust and its axis. The ratios of these di-hadron cross sections for different charges and hadron combinations directly shed light on the contributing fragmentation functions. For example, we find that the ratio of same-sign pion pairs over opposite-sign pion pairs drops toward higher fractional energies where disfavored fragmentation is expected to be suppressed. These di-hadron results are obtained from a $655\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ data sample collected near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. Extending the previously published single-pion and single-kaon cross sections, single-proton ($e^+e^- \rightarrow pX$) cross sections are extracted from a $159\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ data sub-sample.

Measurement of the branching ratio of $\bar{B} \to D^{(\ast)} τ^- \barν_τ$ relative to $\bar{B} \to D^{(\ast)} \ell^- \barν_\ell$ decays with hadronic tagging at Belle

We report a measurement of the branching fraction ratios R(D(*)) of Bbar -> D(*) tau- nubar_tau relative to Bbar -> D()* l- nubar_l (where l = e or mu) using the full Belle data sample of 772 x 10^6 BBbar pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The measured values are R(D)= 0.375 +- 0.064(stat.) +- 0.026(syst.) and R(D*) = 0.293 +- 0.038(stat.) +- 0.015(syst.). The analysis uses hadronic reconstruction of the tag-side B meson and purely leptonic tau decays. The results are consistent with earlier measurements and do not show a significant deviation from the standard model prediction.

Semi-inclusive studies of semileptonic $B_s$ decays at Belle

We present an analysis of the semi-inclusive decays $B_s \to D_s^- X \ell^+ ν$ and $B_s \to D_s^{*-} X \ell^+ ν$, where $X$ denotes a final state that may consist of additional hadrons or photons and $\ell$ is an electron or muon. The studied $B_s$ decays are contained in the $121.4~{\rm fb}^{-1}$ $Υ(5S)$ data sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The branching fractions of the decays are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(B_s \to D_s^- X \ell^+ ν) = [8.2 \pm 0.2 (\text{stat}) \pm 0.6 (\text{syst}) \pm 1.4 (\text{ext})]\%$ and $\mathcal{B}(B_s \to D_s^{*-} X \ell^+ ν) = [5.4 \pm 0.4 (\text{stat}) \pm 0.4 (\text{syst}) \pm 0.9 (\text{ext})]\%$, where the first two uncertainties are statistical and systematic and the last is due to external parameters. The measurement also provides an estimate of the $B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}$ production cross-section, $σ(e^+e^- \to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}) = (53.8 \pm 1.4 (\text{stat}) \pm 4.0 (\text{syst}) \pm 3.4 (\text{ext}))\,{\rm pb}$, at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 10.86\,{\rm GeV}$.

Observation of $X(3872)$ in $B \to X(3872) Kπ$ decays

We report the first observation of $B^0 \to X(3872) (K^{+}π^{-})$ and evidence for $B^+ \to X(3872) (K^{0}π^{+})$. We measure the product of branching fractions for the former to be ${\cal B}(B^0 \to X(3872) (K^+ π^-)) \times {\cal B}(X(3872) \to J/ψπ^+ π^-) = (7.9 \pm 1.3(\mbox{stat.})\pm 0.4(\mbox{syst.})) \times 10^{-6}$ and find that $B^{0}\to X(3872) K^{*}(892)^{0}$ does not dominate the $B^{0}\to X(3872)K^{+}π^{-}$ decay mode. We also measure ${\cal B}(B^+ \to X(3872) (K^0 π^+)) \times {\cal B}(X(3872) \to J/ψπ^+ π^-) = (10.6 \pm 3.0(\mbox{stat.}) \pm 0.9(\mbox{syst.})) \times 10^{-6}$. This study is based on the full data sample of 711~fb$^{-1}$ ($772\times 10^6 B\bar B$ pairs) collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB collider.

Measurement of the branching fraction of B^+ -> tau^+ nu_tau decays with the semileptonic tagging method

We report a measurement of the branching fraction of B^+ -> tau^+ nu_tau decays using a data sample of 772 x 10^6 BBbar pairs, collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We reconstruct the accompanying B meson in a semileptonic decay and detect the recoiling B candidate in the decay channel B^+ -> tau^+ nu_tau. We obtain a branching fraction of BR(B^+ -> tau^+ nu_tau) = [1.25 +- 0.28 (stat.) +- 0.27 (syst.)] x 10^-4. This result is in good agreement with previous measurements and the expectation from the calculation based on the Standard Model.

