Boundary layer of elastic turbulence

We investigate theoretically the near-wall region in elastic turbulence of a dilute polymer solution in the limit of large Weissenberg number. As it was established experimentally, elastic turbulence possesses a boundary layer where the fluid velocity field can be approximated by a steady shear flow with relatively small fluctuations on the top of it. Assuming that at the bottom of the boundary layer the dissolved polymers can be considered as passive objects, we examine analytically and numerically statistics of the polymer conformation, which is highly nonuniform in the wall-normal direction. Next, imposing the condition that the passive regime terminates at the border of the boundary layer, we obtain an estimate for the ratio of the mean flow to the magnitude of flow fluctuations. This ratio is determined by the polymer concentration, the radius of gyration of polymers and their length in the fully extended state. The results of our asymptotic analysis reproduce the qualitative features of elastic turbulence at finite Weissenberg numbers.

Inelastic collapse and near-wall localization of randomly accelerated particles

The inelastic collapse of stochastic trajectories of a randomly accelerated particle moving in half-space $z > 0$ has been discovered by McKean and then independently re-discovered by Cornell et. al. The essence of this phenomenon is that particle arrives to a wall at $z = 0$ with zero velocity after an infinite number of inelastic collisions if the restitution coefficient $β$ of particle velocity is smaller than the critical value $β_c=\exp(-π/\sqrt{3})$. We demonstrate that inelastic collapse takes place also in a wide class of models with spatially inhomogeneous random force and, what is more, that the critical value $β_c$ is universal. That class includes an important case of inertial particles in wall-bounded random flows. To establish how the inelastic collapse influence the particle distribution, we construct an exact equilibrium probability density function $ρ(z,v)$ for particle position and velocity. The equilibrium distribution exists only at $β<β_c$ and indicates that inelastic collapse does not necessarily mean the near-wall localization.

Passive scalar transport in peripheral regions of random flows

We investigate statistical properties of the passive scalar near boundaries (walls) in random (turbulent) flows assuming weakness of its diffusion. Then at advanced stages of the passive scalar mixing its unmixed residue is concentrated in a narrow diffusive layer near the wall and its transport to bulk goes through the peripheral region (laminar sublayer). We conducted Lagrangian numerical simulations of the process for different space dimensions $d$ and revealed structures responsible for the transport that are passive scalar tongues pulled from the diffusive boundary layer to bulk. We investigated statistical properties of the passive scalar and of the passive scalar integrated along the wall. Moments of both objects demonstrate scaling behavior outside the diffusive boundary layer. We propose an analytical scheme for explanation scaling of the passive scalar, the obtained exponents agree reasonably with numerics in 3d.