Measurements of $B\rightarrow \bar{D} D_{s0} ^{*+}(2317)$ decay rates and a search for isospin partners of the $D_{s0}^{*+} (2317)$

We report improved measurements of the product branching fractions ${\mathcal B}(B^+\rightarrow\bar{D}^0 D_{s0}^{*+} (2317))\times{\mathcal B}( D_{s0} ^{*+}(2317)\rightarrow D_s^{+}π^0) =(8.0^{+1.3}_{-1.2} \pm 1.1 \pm 0.4)\times 10^{-4}$ and ${\mathcal B}(B^0\rightarrow D^- D_{s0} ^{*+}(2317))\times{\mathcal B}(D_{s0}^{*+}(2317)\rightarrow D_s^{+}π^0) =(10.2^{+1.3}_{-1.2} \pm 1.0 \pm 0.4)\times 10^{-4}$, where the first errors are statistical, the second are systematic and the third are from $D$ and $D_s$ branching fractions. In addition, we report negative results from a search for hypothesized neutral ($Z^0$) and doubly charged ($Z^{++}$) isospin partners of the $D_{s0}^{*+}(2317)$ and provide upper limits on the product branching fractions ${\mathcal B}(B^0 \rightarrow D^0 z^0)\times{\mathcal B}(z^0\rightarrow D_s^{+}π^-)$ and ${\mathcal B}(B^+\rightarrow D^- z^{++})\times{\mathcal B}(z^{++}\rightarrow D_s^{+}π^+)$ that are more than an order of magnitude smaller than theoretical expectations for the hypotheses that the $D_{s0} ^{*+}(2317)$ is a member of an isospin triplet. The analysis uses a 711 fb$^{-1}$ data sample containing 772 million $B\bar{B}$ meson pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance in the Belle detector at the KEKB collider.

Study of $D^{**}$ production and light hadronic states in the $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} ωπ^-$ decay

We report on the first observations of $\bar{B}^0 \to D_1(2430)^0 ω$, $\bar{B}^0 \to D_1(2420)^0 ω$ and $\bar{B}^0 \to D^*_2(2460)^0 ω$ decays. The $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} ρ(1450)^-$ decay is also observed. The branching fraction measurements are based on $(771.6 \pm 10.6)\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The fractions of longitudinal polarization of the $D^{**}$ states as well as partial wave fractions of the $D_1(2430)^0$ are obtained. We also set a $90\%$ confidence level upper limit for the product of branching fractions of $\mathcal{B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} b_1(1235)^-) \times \mathcal{B}(b_1(1235)^- \to ωπ^-)$. The measurements show evidence of nontrivial final-state interaction phases for the $ρ$-like amplitudes.

First Observation of CP Violation in B0->D(*)CP h0 Decays by a Combined Time-Dependent Analysis of BaBar and Belle Data

We report a measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry of B0->D(*)CP h0 decays, where the light neutral hadron h0 is a pi0, eta or omega meson, and the neutral D meson is reconstructed in the CP eigenstates K+ K-, K0S pi0 or K0S omega. The measurement is performed combining the final data samples collected at the Y(4S) resonance by the BaBar and Belle experiments at the asymmetric-energy B factories PEP-II at SLAC and KEKB at KEK, respectively. The data samples contain ( 471 +/- 3 ) x 10^6 BB pairs recorded by the BaBar detector and ( 772 +/- 11 ) x 10^6, BB pairs recorded by the Belle detector. We measure the CP asymmetry parameters -eta_f S = +0.66 +/- 0.10 (stat.) +/- 0.06 (syst.) and C = -0.02 +/- 0.07 (stat.) +/- 0.03 (syst.). These results correspond to the first observation of CP violation in B0->D(*)CP h0 decays. The hypothesis of no mixing-induced CP violation is excluded in these decays at the level of 5.4 standard deviations.

Evidence for the decay B0->eta pi^0

We report a search for the charmless hadronic decay $B^0\toηπ^0$ with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 694 $\rm fb^{-1}$ containing $753\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs. The data were collected by the Belle experiment running on the $Υ(4S)$ resonance at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. We measure a branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(B^0\toηπ^0)=(4.1^{+1.7+0.5}_{-1.5-0.7})\times 10^{-7}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Our measurement gives an upper limit of $\mathcal{B}(B^0\toηπ^0)<6.5\times 10^{-7}$ at 90\% confidence level. The signal has a significance of $3.0$ standard deviations and constitutes the first evidence for this decay mode.

Measurement of $e^+e^- \to γχ_{cJ}$ via initial state radiation at Belle

The process $e^+e^- \to γχ_{cJ}$ ($J$=1, 2) is studied via initial state radiation using 980 fb$^{-1}$ of data at and around the $Υ(nS)$ ($n$=1, 2, 3, 4, 5) resonances collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. No significant signal is observed except from $ψ(2S)$ decays. Upper limits on the cross sections between $\sqrt{s}=3.80$ and $5.56~{\rm GeV}$ are determined at the 90% credibility level, which range from few pb to a few tens of pb. We also set upper limits on the decay rate of the vector charmonium [$ψ(4040$), $ψ(4160)$, and $ψ(4415)$] and charmoniumlike [$Y(4260)$, $Y(4360)$, and $Y(4660)$] states to $γχ_{cJ}$.

On the Angular Resolution of the AGILE gamma-ray imaging detector

We present a study of the Angular Resolution of the AGILE gamma-ray imaging detector (GRID) that is operational in space since April 2007. The AGILE instrument is made of an array of 12 planes each equipped with a Tungsten converter and Silicon micros trip detectors and is sensitive in the energy range 50 MeV - 10 GeV. Among the space instruments devoted to gamma-ray astrophysics, AGILE uniquely exploits an analog readout system with dedicated electronics coupled with Silicon detectors. We show the results of Monte Carlo simulations carried out to reproduce the gamma-ray detection by the GRID, and we compare them to in-flight data. We use the Crab (pulsar + Nebula) system for discussion of real data performance, since its E^{-2} energy spectrum is representative of the majority of gamma-ray sources. For Crab-like spectrum sources, the GRID angular resolution (FWHM of ~4deg at 100 MeV; ~0.8deg at 1 GeV; ~0.9deg integrating the full energy band from 100 MeV to tens of GeV) is stable across a large field of view, being characterized by a flat response up to 30deg off-axis. A comparison of the angular resolution obtained by the two operational gamma-ray instruments, AGILE-GRID and Fermi-LAT, is interesting in view of future gamma-ray missions, that are currently under study. The two instruments exploit different detector configurations affecting the angular resolution: the former being optimized in the readout and track reconstruction especially in the low-energy band, the latter in terms of converter thickness and power consumption. We show that, despite these differences, the angular resolution of both instruments is very similar between 100 MeV and a few GeV.

First observation of the hadronic transition $ Υ(4S) \to ηh_{b}(1P)$ and new measurement of the $h_b(1P)$ and $η_b(1S)$ parameters

Using the transition $h_b(1P) \to γη_b(1S)$, we measure the $η_b(1S)$ mass $M_{η_{b}(1S)} = (9400.7 \pm 1.7 \pm 1.6)$ MeV/$c^{2}$, corresponding to $ΔM_{\mathrm HF}(1S) = (59.6 \pm 1.7 \pm 1.6)$ MeV/$c^{2}$, the $η_b(1S)$ width $Γ_{η_{b}(1S)} = (8 ^{+6}_{-5} \pm 5)$ MeV/$c^{2}$ and the branching fraction ${\cal B}[h_b(1P) \to γη_b(1S)]= (56 \pm 8 \pm 4) \%$.

Measurement of the direct $CP$ asymmetry in $\bar{B}\rightarrow X_{s+d}γ$ decays with a lepton tag

We report the measurement of the direct $CP$ asymmetry in the radiative $\bar{B}\rightarrow X_{s+d}γ$ decay using a data sample of $(772 \pm 11)\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The $CP$ asymmetry is measured as a function of the photon energy threshold. For $E^{\rm{*}}_γ \geq 2.1~{\rm{GeV}}$, where $E^{\rm{*}}_γ$ is the photon energy in the center-of-mass frame, we obtain $\mathcal{A}_{CP}(\bar{B}\rightarrow X_{s+d}γ)= (2.2 \pm 3.9 \pm 0.9) \%$, consistent with the Standard Model prediction.
